ABSTRACT

Boxer are predisposed to subaortic (SAS) and pulmonic stenosis (PS). To decrease the prevalence, pre-breeding cardiologic exams were performed in the last years. In our study the results of 309 pre-breeding exams of boxers presented between 1999 and 2008 were evaluated retrospectively. The overall prevalence of heart murmurs was 26.5 %. A SAS was diagnosed in 25 (8.1 %) and a PS in 10 (3.3 %) dogs. A combination of both defects was found in 7 (2.3 %) Boxers. Animals with a heart murmur of at least grade 3/6 had a significantly higher peak aortic flow velocity (VmaxAo) than animals without or only soft heart murmurs. Over the study period both the frequency of heart murmurs and diagnosis of SAS and PS decreased.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Boxers are predisposed to subaortic and pulmonic stenosis (SAS, PS). Screening of puppies may be useful in estimating the risk of their developing a defect that potentially compromises life expectancy or exercise tolerance. HYPOTHESIS: Presence of SAS or PS in adult Boxers can be predicted by auscultation and Doppler echocardiography at 9-10 weeks of age. ANIMALS: Eighty-five Boxer puppies examined at 9-10 weeks of age and at 12 months of age. METHODS: Prospective, longitudinal observational study. Auscultation by stethoscope and continuous wave-Doppler echocardiography for peak velocities (V(max)) in the aorta (Ao) and pulmonary artery (PA). RESULTS: Intensity of heart murmurs in puppies correlated with V(max)Ao and V(max)PA in adults. V(max)Ao and V(max)PA in puppies correlated with V(max)Ao and V(max)PA in adults, respectively. From puppy to adult, V(max)Ao increased and V(max)PA remained unchanged. The negative predictive value for absent or only a soft (< or =II/VI) murmur in puppies being associated with V(max)Ao and PA < or = 2.4 m/s as an adult was 90% and < or =3.5 m/s 100%. The negative predictive value of a V(max)< or = 2.4 m/s as a puppy still being < or =2.4 m/s as an adult was 94% for Ao and 96% for PA, and of a V(max)< or = 3.5 m/s, 99% for Ao and 100% for PA. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Even though V(max)Ao increases during growth in Boxer puppies, indicating relative narrowing of the aorta, puppies with V(max)Ao < or = 2.4 m/s do not usually progress to clinically have relevant SAS at 12 months of age.

ABSTRACT

The therapeutic possibilities in veterinary cardiology have developed rapidly in the past few years. Whereas until recently cardiac intervention in dogs could only be performed by thoracotomy, new minimally invasive techniques are adopted. Procedures like balloondilatation of pulmonic stenosis, coil embolisation of patent ductus arteriosus, pacemaker implantation in symptomatic bradyarrhyhtmia, and palliative balloon pericardiotomy are becoming more and more established. These alternative interventional methods are attractive, because no postsurgical pain and no complications potentially associated with thoracotomy ensue. The knowledge of such new treatment modalities and particularly the indications for an intervention are prerequisites to apply them optimally and broadly.

ABSTRACT

A nine-month-old golden retriever bitch was presented with exercise intolerance and recurrent nasal discharge. Based on clinical, radiographic and ultrasonographic examination, a diagnosis of rhinitis, situs inversus totalis and tricuspid valve insufficiency was established. The results of video- and electron microscopy studies of the respiratory epithelium were compatible with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). However, no evidence of a primary ultrastructural defect of the cilia was found. The dog was euthanased because of the poor prognosis. At necropsy, a hydrocephalus internus and a subaortic stenosis were additionally diagnosed. PCD, in combination with situs inversus, has been previously reported in golden retrievers, but without a concomitant hydrocephalus internus. Furthermore, concomitant occurrence of internal cardiac malformation and PCD has not previously been reported in the dog.

ABSTRACT

5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR) provides in vitro measures of tumor cell proliferation. We used positron emission tomography to study tissue and plasma kinetics of [76Br]BUdR in tumor-bearing animals. In order to account for the slow washout of the major plasma metabolite, [76Br]bromide, a mathematical correction for the distribution volume of [76Br]bromide was applied. However, following correction specific tumor tracer retention was low or even zero and did not correlate with independent measures of proliferation. The kinetic characteristics of [76Br]BUdR make this tracer unsuitable for proliferation imaging.

ABSTRACT

As it was urinating, a six-month-old Swiss braunvieh heifer produced a second stream of urine from a fistula that opened on the ventrolateral margin of the left vulval lip. A catheter was introduced into this opening and passed easily into the bladder. Urethrography showed that the fistula joined the urethra in the mid-pelvic region and that a single canal originated from the bladder. Endoscopy confirmed this finding and also revealed a duplication of the vaginal portion of the cervix, a division of the cranial vagina by a septum and a fibrous band in the region of the hymenal ring. Cytogenetic examination revealed reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 20q23 and 22q23. A diagnosis of urethra duplex, duplication of the vaginal portion of the cervix and reciprocal autosomal translocation between chromosomes 20 and 22 was made on the basis of these findings.

ABSTRACT

For the past 2 years computed tomography is used at the Veterinary School, University of Zürich. This new imaging modality enables the detection of abnormalities occurring in small and large animals which were previously not visible with imaging techniques. Subjects of this study were a foal and a small pony, both with suspected head trauma. Routine radiography could not explain any of the neurological deficiencies. In the first case a basilar skull fracture along with a focal brain hemorrhage was detected, in the second case multiple basilar skull fractures were seen. The computed tomographic examination after intravenous injection of an iodine-containing contrast medium also revealed epidural hemorrhage. These two cases demonstrate the diagnostic use of computed tomography as an extremely valuable asset when diagnosing head trauma in horses.

ABSTRACT

In a 7 year old female poodle an adrenocortical tumor was diagnosed on basis of laboratory and ultrasonographic examinations. One year after adrenalectomy, a relapse was diagnosed, at that time the suspicion of metastases in the liver arose for the first time. By treatment with Mitotane in a dose aiming at completely destroying the adrenal cortex, a complete disappearance of the tumor as well as a dramatic reduction of the size of the metastases could be achieved. 12 months after the begin of the chemotherapy, the dog is in good general condition.

ABSTRACT

Non-surgical occlusion of persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) by catheter guided coil embolisation was performed in two dogs. In both dogs the procedure was performed through the femoral artery. The exact location and the narrowest diameter of the PDA were evaluated angiographically after contrast medium injection into the ascending aorta. Based on shunt diameter measurements of 4 mm in dog no. 1 and 2.4 mm in dog no. 2, a coil of 8 mm diameter was chosen for dog no. 1, and of 5 mm diameter for dog no. 2. The coils were placed within the shunt vessel under fluoroscopic guidance using the Cook delivery-system for detachable PDA coil. The success of the intervention was documented angiographically 10 minutes after coil release. The shunt vessel was completely occluded in dog no. 1, while minimal blood flow was detected in dog no. 2 at that time. The technique of transvascular PDA closure compares favorably with the traditional surgical technique due to minimal invasiveness and hence excellent postinterventional comfort to the patient.

ABSTRACT

Extensive gastric ulceration was diagnosed endoscopically and histologically in a two-year-old cat with haematemesis, anorexia and severe dehydration. Based on history (previous ingestion of leaf pieces of Dieffenbachia) and exclusion of another cause, intoxication with Dieffenbachia was diagnosed. The toxical effect of Dieffenbachia on mucous membranes is probably explained by ejection of calcium oxalate crystals leading to injury of mast cells and a massive histamine release. Supportive treatment including electrolyte infusions, ranitidine, sucralfate, and forced feeding using an endoscopically placed gastrostomy tube resulted in quick clinical recovery of this cat.
