ABSTRACT

Condyloma acuminatum (CA), commonly known as anogenital warts, is a prevalent sexually transmitted disease primarily caused by low risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11. This case report outlines the successful use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat extensive condyloma acuminatum in a young female patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) undergoing immunosuppressive treatment. The patient also had cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade I. Carbon dioxide laser treatment were initially used to remove some surface warts, followed by PDT, resulting in satisfactory outcomes. After seven sessions, the warty growths were successfully removed. Interdisciplinary collaboration, involving rheumatology, gynecology, and dermatology, facilitated comprehensive management. This case highlights the efficacy and safety of PDT in treating condyloma acuminatum and suggests its potential as an alternative treatment for young SLE patients with similar conditions.

ABSTRACT

Verrucae vulgaris are highly contagious keratotic lesions occurring on the skin caused by human papillomavirus. Generally, verrucae vulgaris are harmless to the body, but when they occur in specific areas such as the face or soles of the feet, they can profoundly impact an individual's quality of life and necessitate therapeutic intervention. Although several pharmacological and physical topical treatments are available, the results are often unsatisfactory in terms of efficacy and cosmetic outcome. Verrucae which typically occur widely on the face are usually Verrucae Planae. When Verrucae vulgaris does occur, it usually presents as single or occasional multiple lesions, rather than covering almost the entire face. In immunocompromised situations, verruca vulgaris can exhibit rare proliferative behavior. In this report, we present a 17-year-old male adolescent who was successfully treated for generalized facial verrucae vulgaris by using a combination of curettage and photodynamic therapy (PDT). The patient's prolonged use of topical corticosteroids and tacrolimus ointment on the face for eczema over several years is believed to have led to a localized immunosuppressive state of the facial skin, which is considered a significant factor in the outbreak of verrucae vulgaris. Additionally, the patient has a history of acne and frequently scratched face. The appearance of the Koebner phenomenon following scratching is considered another potential reason. This treatment achieved complete resolution and improved the patient's pre-existing acne problem, resulting in a satisfactory cosmetic outcome without any notable adverse effects or recurrence during the follow-up period. This highlighted that pre-treatment with curettage before PDT enhanced the efficiency of verrucae vulgaris treatment and reduced the cost.

ABSTRACT

Background: Gut microbiota has been associated with dermatological problems in earlier observational studies. However, it is unclear whether gut microbiota has a causal function in dermatological diseases. Methods: Thirteen dermatological diseases were the subject of bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) research aimed at identifying potential causal links between gut microbiota and these diseases. Summary statistics for the Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) of gut microbiota and dermatological diseases were obtained from public datasets. With the goal of evaluating the causal estimates, five acknowledged MR approaches were utilized along with multiple testing corrections, with inverse variance weighted (IVW) regression serving as the main methodology. Regarding the taxa that were causally linked with dermatological diseases in the forward MR analysis, reverse MR was performed. A series of sensitivity analyses were conducted to test the robustness of the causal estimates. Results: The combined results of the five MR methods and sensitivity analysis showed 94 suggestive and five significant causal relationships. In particular, the genus Eubacterium_fissicatena_group increased the risk of developing psoriasis vulgaris (odds ratio [OR] = 1.32, pFDR = 4.36 × 10-3), family Bacteroidaceae (OR = 2.25, pFDR = 4.39 × 10-3), genus Allisonella (OR = 1.42, pFDR = 1.29 × 10-2), and genus Bacteroides (OR = 2.25, pFDR = 1.29 × 10-2) increased the risk of developing acne; and the genus Intestinibacter increased the risk of urticaria (OR = 1.30, pFDR = 9.13 × 10-3). A reverse MR study revealed insufficient evidence for a significant causal relationship. In addition, there was no discernible horizontal pleiotropy or heterogeneity. Conclusion: This study provides novel insights into the causality of gut microbiota in dermatological diseases and therapeutic or preventive paradigms for cutaneous conditions.

ABSTRACT

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive, effective treatment for superficial skin conditions, offering superior cosmetic outcomes compared with traditional therapies. Bowen's disease (BD) of the nipple-areola complex (NAC) is rare and thus, lacks a standardized treatment approach. This report details the case of a 48-year-old woman who was successfully treated for BD of the NAC using PDT. Over a follow-up period of 30 months, there was no evidence of disease recurrence, underscoring the potential of PDT as a viable treatment option for this rare manifestation of BD.

ABSTRACT

The efficacies and safety of oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) remains controversial, and long-term clinical efficacies in particular need to be explored. This study is designed accordingly, therefore, we searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, OVID, and SinoMed for literature, regardless of publication date or language. Taking 12 months after operation as the shortest limit, the outcome measures were extracted, including visual analog scale (VAS), Oswetry dysfunction index (ODI), Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, intervertebral disk height (IDH), foraminal height (FH), lumbar lordosis (LL), segment lordosis (SL), slip ratio, and incidence of surgical complications. Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.4 and Stata 16.0, and results were expressed with MD and 95% CI, and two-sided p-values with p < 0.05 being statistically significant. In total, 17 clinical studies (n = 689 patients) were screened, with an average patient age of 63.4 years. Our study revealed that VAS decreased by 4.55 (low back pain) and 5.46 (leg pain) points, respectively. And ODI score decreased by an average of 33.82% while JOA score increased by an average of 11.56 points. In terms of imaging indicators, mean IDH and FH increased by 4.18 and 4.91 mm, mean LL and SL improved by 9.22° and 2.46°, respectively. Besides, mean slip ratio decreased by 10.45%. The incidence of complications was statistically analyzed in 18 studies, with a rate of 4%-54% and an overall incidence of 19%. To sum up, our study was the first to focus on the long-term efficacies of OLIF treatment for DLS, and to provide further clinical evidence. However, long-term follow-up multicenter randomized controlled trials are still needed for further evaluation.
