ABSTRACT

Novel water-dispersible donor-acceptor-donor π-conjugated bolaamphiphiles, having dibenzophenazine as the acceptor and heteroatom-bridged amphiphilic diarylamines as the donors, have been developed. The materials displayed a distinct photoluminescence color change in response to humidity in a poly(vinylalcohol) matrix.

ABSTRACT

Cortical bone thickness is important for the mechanical function of bone. Ontogeny, aging, sex, body size, hormone levels, diet, behavior, and genetics potentially cause variations in postcranial cortical robusticity. However, the factors associated with cranial cortical robusticity remain poorly understood. Few studies have examined cortical robusticity in both cranial and postcranial bones jointly. In the present study, we used computed tomography (CT) images to measure cortical bone thicknesses in the cranial vault and humeral diaphysis. This study clearly showed that females have a greater cranial vault thickness and greater age-related increase in cranial vault thickness than males. We found an age-related increase in the full thickness of the temporal cranial vault and the width of the humeral diaphysis, as well as an age-related decrease in the cortical thickness of the frontal cranial vault and the cortical thickness of the humeral diaphysis, suggesting that the mechanisms of bone modeling in cranial and long bones are similar. A positive correlation between cortical indices in the cranial vault and humeral diaphysis also suggested that common factors affect cortical robusticity. We also examined the association of polymorphisms in the WNT16 and TNFSF11 genes with bone thickness. However, no significant associations were observed. The present study provides fundamental knowledge about similarities and differences in the mechanisms of bone modeling between cranial and postcranial bones.

ABSTRACT

Oral/dental surgical care in patients with chronic medical comorbidities, such as isovaleric acidemia (IVA), can be challenging. In addition to technical complications, different comorbidities also present a complex range of concerning factors/challenges, which can increase the incidence of morbidity and mortality associated with surgery. IVA, a congenital error of metabolism, is a rare organic acidemia with a predisposition towards acute acidosis and life-threatening metabolic decompensation during stressful conditions, such as prolonged fasting and surgery. In addition, schizophrenia, a major neurological disorder, can result in manifestation of severe dental or periodontal conditions, including pericoronitis. The condition is associated with significant risk factors of postoperative complications, such as dangerous behaviors and adverse interactions between antipsychotic drugs and anesthetic agents. A case of comorbid dental disease with two coexisting chronic and life-threatening medical conditions, one of which is rare, is an unusual encounter in oral/dental surgery that is seldomly published. Moreover, implementing a safe and effective surgical intervention in such patients requires several informed considerations. However, only a few reported experiences or guidelines exist, reporting appropriate perioperative management strategies to minimize risks. Hence, in this case report, our experience of managing one of these rare encounters of a 20-year-old man who suffered from bilaterally partially erupted third molars, associated with chronic pericoronitis and dental caries of both the maxilla wisdom teeth with coexisting IVA and schizophrenia comorbidities is described. Additionally, the presentation and anticipated complications of the comorbid disorders of the patient are briefly reviewed. In this case, the pericoronitis and dental caries were treated by surgically removing the impacted third molars and the antagonist maxilla wisdom teeth under regional anesthesia and application of antibiotics for 3 days. The patient recovered without any postoperative complications after 1 year of follow-up.

ABSTRACT

An optical lattice quantum simulator is an ideal experimental platform to investigate nonequilibrium dynamics of a quantum many-body system, which is, in general, hard to simulate with classical computers. Here, we use our quantum simulator of the Bose-Hubbard model to study dynamics far from equilibrium after a quantum quench. We successfully confirm the energy conservation law in the one- and three-dimensional systems and extract the propagation velocity of the single-particle correlation in the one- and two-dimensional systems. We corroborate the validity of our quantum simulator through quantitative comparisons between the experiments and the exact numerical calculations in one dimension. In the computationally hard cases of two or three dimensions, by using the quantum-simulation results as references, we examine the performance of a numerical method, namely, the truncated Wigner approximation, revealing its usefulness and limitation. This work constitutes an exemplary case for the usage of analog quantum simulators.

ABSTRACT

A recent experiment has observed the antiferromagnetic interaction between the ground state ^{1}S_{0} and the metastable state ^{3}P_{0} of ^{171}Yb atoms, which are fermionic. This observation combined with the use of state-dependent optical lattices allows for quantum simulation of the Kondo model. We propose that in this Kondo simulator the anomalous temperature dependence of transport, namely, the Kondo effect, can be detected through quench dynamics triggered by the shift of a trap potential. For this purpose, we improve the numerical efficiency of the minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTSs) algorithm by applying additional Trotter gates. Using the improved METTSs algorithm, we compute the quench dynamics of the one-dimensional Kondo model at finite temperatures quasiexactly. We find that the center-of-mass motion exhibits a logarithmic suppression with a decrease in the temperature, which is a characteristic feature of the Kondo effect.
