ABSTRACT

This is the first report of parasitic granulomatous dermatitis caused by Pelodera spp. in a buffalo. The affected buffalo was about seven years old, was a female of the Murrah breed and belonged to a property located on Marajó Island in the State of Pará. During the clinical examination, the animal was in a standing position and presented several multifocal nodular and placoid masses throughout the body, mostly on the forelimbs, hindlimbs, abdomen, mammary glands, perineum, vulva and tail. These masses were also observed on the nasal mucosa, head, neck, back and chest. On macroscopic examination, the skin had several multifocal-to-coalescent sessile nodular and placoid lesions. Histopathology of the skin showed a marked reduction in the number of hair follicles. In the superficial dermis, there was significant multifocal-to-coalescent inflammatory infiltration, consisting of macrophages, epithelioid macrophages, lymphocytes, plasma cells and multinucleated giant cells. In the remaining hair follicles, there were numerous cross and longitudinal sections of small rhabditoid nematodes characterized by a thin cuticle, platymyarian musculature, an intestinal tract, a rhabditiform esophagus and lateral alae (morphologically compatible with Pelodera spp.). The diagnosis of parasitic dermatitis was confirmed by histopathological skin lesions associated with the presence of intralesional rhabditiform larvae morphologically compatible with Pelodera spp.

ABSTRACT

This is the first description of cutaneous mucormycosis in buffalo in the Brazilian Amazon biome. All buffalo showed apathy, inappetence, weight loss, reluctance to move, and prolonged sternal decubitus. Of the four affected animals, two died 15 and 30 days after the appearance of clinical signs. In the initial phase, the skin lesions were rounded areas with dry central regions, sensitive to palpation, with protruding edges and diameters ranging from 8 cm to 15 cm. These areas of necrosis were isolated or coalescing and present mainly on the limbs and sides. In an advanced stage of the disease, there was detachment of the skin from the necrotic areas with extensive wound formation, which sometimes exposed the subcutaneous tissue. The histopathology of the skin showed a multifocal inflammatory infiltrate composed of intact and degenerated eosinophils surrounded by epithelioid macrophages. At the center of these areas was a focally extensive area of epidermal ulceration characterized by intact and degenerated neutrophils, the necrosis of epithelial cells, and the accumulation of fibrin and erythrocytes. The mycological culture was positive for Rhizopus sp. The diagnosis of cutaneous dermatitis caused by Rhizopus sp. was based on clinical signs, macroscopic and histopathological findings, and the identification of the fungus by mycological and molecular techniques.

ABSTRACT

People with Parkinson's disease experience reduced sleep quality compared with their peers. Levodopa may have a direct effect on sleep macrostructure or may improve sleep by enhancing nocturnal motor performance. Therefore, it is important to understand the acute effects of withdrawing levodopa on sleep measures in Parkinson's disease. The purpose of this study was to compare the estimated objective and subjective sleep measures of people with Parkinson's disease sleeping under (ON-night) versus without (OFF-night) the effects of the last daily dopaminergic medication before going to bed. A total of 23 people with Parkinson's disease were instructed to wear an actigraphy device for 4 consecutive nights to objectively measure the sleep behaviour. Subjective sleep measure was assessed each morning using a Likert scale. Participants slept for 3 nights on ON-night and 1 night on OFF-night. They were instructed not to take their last dose of levodopa before going to bed in OFF-night. Sleeping in ON- versus OFF-night increased total sleep time (7.8%, p = 0.032) and sleep efficiency (3.7%, p = 0.019), and decreased duration and number of wakes after sleep onset (22.3%, p = 0.050; and 29.2%, p = 0.013, respectively). However, subjective sleep analysis indicated no significant differences between the two conditions. From a clinical point of view, our results suggest that sleeping on ON-night resulted in an improvement in estimated objective sleep measures compared with sleeping on OFF-night. From a methodological point of view, our findings emphasize the importance of relying on objective sleep measurements to accurately assess OFF-night sleep behaviour in people with Parkinson's disease.

ABSTRACT

Flavor esters are organic compounds widely used in the food industry to enhance the aroma and taste of products. However, most chemical processes for the production of these flavoring compounds use toxic organic solvents. Some organic solvents derived from petroleum can leave behind residual traces in food products, which may raise concerns about potential health risks and contamination. In this study, we employ Eversa Transform 2.0, a commercial lipase derived from the lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosus, to produce geranyl butyrate in aqueous media. The chemical process was optimized using the Taguchi method, and a conversion of 93% was obtained at the optimal reaction conditions of: 1:5 molar ratio (v/v), 15% biocatalyst load (w/w), at 50 °C, in 6 h. Classic (molecular dynamics) and quantum (density functional theory) simulations unveiled amino acid residues involved in the stabilization of the enzyme-substrate complex. Detailed QM/MM mechanistic studies identified the nucleophilic attack of the deacylation reaction as the rate-limiting step of the entire mechanism, which has a free energy barrier of 14.0 kcal/mol.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: In Brazil, one of the visceral leishmaniasis control measures in urban environments is the elimination of Lutzomyia longipalpis, which occurs through the application of pyrethroid insecticides with residual action in homes and outbuildings. Due to the loss of sensitivity of this vector to these insecticides, the search for more efficient insecticide compounds against L. longipalpis has been intensified. The objective of this work was to evaluate the toxicity of Trixis vauthieri essential oil on adult sandflies of the species L. longipalpis, and identify the phytochemical composition of these essential oils. METHODS: Essential oils from leaves collected from T. vauthieri at different times were obtained at concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 mg/mL. Twenty sandflies were exposed to the essential oils and the mortality was evaluated after 1, 2, 4, 16, 24, 48 and 72 h. The chemical constituents of the essential oil were also identified. RESULTS: The essential oils of T. vauthieri at a concentration of 20 mg/mL were the most toxic to sandflies, reaching a mortality rate of 98.33% and 95%, respectively, after 72 h of exposure. The analysis of chemical constituents revealed the presence of triterpenes and/or steroids, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins and coumarins. INTERPRETATION CONCLUSION: The results obtained suggest that T. vauthieri essential oil is fairly promising as an insecticidal potential against L. longipalpis. A more detailed analysis of the oil's phytochemical composition is necessary to identify active and pure compounds that can be used in vector control of visceral leishmaniasis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Our objective was to check if the ICD-10 operational criteria application changes non-operational, prototype-based diagnoses obtained in a real-life scenario. Methods: Psychiatry residents applied the diagnostic criteria of the ICD-10 as a "diagnostic test" to five outpatient patients they were already following who had a prototype-based diagnosis. Tests were used to ascertain whether changes in opinion were significant and if any of the diagnostic groups were more prone to change than others. The present paper is part of the study with UTN U1111-1260-1212. Results: Seventeen residents reviewed their last five case files, retrieving 85 diagnostic pairs of non-operational-based vs. operational-based diagnoses. The Stuart-Maxwell test did not indicate a significant opinion change (χ2 = 5.25, p = 0.39; power = 0.94) besides 30% of diagnostic changes. Despite not being statistically significant, 20.2% of all evaluations resulted in a change that would affect treatment choices. Using ICD-10 operational criteria slightly increased the number of observed diagnoses, but probably without clinical relevance. None of the non-operational diagnoses have a higher tendency to change with operational criteria application (χ2 = 11.6, p = 0.07). The female gender was associated with a higher diagnostic change tendency. Conclusion: Applying ICD-10 operational criteria as a diagnostic test does not induce a statistically significant diagnostic opinion change in residents and no diagnostic group seems more sensible to diagnostic change. Gender-related differences in diagnostic opinion changes might be evidence of sunk cost bias. Although not statistically significant, using operational criteria after diagnostic elaboration might help to deal with subjects without adequate treatment response.

ABSTRACT

Wolbachia pipientis is a maternally transmitted symbiotic bacterium that mainly colonizes arthropods, potentially affecting different aspects of the host's physiology, e.g., reproduction, immunity, and metabolism. It has been shown that Wolbachia modulates glycogen metabolism in mosquito Aedes fluviatilis (Ae. fluviatilis). Glycogen synthesis is controlled by the enzyme GSK3, which is also involved in immune responses in both vertebrate and invertebrate organisms. Here we investigated the mechanisms behind immune changes mediated by glycogen synthase kinase ß (GSK3ß) in the symbiosis between Ae. fluviatilis and W. pipientis using a GSK3ß inhibitor or RNAi-mediated gene silencing. GSK3ß inhibition or knockdown increased glycogen content and Wolbachia population, together with a reduction in Relish2 and gambicin transcripts. Furthermore, knockdown of Relish2 or Caspar revealed that the immunodeficiency pathway acts to control Wolbachia numbers in the host. In conclusion, we describe for the first time the involvement of GSK3ß in Ae. fluviatilis immune response, acting to control the Wolbachia endosymbiotic population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reliability of the Carousel simulator in medical education for obstetric examinations. Cervical dilation examination training in pregnant women exposes patients to additional uncomfortable and health-risk procedures, a gold standard, and does not objectively evaluate the medical student's competence. METHOD: We studied the reliability of training internship medical students in obstetrics. Participating students were assigned to take the examination of digital assessment of the cervical dilation on the simulator. Classes performed 12 consecutive randomly blind predetermined cervical dilation examinations using the Carousel simulator. The exact answer and the answer with certainty within ±1 cm were registered and analyzed. Incorrect or outlier answers were considered with a cutoff of ≥2 cm from the dilation. A dispersion graph for each centimeter of dilation simulation was constructed. RESULTS: Sixty-six medical obstetricians took part, performing 396 examinations. Thus, we observed 49 outliers (12.37%) in simulated assessments. According to the analysis, we did not observe outliers from dilation 1 to 4 cm; dilation 7 to 9 cm had a higher index of outlier measurements. We did not consider any dilation simulation dispersion graphic as a null correlation. A strong correlation was seen in the dilation 1 to 6 cm and the dilation 10 cm. The dilations 7, 8, and 9 cm showed a weak correlation. CONCLUSION: The Carousel simulator model is a reliable method for student learning. The simulator is an essential study tool capable of reducing the embarrassment and possible harm caused by the excessive and repetitive number of in vivo digital vaginal examinations. Novel studies are proposed to improve the simulator device and method, mainly to estimate the adequate repetitions and training needed before in vivo practice.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the longitudinal relationship between overweight and hypertension in school children. METHODS: This cohort study enrolled children 6-8 years of age who were then prospectively followed up over a 24 months period with repeat assessments performed at an interval of 11-13 months. Information on participation in physical education classes in school, sports practice outside of school, and economic status were obtained through questionnaires answered by parents/guardians. The measurement of blood pressure, weight, height, and waist circumference was performed during the serial follow-up visits in school. RESULTS: The proportion of hypertension did not change significantly over the 24 months (7.1% to 8.2%; P = 0.690). However, children with overweight and obesity throughout the period, had a 198% [HR (95% CI) 2.98 (1.40, 6.35)] higher risk of having hypertension diagnosed during follow-up when compared to eutrophic children in the same period. CONCLUSION: The development trajectory of overweight and obesity in children aged 6-8 years was associated with hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Mangroves are prone to biotic and abiotic stressors of natural and anthropogenic origin, of which oil pollution is one of the most harmful. Yet the response of mangrove species to acute and chronic oil exposure, as well as to other stressors, remains barely documented. In this study, a non-destructive, non-invasive approach based on field spectroscopy is proposed to unravel these responses. The approach relies on tracking alterations in foliar traits (pigments, sugars, phenols, and specific leaf area) from reflectance data in the 400-2400 nm spectral range. Three mangrove species hit by two of the most notorious oil spills in Brazilian history (1983 and 2019) and various biotic stressors, including grazing, parasitism, and fungal disease, were investigated through field spectroscopy and machine learning. This study reveals strong intra- and interspecific variability of mangrove's spectral and biochemical responses to oil pollution. Trees undergoing acute exposure to oil showed stronger alterations of foliar traits than the chronically exposed ones. Alterations induced by biotic stressors such as parasitism, disease, and grazing were successfully discriminated from those of oil for all species based on Linear Discriminant Analysis (Overall Accuracy ≥76.40% and Kappa ≥0.70). Leaf chlorophyll, phenol, and starch contents were identified as the most relevant traits in stressor discrimination. The study highlights that oil spills affect mangroves uniquely, both acutely and chronically, threatening their global conservation.

ABSTRACT

Meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes surrounding the central nervous system and is poorly described in water buffaloes. Five cases of meningitis in adults buffaloes of the Murrah and Mediterranean breads were studied. All buffaloes came from a farm located in the municipality of Castanhal, Pará, Brazil at different times. Clinical examination showed neurological clinical signs, such as apathy, reluctance to move, spastic paresis especially of the pelvic limbs, hypermetria, difficulty getting up, pressing of the head into obstacles and convulsion. In three buffaloes, a large part of the horn had been lost, exposing the corresponding frontal sinus, through which a bloody to purulent exudate flowed. The hemogram revealed neutrophilic leukocytosis. At necropsy, adherence of the dura mater to the periosteum and a purulent to fibrinopurulent exudate were observed in the sulci of the cerebral cortex and on the pia mater over almost the entire surface of the brain and throughout the spinal cord. The cerebrospinal fluid had a cloudy aspect with fibrin filaments. The histopathology of buffaloes confirmed the diagnosis of bacterial fibrinopurulent meningitis. Buffaloes are susceptible to bacterial inflammation of the meninges due to fractures of the base of the horn and mostly present with neurological manifestations.

ABSTRACT

Inter-organ communication is a vital process to maintain physiologic homeostasis, and its dysregulation contributes to many human diseases. Given that circulating bioactive factors are stable in serum, occur naturally, and are easily assayed from blood, they present obvious focal molecules for therapeutic intervention and biomarker development. Recently, studies have shown that secreted proteins mediating inter-tissue signaling could be identified by 'brute force' surveys of all genes within RNA-sequencing measures across tissues within a population. Expanding on this intuition, we reasoned that parallel strategies could be used to understand how individual genes mediate signaling across metabolic tissues through correlative analyses of gene variation between individuals. Thus, comparison of quantitative levels of gene expression relationships between organs in a population could aid in understanding cross-organ signaling. Here, we surveyed gene-gene correlation structure across 18 metabolic tissues in 310 human individuals and 7 tissues in 103 diverse strains of mice fed a normal chow or high-fat/high-sucrose (HFHS) diet. Variation of genes such as FGF21, ADIPOQ, GCG, and IL6 showed enrichments which recapitulate experimental observations. Further, similar analyses were applied to explore both within-tissue signaling mechanisms (liver PCSK9) and genes encoding enzymes producing metabolites (adipose PNPLA2), where inter-individual correlation structure aligned with known roles for these critical metabolic pathways. Examination of sex hormone receptor correlations in mice highlighted the difference of tissue-specific variation in relationships with metabolic traits. We refer to this resource as gene-derived correlations across tissues (GD-CAT) where all tools and data are built into a web portal enabling users to perform these analyses without a single line of code (gdcat.org). This resource enables querying of any gene in any tissue to find correlated patterns of genes, cell types, pathways, and network architectures across metabolic organs.

The objective of this meta-analysis is to compare the effects on muscle strength and hypertrophy of low and high-intensity aerobic training with BFR (LI-BFR and HI-BFR) versus low and high-intensity aerobic training without BFR (LI and HI). The search was performed in five databases, by two independent researchers, and the terms and keywords used to optimize the searches were related to blood flow restriction and aerobic training. All studies were evaluated for methodological quality using the PEDro scale and for quality of evidence using the GRADE system. Meta-analyses were conducted using RevMan software. After data extraction, 11 studies met all eligibility criteria and were included in the systematic review. The results of the overall analysis between LI-BFR vs. LI showed a significant difference in muscle strength of knee extensors; for hypertrophy, LI was superior to LI-BFR with clinical relevance. Comparing HI-BFR vs. HI there was no superiority for muscle strength. In conclusion, for strength gains very low-quality evidence was found to support no superiority between LI-BFR and HI-BFR compared to LI and HI, respectively. For muscle hypertrophy, superiority of LI was found compared to LI-BFR, with a very low level of evidence.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the effects of a 4-week live high train low (LHTL; FiO2 ~ 13.5%), intervention, followed by a tapering phase, on muscle glycogen concentration. Fourteen physically active males (28 ± 6 years, 81.6 ± 15.4 kg, 179 ± 5.2 cm) were divided into a control group (CON; n = 5), and the group that performed the LHTL, which was exposed to hypoxia (LHTL; n = 9). The subjects trained using a one-legged knee extension exercise, which enabled four experimental conditions: leg training in hypoxia (TLHYP); leg control in hypoxia (CLHYP, n = 9); leg trained in normoxia (TLNOR, n = 5), and leg control in normoxia (CLNOR, n = 5). All participants performed 18 training sessions lasting between 20 and 45 min [80-200% of intensity corresponding to the time to exhaustion (TTE) reached in the graded exercise test]. Additionally, participants spent approximately 10 h day-1 in either a normobaric hypoxic environment (14.5% FiO2; ~ 3000 m) or a control condition (i.e., staying in similar tents on ~ 530 m). Thereafter, participants underwent a taper protocol consisting of six additional training sessions with a reduced training load. SpO2 was lower, and the hypoxic dose was higher in LHTL compared to CON (p < 0.001). After 4 weeks, glycogen had increased significantly only in the TLNOR and TLHYP groups and remained elevated after the taper (p < 0.016). Time to exhaustion in the LHTL increased after both the 4-week training period and the taper compared to the baseline (p < 0.001). Although the 4-week training promoted substantial increases in muscle glycogen content, TTE increased in LHTL condition.

OBJECTIVES: Core muscle injury is a debilitating condition that causes chronic groin pain in athletes, particularly common in soccer players. The condition is characterised by pain in the inguinal region and can lead to a significant number of absences from high-intensity physical activity. It is caused by repetitive overload without proper counterbalance from the abdominal muscles, hip flexors, and adductors in susceptible athletes. Surgical indications for core muscle injury consider cases where non-surgical treatments have not provided sufficient relief. The aim of this study was to assess the results of surgical intervention for core muscle injury using the technique employed by the Sports Medicine Group of (Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Hospital das Clínicas - Universidade de São Paulo). The procedure involves releasing the anterior portion of the tendon of the rectus abdominis muscle near the pubic symphysis, along with proximal tenotomy of the adductor longus muscle tendon. METHODS: This study utilised a consecutive historical cohort analysis of the medical records of 45 male athletes, of which, 75.6% were professional soccer players, who underwent surgical treatment between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2021. The participants included active athletes aged between 18 and 40 years, with a mean age of 23.9 years, and were diagnosed with myotendinous core muscle injury. These athletes experienced pain in the pubic symphysis and adductor tendon region and had previously undergone medical treatment and physical therapy for a duration of three to six months without significant improvement. RESULTS: The average time for athletes to return to sport after surgery was 135 days, with a majority of participants being soccer and futsal players. The surgical intervention yielded promising results, with a positive correlation between unilateral injuries and the time taken to return to sport. The complication rate was low, at 6.7%. Notably, the rate of symptom resolution was high, at 93.3%. Furthermore, the analysis indicated that the player's position on the field significantly influenced the discharge period, suggesting that the game position plays a role in the recovery process. CONCLUSION: The combined surgical procedure involving the release of the rectus abdominis tendon and adductor longus muscle tenotomy demonstrates favourable outcomes for athletes with core muscle injury. This study provides strong support for the effectiveness of this surgical approach in managing the condition and offers a potential path to recovery and return to sports activities. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT

The total anaerobic contribution (AC[La-]+PCr) is a valid and reliable methodology. However, the active muscle mass plays an important role in the AC[La-]+PCr determination, which might influence its reliability. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of two exhaustive intensities on the reliability of the AC[La-]+PCr during a one-legged knee extension (1L-KE) exercise. Thirteen physically active males were submitted to a graded exercise to determine the peak power output (PPO) in the 1L-KE. Then, two constant-load exercises were conducted to task failure at 100% (TTF100) and 110% (TTF110) of PPO, and the exercises were repeated on a third day. The blood lactate accumulation and the oxygen uptake after exercise were used to estimate the anaerobic lactic and alactic contributions, respectively. Higher values of AC[La-]+PCr were found after the TTF100 compared to TTF110 (p=0.042). In addition, no significant differences (p=0.432), low systematic error (80.9 mL), and a significant ICC (0.71; p=0.004) were found for AC[La-]+PCr in the TTF100. However, an elevated coefficient of variation was found (13.7%). In conclusion, we suggest the use of the exhaustive efforts performed at 100% of the PPO with the 1L-KE model, but its elevated individual variability must be carefully considered in future studies.

ABSTRACT

Hypoxia exposure may promote neuroprotection for people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). However, to implement hypoxia in practical settings and direct future research, it is necessary to organize the current knowledge about hypoxia responses/effects in PwPD. Thus, the present scoping review elucidates the evidence about hypoxia exposure applied to PwPD. Following the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews, papers were searched in PubMed/NCBI, Web of Science, and Scopus (descriptors: Parkinson and hypoxia, mountain, or altitude). We included original articles published in English until August 12, 2023. Eight studies enrolled participants with early to moderate stages of disease. Acute responses demonstrated that PwPD exposed to normobaric hypoxia presented lower hypoxia ventilatory responses (HVR), perceptions of dyspnea, and sympathetic activations. Cumulative exposure to hypobaric hypoxia (living high; 7 days; altitude not reported) induced positive effects on motor symptoms (hypokinesia) and perceptions of PwPD (quality of life and living with illness). Normobaric hypoxia (isocapnic rebreathe, 14 days, three times/day of 5-7 min at 8-10 % of O2) improved HVR. The included studies reported no harmful effects. Although these results demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of hypoxia exposure applied to PwPD, we also discuss the methodological limitations of the selected experimental design (no randomized controlled trials), the characterization of the hypoxia doses, and the range of symptoms investigated. Thus, despite the safety of both normobaric hypoxia and hypobaric hypoxia for early to moderate levels of disease, the current literature is still incipient, limiting the use of hypoxia exposure in practical settings.

ABSTRACT

Landfills often become a source of environmental impact due to the percolation of the leachate (liquid resulting from the decomposition of buried waste), which can eventually disperse and contaminate the soil and water bodies. This study aimed to evaluate quantitatively and spatially the leachate plume from the former Belo Horizonte landfill in the Coqueiros and Taiobas watersheds by using tritium (3H) concentration in nineteen (19) sampling points: 14 groundwater, 4 surface water and 1 leachate. Among the methodologies applied to determine the 3H content in the leachate, pre-filtration proved to be the most effective due to the ease treating of the sample, as well as the identical results obtained compared to the traditional method. The 3H contents resulted in concentrations up to thirty times higher in the leachate (=96,19 to 111,87 TU) and ten times in groundwater (PM23/3 = 45,06 TU), compared to the calculated threshold (TS) of rainfall tritium (TS_3Hrain = 3,41 TU). Temporal series results indicate no trend and no influence of seasonality regarding the entry of pluvial tritium, leachate liquid level and wells water level. The 3H contour maps shows a transport of the mixture (water and leachate) towards the Coqueiros stream, with a higher concentration of leachate in wells closer to the landfill slope (PM13, PM14, PM15, and PM23) and in the southwest margin of the Coqueiros stream (PM17). In the furthest portion of the landfill, 3H levels are higher than the base threshold only at the deepest level of PM20 (=3,90 TU), possibly due to factors such as: i) denser character of the leachate compared to groundwater; ii) greater influence of recharge for regions further away from the landfill slope; and iii) the presence of the rock about 50 m from the surface. Based on the hydrogeological conceptual model, the transport of the leachate water mixture in the groundwater water compartment of the Coqueiros watershed basin seems to follow a piston or dispersion flow, with a small Peclet number (Pd = 0,05, as an example), as indicated by the high correlation coefficient values (R2 ≈ 0,85 to 0,99) from graphic interpolation. The mixture of water and leachate results in a transient time (tt) ≈ 30 years and linear velocity (Vl) ≈ 3-14 m/year in the interpolated sections. These indicate a coherent correlation with the mean hydraulic conductivity (K ≈ 29,34 m/year), as they result in effective porosity values between (Ne) ≈ 0.16 to 0.36, which corresponds to Ne range for unconsolidated sediments, similar to the wells lithotype profiles. Time series evaluation combined with lumped parameter approach suggest to be an interesting way to better understanding the HCM, and, therefore, to determine hydrodynamic parameters using tritium as a tracer.
