ABSTRACT

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has achieved high clinical efficacy in treating malignancies in recent years and is thus gradually becoming an important therapy for patients with advanced tumor for its benefits in reducing side effects and improving patients' immune status. However, it has not been internationally recognized for cancer treatment because TCM's anti-tumor mechanism is not fully elucidated, limiting its clinical application and international promotion. This review traced the mechanism of the TCM-mediated tumor cell death pathway and its effect on remodeling the tumor immune microenvironment, its direct impact on the microenvironment, its anti-tumor effect in combination with immunotherapy, and the current status of clinical application of TCM on tumor treatment. TCM can induce tumor cell death in many regulatory cell death (RCD) pathways, including apoptosis, autophagy, pyroptosis, necroptosis, and ferroptosis. In addition, TCM-induced cell death could increase the immune cells' infiltration with an anti-tumor effect in the tumor tissue and elevate the proportion of these cells in the spleen or peripheral blood, enhancing the anti-tumor capacity of the tumor-bearing host. Moreover, TCM can directly affect immune function by increasing the population or activating the sub-type immune cells with an anti-tumor role. It was concluded that TCM could induce a pan-tumor death modality, remodeling the local TIME differently. It can also improve the systemic immune status of tumor-bearing hosts. This review aims to establish a theoretical basis for the clinical application of TCM in tumor treatment and to provide a reference for TCM's potential in combination with immunotherapy in cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

Necroptosis has received increasing attention and is extensively studied as a recently discovered mode of cell death distinct from necrosis and apoptosis. It is a programmed cell death with a necrotic morphology that occurs in various biological processes, including inflammation, immune response, embryonic development, and metabolic abnormalities. Necroptosis is indispensable in maintaining tissue homeostasis in vivo and closely correlates with the occurrence and development of various diseases. First, we outlined the etiology of necroptosis and how it affects the onset and development of prevalent liver diseases in this review. Additionally, we reviewed the therapeutic strategy by targeting the necroptosis pathway in related liver diseases. We conclude that the necroptosis signaling pathway is critical in the physiological control of liver diseases' onset, progression, and prognosis. It will likely be used as a therapeutic target in the future. Further research is required to determine the mechanisms governing the necroptosis signaling pathway and the effector molecules.

ABSTRACT

Since the outbreak of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in 2019, it has spread rapidly across the globe. Sleep disorders caused by COVID-19 have become a major concern for COVID-19 patients and recovered patients. So far, there's no effective therapy on this. Traditional Chinese therapy (TCT) has a great effect on sleep disorders, with rare side effects and no obvious withdrawal symptoms. The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, a neuroregulatory pathway in the central nervous system that uses cholinergic neurons and neurotransmitters to suppress inflammatory responses, has been reported to be associated with sleep disorders and psychiatric symptoms. Many studies have shown that TCT activates the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP), inhibits inflammation, and relieves associated symptoms. Therefore, we believe that TCT may be a potential therapeutic strategy to alleviate sleep disorders induced by COVID-19 through CAP. In this review, we analyzed the relationship between cytokine storm induced by Coronavirus and sleep disorders, explained the influence of CAP on sleep disorders, discussed the TCT's effect on CAP, and summarized the treatment effect of TCT on sleep disorders. Based on these practical researches and theoretical basis, we propose potential strategies to effectively improve the sleep disorders caused by COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in the identification of clinical oral Candida isolates. METHODS: In the first experiment, 170 suspected oral candidiasis patients were included. Unstimulated saliva was collected and cultured on solid plate (Sabouraud's agar) for 48 hours. Clinical isolates were analyzed by both PCR, which was used as golden standard, and MALDI-TOF MS. The diagnostic accuracy of MALDI-TOF MS for both C.albicans and non-C.albicans were investigated. In the second experiment, we tried to identify Candida isolates directly from positive liquid culture in a new cohort of 42 patients. MALDI-TOF MS identification of candida isolates were performed on positive liquid medium cultures directly. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 software package. RESULTS: Totally, 230 clinical Candida isolates were isolated from 212 oral candidiasis patients enrolled. Out of the 230 analyzed clinical isolates, C. albicans (65.65%, 151/230) was the most frequently isolated species, followed by C. glabrata (11.74%, 27/230), and other candida species. The sensitivity and specificity of MALDI-TOF in identification of C. albicans were 93.33% and 92.73% respectively, and those for non-C. albicans were 83.64% and 89.2% respectively. Oral rinse followed by culturing in Sabouraud's liquid medium for 24 hours yield the diagnostic accuracy of 78.42% in MALDI-TOF MS identification. CONCLUSIONS: C. albicans is the most frequent Candida spp. in oral candidiasis. MALDI-TOF MS is an effective and rapid method for identification of Candida spp. The on-plate based method generate much higher diagnostic accuracy than liquid culture based one.

ABSTRACT

This is the first paper to report a series of bismuth oxyfluoride/bismuth oxyiodide (BiOpFq/BiOxIy) nanocomposites with different F/I molar ratios, pH values, and reaction temperatures that were synthesized through a template-free and controlled hydrothermal method. These nanocomposites were characterized through scanning electron microscope energy dispersive microscopy (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Under visible-light irradiation, the BiOpFq/BiOxIy composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activities in the degradation of crystal violet (CV) and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA). The order of rate constants was BiOF/BiOI > BiOI ≫ BiOF. The photocatalytic activity of BiOF/BiOI composites reached a maximum rate constant of 0.2305 h-1, 1.2 times higher than that of BiOI and 100 times higher than that of BiOF. Thus, the derived BiOF/BiOI is crucial for photocatalytic activity enhancement. After the removal of CV in the third cycle, no apparent deficits in photocatalytic activity were observed, and the observed deficit was 8.2% during the fifth run. Overall, the catalytic activity and stability observed for the proposed composites were determined to be adequate under visible-light irradiation. For various scavengers, the noted quenching effects demonstrated that reactive O2- has a notable role in the degradation of the applied CV.

ABSTRACT

Candida spp. cause various infections involving the skin, mucosa, deep tissues, and even life-threatening candidemia. They are regarded as an important pathogen of nosocomial bloodstream infection, with a high mortality rate. As a result of prolonged exposure to azoles, the therapeutic failure associated with azoles resistance has become a serious challenge in clinical situations. Therefore, novel, alternative antifungals are required urgently. In the present study, the CLSI M-27A broth microdilution method and the 2,3-Bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) reduction assay were used to evaluate the antifungal effects of magnolol against various standard Candida strains in planktonic mode and biofilm formation, respectively. The antifungal activity of magnolol was demonstrated in planktonic C. albicans and non-albicans Candida species, especially fluconazole-resistant Candida krusei, with the minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 10 to 40 µg/mL. The BMIC90 (minimum concentration with 90% Candida biofilm inhibited) values of magnolol ranged from 20 to 160 µg/mL, whereas the BMIC90 values of fluconazole were more than 128 µg/mL. As an alternative and broad-spectrum antifungal agent, magnolol might be of benefit to the treatment of refractory Candida infection.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To validate the American College of Rheumatology Classification (ACR) Criteria (2012) for the diagnosis of primary Sjogren's syndrome in Chinese patients. METHODS: All patients involved in this study came from the Department of Oral Medicine Peking University Stomatology Hospital. They were devided into two groups of pSS and non-pSS according to the diagnoses made by two experts. Both groups of the patients had completed medical records kept in the hospital. RESULTS: A total of 239 pSS patients (160 with labial salivary gland biopsy, and 79 without biopsy) and 52 age-matched non-pSS patients [(55.17±14.295),and (55.90±13.38) years old, P>0.05] (9 with biopsy, and 43 without biopsy) were involved in this study. The sensitivity and specificity of ACR criteria in diagnosing pSS were 90.37 % and 88.46 % respectively. The positive and negative likelihood ratios were 7.83 and 0.109, respectively. The sensitivities of ACR criteria in diagnosing pSS patients with and without labial biopsy were 88.75% and 93.67 %, respectively, with specificities of 88.89% and 88.37%, respectively. The most sensitive item adopted in ACR criteria was the ocular staining score with a sensitivity of 85.77%, and the most specific item was the labial salivary gland biopsy, with a specificity of 88.89%. CONCLUSION: The sensitivity and specificity of ACR criteria in diagnosing Chinese pSS patients were relatively high, and may serve as the diagnosis criteria in research and clinical practice. However, the ACR criteria need to be validated and further revised in the future .
