ABSTRACT

From a critical perspective that considers the social involvement of emotions and ways of subjectivation, this article aims to explore the experiences of women who had endured physical violence in an intimate relationship. Specifically, the focus is on how the feelings, effects and emotions were configured and manifested in the process of entering, maintaining, and leaving a violent heterosexual relationship. A multiple case study was carried out through interviews with five women. The material was transcribed and initially analyzed by two researchers separately. Next, the cases were debated seeking their singularities and similarities, considering an analysis through gender dispositifs. In the discussion developed in this article, observations on the following topics were addressed: 1) Narcissistic satisfaction of being chosen and special; 2) Forms of violence; 3) Mobilized Effects; 4) "The love of my life": the idealization of romantic love; and 5) The decentering of romantic love and the entry of the "third party": possible ways out.

ABSTRACT

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common salivary gland adenocarcinoma, more frequently affecting female patients in the fifth decade of life. When MEC arises in the minor salivary glands, the palate is the primary site. This case report describes an MEC on the palate of a 30-year-old woman. The lesion was initially treated as a pyogenic granuloma, but the final diagnosis based on histopathology was low-grade MEC. The patient was referred for cancer treatment, and no recurrence was observed during 3 years of follow-up. Some malignant tumors can mimic nonneoplastic reactive lesions clinically, which highlights the importance of biopsy and proper microscopic analysis of the resulting specimens.

ABSTRACT

This work aimed to evaluate the performance of co-cultivation of potential probiotic yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in producing plant-based fermented beverages. The co-culture comprised LAB Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CCMA0743 with the yeasts Pichia kluyveri CCMA 0615, Pichia guilliermondii CCMA 1753 and Debaryomyces hansenii CCMA 1761 separately. The plant substrate was 75 g oat, 175 g sunflower seeds, and 75 g almonds. The viability of microorganisms in the plant-based matrix was evaluated during fermentation, storage at 4 °C, and under simulated gastrointestinal tract (GIT) conditions. Chemical analysis, antioxidant activity, and sensory profile of the beverages were also determined. The three yeasts and the LAB showed counts greater than 6.0 log CFU/mL after fermentation, and the plant-based matrix protected the yeasts during simulated digestion. P. kluyveri and D. hansenii showed higher survival than P. guilliermondii and L. plantarum after exposure to simulated GIT conditions. The pH of the plant-based matrix reduced from approximately 7 to 3.8. Lactic acid was the main organic acid produced during fermentation. In addition, 113 volatile compounds were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), including alcohols, aldehydes, alkanes, alkenes, acids, ester, ether, ketones, phenol, and amides. The beverage sensory profile varied with the co-culture. The co-culture D. hansenii and L. plantarum showed higher antioxidant activity than the other co-culture tested, and the homogeneous texture attribute characterized the beverage produced with this combination. Results show the suitability of tested co-cultures to produce a plant-based fermented beverage and indicate more significant potential for D. hansenii and L. plantarum co-culture as a starter for its functionalization.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma is common in patients with cirrhosis regardless of the etiology. Its presentation is uncommon in patients without known cirrhosis. It can spread commonly to the lungs, abdominal lymph nodes and bone but cardiac metastases are rare. The screening and early diagnosis impact the treatment feasibility and prognosis. The most common etiologies of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma are alcohol consumption and viral hepatitis B and C, however, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming a more pronounced known risk factor for steatosis, advanced liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and thus hepatocellular carcinoma due to the rise of metabolic syndrome prevalence. Although a known risk factor, there are no current recommendations for cancer surveillance in patients with NAFLD. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness of this rising complication by describing a rare initial presentation of hepatocellular carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The viral infection caused by HSV-1 leads to manifestation of herpes simplex lesions and is characterized by periods of primary infection, latency and recurrence. During the individual's life, this infection can be reactivated by several factors such as stress. In the COVID-19 pandemic context, an increase in negative psychological effects derived from emotional exhaustion among university students is observed. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between stress and recurrence of oral herpes simplex lesions during the COVID-19 pandemic in undergraduate dentistry students. Materials and Methods: This observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study, with a quali-quantitative approach, was carried out with a population consisting of 347 dentistry students, over 18 years old, regardless of gender and skin color, who had already had primary episodes and/or recurrent oral herpes simplex before the COVID-19 pandemic. Students enrolled in Dentistry who refused to agree to the free and informed consent form (ICF) were excluded. Results: Most participants were female (81%), aged between 20 and 23 years. Only 8% had recurrence of herpes simplex lesions during the pandemic period. Among them, 78% presented 1 time, 11% indicated 4 times and 11% revealed 5 times. The level of stress, anxiety and depression of the participants was analyzed using the DASS-21 scale and it was observed that among the collaborators who presented recurrence of oral herpes simplex, 44% had severe anxiety. Besides, 44% of participants expressed a severe level and another 44% moderate level of stress. Conclusion: The study showed the negative impact that the period of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused in dentistry students. It was noted that the portion of thepopulation that presented the recurrence of the manifestations of the virus in the vast majority indicated severe level anxiety and stress at moderate and severe levels

ABSTRACT

Attention is the selection of information to improve central nervous system functioning. In this study, reaction times (RT) of 6 volleyball players and 6 non sports practitioners were compared during voluntary and automatic orienting of attention tasks. In Experiment I (voluntary) a central fixation point (FP) appeared and after 700 ms a central cue (valid, invalid or neutral) indicating to the left or to the right. After 300, 500 or 800 ms the target flashed. In Experiment II (automatic), after 700 ms a peripheral cue appeared and after 100 or 800 ms the target appeared on the same or the opposite cue position. Subjects responded by pressing a joystick key. Median RT for each condition were used in Anova. The analysis of Experiment I demonstrated that volleyball players were faster than non sports practitioners (p < 0.05), differently of Experiment II (p = 0.36). These results indicate that volleyball players had better performance on voluntary attentional tasks.

ABSTRACT

Seasonal variations in spermatozoa numbers and in sperm motility along the vas deferens in Crotalus durissus terrificus from southeastern Brazil were analyzed. Our data demonstrate storage and motility of the spermatozoa along the vas deferens throughout the year. This is characteristic of a postnuptial reproductive cycle, usually found in snakes living in temperate climates. We describe similarities in reproductive cycle patterns found in the tropical nonhibernator C. durissus terrificus and in hibernator snakes from temperate zones. Our results show that in C. durissus terrificus, a significant difference in spermatozoa counts occurs between winter and summer. Higher numbers of spermatozoa in summer and autumn, due to intense spermiogenesis, coincides with the mating season in autumn. These data indicate that after spermiogenesis in summer, the males combine the peak of sperm storage to the period females are attractive. Mating, however, is not linked to ovulation, and the sperm is stored in the females during winter until fertilization occurs in spring. In the males, after mating, spermatozoon counts low. In spring, they gradually increase, turning again the highest in summer and autumn. During spermiogenesis in the convoluted vas deferens, spermatozoa gain motility, enhancing their performance along their way towards the distal portion.
