ABSTRACT

To understand how food resource use and partitioning by closely related species allows local coexistence, it is key to determine whether a species' diet reflects food availability or food preferences. Here, we analysed the diets, seed selection, and seed preferences of three closely related harvester ants: Messor barbarus, M. bouvieri, and M. capitatus. Sympatric within a Mediterranean shrubland, these species differ in foraging behaviour and worker polymorphism. For 2 years, we studied the ants' diets and seed selection patterns as well as the local availability of seeds. Additionally, we performed a seed-choice experiment using a paired comparison design, offering the ants seeds from eight native plant species. The three ant species had the same general diet, which was primarily granivorous. Although they all consumed a wide variety of seeds, they mostly selected seeds from a small subset of plant species. Despite their morphological and behavioural differences, the ants displayed similar seed preferences that were highly consistent with their diets and seed selection patterns. Our results support the idea that the trophic ecology of these three harvester ants is driven by similar seed preferences rather than by their morphological and behavioural differences. Seed diversity and abundance were high near the ants' nests, suggesting that seed availability is not limiting and could in fact favour local species coexistence.

ABSTRACT

Amylomyces rouxii is a zygomycete that produces extracellular protease and tyrosinase. The tyrosinase activity is negatively regulated by the proteases and, which attempts to purify the tyrosinase (tyr) enzyme that has been hampered by the presence of a protease that co-purified with it. In this work we identified genes encoding aspartic protease II (aspII) and VI of A. rouxii. Using an RNAi strategy based on the generation of a siRNA by transcription from two opposite-orientated promoters, the expression of these two proteases was silenced, showing that this molecular tool is suitable for gene silencing in Amylomyces. The transformant strains showed a significant attenuation of the transcripts (determined by RT-qPCR), with respective inhibition of the protease activity. In the case of aspII, inhibition was in the range of 43-90 % in different transformants, which correlated well with up to a five-fold increase in tyr activity with respect to the wild type and control strains. In contrast, silencing of aspVI caused a 43-65 % decrease in protease activity but had no significant effect on the tyr activity. The results show that aspII has a negative effect on tyr activity, and that the silencing of this protease is important to obtain strains with high levels of tyr activity.

ABSTRACT

A wide variety of biological functions, including those involved in the morphogenesis process of basidiomycete fungi, have been attributed to laccase enzymes. In this work, RNA interference (RNAi) was used to evaluate the role of the laccase (lacc2) gene of Pleurotus ostreatus PoB. Previously, transformant strains of P. ostreatus were obtained and according to their level of silencing they were classified as light (T7), medium (T21) or severe (T26 and T27). The attenuation of the lacc2 gene in these transformants was determined by RT-PCR. Silencing of lacc2 resulted in a decrease in laccase activity between 30 and 55%, which depended on the level of laccase expression achieved. The silenced strains (T21, T26, and T27) displayed a delay in the development of mycelium on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium, whereas in the cultures grown on wheat straw, we found that these strains were incapable of producing aerial mycelium, primordia, and fruiting bodies. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the presence of toxocyst-like structures. The highest abundance of these structures was observed in the wild-type (PoB) and T7 strains. However, the abundance of toxocysts decreased in the T21 and T26 strains, and in T27 they were not detected. These results suggest that the presence and abundance of toxocyst-like structures are directly related to the development of fruiting bodies. Furthermore, our data confirm that lacc2 is involved in the morphogenesis process of P. ostreatus.

Laccases are valuable enzymes as an excellent ecological alternative for bioremediation issues because they can oxidize persistent xenobiotic compounds. The production and characterization of extracellular laccases from saprotrophic fungi from disturbed environments have been scarcely explored, even though this could diversify their functional characteristics and expand the conditions in which they carry out their catalysis. Agrocybe pediades, isolated from a disturbed forest, produces an extracellular laccase in liquid culture. The enzyme was purified, identified and characterized. Copper and hexachlorobenzene do not function as inducers for the laccase produced. Partial amino acid sequences were obtained by LC-MS/MS that share similarity with laccases from other fungi. Purified laccase is a monomer with a molecular mass between 55-60 kDa and had an optimum activity at pH 5.0 and the optimum temperature at 45 °C using 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (2,6-DMP) as substrate. The Km and Vmax also determined with 2,6-DMP were 100 µM and 285 µmol∙min-1∙mg-1, respectively, showing that the laccase of A. pediades has a higher affinity for this substrate than that of other Agaricales. These features could provide a potential catalyst for different toxic substrates and in the future laccase could be used in environmental recovery processes.

Introducción: la adherencia al tratamiento no farmacológico de la diabetes mellitus es un factor clave para evitar o retrasar las complicaciones de esta enfermedad. El cumplimento terapéutico depende de múltiples factores. Objetivo: evaluar la adherencia al tratamiento higiénico dietético en pacientes con diabetes mellitus, sobre todo la nutricional y la actividad física. Se midieron además las variables demográficas y presencia de hipertensión arterial. Metodología: se realizó una entrevista a pacientes adultos de ambos sexos, portadores de diabetes mellitus, que residen en el barrio Sajonia de Asunción, Paraguay, entre mayo y octubre del 2022. Se midieron variables demográficas y clínicas. La adherencia se determinó con el cuestionario de Caro Bautista que consta de 7 preguntas que evalúan las prácticas terapéuticas de los pacientes en la última semana. El estudio contó con la aprobación del Comité de ética de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Privada del Este, Paraguay. Resultados: fueron entrevistados 257 personas con el diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus, con predominio del sexo femenino (61,4%), 73,9% refería tener ingresos propios y 49% padecía también de hipertensión arterial. El cuestionario detectó que 20,1% seguía una dieta saludable toda la semana, 15,5% realizaba ejercicios físicos diariamente y 14,3% realizaba los monitoreos de sangre capilar regularmente. Conclusión: entre 10 y 22% de los pacientes con diabetes mellitus realiza dieta y ejercicios adecuados, así como monitoreo de la glucemia según las recomendaciones de sus médicos.


Introduction: Adherence to non-pharmacological treatment of diabetes mellitus is a key factor in avoiding or delaying the complications of this disease. Treatment compliance depends on multiple factors. Objective: To evaluate adherence to dietary hygienic treatment in patients with diabetes mellitus, especially nutrition and physical activity. Demographic variables and the presence of arterial hypertension were also measured. Methodology: An interview was conducted with adult male and female patients, carriers of diabetes mellitus, residing in the Sajonia neighborhood of Asunción, Paraguay, between May and October 2022. Demographic and clinical variables were measured. Adherence was determined with the Caro Bautista questionnaire, which consists of seven questions that evaluate the therapeutic practices of patients in the last week. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Privada del Este, Paraguay. Results: Two hundred fifty-seven people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus were interviewed, with a predominance of females (61.4%), 73.9% reported having their own income and 49% also suffered from arterial hypertension. The questionnaire detected that 20.1% followed a healthy diet all week, 15.5% performed daily physical exercises, and 14.3% performed capillary blood monitoring regularly. Conclusion: Between 10 and 22% of patients with diabetes mellitus perform adequate diet and exercise, as well as glycemia monitoring according to the recommendations of their physicians.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The inadequacy of resistance monitoring in Latin America leads to circulation of HIV strains with drug resistance mutations (DRMs), compromising ART effectiveness. This study describes the DRM prevalence in HIV-infected paediatric patients in Panama. METHODS: During 2018-19, plasma was collected from 76 HIV-infected children/adolescents (5 ART-naive, 71 treated) in Panama for HIV-1 DRM pol analysis, predicted antiretroviral (ARV) susceptibility by Stanford, and HIV-1 variant phylogenetic characterization. RESULTS: HIV-1 pol sequences were recovered from 67 (88.2%) of 76 children/adolescents (median age 12 years), carrying 65 subtype B, 1 subtype G and 1 unique recombinant URF_A1B. Five were ART-naive and 62 ART-treated under virological failure (viraemia >50 copies/mL) with previous exposure to NRTIs, (100%), NNRTIs (45.2%), PIs (95.2%) and integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs, 17.7%). Among the treated patients, 34 (54.8%) carried resistant strains, with major DRMs to one (40.3%), two (9.7%) or three (4.8%) ARV families. Most of them harboured DRMs to NRTIs (58.5%) or NNRTIs (39%), but also major DRMs to PIs (4.9%) and INSTIs (6.5%). We also found dual-class NRTI + NNRTI (12.2%) and NNRTI + PI (2.6%) resistance. Two naive subjects carried viruses with DRMs to NRTIs and NRTI + NNRTI, respectively. Sequenced viruses presented high/intermediate resistance mainly to emtricitabine/lamivudine (48.9% each) and efavirenz/nevirapine (33.3% each). Most participants were susceptible to PIs (91.3%) and INSTIs (88.1%). CONCLUSIONS: The high DRM prevalence to NRTIs and NNRTIs observed among treated HIV-infected children/adolescents in Panama justifies the need for routine resistance monitoring for optimal rescue therapy selection in this vulnerable population.

Abstract Introduction: "Ant gardens'' are ant nests located at different heights on trees on which vascular epiphytic plants that have been transported and sown by ants have germinated. Although this mutualistic relationship has been studied in humid tropical ecosystems, information on other tropical and Colombian ecosystems is scarce. Objective: To characterize the distribution, building, diversity, demography and phenology of ant gardens in dry tropical forest. Methods: In January and February, 2018, we identified 170 ant gardens on a 100x5 m transect on the banks of the Quesada River, Colombia, and in adjacent secondary dry premontane transitional forest; we monitored changes, for gardens and plants, in 28 of them, every two weeks (March 2018-February 2019). Results: The gardens, built by Azteca ulei, were aggregated near water bodies; had 10 species of epiphytes and were on 13 tree species. Larger gardens had more epiphyte species. Some epiphytes had a bimodal phenological pattern. Less seedlings become established in the dry season, and less adults remain in the gardens. Garden characteristics benefit both epiphytes and ants. Conclusions: The gardens built by A. ulei have ecological characteristics that favor the germination, establishment, and reproduction of diverse epiphytes in this dry tropical ecosystem, including aggregation near water flows.


Resumen Introducción: Los "jardines de hormigas'' son nidos de hormigas en árboles, que se localizan a diferentes alturas, sobre los que germinan plantas epífitas vasculares que han sido transportadas y sembradas previamente por hormigas. Aunque esta relación mutualista ha sido estudiada en ecosistemas húmedos tropicales, la información en otros ecosistemas tropicales y en Colombia, es escasa. Objetivo: Caracterizar la distribución, construcción, diversidad, demografía y fenología de los hormigueros en bosque tropical seco. Métodos: En enero y febrero de 2018, identificamos 170 hormigueros en un transecto de 100x5 m a orillas del río Quesada, Colombia, y en el bosque secundario premontano seco de transición adyacente; monitoreamos cambios, para jardines y plantas, en 28 de ellos, cada dos semanas (marzo 2018-febrero 2019). Resultados: Los jardines, construidos por Azteca ulei, se agregaron cerca de cuerpos de agua; tenían 10 especies de epífitas y estaban sobre 13 especies arbóreas. Los jardines más grandes tenían más especies epífitas. Algunas epífitas tuvieron un patrón fenológico bimodal. Se establecen menos plántulas en la estación seca y quedan menos adultos en los jardines. Las características del jardín benefician tanto a las epífitas como a las hormigas. Conclusiones: Los jardines construidos por A. ulei tienen características ecológicas que favorecen la germinación, establecimiento y reproducción de diversas epífitas en este ecosistema tropical seco, incluyendo la agregación cerca de cursos de agua.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been proposed as the foremost risk factor for the development of gastric cancer. We found that H. pylori express the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (HpG6PD), which participates in glucose metabolism via the pentose phosphate pathway. Thus, we hypothesized that if the biochemical and physicochemical characteristics of HpG6PD contrast with the host G6PD (human G6PD, HsG6PD), HpG6PD becomes a potential target for novel drugs against H. pylori. In this work, we characterized the biochemical properties of the HpG6PD from the H.pylori strain 29CaP and expressed the active recombinant protein, to analyze its steady-state kinetics, thermostability, and biophysical aspects. In addition, we analyzed the HpG6PD in silico structural properties to compare them with those of the HsG6PD. The optimal pH for enzyme activity was 7.5, with a T1/2 of 46.6 °C, at an optimum stability temperature of 37 °C. The apparent Km values calculated for G6P and NADP+ were 75.0 and 12.8 µM, respectively. G6P does not protect HpG6PD from trypsin digestion, but NADP+ does protect the enzyme from trypsin and guanidine hydrochloride (Gdn-HCl). The biochemical characterization of HpG6PD contributes to knowledge regarding H. pylori metabolism and opens up the possibility of using this enzyme as a potential target for specific and efficient treatment against this pathogen; structural alignment indicates that the three-dimensional (3D) homodimer model of the G6PD protein from H. pylori is different from the 3D G6PD of Homo sapiens.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk of Fasciola hepatica infection in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) during peripartum in southeastern Mexico. An observational study was designed, in which 94 pregnant buffalo cows near calving and naturally exposed to F. hepatica were included. Farm visits were made on days 60, 30, 15 prepartum, at calving, and on days 15 and 30 postpartum. Feces were obtained from all animals to confirm the presence of F. hepatica eggs. A group of 49 animals was randomly treated twice at day 60 prepartum and at calving with nitroxynil and the other group (n = 45) was kept untreated. Buffaloes would be treated once presenting a positive coproparasitological diagnosis up to 30 days postpartum. F. hepatica was detected in 5.3% of the buffaloes (5/94) with a prevalence between 1.7 and 12%. It was observed that treated buffaloes had a lower risk (4.08%) of being positive than untreated buffaloes (6.67%) (P > 0.05). It was also found that untreated animals had 1.6 times more risk of being positive than treated buffaloes. This paper presents the first report of F. hepatica in water buffaloes in Mexico, demonstrating that the two preventive treatments reduced F. hepatica egg shedding during parturition. These findings highlight the need for monitoring for F. hepatica even in unreported/silent potential disease areas.

ABSTRACT

El presente trabajo muestra algunos de los resultados que han derivado del estudio de investigación realizado en la tesis doctoral "Pedagogía de la Posibilidad. Estudio narrativo sobre el proceso educativo y resiliente de dos personas diagnosticadas de Síndrome de Asperger". Desde el enfoque de la investigación biográfica narrativa y a partir del análisis de los relatos de vida de Isabel y Emmit, nos acercamos a sus respectivas experiencias deportivas intra y extraescolares. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las potencialidades y debilidades de estas prácticas como vehículo de socialización. Sus narraciones nos trasladan a escenarios escolares en los que la Educación Física ha estado limitada a ciertos deportes de equipo y a actividades deportivas que no han estado adaptadas a sus necesidades motoras y/o hipersensoriales, y a actividades deportivas extraescolares que, en cierta medida, han potenciado el desarrollo de un proceso resiliente. Sus relatos muestran escenarios deportivos que, bien por limitaciones formativas o desinterés del profesorado, no se han adaptado a sus necesidades deportivas y sociales.

Seus relatos mostram cenários desportivos que por limitações formativas ou desinteresse dos professores não estão adaptados as suas necessidades pessoais e sociais.


This work shows some of the results of a study conducted for the doctoral thesis Pedagogía de la Posibilidad. Estudio narrativo sobre el proceso educativo y resiliente de dos personas diagnosticadas de Síndrome de Asperger. We approach Isabel's and Emmit's in-school and after-school sports experiences from the perspective of biographical narrative research and the analysis of their life stories. The objective of this work is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these practices as vehicles for social integration. Their stories take us to school settings in which Physical Education has been limited to certain team sports and sports activities that have not been adapted to their motor and/or hyper sensory needs or to extracurricular sports activities that have somehow enhanced the development of a resilience process. Their stories show sports scenarios that - either because of training limitations or for lack of teachers' interest - have not been adapted to their sporting and social needs.

Triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) is a glycolysis enzyme, which catalyzes the reversible isomerization between dihydroxyactetone-3-phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (GAP). In pathogenic organisms, TPI is essential to obtain the energy used to survive and infect. Fusarium oxisporum (Fox) is a fungus of biotechnological importance due to its pathogenicity in different organisms, that is why the relevance of also biochemically analyzing its TPI, being the first report of its kind in a Fusarium. Moreover, the kinetic characteristics or structural determinants related to its function remain unknown. Here, the Tpi gene from F. oxysporum was isolated, cloned, and overexpressed. The recombinant protein named FoxTPI was purified (97% purity) showing a molecular mass of 27 kDa, with optimal activity at pH 8.0 and and temperature of 37 °C. The values obtained for Km and Vmax using the substrate GAP were 0.47 ± 0.1 mM, and 5331 µmol min-1 mg-1, respectively. Furthemore, a protein structural modeling showed that FoxTPI has the classical topology of TPIs conserved in other organisms, including the catalytic residues conserved in the active site (Lys12, His94 and Glu164). Finally, when FoxTPI was analyzed with inhibitors, it was found that one of them inhibits its activity, which gives us the perspective of future studies and its potential use against this pathogen.

ABSTRACT

Giardia lambia is a flagellated protozoan parasite that lives in the small intestine and is the causal agent of giardiasis. It has been reported that G. lamblia exhibits glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), the first enzyme in the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). Our group work demonstrated that the g6pd and 6pgl genes are present in the open frame that gives rise to the fused G6PD::6PGL protein; where the G6PD region is similar to the 3D structure of G6PD in Homo sapiens. The objective of the present work was to show the presence of the structural NADP+ binding site on the fused G6PD::6PGL protein and evaluate the effect of the NADP+ molecule on protein stability using biochemical and computational analysis. A protective effect was observed on the thermal inactivation, thermal stability, and trypsin digestions assays when the protein was incubated with NADP+. By molecular docking, we determined the possible structural-NADP+ binding site, which is located between the Rossmann fold of G6PD and 6PGL. Finally, molecular dynamic (MD) simulation was used to test the stability of this complex; it was determined that the presence of both NADP+ structural and cofactor increased the stability of the enzyme, which is in agreement with our experimental results.

Abstract Seed germination and seed longevity under different environmental conditions are fundamental to understand the ecological dynamics of a species, since they are decisive for its success within the ecosystem. Taking this into account, seed germination and seed storage behavior of a pioneer species of tropical dry forest (Tecoma stans) were studied in the laboratory, to establish the effect of different environmental conditions on a local tree population. Two seed lots collected in July 2011, from Cali (Colombia), were evaluated under three alternating temperatures (20/30, 20/25, 25/30 ºC; 16/8 h) and four light qualities (12-hour white light photoperiod, darkness, and 15 minutes of red light -R and far red light -FR). Final germination was recorded for all treatments; for white light treatment the daily germination was recorded to calculate mean germination rate, mean germination time, and two synchronization indices. To assess the effect of light quality on physiological variables, a destructive germination test was carried out. For this test, another seed lot was evaluated under the same light conditions using an alternating temperature of 20/30 °C - 16/8 h, recording germination during six days for every treatment. In addition, seeds were stored at two different moisture contents (7.7, 4.1 %) and three storage temperatures (20, 5, -20 ºC), during two time periods (one and three months); a seed germination test was conducted for each treatment. Four replicates of 35 seeds per treatment were used for all experiments. Germination was high (GP > 90 %) with all alternating temperatures under white light, whereas under R, FR, and darkness germination was evenly successful at low temperatures, but at higher temperature, half of the seeds entered into secondary dormancy (GP= 45-65 %). However, mean germination rate and synchronization under R and FR decreased significantly in comparison to white light treatment and, consequently, mean germination time increased. Seed storage behavior of this species is orthodox due to the high germination (GP > 90 %) obtained under all treatments. In conclusion, T. stans seeds have a negative germination response at high incubation temperatures in the absence of white light, entering into a secondary dormancy. In contrast, an environment with a lower temperature and without white light delays the germination, but at the end seeds are able to reach the same germination values. This seed dependence on incident light in limiting conditions suggests a physiological mechanism on the seed tissues of this species, probably mediated by phytochromes. Finally, the orthodox seed storage behavior of T. stans is a reason to include this species in ex situ seed conservation programs for restoration and recovery of the tropical dry forest; however, long-term studies should be conducted in order to evaluate the maintenance of this characteristic throughout longer periods of time. Resumen La germinación y la longevidad de las semillas de una especie bajo diferentes condiciones ambientales son fundamentales para las dinámicas ecológicas de una especie, debido a que son decisivas en el éxito de la misma en un ecosistema. Teniendo en cuenta esto, se estudió la germinación y el comportamiento en el almacenamiento de las semillas de una especie pionera de bosque seco tropical (Tecoma stans) a nivel de laboratorio, para establecer el efecto de diferentes condiciones ambientales en una población local de árboles. Dos lotes de semillas recolectados en julio 2011, de Cali (Colombia), se evaluaron a tres temperaturas alternadas (20 / 30, 20 / 25, 25 / 30 °C; 16 / 8 h) y cuatro calidades de luz (fotoperiodo de 12 horas de luz blanca, oscuridad, y 15 minutos de luz roja -R y roja lejana -RL). Se registró la germinación final para todos los tratamientos; para el tratamiento de luz blanca se registró la germinación diaria para calcular la tasa media de germinación, el tiempo medio de germinación y dos índices de sincronización. Para evaluar el efecto de la calidad de luz sobre las variables fisiológicas, se realizó una prueba de germinación destructiva. Para esta prueba, otro lote de semillas fue puesto a las mismas condiciones de luz usando una temperatura alternada de 20 / 30 °C - 16 / 8 h, registrando la germinación durante seis días para cada tratamiento. Además, se almacenaron semillas a dos contenidos de humedad (7.7, 4.1 %) y a tres temperaturas de almacenamiento (20, 5, -20 °C), durante dos periodos de tiempo (uno y tres meses); se realizó una prueba de germinación a cada tratamiento. Cuatro repeticiones de 35 semillas por cada tratamiento se usaron en cada experimento. La germinación fue alta (PG > 90 %) en todas las temperaturas alternadas con luz blanca, mientras que en los tratamientos de luz R, RL y en oscuridad, la germinación fue igualmente exitosa a bajas temperaturas, pero a temperaturas más altas la mitad de las semillas entraron en latencia secundaria (PG= 45-65 %). Sin embargo, la tasa media de germinación y la sincronización en R y RL disminuyeron significativamente en comparación con el tratamiento de luz blanca y consecuentemente el tiempo medio de germinación aumentó. El comportamiento de las semillas de T. stans en el almacenamiento es ortodoxo debido a la alta germinación obtenida (PG > 90 %) en todos los tratamientos. En conclusión, las semillas de T. stans tienen una respuesta germinativa negativa a temperaturas de incubación alta en ausencia de luz blanca, donde entran a latencia secundaria. En contraste, un ambiente con baja temperatura y sin luz blanca retrasa la germinación, pero al final las semillas son capaces de alcanzar los mismos valores de germinación. Esta dependencia de las semillas a la luz incidente en condiciones limitantes sugiere la presencia de un mecanismo fisiológico en los tejidos de esta especie, probablemente mediado por fitocromos. Finalmente, el comportamiento ortodoxo de las semillas de T. stans en el almacenamiento abre la posibilidad de incluirla en programas de conservación ex situ para la restauración y recuperación del bosque seco tropical; no obstante, se deben llevarse a cabo pruebas más largas para evaluar el mantenimiento de esta característica por periodos de tiempo más largos.

Introducción: la escala de calidad de vida para el ictus, puede ofrecer una información más detallada y completa de la recuperación del paciente, además de una evaluación con mayor significado desde la perspectiva de este. Objetivo: determinar la calidad de vida de los pacientes con ictus isquémico, a los seis meses de su egreso. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal, en 123 pacientes con diagnóstico clínico y/o imagenológico de un primer ictus isquémico, admitidos en la unidad de ictus del Hospital General Universitario Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima, en el período comprendido entre 1ro de noviembre del 2015 y el 31 de octubre del 2016. Las variables analizadas fueron: demográficas (edad, sexo, procedencia y vínculo laboral), relacionadas con el evento (tipo de infarto cerebral y tratamiento rehabilitador). Se realizó procedimiento descriptivo mediante medidas de tendencia central y porcentajes. Resultados: predominó el sexo masculino con una edad promedio de 69,29 años. El 84,6 % de los pacientes recibió tratamiento rehabilitador, los que presentaron una menor puntuación de la media de la escala de calidad de vida para el ictus. De los 31 pacientes con vínculo laboral, 27 lograron la reincorporación laboral, con una puntuación media de 12,07 en dicha escala. El 53,6 % de ellos presentó afectación leve de la calidad de vida y solo el 4,9 % clasificó como afectación grave. Conclusiones: predominaron los pacientes con afectación leve de la calidad de vida. Las esferas más afectadas fueron: las emociones, el funcionamiento socio-familiar y la cognición.


Introduction: the quality scale of life for stroke may offer a more detailed information and on the total recovery of the patient, besides a more significant evaluation from his perspective. Objective: to determine the quality of life of the patients with ischemic stroke six months after their discharge. Methods: a cross descriptive study was developed in 123 patients with the clinical and/or imaging diagnosis of a first ischemic stroke, admitted in the stroke unit at the University General Hospital Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Cienfuegos, in the period between November 1st 2015 and October 31st 2016. The variables analyzed were: demographic (age, sex, origin, and labor relationship), related with the event (type of brain infarction and rehabilitation treatment). The descriptive procedure was done through central measure trends and percentages. Results: the male sex predominated with an average age of 69,29 years. The 84,6 % of the patients received rehabilitation treatment, those presenting a lower punctuation from the scale media of the quality of life for stroke. From the 31 patients with labor relationship 27 could return to work with an average punctuation of 12,07 in that scale. The 53,6 % from presented mild involvement of the quality of life and only and only 4,9 % classified as a severe involvement. Conclusion: mild involvement of quality of life predominated. The most affected areas were: emotions, socio-familiar functioning and cognition.

El vólvulo de la vesícula biliar es una enfermedad rara y poco frecuente de difícil diagnóstico de manera preoperatoria, ya que las manifestaciones clínicas son atribuidas a otras enfermedades. Se presenta un caso de una paciente femenina de 84años de edad que ingresó en el servicio de cirugía general con un cuadro de dolor abdominal a tipo cólico en hipocondrio derecho acompañado de náusea y vómitos con restos de alimentos. Se realizó examen físico y se indicó ultrasonido abdominal. Se interpretó como una colecistitis aguda litiásica. Se impuso un tratamiento con ceftriaxone. Dado su evolución no desfavorable, cinco días después de su ingreso se realizó la colecistectomía donde se encuentra órgano volvulado. La biopsia confirma colecistitis aguda gangrenada. La paciente evolucionó satisfactoriamente. Tres días posteriores a la cirugía egresó de la institución(AU)


Gallbladder volvulus is a rare and infrequent disease difficult to diagnose preoperatively, as clinical manifestations are attributed to other diseases. A case is presented of an 84-year-old female patient who entered the general surgery service with abdominal colicky pain to the right hypochondrium accompanied by nausea and vomiting with food remains. A physical examination was performed and abdominal ultrasound was indicated. It was interpreted as acute lithiasic cholecystitis. Ceftriaxone was prescribed. Given the unfavorable evolution five days after admission, the cholecystectomy was performed, where the volvulus was found. The biopsy confirms acute gangrenous cholecystitis. The patient evolved satisfactorily. Three days after the surgery he was discharged from the institution(AU)

Therefore, the organisms that depend on them as a food source, tend to show a certain degree of specialization. This way, understanding the factors that influence the dynamics of seed dispersal is important for the regeneration and conservation of tropical ecosystems. Our aim was to determine variation in consumption of Piper tuberculatum by fruit bat assemblages in the village of Robles (Jamundí, Valle del Cauca, Colombia). P. tuberculatum is a resource used not only by wildlife but also by people in the village of Robles. Bats were captured in mist nets between June and November 2014, their feces were collected, and the length of the forearm, wing area, leg length and mass were recorded. At the Universidad del Valle seed laboratory, fecal samples were washed, and their content determined. Of the 14 species captured, Sturnira lilium, Carollia brevicauda, Carollia perspicillata and Artibeus lituratus showed signs of having consumed P. tuberculatum.Sturnira lilium was the main consumer of P. tuberculatum fruits, with the greatest number of consumption events of fruit from this plant species, whereas the other bats showed more diversified consumption events. The greatest niche overlap was recorded between C. brevicauda and C. perspicillata, species that showed similar sizes (i.e., wing area and forearm length) followed by S. lilium and C. perspicillata. In contrast, A. lituratus showed the least niche overlap with the other three fruit bats captured. In conclusion, Sturnira lilium showed an interaction Sturnira-Piper, which is the result of low Solanum availability, and this bat species was the largest consumer of P. tuberculatum in the region. ResumenLa coexistencia de las especies de un gremio trófico depende de la división y el uso de recursos. Los frutos en cualquier ecosistema son recursos alimenticios que varían en el tiempo y el espacio, así como en su contenido nutricional, por ende, los organismos que dependen de éstos como fuente alimenticia, tienden a presentar cierto grado de especialización. La comprensión de los factores que influyen en la dinámica de la dispersión de semillas es importante para la regeneración y conservación de los ecosistemas tropicales. Nuestro objetivo fue determinar cómo varía el consumo de Piper tuberculatum (Pipilongo) por parte del ensamblaje de murciélagos frugívoros en el corregimiento de Robles (Jamundí, Valle del Cauca, Colombia). P. tuberculatum es un recurso utilizado no solo por la fauna, sino también por los habitantes del corregimiento de Robles. Se capturaron murciélagos en redes de niebla entre junio y noviembre 2014, sus heces fueron recolectadas y medidas de la longitud del antebrazo, área alar, longitud de la pata y el peso fueron registradas. En el laboratorio de semillas de la Universidad del Valle, se lavaron las muestras y se determinó su contenido. Las especies Sturnira lilium, Carollia brevicauda, C. perspicillata, y Artibeus lituratus mostraron evidencia de consumo de frutos de P. tuberculatum, entre las 14 especies de murciélagos frugívoros capturadas. Entre ellas, S. lilium fue la principal consumidora de P. tuberculatum, con el mayor número de eventos de consumo de esta especie, mientras que las otras especies de murciélagos tuvieron eventos de consumo más diversos. El mayor traslape de nicho se registró entre las especies C. brevicauda y C. perspicillata, los cuales presentaron un tamaño similar (i.e., área alar, antebrazo), seguido de S. lilium y C. perspicillata. En contraste, el menor traslape de nicho se registró para A. lituratus con cada una de las otras tres especies de murciélagos frugívoras registradas. En conclusión, Sturnira lilium mostró una relación Sturnira-Piper, la cual es el resultado de la baja disponibilidad de Solanum, siendo ésta especie de murciélago el mayor consumidor de P. tuberculatum de la región.

The ecological restoration strategies for highly threatened ecosystems such as the tropical dry forest, depend on the knowledge of limiting factors of biological processes for the different species. Some of these include aspects such as germination and seed longevity of typical species present in those forests. In this study, we evaluated the effect of light and temperature on seed germination of two Fabaceae (Samanea saman and Jacaranda caucana) and two Bignoniaceae (Pithecellobium dulce and Tabebuia rosea) species having potential use in restoration, and we analyzed the seed storage behavior of these species for a three months period. To study the light effect, four levels of light quality on seeds were used (photoperiod of 12 hours of white light, darkness and light enriched in red and far-red, both for an hour each day), and we combined them with three levels of alternated temperatures (20/25, 20/30 and 25/30*C-16/8h). For the storage behavior, two levels of seed moisture content particular for each species were used (low: 3.5-6.1% and high: 8.3-13.8%), with three storage temperatures (20, 5 and -20 degrees C) and two storage times (one and three months). The criterion for germination was radicle emergence which was measured in four replicates per treatment, and was expressed as percentage of germination (PG). There were significant differences in germination of Samanea saman and Jacaranda caucana among light and temperature treatments, with the lowest value in darkness treatments, whereas germination of Pithecellobium dulce and Tabebuia rosea did not differ between treatments (PG>90%). The most suitable temperature regime to promote germination in all species was 25/30 degrees C. These four species showed an orthodox seed storage behavior. We concluded that seeds of R dulce, J. caucana and T. rosea did not have an apparent influence of all light conditions tested in their germination response, which might confer advantages in colonization and establishment processes, while S. saman did not germinate well in darkness. We suggest the use of seeds of P dulce, J. caucana and T rosea in ecological restoration processes, due to their tolerance and germination under a wide range of temperature and light conditions. Futhermore, seeds of S. saman might be used in open areas such as forest gaps.

Las estrategias de restauración ecológica en ecosistemas altamente amenazados como el bosque seco tropical, dependen del conocimiento de factores limitantes de procesos biológicos, como la germinación y la longevidad de semillas de especies típicas de los mismos. En este estudio se evaluó el efecto de la luz y la temperatura en la germinación de semillas de dos especies de Fabaceae y dos de Bignoniaceae potencialmente útiles para restauración, y se determinó su comportamiento en el almacenamiento. Para el primer objetivo, se utilizaron cuatro niveles de calidad lumínica (fotoperiodo con 12 horas de luz, oscuridad y estímulos de luz enriquecida en rojo y luz enriquecida en rojo lejano, ambas por una hora), combinados con tres niveles de temperaturas alternadas (20/25, 20/30 y 25/30°C - 16/8h). Para el segundo objetivo, se utilizaron dos niveles de contenido de humedad de las semillas, con tres niveles de temperatura de almacenamiento (20, 5 y -20°C) y dos tiempos de almacenamiento (1 y 3 meses). La variable de respuesta para ambos experimentos fue el número de semillas germinadas, expresado en porcentaje (PG). Samanea saman y Jacaranda caucana presentaron un PG significativamente diferente entre los tratamientos lumínicos, con el valor menor en la oscuridad, mientras Pithecellobium dulce y Tabebuia rosea no presentaron diferencias significativas entre tratamientos (PG>90%). La respuesta a la temperatura mostró que 25/30°C es el régimen más adecuado para promover la germinación de la mayoría de las especies. Las semillas de las cuatro especies evaluadas presentaron un comportamiento ortodoxo en el almacenamiento. Se concluye que las semillas de P. dulce, J. caucana y T. rosea son indiferentes a las condiciones de luz y temperatura probadas, confiriéndoles ciertas ventajas en procesos de colonización y establecimiento frente a S. saman, cuya germinación no se ve favorecida en la oscuridad. Se sugiere el uso de semillas de P. dulce, J. caucana y T. rosea en proyectos de restauración ecológica del bosque seco Tropical, debido a su tolerancia y germinación en condiciones ambientales con intervalos amplios de temperatura y luminosidad. Mientras que, semillas de S. saman podrían ser usadas en sitios abiertos como claros de bosques.
