ABSTRACT

Citrus wastewaters (CWWs) are by-products of the citrus fruit transformation process. Currently, more than 700 million of m³ of CWWs per year are produced worldwide. Until nowadays, the management of CWWs is based on a take-make-use-dispose model. Indeed, after being produced within a citrus processing industry, CWWs are subjected to treatment and then discharged into the environment. Now, the European Union is pushing towards a take-make-use-reuse management model, which suggests to provide for the minimization of residual pollutants simultaneously with their exploitation through a biorefinery concept. Indeed, the recovery of energy nutrients and other value-added products held by CWWs may promote environmental sustainability and close the nutrient cycles in line with the circular bio-economy perspective. Unfortunately, knowledge about the benefits and disadvantages of available technologies for the management and valorisation of CWWs are very fragmentary, thus not providing to the scientific community and stakeholders an appropriate approach. Moreover, available studies focus on a specific treatment/valorisation pathway of CWWs and an overall vision is still missing. This review aims to provide an integrated approach for the sustainable management of CWWs to be proposed to company managers and other stakeholders within the legislative boundaries and in line with the circular bio-economy perspective. To this aim, firstly, a concise analysis of citrus wastewater characteristics and the main current regulations on CWWs are reported and discussed. Then, the main technologies with a general comparison of their pros and cons, and alternative pathways for CWWs utilization are presented and discussed. Finally, a focus was paid to the economic feasibility of the solutions proposed to date relating to the recovery of the CWWs for the production of both value-added compounds and agricultural reuse. Based on literature analysis an integrated approach for a sustainable CWWs management is proposed. Such an approach suggests that after chemicals recovery by biorefinery, wastewaters should be directly used for crop irrigation if allowed by regulations or addressed to treatment plant. The latter way should be preferred when CWWs cannot be directly applied to soil due to lack of concomitance between CWWs production and crop needs. In such a way, treated wastewater should be reused after tertiary treatments for crop irrigation, whereas produced sludges should be undergone to dewatering treatment before being reused as organic amendment to improve soil fertility. Finally, this review invite European institutions and each Member State to promote common and specific legislations to overcome the fragmentation of the regulatory framework regarding CWWs reuse.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic COVID 19 has upset the economic, social, financial, and general behavioral systems. Global crisis has a large impact overall and related fallouts significantly affect existent structural paradigms in every country and region across the world. In particular, the spread of COVID-19 pandemic has led to having to rethink the way we produce and consume food. Within this global change, a rise in the number of consumers who purchase food products online in order to comply with the rules aimed at limiting the circulation of the virus should be emphasized. Consequently, probably causing a long-term positive effect on m-commerce. The purpose is to elaborate on the index of the satisfaction level of consumers of purchasing food online via food shopping channels, by using key factors that characterize the online spending behavior. The analysis was carried out by collection of data deriving from an anonymous online questionnaire administrated via social networks and emails, during the 'hot' months of the pandemic progression in Italy, which is March-May 2020. We analyse both dimensions of customer satisfaction (process and outcome), by means of two systems of indicators. We reduce their complexity using synthesis obtained with the Partially ordered set. Results highlight the differences between the two dimensions of customer satisfaction. Online shopping can surely contribute to reduction of food waste thanks to elimination of frenzied shopping routines at supermarkets and can open space to new fields of study. On the other hand, defining an index of the consumer's satisfaction can alter sales strategies of m-commerce managers and entrepreneurs.

In important areas of the agricultural sector, plastic is one of the most important tools for improving the managerial and economic performance of companies. Horticultural production under protected cultivation, in particular, makes abundant use of plastic polymers-polymers that mostly turn into waste. This study aims to identify similar organisational models among farmers operating in the strawberry production sector in relation to their intention to recycle plastic material and which factors characterize these models (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and socio-demographic characteristics) and to quantify the plastic used in relation to the different types of materials used. In order to achieve this aim, data coming from one of Italy's most specialized areas in the strawberry sector, Marsala, were analysed using a principal component analysis to identify latent factor and subsequently clustered in order to identify similar organisational models. The main findings show that behind a typical 250-gram basket of strawberries, the production process has generated more than 20 g of plastic waste, consisting of different polymers. In addition, younger farmers, who manage companies of smaller physical dimensions, and with a higher level of education, show a greater intention to join plastic recycling programs, guided by their attitudes, by the necessity to respond to social pressures, and by the ability to manage recycling programs. Our main result adds to previous knowledge that the informed producer (via greater awareness) is the key to solving the problem through improving environmental sustainability and creating a circular economy.

Recent food crises and uncertainty regarding food quality have pushed consumers towards a growing need to know more about the foods they purchase, including information related to both food quality and production. This paper identifies the main factors affecting consumer interest in receiving information on food irradiation technology. An online survey was used for research purposes and a total of 392 people, living in Italy, were questioned. Findings revealed that 89.2% of Italian consumers are interested in receiving information on the treatment of foods with ionizing radiation aimed at raising product safety. In particular, this interest was greater for respondents who reported a high sensitivity to food safety issues, who had already or who have unwittingly purchased irradiated foods, and those with a higher level of education. The results also underlined that a problem of misinformation exists among Italian consumers regarding irradiation technology, and that specific food education programs in the schools promoted by the ministry of education and promotional campaigns supported by public and private institutions, aimed at creating greater awareness and attitude among consumers about irradiated products, are necessary.

ABSTRACT

Abandonment of agricultural land leads to several consequences for ecosystem functions. Agricultural abandonment may be a significant and low cost strategy for carbon sequestration and mitigation of anthropogenic CO2 emissions due to the vegetation recovery and increase in soil organic matter. The aim of this study was to: (i) estimate the influence of different Soil Regions (areas characterized by a typical climate and parent material association) and Bioclimates (zones with homogeneous climatic regions and thermotype indices) on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics after agricultural land abandonment; and (ii) to analyse the efficiency of the agri-environment policy (agri-environment measures) suggested by the European Commission in relation to potential SOC stock ability in the Sicilian Region (Italy). In order to quantify the effects of agricultural abandonment on SOC, a dataset with original data that was sampled in Sicily and existing data from the literature were analysed according to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodology. Results showed that abandonment of cropland soils increased SOC stock by 9.03MgCha-1 on average, ranging from 5.4MgCha-1 to 26.7MgCha-1 in relation to the Soil Region and Bioclimate. The estimation of SOC change after agricultural use permitted calculation of the payments for ecosystem service (PES) of C sequestration after agricultural land abandonment in relation to environmental benefits, increasing in this way the efficiency of PES. Considering the 14,337ha of abandoned lands in Sicily, the CO2 emission as a whole was reduced by 887,745Mg CO2. Therefore, it could be concluded that abandoned agricultural fields represents a valid opportunity to mitigate agriculture sector emissions in Sicily.
