ABSTRACT

The species of the genus Labrundinia (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanypodinae: Pentaneurini) are revised, described and figured. Keys to known adult males, pupae and larvae are provided. Fourteen previously known species are redescribed, and 25 species from Neotropical region are diagnosed and described as new to science. These species treated are L. amandae sp. n., L. amazonica sp. n., L. becki Beck et Beck, L. carolae sp. n., L. costaricae sp. n., L. fera Roback, L. fiorelinii sp. n., L. fittkaui sp. n., L. fosteri Roback, L. hirsuta Roback, L. gregi sp. n., L. jasoni sp. n., L. johannseni Beck et Beck, L. kogilamae sp. n., L. longipalpis Goetghebuer, L. mayaca sp. n., L. meta Roback, L. multidentata sp. n., L. nathani sp. n., L. neopilosella Beck et Beck, L. nicaraguensis sp. n., L. opela Roback, L. panamensis sp. n., L. parabecki Roback, L. parafittkaui sp. n., L. parareniformis sp. n., L. paravirescens sp. n., L. paulae sp. n., L. pilosella Loew, L. reniformis sp. n., L. robacki sp. n., L. semicurvata sp. n., L. setosa sp. n., L. separata Edwards, L. sofiae sp. n., L. tenata Roback, L. trilucida sp. n., L. unicolor sp. n., L. virescens Beck et Beck. A diagnosis of the genus is presented and morphological differences to closely related genera are discussed.

A bibliography of significant taxonomic papers on Elmidae (Coleoptera, Polyphaga, Byrrhoidea), and a checklist of valid species and subspecies and their geographic distributions are provided. Forty-seven genera and 430 valid species are included. Maps show the geographic distribution of the genera by country.

ABSTRACT

Coleoptera é a maior ordem de Insecta e apesar de apenas 4 por cento das espécies serem aquáticas, o grupo apresenta grande abundância em ambientes de água doce. Este trabalho visa ampliar o conhecimento do grupo principalmente em sistemas lóticos. São propostas chaves de identificação para larvas e adultos de 17 famílias de Coleoptera aquáticos conhecidas do Estado, com o objetivo de auxiliar pesquisadores pouco familiarizados com a identificação deste grupo. Todo o material estudado foi coletado no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, como parte do Programa BIOTA/FAPESP.


Coleoptera is the most species-rich order among the Insecta and although only 4 percent of its species are aquatic, it is an abundant group in the freshwater environments. This work aims to expand knowledge of the group primarily in lotic systems. Are proposed identification keys for larvae and adults of 17 families of aquatic Coleoptera known from the state, to assist researchers who are unfamiliar with the identification of this group. All material studied was collected in São Paulo, Brazil as part of the BIOTA/FAPESP Program.

ABSTRACT

The family Elmidae Curtis, 1830 has cosmopolitan distribution and most species inhabit riffles on streams and rivers, hence the name "riffle beetle". In recent years, this family has been featured in papers addressing the assessment and environmental monitoring of water quality. In Brazil, studies on the family remain scarce and the present investigation is a pioneering study in the state of São Paulo. This study aims to propose a taxonomic key for the identification of larvae of Elmidae genera known to occur in the State, as well as to report new records and the distribution of these genera. The material analyzed was collected from various locations in each of 15 drainage basins from 2005 to 2010. The identification key includes 12 genera (Austrolimnius Carter & Zeck, 1929, Heterelmis Sharp, 1882, Hexacylloepus Hinton, 1940, Hexanchorus Sharp, 1882, Huleechius Brown, 1981, Macrelmis Motschulsky, 1859, Microcylloepus Hinton, 1935, Neoelmis Musgrave, 1935, Phanocerus Sharp, 1882, Potamophilops Grouvelle, 1896, Stegoelmis Hinton, 1939 and Xenelmis Hinton, 1936) known in Brazil as well as three morphotypes designated herein as Genus A, Genus M and Genus X. The genus Hexanchorus is recorded for the first time in the state of São Paulo.

ABSTRACT

The genus Parapentaneura was established in 2006 and is composed of a single species, Parapentaneura bentogomensis, originally from Mato Grosso State. This species was collected in São Paulo State and is thus redescribed. The specimens from both localities were compared, adding new characters to the description of the species and emending the genus diagnosis. The new record increases considerably the geographical distribution of Parapentaneura.


O gênero Parapentaneura foi estabelecido em 2006 e apresenta somente uma espécie, Parapentaneura bentogomensis, proveniente do Estado do Mato Grosso. Esta espécie foi coletada no Estado de São Paulo e então redescrita detalhadamente, apresentando caracteres adicionais. Os espécimes de ambas as localidades foram comparados, possibilitando o aperfeiçoamento da diagnose do gênero. O novo registro amplia consideravelmente a distribuição geográfica de Parapentaneura.
