ABSTRACT

The mechanical properties of anterior skull base (ASB) bones are not well understood due to their complex geometry and deep location. However, it is of particular interest for skull base surgeons to appraise the force range they can apply during procedures and know what kind of haptic feedback a simulation device should produce in order to be realistic for trainees. The aim of this study was to establish a measurement protocol to set the level of hydration state, temperature and curve analysis method for spherical depth sensing nanoindentation of ASB bones. A definitive screening design method was used to test the different possible combinations of these factors. Two samples of ASB bones from the heads of two human body donors (two specimens) were selected according to their microstructure as assessed by micro-CT (microtomography): low-porosity (16.87%, sphenoid bone) and high-porosity (79.85%, ethmoid bone). Depth measurement series of 36 nanoindentations (n = 288) were performed on specimen 1 according to the L8 Taguchi orthogonal array to study the effect of temperature (two levels: 20 or 37 °C), hydration state (dry or immerged in physiological saline sodium chloride), and loading curve analysis according to the Hertzian contact theory (fitting at the start or at the end). The mean values of reduced Young's (E*) modulus varied significantly depending on the hydration status and bone microstructure. In order to obtain the physiological properties of ASB bones, we thus propose performing immersion tests. To simplify the experimentation protocol, future experiments must include a room temperature level and a fit of the curve at the end of the load. A validation series was performed on the second specimen to assess the set of parameters. The E* in dry bone gave mean values of 994.68 MPa, versus 409.79 MPa in immerged bones (p < 0.00001). This is the first time a study has been carried out on ASB bones, defining the experimental parameters related to physiological conditions.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess the influence of applicator tip diameter on the inclusion of porosities in three different flowable resin composites. METHODS: The initial porosity of three syringes [Filtek Supreme XTE Flowable (XTE), Grandio Flow (GRF), Gradia Direct Flo (GDF)] was determined by 3D tomography. 25 samples per syringe, i.e. 75 samples in total, were prepared using five applicator tips of different diameters (n= 5). The porosity of the 75 samples was assessed by 3D tomography. RESULTS: For each of the materials, the applicator tips, irrespective of type, all generated an increase in the average porosity percentage compared to the initial porosity of the syringes. For XTE and GRF, the applicator tips, irrespective of type, all generated a decrease in the average porosity volume compared to the initial average porosity volume in their respective syringes. Conversely, for GDF the average porosity volume of the samples was increased. Furthermore, for each of the materials, varying the diameter of the applicator tips had no significant influence on the porosity percentage and volume. Using the present study conditions, the applicator tip generated a variation in the initial porosity of the materials; however, the diameter of the tip had no influence on said variation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It appears that practitioners can choose an applicator tip with a diameter that best suits the size and shape of the cavity to be filled using a syringe of flowable resin composite without this having any impact on the percentage and volume of porosities in the final filling of the cavity.

ABSTRACT

Beetle elytra are thickened forewings, they are lightweight and tough to protect the hindwings without hindering flight capacities. Dynastes hercules elytra are known for their hygrochromic properties. However, the whole structure of the elytron remains to be characterized. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and to our knowledge for the first time X-Ray tomography were undertaken on adult male Dynastes hercules to characterize their multi-scale structure. Trabeculae present a periodic arrangement over a short distance. Two inferred models describe the heights of plies in endocuticles of dorsal and ventral cuticles. We hypothesize that this study could provide inspiration for biomimetic materials.

ABSTRACT

A 62-year-old woman treated with fluvastatin experienced three separate thrombocytopenic illnesses, severe on two occasions associated with nadir platelet count of 57 000/µL and 75 000/µL. The hospital pharmacist replaced fluvastatin by pravastatin during three stays. Platelet count has increased some days after this substitution. These results suggest that fluvastatin could be involved in these thrombocytopenic episodes.
