ABSTRACT

Background and objectives This study aims to introduce an innovative functional assessment tool designed for CrossFit athletes, to identify a high risk of injury at the shoulder joint. Additionally, the study seeks to examine both inter-rater reliability, which was tested in 40 CrossFit participants, and test-retest reliability, which was assessed in twenty subjects. Methodology CrossFit Functional Assessment Battery for the Shoulder Joint (CrossFit FABS) is a newly created instrument presented for the first time. The evaluation of the performance of its six items aimed to reveal deficits that could contribute to incidents of shoulder injuries. For this purpose, 40 healthy CrossFit participants were concurrently but independently examined by two raters, and twenty healthy adults active in sports were assessed by the main investigator at two different time points. Cohen's kappa coefficient was used to analyze categorical data with an ordinal structure. Results Inter-rater reliability ranged from 0.824 to 1 (P = 0.000) and test-retest reliability was 0.661 to 0.906 (P < 0.001) for each test of CrossFit FABS. A strong to almost perfect correlation was demonstrated for all the variables between the two examiners. Moderate to almost perfect correlation was shown through test-retest procedures. Conclusions The proposed test battery was established as a reliable tool for evaluating performance routines that represent high injury-risk elements for the shoulder joint in CrossFit athletes.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: In football, on-field rehabilitation (OFR) is critical during injury recovery for a player's safe return to sports (RTS). The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an OFR framework for RTS in injured male professional football players. Trial design: A prospective block-randomised controlled-parallel trial was conducted (level of evidence 1b). Methods: Male professional football players (mean age, 26.3±3.6 years) from Greece diagnosed with an acute, lower limb musculoskeletal (MSK) injury (confirmed clinically and through imaging) participated in the study. During rehabilitation, the participants' OFR was guided by either the On-Field Rehabilitation (On FI.RE.) accelerated framework (experimental group) or a traditional OFR framework for a late injury recovery phase (comparison group). Between July 2021 and January 2022, 76 players were randomly allocated to the experimental group (n=38) and the comparison group (n=38). Participants were blinded during the study regarding intervention therapeutic protocols. The primary outcome measure was the effect of On FI.RE. framework on the time needed to return to team training (RTT) participation. The correlation between the time needed to return to on-field activity and RTT was calculated. Subsequent injuries were registered for a 12-month follow-up period. Results: The intervention protocol, On FI.RE. framework, had a statistically significant effect on the time needed to RTT (F(1) = 49 626, p<0.001) with a large effect size (ES; η2=0.422) and fewer days (mean=23.8±9.1 days) needed than the comparison group (mean=30.3±9.8 days). There was a strong correlation between return to on-field activity and the time needed to RTT (r(76) = 0.901, p<0001) with a large ES (r>0.5). Six subsequent injuries were registered in the traditional OFR framework group, and one subsequent injury in the On FI.RE. framework group after a follow-up period of 12 months. Conclusion: The On FI.RE., an accelerated OFR framework during injury recovery, is more effective than a traditional OFR framework, reducing the time a player needs to RTS. It entails a very low risk of reinjury. Trial registration number: NCT05163470.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Basic military training (BMT) has been associated with increased morbidity burden. Nevertheless, the exact epidemiology of the encountered cases in the BMT of Greek recruits has never been assessed. The aim of this quality improvement project was to investigate for the first time the clinical patterns, rates, and severity of symptoms leading recruits to visit the infirmary of a recruit training center and use this knowledge to provide a practical guidance for the physicians in charge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All medical cases which were consecutively examined for the time range from November 2021 to September 2022 at the infirmary of the Hellenic Naval recruit training center in Poros, Greece, were retrospectively analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify independent predictors of "severe clinical status" (i.e., overnight sick bay confinement and/or transfer to a tertiary hospital within 24 h) and absence from BMT for at least 1 day. RESULTS: A total of 2,623 medical cases were examined during four recruit seasons from November 2021 to September 2022. Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) and musculoskeletal injuries were the most frequent reasons for a recruit's visit to the infirmary (33.9% and 30.2%, respectively). 6.7% of the total cases were identified as having "severe clinical status." Specifically, in psychiatric, urological, and cardiovascular cases, febrile events were all independently associated with increased risk of "severe clinical status." There was a positive association between training week and absence from BMT, while febrile events and spring recruit season were also independently linked with increased probability of absence from BMT for at least 1 day. CONCLUSIONS: URTIs and musculoskeletal complaints were the primary reasons for recruits' presentation at the infirmary of a Greek recruit training center, leading to severe rates of attrition. Further registries and quality improvement projects are warranted to reach specific conclusions and reduce BMT-related morbidity and its subsequent implications.

ABSTRACT

The enhanced paper grip test (EGPT) quantitatively assesses lower limb strength. EGPT assesses the hallux grip force by reacting a pulling force derived from a card, being positioned underneath the participant's hallux. This study aimed to investigate the repeatability and clinical applicability of the EPGT for assessing foot muscle strength. EPGT force was measured using a dynamometer. The reliability of the measurement of EPGT force was assessed by having two examiners performing the test on the same group of healthy adults. Clinical applicability was assessed in community-dwelling adults of both genders. EPGT force was recorded for both feet using the same standardised protocol for all participants. Regarding reliability, 20 healthy adults aged 23.04±5.5 years participated in the present study. The EGPT demonstrated good to excellent test-retest (ICC1,2 0.8 to 0.86) and interrater reliability (ICC1,2 0.82 to 0.88). A convenience sample of 15 community-dwelling adults (71.6±7.8 years, 68.5% women) was recruited for clinical applicability testing. All participants performed the test with mean score 15±5.7 N. EPGT is a reliable measurement of the hallux grip force strength and can be used for clinical and research purposes.

ABSTRACT

Acute noncontact Lower Extremity (LE) injuries constitute a significant problem in team sports. Despite extensive research, current knowledge on the risk factors of LE injuries is limited to static simplistic models of instantaneous cause and effect relationships ignoring the time dimension and the embedded complexity of LE injuries. Even though complex systems approaches have been used in various cases to improve policy and intervention effectiveness, there is limited research on predicting and managing LE injuries. This creates an opportunity to fill the gap in the current literature by applying the System Dynamics (SD) methodology to model LE injuries. The proposed approach allows for synthesizing risk factors and examining their interaction. This paper makes the first step towards such an approach by developing a causal loop model revealing the etiology of LE injuries. A causal loop model for LE injuries is developed via an extensive literature review and brainstorming with experts. In contrast to the traditional static approaches, the proposed model reveals some of the complexity and nonlinear relationships of the various sports injury risk factors. The derived causal loop model may then be used to quantify these interactions and develop a simulation model. This will be achieved by operationalizing and incorporating the main risk factors that impact LE injuries in an integrated sports injury prediction model. In this way, plausible strategies for preventing LE injuries can be tested prior implementation and thereby achieve optimization of intervention programs.

ABSTRACT

Therapeutic exercise is integral to the comprehensive rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular disease and, as such, is recommended by the American Heart Association as a valuable and effective treatment method for such patients. The type of exercise applied to these patients is aerobic and resistance exercise with mild intensities and loads to avoid overloading the cardiovascular system. Blood flow restriction exercise is a novel exercise modality in clinical settings that has in many studies a similar effect on muscle hypertrophy, strength, and cardiovascular response to training at a 70% strength level without blood flow restriction. Since this exercise mode does not require high-intensity loads, it can be a safe method for improving muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance, and functionality in cardiovascular patients. Given that, the objective of this review is to assess and summarize existing evidence for the use of blood flow restriction in cardiovascular patients. A scoping review of existing clinical trials was conducted. Eleven studies were examined that suggested the use of blood flow restrictions in cardiovascular patients to achieve improvements in muscle strength, functionality, and cardiovascular parameters such as blood pressure decrease.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to translate and validate into the Greek language and setting the Post-COVID-19 Functional Status (PCFS) scale. Greeks aged ≥18 years who recovered form COVID-19 (≥ 14 days since diagnosis), were invited to participate. This cross-sectional study followed international guidelines regarding the translation process (forward and backward) and the evaluation of the PCFS. Reliability was assessed by test-retest analyses using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95%CI. For the validation, all participants completed the European Quality of Life-5 (EQ-5D-5L), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire. 82 adults (49 females, aged 40.2 ± 6.1) participated in the study. The Greek version of the PCFS demonstrated excellent test-retest reliability, with an ICC of 0.9 (95% CI 0.90- 0.95). The Cronbach's alpha value was 0.9, indicating good internal consistency. The PCFS score was strongly correlated with the EQ-5D-5L (r=0.6, p≤0.001) and weakly correlated with the HADS (r=0.41;p≤0.001). The Greek version of the PCFS was successfully adapted into Greek and is recommended to be used across clinical settings and research.

Manual therapy (MT) techniques typically incorporate localised touch on the skin with the application of specific kinetic forces. The contribution of localised touch to the effectiveness of MT techniques has not been evaluated. This study investigated the immediate effects of MT versus localisation training (LT) on pain intensity and range of movement (ROM) for neck pain. In this single-blind randomised controlled trial thirty eligible neck pain volunteers (23 females and 7 males), aged 28.63 ± 12.49 years, were randomly allocated to MT or to a motionless (LT) group. A single three-minute treatment session was delivered to each group's cervico-thoracic area. The LT involved tactile sensory stimulation applied randomly to one out of a nine-block grid. Subjects were asked to identify the number of the square being touched, reflecting a different location on the region of skin. MT involved three-minute anteroposterior (AP) glides and sustained natural apophyseal glides (SNAG) techniques. Pre- and post-intervention pain intensity were assessed using a pressure pain threshold (PPT) algometer and the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS). Neck ROM was recorded with a bubble inclinometer. Improvements in ROM and self-reported pain were recorded in both groups (p < 0.001) without differences in NPRS, ROM or PPT scores between groups (p > 0.05). Tactile sensory training (localisation) was as effective as MT in reducing neck pain, suggesting a component of MT's analgesic effect to be related with the element of localised touch rather than the forces induced during passive movements.

Objectives: The purpose of this multicenter cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between SARC-F, fear of COVID 19, anxiety, depression and physical activity in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: This study was conducted in 3 hemodialysis centers in Greece during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sarcopenia risk was assessed using the Greek version of SARC-F (≥4). Demographic and medical history were collected from the patient's medical charts. The participants were also asked to fill the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) questionnaire. Results: A hundred and thirty-two (132) patients on hemodialysis (92 men, 70.75±13.14 years) were enrolled. Sarcopenia risk (utilizing the SARC-F) was found in 41.7% of patients on hemodialysis. The average duration of hemodialysis was 3.94±4.58 years. The mean score values for SARC-F, FCV-19S and HADS were 3.9±2.57, 21.08±5.32, and 15.02±6.69, respectively. The majority of patients were physically inactive. The SARC-F scores were strongly associated with age (r=56; p<0.001), HADS (r=0.55; p<0.001), levels of physical activity (r=0.5; p<0.001), but not with FCV-19S (r=0.27; p<0.001). Conclusion: A statistically significant relationship was recorded between sarcopenia risk and age, anxiety/depression and levels of physical inactivity in patients on hemodialysis. Future studies are necessary in order to evaluate the association of specific characteristics of patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of supervised remote rehabilitation programs comprising novel methods of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training for women with urinary incontinence (UI). DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis including randomized controlled trials (RCTs), involving novel supervised PFM rehabilitation programs as intervention groups (e.g., mobile applications programs, web-based programs, vaginal devices) versus more traditional PFM exercise groups (acting as control); both sets of groups being offered remotely. METHODS: Data have been searched and retrieved from the electronic databases of Medline, PUBMED, and PEDro using relevant key words and MeSH terms. All included study data were handled as reported in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the evaluation of their quality was undertaken utilizing the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool 2 (RoB2) for RCTs. The included RCTs, involved adult women with stress UI (SUI) or mixed urinary incontinence, where SUI were the most predominant symptoms. Exclusion criteria involved pregnant women or up to 6-month postpartum, systemic diseases and malignancies, major gynecological surgeries or gynecological problems, neurological dysfunction or mental impairments. The searched outcomes included subjective and objective improvements of SUI and exercise adherence in PFM exercises. Meta-analysis was conducted and included studies pulled by the same outcome measure. RESULTS: The systematic review included 8 RCTs with 977 participants. Novel rehabilitation programs included mobile applications (1 study), web-based programs (1 study) and vaginal devices (6 studies) versus more traditional remote PFM training, involving home-based PFM exercise programs (8 studies). Estimated quality with Cochrane's RoB2, presented the 80% of the included studies as "some concerns" and the 20% as "high risk." Meta-analysis included 3 studies with no heterogeneity (I2 = 0) across them. Weak-evidenced results presented home PFM training equally effective with novel PFM training methods (mean difference: 0.13, 95% confidence interval: -0.47, 0.73), with small total effect size (0.43). CONCLUSIONS: Novel PFM rehabilitation programs presented as effective (but not superior) to traditional ones in women with SUI, both offered remotely. However, individual parameters of novel remote rehabilitation including supervision by the health professional, remains in question and larger RCTs are required. Connection between devices and applications in combination with real-time synchronous communication between patient and clinician during treatment is challenged for further research across novel rehabilitation programs.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of cold-water immersion (CWI) and sports massage on delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in amateur athletes. Sixty male amateur athletes were randomised into four equal groups (n = 15) receiving either CWI, sports massage, their combination, or served as controls after applying plyometric training to their lower extremities. The main outcomes measures were pain, exertion, rectus femoris perimeter, knee flexion range of motion, knee extensors isometric strength and serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels examined before the plyometric training, immediately after the treatment, and 24, 48 and 72 h post exercise. We observed no significant differences between study groups in the most tested variables. CWI improved pain compared to the combined application of CWI and sports massage, and the control group both on the second and third day post exercise. Sports massage combined with CWI also led to a significant reduction in pain sensation compared to the control group. In conclusion the treatment interventions used were effective in reducing pain but were unable to affect other important adaptations of DOMS. Based on the above, sports scientists should reconsider the wide use of these interventions as a recovery strategy for athletes with DOMS.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] To describe the functional activity and the communication-social ability levels of youths with developmental disabilities and to determine whether demographic factors predict these levels. [Participants and Methods] A mixed, observational and qualitative, study in which parents of students with developmental disabilities were interviewed based on the WeeFIM questions. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analysed. [Results] Data were collected for 30 youths with mild to severe developmental disabilities with mean age 18.5 ± 2.7 years (19 males). Mean WeeFIM total score was 106.2 ± 10.9, indicating relatively high functional and communication-social ability. No significant difference was observed for the total WeeFIM score between males and females and between adolescents and young adults with developmental disabilities. Main themes emerged from the interviews were: Difficulties with smooth and stable walking, transfers to/from bathtub and stairs. Also, youths are expressing a need for independence in self-care, while relationships with their peers are difficult and problems are primarily solved with help from their parents. [Conclusion] Despite the high functional and communication-social ability levels of a group of youths with developmental disabilities, parents revealed that youths had certain difficulties. Therapy should address such difficulties to promote independence and participation of these young people in the community.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] This study evaluated the effects of ankle elastic bandaging, taping, and kinesiology taping on the neuromuscular control of the lower extremities before and after their application and after exercise in soccer athletes. [Participants and Methods] Fifty-five amateur soccer players were randomly divided into four research sub-groups either receiving bandaging (n=15), taping (n=15), and kinesiology taping (n=15) on their ankle or serving as controls (n=10). The dynamic stability of the non-dominant limb was assessed through the star excursion balance test (SEBT) in three research conditions: a) before sports taping application, b) after the application, and c) after a 15 min laboratory simulation of soccer activities. [Results] Taping and kinesiology taping improved the dynamic stabilization of the lower limb more statistically significantly than bandaging. The addition of exercise significantly improved the SEBT results in the taping and kinesiology taping more than the bandaging and control groups. [Conclusion] Exercise activates the proprioceptive mechanisms of the lower limb and improves its neuromuscular control. This functional improvement of the lower limb appears to be enhanced after ankle taping and kinesiology taping compared with elastic bandaging and controls.

OBJECTIVES: As in Greek settings there is a need to develop validated patient-reported outcomes (PROs) for pelvic floor dysfunction, this study's aim was to cross-culturally adapt and validate the Australian Pelvic Floor Questionnaire (APFQ) into Greek, a 42-item PRO for routine urogynaecological evaluation of four domains; bladder, bowel, prolapse and sexual function. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-cultural translation was completed through official multistage forward and back-translation process. Validation involved administering the adapted APFQ (APFQ_GR) to women visiting Greek community-based healthcare settings. International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF) was also administered. Comparison between women with and without pelvic floor dysfunction (symptomatic versus control) was also undertaken for exploring discriminatory validity. Test-retest reliability was explored by re-administering APFQ_GR 10-15 days following initial testing and internal consistency was explored against each domain separately as well as total items' score. RESULTS: Greek APFQ translation was successfully performed and piloted to a women sample with varying levels of education for comprehensibility, thus, satisfying the questionnaire's face validity. 100 women (53.7 ± 13.1 years-old) participated in validation, 63 of which predominantly complained of urinary incontinence (UI) and 37 were asymptomatic. There were no ceiling effects. Floor effects were detected for women without symptoms. Moderate to very strong correlations were yielded between APFQ_GR total score and bladder domain, respectively, with ICIQ-UI SF single-item and total score (ρ = 0.403-0.758, p < 0.001), indicating satisfactory criterion-related validity. Moderate correlations were yielded for the sexual function domain with APFQ_GR total score and weaker correlations were found in the other two domains. Independent samples t-test yielded significant differences across the questionnaire's scores (p < 0.001), indicating good discriminatory validity between symptomatic and asymptomatic women. Test-retest reliability was excellent (ICC3,1 = ≥0.998). Internal consistency was very good for each domain and total items' score (Cronbach's α = 0.714-0.924). CONCLUSIONS: The Greek APFQ was proven appropriate, comprehensible, valid and reliable for women with urinary incontinence and can thus, be used across Greek healthcare settings. Prolapse and bowel domains merit further research.

ABSTRACT

Forward head posture measurement can be conducted using various methods and instruments. The selection of the appropriate method requires the factors of validity and reliability to be considered. This systematic review reports on the reliability and validity of the non-radiographic methods examined for measuring forward head posture. The review identified relevant studies following a systematic search of electronic databases. The studies were assessed for quality by two independent reviewers using a critical appraisal tool. The studies' data were extracted and assessed, and the results were synthesized qualitatively using a level of evidence approach. Twenty-one studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Both reliability and validity were investigated for five studies, whereas reliability only was investigated for 17 studies. In total, 11 methods of forward head posture measurement were evaluated in the retrieved studies. The validity of the methods ranged from low to very high. The reliability of the methods ranged from moderate to excellent. The strongest levels of evidence for reliability support the use of classic photogrammetry. For validity, the evidence is not conclusive. Further studies are required to strengthen the level of evidence on the reliability and validity of the remaining methods. It is recommended that this point be addressed in future research.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two lower extremity strengthening programs using isoinertial resistance or free weights on amateur soccer players' physical performance indicators. METHODS: Thirty-five amateur soccer players (average age 22.6±5.1 years) were randomly assigned to isoinertial group (N.=11) or free-weight group (N.=11), or control group (N.=13). The groups performed two training sessions per week for six weeks. Before and after the strengthening implementation, physical performance indicators were evaluated, including the isokinetic knee extensors and flexors' strength, power, speed, and agility. The significance level was set at P<0.05. RESULTS: The isoinertial training resistance led to an increase in the hamstrings' eccentric strength at 60°/s and 150°/s (P<0.05) compared to the free-weight resistance (P>0.05) and the controls (P>0.05). No other significant adaptations were observed in the other isokinetic strength, power, speed (10-m, P=0.052) and agility measurements (Illinois Agility Test, P=0.059). In ratio (knee flexors/knee extensors) the only differences observed were at 150°/s for isoinertial group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Isoinertial resistance training during semisquatting can enhance the hamstrings' eccentric performance and the soccer players' speed and agility compared to the classic free-weight training program, which should consider when designing strength and injury prevention programs.

Introduction Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected the healthcare system and the practice of physiotherapists. Telerehabilitation is an alternative method of delivering physiotherapy services. The aim of this study was to investigate physiotherapists' knowledge, beliefs, and willingness to use telerehabilitation in Greece during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, Greek physiotherapists completed an online survey between January and February 2022. A questionnaire was distributed via the Panhellenic Physiotherapy Association (PSF). The questionnaire involved 26 items on demographic background, use of technology, overall perceptions, the experience of telerehabilitation, and their opinion on the future of telerehabilitation. The study protocol was approved by the Ethical Committee of the University of Patras, Greece. Results Participants in this study were 213 physiotherapists (female 57.7%; mean age 39.84±8 years). Most physiotherapists (n=118; 55.4%) were working in a private clinic in the areas of outpatient orthopedics, geriatrics, and neurorehabilitation. Overall, most participants (55%) reported increased use of telerehabilitation strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 130 physiotherapists (n=61.3%) believed that telerehabilitation may be beneficial as a supplementary way of patient management. Greek physiotherapists made use of low-cost and easily accessible digital technologies, such as mobile phones and online meeting tools (e.g., Skype, Zoom). Although most physiotherapists (79.8%) reported that they wanted to receive more information about digital technology and telerehabilitation, only 42.1% of them did intend to work remotely after the pandemic. Conclusion Most of the participants were willing to deliver physiotherapy via telerehabilitation. Specific education and training programs need to be provided to physiotherapists during and after the pandemic. Healthcare managers should consider the use of telerehabilitation and design guidelines and policies to manage telerehabilitation practices in Greece.

Although the effectiveness of static self-stretching exercises (SSSEs) and foam roller self-massaging (FRSM) in joint range of motion and muscle strength of the lower limbs has been extensively investigated, little is known about their effectiveness on the posterior trunk muscles. The present study aimed to investigate the acute effects of two 7-min SSSEs and FRSM intervention protocols on the range of trunk movements and the strength of the trunk extensors. Twenty-five healthy active males (n = 14) and females (n = 11) performed each intervention separately, one week apart. The range of motion (ROM) of the trunk-hip flexion (T-HF), the ROM of the trunk side-flexion (TSF) and rotation (TR) bilaterally, as well as the isometric maximum strength (TESmax) and endurance (TESend) of the trunk extensors were measured before and after each intervention. The ROMs of T-HF, TSF, and TR were significantly increased following both SSSEs and FRSM. The TESmax and TESend were also significantly increased after FRSM, but decreased following SSSEs. While both interventions were effective in increasing the range of motion of the trunk, a single 7-min session of FRSM presented more advantages over a similar duration SSSEs protocol due to the increase in the strength of the trunk extensors it induced.

Background and objectives: Osteoarthritis (OA) is among the most common degenerative diseases that induce pain, stiffness and reduced functionality. Various physiotherapy techniques and methods have been used for the treatment of OA, including soft tissue techniques, therapeutic exercises, and manual techniques. The primary aim of this systemic review was to evaluate the short-and long-term efficacy of manual therapy (MT) in patients with knee OA in terms of decreasing pain and improving knee range of motion (ROM) and functionality. Materials and Methods: A computerised search on the PubMed, PEDro and CENTRAL databases was performed to identify controlled randomised clinical trials (RCTs) that focused on MT applications in patients with knee OA. The keywords used were 'knee OA', 'knee arthritis', 'MT', 'mobilisation', 'ROM' and 'WOMAC'. Results: Six RCTs and randomised crossover studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis. The available studies indicated that MT can induce a short-term reduction in pain and an increase in knee ROM and functionality in patients with knee OA. Conclusions: MT techniques can contribute positively to the treatment of patients with knee OA by reducing pain and increasing functionality. Further research is needed to strengthen these findings by comparing the efficacy of MT with those of other therapeutic techniques and methods, both in the short and long terms.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] The present study aimed to examine the existence and degree of possible asymmetries of functional test performance and their intercorrelations in the lower extremities of young basketball players. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-seven healthy male basketball players (age: 15.52 ± 1.37 years) were examined for the symmetric function of their lower extremities using triple hop for distance tests in the sagittal and frontal plane (medial-lateral), the Y-balance test and a vertical jump test. [Results] Participants exhibited statistically significant side-to-side differences in only the medial triple hop test, as they jumped further on their non-dominant for stability lower limb. No other asymmetries were observed in the rest of the functional tests. Significant correlations were also indicated between the vertical jumptest and the three directions of the triple hop test for both lower limbs. [Conclusion] Our findings proved that young basketball players present a symmetrical picture of functional performance, as revealed by the evaluation of various functional tests. The only significant asymmetric adaptation observed in the medial triple hop test will have to be strengthened by future studies to be implemented in injury prevention programs.
