ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Humic acid is a soil extract found widely around the world. This product includes some trace elements important for human's health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphometric and histopathological changes associated with an experimental periodontitis model in rats in response to systemic administration of humic acid. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-eight male Wistar rats were divided into five experimental groups: non-ligated (NL, n = 6) group; ligature-only (LO, n = 8) group; ligature + systemic administration of humic acid (20, 80 and 150 mg/kg body weight per day for 15 d respectively) (S-20, S-80 and S-150) groups. 4/0 silk ligatures were placed at the gingival margin of lower first molars of the mandibular quadrant. The animals were killed at the end of 15 d. Changes in alveolar bone levels were clinically measured, using a stereomicroscope (× 25), as the distance from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone crest. Tissues were histopathologically examined to assess the differences of osteoclast numbers, osteoblastic activity and inflammatory cell infiltration among the study groups. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay interleukin (IL)-1ß and IL-10 levels in serum and gingival homogenates were evaluated. RESULTS: At the end of 15 d, the alveolar bone loss was significantly higher in the LO group compared to the NL, S-80 and S-150 groups (p < 0.05). In addition, the alveolar bone loss in the S-80 group was significantly lower than the LO and S-20 groups (p < 0.05). The osteoblastic activity in the S-80 and S-150 groups was significantly higher than the other groups (p < 0.05). The osteoclast number in the LO group was significantly higher than the NL, S-80 and S-150 groups (p < 0.05). Inflammatory cell infiltration was significantly higher in LO and S-20 groups than the other groups (p < 0.05). The highest serum and gingival homogenate IL-10 levels were determined in the S-80 group (p < 0.05). The serum and gingival homogenate IL-1ß levels in the LO group were significantly higher than the other groups (p < 0.05). Both 80 and 150 mg/kg dosages of humic acid significantly reduced the periodontitis-related bone loss and inflammation, but the differences between these two groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Within the limits of this study, it can be suggested that humic acid, when administered systemically as an 80 mg/kg dose, may prevent alveolar bone loss and reduce inflammation in the rat model.

ABSTRACT

AIM: Hydrogen sulphide (H2S), recently considered the third endogenous gaseous transmitter capable of modulating many physiological processes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the morphometric and histopathological changes associated with experimental periodontitis in rats in response to systemic administration of H2S METHODS: Forty-eight Wistar rats were divided into six experimental groups: non-ligated (NL) group; ligature only (LO) group; systemic administration of NaHS (H2S donor drug) alone (NaHS) group (14 µmol/kg body weight per day); and ligature placed and systemic administration of three different doses of NaHS groups (14, 28 and 70 µmol/kg/day) (L-NaHS-14, L-NaHS-28 and L-NaHS-70, respectively). Silk ligatures were placed at the gingival margin of lower first molars. Changes in alveolar bone levels were clinically measured and tissues were histopathologically examined. RESULTS: At the end of 15 days alveolar bone loss significantly higher in the entire ligature (LO and L-NaHS-14, -28 and -70) groups compared to the unligated groups (P<0.05) but there were no statistically significant differences in alveolar bone loss between LO and L-NaHS groups. Osteoclast number was significantly lower in L-NaHS-70 group than those of L-NaHS-14 and L-NaHS-28 groups (P<0.05). The osteoblastic activity of the L-NaHS-14 and -70 groups were significantly higher than those of the other groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggested that NaHS, when administered systemically with three different doses, did not prevent or increase alveolar bone loss in the rat model.

ABSTRACT

Gingival overgrowths can occur due to various factors, such as inflammation, or rarely without a reason and are significant in periodontology. Here, we describe the diagnosis and treatment of a 33-year old female with a papilloma-like atypical enlargement of the gingiva attached to the molar vestibular region of her lower jaw. After the patient's medical history was taken and the clinical examination done, the enlargement was surgically removed with a Nd:YAG laser and evaluated histopathologically. There was an inflamed, oedematous and vascularized stroma with a thick spongy squamous epithelium layer. After six months, there were no problems at the surgical area and recurrence was not observed.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: We aimed to investigate the effect of allograft amniotic membrane utilization to prevent the post-operative adhesion formation. BACKGROUND: In 24 pregnant inbreed Wistar-Albino rats, pregnancy was terminated by forming bilateral uterine horn defect via cesarean section at 20th gestational day. Rats were assigned in three groups randomly. METHODS: In the first group, abdomen closure was achieved without administration of any intra-peritoneal material following standard surgical intervention. In the second group Seprafilm was used to cover the defect at anterior horn of uterus; whereas amniotic membrane of the rat itself was used in the third group. After 3 weeks, all rats were sacrificed and re-laparotomy was performed to determine adhesions scores. RESULTS: No significant difference was found in adhesion scores between the group 1 and group 3 and also between group 2 and group 3, supporting the previous findings in the literature. CONCLUSION: We observed that direct application of allograft amniotic membrane, which is an adhesion barrier used after cesarean section, to injured surface had no effect in the prevention of adhesions (Tab. 3, Fig. 5, Ref. 28).

ABSTRACT

Plasma cellular osteomyelitis is a chronic recurrent, unifocal or multifocal inflammatory disorder, which has an unknown aetiology. The infectious focus or foci may occur in different sites of the skeleton. This unusual clinical entity has been reported in over 200 cases in the relevant literature, but the involvement of the spine with plasma cellular osteomyelitis has not been reported before. Because of the rarity of this disease and the possible difficulty in differentiating plasma cell osteomyelitis, both clinically and histopathologically from the other similar afflictions of the spine, we describe our case.

ABSTRACT

Granuloma annulare occurs as an idiopathic and benign condition, although it may be associated with some neoplasms. We describe a 60-year-old man with granuloma annulare on dorsal hands who developed prostate carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of granuloma annulare with prostate carcinoma. Granuloma annulare, especially in older age groups, may be classified as a sign of various carcinomas.

ABSTRACT

We present 2 cases with Robinow syndrome in a nonconsanguineous Turkish couple. The first case, second living child of the family, has all of the cardinal features of this syndrome including short stature, mesomelic shortening of forearms, frontal bossing, hypertelorism, anteverted nares, triangular mouth, hypoplastic genitalia and vertebral and costal anomalies. The second case was diagnosed with first-trimester ultrasonographic findings such as shortening of extremities and increased nuchal translucency thickness at 12 + 4 weeks of gestation, and the family wished to terminate this pregnancy. After abortion, we obtained findings such as typical face features, shortening of forearms, ambiguous genitalia suggesting Robinow syndrome with autopsy examination.

ABSTRACT

Physeal distraction was applied with an external fixator to the triradiate cartilage of dogs with the aim of increasing the capacity of the acetabulum. The force was continued for from 2 to 6 weeks and the consequent changes were evaluated with regard to function and structure by radiography and microscopy. The distraction, without producing epiphysiolysis and destruction of the cartilage, resulted in expansion of the pelvic bones. The depth and volume of the acetabulum were increased, but the acetabular angle was decreased. Distraction also caused proliferation of the lacunar cells and the number of mammillary processes in the cartilage columns increased. Distraction can therefore be applied to the triradiate cartilage to enlarge the capacity of the acetabulum without producing epiphysiolysis.
