ABSTRACT
The genus Nealiolus Mason, 1974 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae, Brachistinae) is recorded for the first time in the Atlantic forest remnants and traditional cocoa agroforests, Theobroma cacao (Malvaceae) in the northeastern Brazilian region. A new species Nealiolus seb Silva, Shimbori & Fernandes sp. n. is described and named in honor of the "Sociedade Entomológica do Brasil - SEB", on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary (golden jubilee). Digital images, map and an identification key for all Brazilian species of Nealiolus are provided.

Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) is a mosquitoborne virus that reemerged in December 2023 in Argentina and Uruguay, causing a major outbreak. We investigated the outbreak using epidemiologic, entomological, and genomic analyses, focusing on WEEV circulation near the ArgentinaâUruguay border in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. During November 2023âApril 2024, the outbreak in Argentina and Uruguay resulted in 217 human cases, 12 of which were fatal, and 2,548 equine cases. We determined cases on the basis of laboratory and clinical epidemiologic criteria. We characterized 3 fatal equine cases caused by a novel WEEV lineage identified through a nearly complete coding sequence analysis, which we propose as lineage C. Our findings highlight the importance of continued surveillance and equine vaccination to control future WEEV outbreaks in South America.

Antimicrobial resistance is a natural mechanism in microorganisms, making the treatment of infections more complex in human and veterinary medicine. Global exotic and ornamental bird markets have significantly increased, and the close relationship between pets and humans makes exploring the potential role of these birds as vectors for the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria imperative. This study aimed to use culture-dependent methods to investigate cloacal bacteria and the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in four breeding stocks of ornamental birds. Cloacal swab samples were collected from 53 birds (canaries = 32, cockatiels = 17, and budgies = 4) and used for culturing and isolating facultative anaerobic and/or obligatory aerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antimicrobial susceptibility profile of each isolate was determined by the disk diffusion method. Thirty-four isolates were obtained, most of which belonged to the Staphylococcus genus. Bacterial richness was higher in canaries and in one of the breeding stockings, where Gram-negative bacteria were more abundant than in the others. In addition, canaries exhibited a predominance of resistant isolates, particularly multidrug-resistant strains, probably due to prophylactic antimicrobial usage. Most Gram-negative bacteria were resistant to at least one drug tested. A vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis strain was isolated. Most Staphylococcus strains were resistant to gentamycin, followed by penicillin. Eight strains were cefoxitin-resistant, including oxacillin-resistant S. epidermidis, in which the mecA gene was detected. Understanding the prevalence of resistance in avian species is crucial in the collaborative pursuit of maintaining antibiotic effectiveness and strengthening public health defense against emerging infectious risks.
A resistência antimicrobiana é um mecanismo natural dos microrganismos, complicando o tratamento de infecções na medicina humana e veterinária. O mercado global de aves exóticas e ornamentais cresceu significativamente, e a relação próxima entre esses animais e humanos destaca a necessidade de investigar o papel das aves na disseminação de bactérias resistentes. Este estudo utilizou métodos dependentes de cultura para examinar bactérias cloacais e a presença de resistência a antibióticos em quatro plantéis de aves ornamentais. Amostras de suabe cloacal foram coletadas de 53 aves (canários = 32, calopsitas = 17, periquitos = 4) e usadas para cultivar e isolar bactérias Gram-positivas e Gram-negativas, facultativas anaeróbias e aeróbias obrigatórias. A suscetibilidade antimicrobiana foi determinada pelo método de difusão em disco. Foram obtidos 34 isolados, principalmente do gênero Staphylococcus. A riqueza bacteriana foi maior nos canários e em um dos plantéis, onde houve aumento de Gram-negativos. Canários mostraram predominância de isolados resistentes, especialmente cepas multirresistentes, provavelmente devido ao uso profilático de antimicrobianos. A maioria das bactérias Gram-negativas foi resistente a pelo menos um fármaco testado. Um Enterococcus faecalis resistente à vancomicina foi isolado. A maioria dos Staphylococcus foi resistente à gentamicina e penicilina; oito cepas foram resistentes à cefoxitina, incluindo S. epidermidis resistente à oxacilina com o gene mecA detectado. Compreender a prevalência de resistência em aves é crucial para manter a eficácia dos antibióticos e fortalecer a saúde pública contra riscos infecciosos emergentes.

BACKGROUND: Treatment for edema involves multiple approaches, with Kinesiotaping having recently emerged as an option for edema reduction. OBJECTIVE: To systematically summarize current evidence on the effects of Kinesiotaping on edema reduction on any type of edema. METHODS: A systematic review was performed including randomized clinical trials that compared the effects of Kinesiotaping to any other intervention or no intervention on edema. Screening, assessment of methodological quality (PEDro scale) of studies, and confidence of evidence (GRADE) were analyzed by two independent reviewers. A quantitative summary is presented through meta-analyses. RESULTS: A total of 3750 studies were identified, of which 70 were included in this review, and were organized by body region (face, upper limbs and lower limbs) and by treatment time (short and long term). It was observed that Kinesiotaping was superior to comparison groups in the short-term for face edema (Standardized mean difference [SMD] -1.07; 95%CI -1.48 to -0.65) and lower limbs (SMD -0.55; 95%CI -1.06 to -0.05). Also, Kinesiotaping was superior to comparison group in the long-term for lower limbs (SMD -0.72; 95%CI -1.25 to -0.18). Kinesiotaping was not superior to the comparison groups for upper limbs in both the short (SMD -0.05; 95%CI -0.89 to 0.80) and long-term (SMD -0.04; 95%CI -0.31 to 0.24) protocols. CONCLUSION: Kinesiotaping seems to be an effective intervention to reduce acute edema around the face and potentially in the lower limbs in both short and long-term protocols, although the quality of evidence is very low. However, these positive results were not observed for the upper limbs.
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to analyze the effect of a flow training program based on mindfulness applied to young and adult elite handball athletes. A quantitative, quasi-experimental, descriptive data analysis approach was carried out. The sample included 105 athletes (51 female and 54 male). The athletes were divided into two groups: (i) experimental (n = 53) and (ii) control (n = 52). The results of the repeated ANOVA indicated that the experimental group achieved significant improvements compared to the control group in decision making (n2p = 0.086), mental well-being (n2p = 0.045), dispositional flow state (n2p = 0.103), non-judgment (n2p = 0.040), refocusing (n2p = 0.052), and mindful traits in daily life (n2p = 0.058). A Pearson analysis demonstrated a positive correlation between dispositional flow state and mindfulness in sport and mental well-being. The correlation analysis also showed an inverse correlation between decision making and sense of control and mindful traits in daily life. The findings revealed that the program can be effective in decision making, mental well-being, dispositional flow state, mindfulness in sport, and mindful traits in daily lives of athletes.

The aim of this study is to validate a minimally invasive surgical procedure to harvest palate periosteum as a source of tissue for mesenchymal stromal/stem cells. We performed a standardized procedure to harvest the palate periosteum in ten subjects, which consisted of a 3 mm disposable punch and a Molt periosteal elevator to harvest a small full-thickness fragment of soft tissue at the hard palate area, between the upper bicuspids, 3 to 4 mm apical to the cement enamel junction. The one-third inner portion was fragmented, and following standard cell culture procedures, the adherent cells were cultured for three passages, after obtaining 70-90% confluence. Cell morphology analysis, flow cytometry analysis, and viability and osteogenic differentiation assays were performed. In all 10 cases, uneventful healing was observed, with no need for analgesic intake. The evaluation of cell morphology showed elongated spindle-shaped cells distributed in woven patterns. A high viability range was verified as well as an immunophenotype compatible with mesenchymal stem cell lineage. The differentiation assay showed the potential of the cells to differentiate into the osteogenic lineage. These results demonstrate that the minimally invasive proposed surgical technique is capable of supplying enough periosteum source tissue for stem cell culture and bone tissue engineering.

During the ongoing western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) outbreak in South America, we described three fatal cases in horses from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We sequenced WEEV strains and identified a novel lineage causing these cases. Continued surveillance and horse immunization are needed to mitigate the WEEV burden.

OBJECTIVE: To assess clinical-causal validity evidence of the nursing diagnosis, risk for unstable blood glucose level (00179), in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in 5 primary healthcare units, involving 107 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 60 in the case group and 47 in the control group. Causality was determined by the association between sociodemographic and clinical factors, risk factors related to the nursing diagnosis, and the occurrence of unstable blood glucose level. An association was considered when the risk factor had a p-value of <0.05 and odds ratio >1. RESULTS: Risk factors, such as stress, inadequate physical activity, and low adherence to therapeutic regimen, were prevalent in the sample. Time since diagnosis between 1-5 and 6-10 years, multiracial ethnicity, and the risk factor of low adherence to therapeutic regimen increased the likelihood of the outcome. Completion of high school education was identified as a protective factor. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical validation of the nursing diagnosis, risk for unstable blood glucose level, has been successfully established, revealing a clear association between sociodemographic and clinical factors and the risk factors inherent to the nursing diagnosis. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The results contribute to advancing scientific knowledge related to nursing education, research, and practice and provide support for the evolution of nursing care processes for individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
OBJETIVO: Avaliar a evidência de validade clínicocausal do diagnóstico de enfermagem, risco para nível instável de glicose no sangue (00179), em indivíduos com diabetes mellitus tipo 2. MÉTODO: Foi realizado um estudo casocontrole em cinco unidades básicas de saúde, envolvendo 107 indivíduos com diabetes mellitus tipo 2, 60 no grupo caso e 47 no grupo controle. A causalidade foi determinada pela associação entre fatores sociodemográficos e clínicos, fatores de risco relacionados ao diagnóstico de enfermagem e a ocorrência de nível instável de glicose no sangue. Uma associação foi considerada quando o fator de risco tinha um valor de p < 0.05 e odds ratio > 1. RESULTADOS: Fatores de risco como estresse, atividade física inadequada e baixa adesão ao regime terapêutico foram predominantes na amostra. O tempo desde o diagnóstico entre 1 e 5 anos e 6 a 10 anos, a etnia parda e o fator de risco baixa adesão ao regime terapêutico aumentaram a probabilidade do resultado. A conclusão do ensino médio foi identificada como um fator de proteção. CONCLUSÕES: A validação clínica do diagnóstico de enfermagem, risco para nível instável de glicose no sangue, foi estabelecida com sucesso, revelando uma clara associação entre fatores sociodemográficos e clínicos e os fatores de risco inerentes ao diagnóstico de enfermagem. IMPLICAÇÕES PARA A PRÁTICA DE ENFERMAGEM: Os resultados contribuem para o avanço do conhecimento científico relacionado à educação, à pesquisa e à prática de enfermagem e fornecem suporte para a evolução dos processos de cuidados de enfermagem para indivíduos com diabetes.

People with mental illness tend to present low levels of physical activity and high levels of sedentary behavior. The study aims to compare these levels in mental illness patients, exploring the role of socioeconomic development and treatment setting. This cross-sectional study used accelerometers and the Simple Physical Activity Questionnaire (SIMPAQ) to assess physical activity and sedentary behavior in mental illness individuals living in 23 countries. Two-way ANOVAs were used to evaluate the interaction between socioeconomic development and the treatment settings on physical activity and sedentary behavior. A total of 884 (men = 55.3%) participants, mean age of 39.3 (SD = 12.8), were evaluated. A significant interaction between socioeconomic development and treatment settings was found in sedentary behavior (F = 5.525; p = 0.019; η2p = 0.009; small effect size). Main effects were observed on socioeconomic development (F = 43.004; p < 0.001; η2p = 0.066; medium effect size) and treatment setting (F = 23.001; p < 0.001; η2p = 0.036; small effect size) for sedentary behavior and physical activity: socioeconomic development (F = 20.888; p < 0.001; η2p = 0.033; small effect size) and treatment setting (F = 30.358; p < 0.001; η2p = 0.047; small effect size), showing that HIC patients were more active, while MIC patients were more sedentary. Moreover, despite of inpatients had presented higher levels of physical activity than outpatients, they also spent more time sitting. Socioeconomic development plays an important role in sedentary behavior in patients with mental disorders, warning the need to develop new strategies to reduce these levels in this population.

Immune response to biomaterials, which is intimately related to their surface properties, can produce chronic inflammation and fibrosis, leading to implant failure. This study investigated the development of magnetic nanoparticles coated with silica and incorporating the anti-inflammatory drug naproxen, aimed at multifunctional biomedical applications. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using various techniques that confirmed the presence of magnetite and the formation of a silica-rich bioactive glass (BG) layer. In vitro studies demonstrated that the nanoparticles exhibited bioactive properties, forming an apatite surface layer when immersed in simulated body fluid, and biocompatibility with bone cells, with good viability and alkaline phosphatase activity. Naproxen, either free or encapsulated, reduced nitric oxide production, an inflammatory marker, while the BG coating alone did not show anti-inflammatory effects in this study. Overall, the magnetic nanoparticles coated with BG and naproxen showed promise for biomedical applications, especially anti-inflammatory activity in macrophages and in the bone field, due to their biocompatibility, bioactivity, and osteogenic potential.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate assessment of burn depth and burn wound healing potential is essential to determine early treatments. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-invasive and objective tool to do this. This systematic review evaluated the accuracy of IRT to determine burn wound healing potential. METHOD: This systematic review and meta-analysis used MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PEDro, DiTA and CENTRAL databases. IRT data were extracted from primary studies and categorised into four cells (i.e., true positives, false positives, true negatives and false negatives). Subgroup analysis was performed according to methods used to capture thermal images. RESULTS: The search strategy identified 2727 publications; however, 15 articles were selected for review and 11 for meta-analysis. In our meta-analysis, the accuracy of IRT was 84.8% (63% sensitivity and 81.9% specificity). CONCLUSION: IRT is a moderately accurate tool to identify burn depth and healing potential. Thus, IRT should be used carefully for evaluating burn wounds.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the thermographic pattern of regions of interest (ROI) of respiratory muscles in young asthmatics with and without bronchospasm induced by eucapnic voluntary hyperpnea (EVH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study carried out with 55 young (55% male and 45% females) aged 12.5 ± 3.3 years, divided in nine nonasthmatics, 22 asthmatics without exercise-induced bronchospasm compatible response (EIB-cr) and 24 asthmatics with EIB-cr. The diagnosis of EIB was given to subjects with a fall in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) ≥ 10% compared to baseline. Thermographic recordings of respiratory muscles were delimited in ROI of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), pectoral, and rectus abdominis intention area. Thermal captures and FEV1 were taken before and 5, 10, 15 and 30 min after EVH. RESULTS: Twenty-four (52.1%) of asthmatics had EIB-cr. There was a decrease in temperature at 10 min after EVH test in the SCM, pectoral and rectus abdominis ROIs in all groups (both with p < 0.05). There was a decrease in temperature (% basal) in asthmatic with EIB-cr compared to nonasthmatics in the rectus abdominis area (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There was a decrease in temperature in the ROIs of different muscle groups, especially in asthmatics. The greater drop in FEV1 observed in individuals with EIB-cr was initially associated with a decrease in skin temperature, with a difference between the nonasthmatics in the abdominal muscle area. It is likely that this decrease in temperature occurred due to a temporary displacement of blood flow to the most used muscle groups, with a decrease in the region of the skin evaluated in the thermography.

Caviomorph rodents are an exceptional model for studying the effects of ecological factors and size relations on brain evolution. These mammals are not only speciose and ecologically diverse but also present wide body size disparity, especially when considering their fossil relatives. Here, we described the brain anatomy of the largest known rodent, Josephoartigasia monesi, uncovering distinctive features within this species regarding other taxa. Albeit resembling extant pacarana Dinomys branickii, J. monesi stands out due to its longer olfactory tract and well-developed sagittal sinus. Challenging the previous hypothesis that giant rodents possessed comparatively smaller brains, we found that J. monesi and another giant extinct rodent, Neoepiblema acreensis, are within the encephalization range of extant caviomorphs. This was unraveled while developing the a Phylogenetic Encephalization Quotient (PEQ) for Caviomorpha. With PEQ, we were able to trace brain-size predictions more accurately, accounting for species-shared ancestry while adding the extinct taxa phenotypic diversity into the prediction model. According to our results, caviomorphs encephalization patterns are not the product of ecological adaptations, and brain allometry is highly conservative within the clade. We challenge future studies to investigate caviomorphs encephalization within different taxonomic ranks while increasing the sampled taxa diversity, especially of extinct forms, in order to fully comprehend the magnitude of this evolutionary stasis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the microbial contamination of three different brands of esthetic elastomeric ligatures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Different brands of esthetic ligatures (Unistick Pearl [American Orthodontics, Sheboygan, WI, USA], Power Sticks Pearl [Ortho Technology, Tampa, FL, USA], and Ease [Obscure, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA]) were randomly assigned to permanent canines of 25 patients (aged 11-18 years) undergoing corrective orthodontic treatment. After 30 days, the ligatures were removed, processed, and the biofilm composition was analyzed by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization for 40 bacterial species. The microbiological data were analyzed using a nonparametric mixed model. RESULTS: The ligatures presented intense microbial contamination after 30 days, but no statistically significant differences were observed among the three groups (pâ¯> 0.05). The levels of the evaluated individual species and proportions of the microbial complexes showed no statistically significant differences among the ligature groups (pâ¯> 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Esthetic elastomeric ligatures became multicolonized by several bacterial species after 30 days of exposure to the oral cavity. However, no relevant differences were observed among the biofilm composition formed on the different ligature brands.

Brazil has experienced one of the highest COVID-19 fatality rates globally. While numerous studies have explored the potential connection between air pollution, specifically fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and the exacerbation of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the majority of this research has been conducted in foreign regions-Europe, the United States, and China-correlating generalized pollution levels with health-related scopes. In this study, our objective is to investigate the localized connection between exposure to air pollution exposure and its health implications within a specific Brazilian municipality, focusing on COVID-19 susceptibility. Our investigation involves assessing pollution levels through spatial interpolation of in situ PM2.5 measurements. A network of affordable sensors collected data across 9 regions in Curitiba, as well as its metropolitan counterpart, Araucaria. Our findings distinctly reveal a significant positive correlation (with r-values reaching up to 0.36, p-value < 0.01) between regions characterized by higher levels of pollution, particularly during the winter months (with r-values peaking at 0.40, p-value < 0.05), with both COVID-19 mortality and incidence rates. This correlation gains added significance due to the intricate interplay between urban atmospheric pollution and regional human development indices. Notably, heightened pollution aligns with industrial hubs and intensified vehicular activity. The spatial analysis performed in this study assumes a pivotal role by identifying priority regions that require targeted action post-COVID. By comprehending the localized dynamics between air pollution and its health repercussions, tailored strategies can be implemented to alleviate these effects and ensure the well-being of the public.

Understanding the origins of the vertebrate brain is fundamental for uncovering evolutionary patterns in neuroanatomy. Regarding extinct species, the anatomy of the brain and other soft tissues housed in endocranial spaces can be approximated by casts of these cavities (endocasts). The neuroanatomical knowledge of Rhynchocephalia, a reptilian clade exceptionally diverse in the early Mesozoic, is restricted to the brain of its only living relative, Sphenodon punctatus, and unknown for fossil species. Here, we describe the endocast and the reptilian encephalization quotient (REQ) of the Triassic rhynchocephalian Clevosaurus brasiliensis and compare it with an ontogenetic series of S. punctatus. To better understand the informative potential of endocasts in Rhynchocephalia, we also examine the brain-endocast relationship in S. punctatus. We found that the brain occupies 30% of its cavity, but the latter recovers the general shape and length of the brain. The REQ of C. brasiliensis (0.27) is much lower than S. punctatus (0.84-1.16), with the tuatara being close to the mean for non-avian reptiles. The endocast of S. punctatus is dorsoventrally flexed and becomes more elongated throughout ontogeny. The endocast of C. brasiliensis is mostly unflexed and tubular, possibly representing a more plesiomorphic anatomy in relation to S. punctatus. Given the small size of C. brasiliensis, the main differences may result from allometric and heterochronic phenomena, consistent with suggestions that S. punctatus shows peramorphic anatomy compared to Mesozoic rhynchocephalians. Our results highlight a previously undocumented anatomical diversity among rhynchocephalians and provide a framework for future neuroanatomical comparisons among lepidosaurs.

Objetivo: identificar os cuidados de enfermagem direcionados a usuários diagnosticados com a doença de Crohn. Método: trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, realizada na Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, Base de Dados em Enfermagem, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online, Scientific Electronic Library Online e Google Acadêmico. A amostra foi composta por sete estudos. Resultados: a análise dos estudos revela uma série de resultados significativos no contexto dos cuidados de enfermagem, podendo citar.: a necessidade de planejar a assistência de enfermagem adaptada às particularidades da doença; a crescente relevância da telessaúde; monitoramento de sintomas, orientação nutricional, administração de medicamentos e apoio emocional, enfatizando a individualização desses cuidados. Considerações finais: os principais resultados do estudo destacam a importância dos cuidados de enfermagem centrados no bem-estar do usuário, controle da doença, apoio emocional e estímulo ao autocuidado.
Objective: to identify the nursing care provided to patients diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Method: this is an integrative literature review carried out in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Nursing Database, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Google Scholar. The sample consisted of seven studies. Results: the analysis of the studies reveals a series of significant results in the context of nursing care, including: the need to plan nursing care adapted to the particularities of the disease; the growing relevance of telehealth; symptom monitoring, nutritional guidance, medication administration and emotional support, emphasizing the individualization of this care. Final considerations: the main results of the study highlight the importance of nursing care centered on the user's well-being, disease control, emotional support and encouraging self-care.
Objetivos:identificar los cuidados de enfermería prestados a pacientes con diagnóstico de enfermedad de Crohn. Método: se trata de una revisión bibliográfica integradora realizada en la Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud, Base de Datos de Enfermería, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Scientific Electronic Library Online y Google Scholar. La muestra estuvo constituida por siete estudios. Resultados: el análisis de los estudios revela una serie de resultados significativos en el contexto de los cuidados de enfermería, entre ellos: la necesidad de planificar cuidados de enfermería adaptados a las particularidades de la enfermedad; la creciente relevancia de la telesalud; la monitorización de síntomas, la orientación nutricional, la administración de medicamentos y el apoyo emocional, destacando la individualización de estos cuidados. Consideraciones finales: los principales resultados del estudio destacan la importancia de los cuidados de enfermería centrados en el bienestar del usuario, el control de la enfermedad, el apoyo emocional y el fomento del autocuidado.

Bufadienolides are digitalis-like aglycones mainly found in skin secretions of toads. Among their biological properties, the mechanisms of antiproliferative action on tumor cells remain unclear for many compounds, including against leukemia cells. Herein, it was evaluated the mechanisms involved in the antiproliferative and genotoxic actions of hellebrigenin on tumor cell lines and in silico capacity to inhibit the human topoisomerase IIa enzyme. Firstly, its cytotoxic action was investigated by colorimetric assays in human tumor and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Next, biochemical and morphological studies were detailed by light microscopy (trypan blue dye exclusion), immunocytochemistry (BrdU uptake), flow cytometry and DNA/chromosomal damages (Cometa and aberrations). Finally, computational modelling was used to search for topoisomerase inhibition. Hellebrigenin reduced proliferation, BrdU incorporation, viability, and membrane integrity of HL-60 leukemia cells. Additionally, it increased G2/M arrest, internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, mitochondrial depolarization, and phosphatidylserine externalization in a concentration-dependent manner. In contrast to doxorubicin, hellebrigenin did not cause DNA strand breaks in HL-60 cell line and lymphocytes, and it interacts with ATPase domain residues of human topoisomerase IIa, generating a complex of hydrophobic and van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonds. So, hellebrigenin presented potent anti-leukemic activity at concentrations as low as 0.06 µM, a value comparable to the clinical anticancer agent doxorubicin, and caused biochemical changes suggestive of apoptosis without genotoxic/clastogenic-related action, but it probably triggers catalytic inhibition of topoisomerase II. These findings also emphasize toad steroid toxins as promising lead antineoplasic compounds with relatively low cytotoxic action on human normal cells.

Introdução: a própolis é uma composição resinosa produzida por abelhas e utilizada em suas colmeias contra microrganismos. Existem diversos tipos desse composto, sendo o de coloração vermelha o último espécime relatado na literatura. Assim, dentre suas aplicabilidades, a atividade antifúngica da própolis vermelha tem sido explorada com vistas a ampliar sua ação terapêutica. Objetivo: explorar estudos acerca da ação antifúngica da própolis vermelha, identificando suas potencialidades e desafios. Metodologia: foi realizada uma revisão integrativa nas bases de dados bibliográficos MEDLINE (via PubMed), SciELO e Google Acadêmico, complementada por uma diligência nas bases de ensaios clínicos ReBEC e Clinical Trials. Em seguida todos os estudos selecionados foram explorados para obtenção do cenário atual sobre o tema. Resultados: foram incluídos 08 estudos, sendo 01 deles um ensaio clínico. Os estudos comprovam a ação antifúngica da própolis vermelha, principalmente contra Candida spp. e Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, e evidenciam a maior potência fungicida deste composto em detrimento de outros tipos de própolis. Conclusão: a ação antifúngica da própolis vermelha mostra-se uma potencialidade em diversos estudos. Entretanto, o volume de pesquisas científicas relativas a esse tema é insuficiente e a complexidade desse composto configura-se como um desafio à sua aplicabilidade.
Introduction: propolis is a resinous composition produced by compounds and used in their hives against microorganisms. There are several types of this compound, the red one is the last specimen reported in the literature. Thus, among its applicability, the antifungal activity of red propolis has been explored as a path to expand its therapeutic action. Objective: to explore studies about the antifungal action of red propolis, identifying its potentialities and challenges. Methodology: Na integrative review was carried out in the bibliographic databases MEDLINE (via PubMed), SciELO and Google Scholar, complemented by a diligence in ReBEC and Clinical Trials databases. Then, all selected studies were explorers to obtain the current scenario on the subject. Results: 08 studies were included, which 01 of them was a clinical trial. Studies prove the antifungal action of red propolis, mainly against Candida spp. and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, and show the greater fungicidal power of this compound compared to other types of propolis. Conclusion: the antifungal action of red propolis shows potential in several studies. However, the volume of scientific research on this theme is insufficient and the complexity of this compound represents a challenge to its applicability.

Existen varios tipos de este compuesto, siendo el rojo el último ejemplar reportado en la literatura. Así, entre sus posibilidades de aplicación, se ha explorado la actividad antifúngica del propóleo rojo con vistas a ampliar su acción terapéutica. Objetivo: explorar estudios sobre la acción antifúngica del propóleo rojo, identificando sus potencialidades y desafíos. Metodología: Se realizó una revisión en las bases de datos bibliográficas MEDLINE (vía PubMed), SciELO y Google Scholar, complementada con una diligencia en las bases de datos de ensayos clínicos ReBEC y Clinical Trials. Luego se exploraron todos los estudios seleccionados para obtener el escenario actual sobre el tema. Resultados: Se incluyeron 08 estudios, 01 de los cuales fue un ensayo clínico. Los estudios demuestran la acción antifúngica del propóleo rojo, principalmente contra Candida spp. y Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, y muestran el mayor poder fungicida de este compuesto en detrimento de otros tipos de propóleos. Conclusión: la acción antifúngica del propóleo rojo muestra potencial en varios estudios. Sin embargo, el volumen de investigación científica sobre este tema es insuficiente y la complejidad de este compuesto representa un desafío para su aplicabilidad.
