ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the treatment pattern and safety of tafluprost for glaucoma and ocular hypertension (OH) in clinical practice in China. METHODS: This post-marketing observational study included patients who received tafluprost to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) within 30d between September 2017 and March 2020 in 20 hospitals in China. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) during tafluprost treatment and within 30d after the treatment were collected. RESULTS: A total of 2544 patients were included in this study, of them 58.5% (1488/2544) had primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), 21.9% (556/2544) had OH and 19.7% (500/2544) used tafluprost for other reasons. Of 359 ADRs occurred in 10.1% (258/2544) patients, and no serious adverse event occurred. The most common ADR was conjunctival hyperemia (128 ADRs in 124 patients, 4.9%). Totally 1670 participants (65.6%) combined tafluprost with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAIs; 37.1%, 620/1670), sympathomimetics (33.5%, 559/1670), ß-blockers (33.2%, 555/1670), other prostaglandin analogs (PGAs; 15.6%, 260/1670) and other eye drops (15.1%, 253/1670). The highest incidence of conjunctival hyperemia was noted in patients who received tafluprost in combination with other PGAs (23 ADRs in 23 patients, 8.8%, 23/260) and the lowest was in combination with CAIs (16 ADRs in 16 patients, 2.6%, 16/620). Tafluprost was applied in primary angle-closure glaucoma (41.6%, 208/500), after glaucoma surgery (17.8%, 89/500) and after non-glaucoma surgery (15.8%, 79/500). CONCLUSION: Tafluprost is safe for POAG and OH, and tolerable when combined with other eye drops and under various clinical circumstances.

BACKGROUND: The majority of patients may experience atelectasis under general anesthesia, and the Trendelenburg position and pneumoperitoneum can aggravate atelectasis during laparoscopic surgery, which promotes postoperative pulmonary complications. Lung recruitment manoeuvres have been proven to reduce perioperative atelectasis, but it remains controversial which method is optimal. Ultrasonic imaging can be conducive to confirming the effect of lung recruitment manoeuvres. The purpose of our study was to assess the effects of ultrasound-guided alveolar recruitment manoeuvres by ultrasonography on reducing perioperative atelectasis and to check whether the effects of recruitment manoeuvres under ultrasound guidance (visual and semiquantitative) on atelectasis are superior to sustained inflation recruitment manoeuvres (classical and widely used) in laparoscopic gynaecological surgery. METHODS: In this randomized, controlled, double-blinded study, women undergoing laparoscopic gynecological surgery were enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either lung ultrasound-guided alveolar recruitment manoeuvres (UD group), sustained inflation alveolar recruitment manoeuvres (SI group), or no RMs (C group) using a computer-generated table of random numbers. Lung ultrasonography was performed at four predefined time points. The primary outcome was the difference in lung ultrasound score (LUS) among groups at the end of surgery. RESULTS: Lung ultrasound scores in the UD group were significantly lower than those in both the SI group and the C group immediately after the end of surgery (7.67 ± 1.15 versus 9.70 ± 102, difference, -2.03 [95% confidence interval, -2.77 to -1.29], P < 0.001; 7.67 ± 1.15 versus 11.73 ± 1.96, difference, -4.07 [95% confidence interval, -4.81 to -3.33], P < 0.001;, respectively). The intergroup differences were sustained until 30 min after tracheal extubation (9.33 ± 0.96 versus 11.13 ± 0.97, difference, -1.80 [95% confidence interval, -2.42 to -1.18], P < 0.001; 9.33 ± 0.96 versus 10.77 ± 1.57, difference, -1.43 [95% confidence interval, -2.05 to -0.82], P < 0.001;, respectively). The SI group had a significantly lower LUS than the C group at the end of surgery (9.70 ± 1.02 versus 11.73 ± 1.96, difference, -2.03 [95% confidence interval, -2.77 to -1.29] P < 0.001), but the benefit did not persist 30 min after tracheal extubation. CONCLUSIONS: During general anesthesia, ultrasound-guided recruitment manoeuvres can reduce perioperative aeration loss and improve oxygenation. Furthermore, these effects of ultrasound-guided recruitment manoeuvres on atelectasis are superior to sustained inflation recruitment manoeuvres. BACKGROUND: Serum lipids have been reported as prognosticators for malignancies, including rectal cancer (RC). Yet, their value in predicting the response of RC to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT) remains unknown. This study aimed to assess the predictive abilities of serum lipids for a bad response, and to build a serum lipid-based prediction model. METHODS: In total, 751 patients diagnosed with stage cII-III RC and treated with NACRT plus surgery from January 2007 to August 2018 were retrospectively reviewed and randomly divided into two data sets, in a ratio of 1:1. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was conducted in the development set to select possible predictors of bad NACRT response from pathoclinical factors, including serum lipids. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to further determine independent predictors, which were then used to develop a prediction index (PI). Finally, the PI was verified in the validation set, through ROC analysis and chi-squared test. RESULTS: Five independent predictors were identified: tumor length ≥4 cm, cT4 stage, carcinoembryonic antigen ≥5.0 ng/mL, irradiation with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy technique, and apolipoprotein A-I ≤1.20 g/L. Each of them was assigned a number of points. In the validation set, the area under the curve of PI appeared as 0.642 (95% confidence interval 0.586-0.697). The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and concordance were 72.3%, 52.3%, 63.8%, 61.9%, and 63.0%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Serum apolipoprotein A-I was found to correlate negatively with the RC response to NACRT. It could serve as a biomarker for guiding individualized treatment and a potential target for improving sensitivity to chemoradiation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This phase I trial aimed to determine the maximal tolerated dose (MTD) of incorporating a twice-weekly docetaxel and nedaplatin regimen into definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) as radiosensitizers in patients with inoperable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: The CCRT regimen included docetaxel (5 mg/m2, 10 mg/m2, or 15 mg/m2) and nedaplatin (5 mg/m2, 10 mg/m2, or 15 mg/m2) twice-weekly based on the traditional 3 + 3 dose escalation strategy, and radiotherapy (64 Gy in 32 fractions). The primary goals were to determine the MTD of concurrent chemotherapy and the dose limiting toxicities (DLTs). In-field objective response rate (ORR) was investigated. RESULTS: Fifteen patients had been recruited and analyzed. DLT involving persistent grade 3 esophagitis over 1 week was observed in all three patients (3/3) at dose level 3 (15 mg/m2), and two patients (2/6) experienced DLTs in the dose level 2 (10 mg/m2) due to esophageal fistula and persistent grade 3 esophagitis over 1 week, while one patient (1/6) treated at dose level 1 (5 mg/m2) exhibited DLT owing to Grade 3 increased liver enzymes, suggesting a MTD of 5 mg/m2. The in-filed ORR was both 100% in all patients and those receiving MTD. The 1-year loco-regional recurrence-free survival rate was 83.3%, 83.3% and 66.7% in dose level 1, 2, and 3, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The MTD of twice-weekly docetaxel and nedaplatin regimen was 5 mg/m2 in inoperable ESCC patients treated with definitive CCRT. Low dose concurrent docetaxel and nedaplatin showed promising radiosensitizing effect on in-filed disease control and good tolerability.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The gross tumor volume (GTV) could be an independent prognostic factor for unresectable locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LANSCLC). We aimed to develop and validate a novel integrated GTV-TNM stratification system to supplement LANSCLC sub-staging in patients treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 340 patients with unresectable LANSCLC receiving definitive CCRT. All included patients were divided into two randomized cohorts. Then the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were calculated to access the prognostic value of the integrated GTV-TNM stratification system, which was further validated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) score and F1-score. RESULTS: The optimal outcome-based GTV cut-off values (70 and 180 cm3) of the modeling cohort were used to determine each patient's integrated GTV-TNM stratum in the whole cohort. Our results indicated that a lower integrated GTV-TNM stratum could had better overall survival and progression-free survival (all P < 0.001), which was recognized as an independent prognostic factor. Also, its prognostic value was robust in both the modeling and validation cohorts. Furthermore, the prognostic validity of the integrated GTV-TNM stratification system was validated by significantly improved AUC score (0.636 vs. 0.570, P = 0.027) and F1-score (0.655 vs. 0.615, P < 0.001), compared with TNM stage. CONCLUSIONS: We proposed a novel integrated GTV-TNM stratification system to supplement unresectable LANSCLC sub-staging due to its prognostic value independent of TNM stage and other clinical characteristics, suggesting that it could be considered in individual treatment decision-making process.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To investigate the predictive values of plasma Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)- deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) copy number on disease progression and survival in stage I-III pulmonary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC). Patients and Methods: Patients with pathologically confirmed, initially diagnosed or locally recurrent stage I-III pulmonary LELC, who received locally radical treatment and had plasma EBV-DNA results, were retrospectively reviewed. Risk factors of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed, including the predictive value of pre- and post-treatment EBV-DNA levels. The EBV-DNA change during follow-up was analyzed to determine its association with tumor progression and survival. Results: A total of 102 patients were included in analysis. Eighty-eight patients had initially-diagnosed and 14 had locally recurrent disease. There were 33 patients treated with radical surgery, 55 with definite radiotherapy and 14 with both. EBV-DNA was tested pre-treatment (N = 66), post-treatment (N = 93) and/or during follow-up (N = 58). Forty-one patients had complete EBV-DNA results of all three time points. The overall 2-year PFS and OS were 66.3 and 96.0%, respectively. Pre-treatment EBV-DNA copy number > 10,000 copies/mL was a risk factor of PFS (2-year PFS, > 10,000 vs. ≤ 10,000 copies/mL, 37.2 vs. 75.1%, p = 0.007). Positive post-treatment EBV-DNA also indicated a worse PFS in univariable (2-year PFS, > 0 vs. 0 copy/mL, 25.6 vs. 76.8%, p < 0.001) and multivariable analysis (HR = 3.44, 95% CI, 1.52-7.78; p = 0.003). In the follow-up set, an increasing EBV-DNA exceeding 1,000 copies/mL strongly predicted disease progression within 3 months, with a specificity of 97.5% (95% CI: 86.8-99.6%) and was associated with impaired OS (2-year OS, > 1,000 vs. ≤ 1,000 copies/mL, 72.9 vs. 100%, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Regular testing of EBV-DNA is suggested for pulmonary LELC to predict disease progression. If EBV-DNA copy number was increasing and beyond 1,000 copies/mL during follow-up, intensive radiologic evaluations are recommended.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes of 45 Gy/15 fractions/once-daily and 45 Gy/30 fractions/twice-daily radiation schemes utilizing intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in extensive stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC), and to build up a new radiobiological model for tumor control probability (TCP) considering multiple biological effects. METHODS: Fifty-eight consecutive patients diagnosed with extensive stage SCLC, treated with chemotherapy and chest irradiation, were retrospectively reviewed. Thirty-seven received hyperfractionated IMRT (Hyper-IMRT, 45 Gy/30 fractions/twice-daily) and 21 received hypofractionated IMRT (Hypo-IMRT, 45 Gy/15 fractions/once-daily). Local progression-free survival (LPFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated and compared. An extended linear-quadratic (LQ) model, LQRG, incorporating cell repair, redistribution, reoxygenation, regrowth and Gompertzian tumor growth was created based on the clinical data. The TCP model was reformulated to predict LPFS. The classical LQ and TCP models were compared with the new models. Akaike information criterion (AIC) was used to assess the quality of the models. RESULTS: The 2-year LPFS (34.1% vs 27.9%, p = 0.44) and OS (76.9% vs 76.9%, p = 0.26) were similar between Hyper- and Hypo-IMRT patients. According to the LQRG model, the α/ß calculated was 9.2 (95% confidence interval: 8.7-9.9) Gy after optimization. The average absolute and relative fitting errors for LPFS were 9.1% and 18.7% for Hyper-IMRT, and 8.8% and 16.2% for Hypo-IMRT of the new TCP model, compared with 29.1% and 62.3% for Hyper-IMRT, and 30.7% and 65.3% for Hypo-IMRT of the classical model. CONCLUSIONS: Hypo- and Hyper-IMRT resulted in comparable local control in the chest irradiation of extensive stage SCLC. The LQRG model has better performance in predicting the TCP (or LPFS) of the two schemes.

BACKGROUND: Locoregional recurrence remains the challenge for long-term survival of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients after radical surgery, and curative-intent radiotherapy could be a treatment choice. This study aimed to assess the survival and prognostic factors of patients with postoperative locoregionally recurrent NSCLC treated with radical radiotherapy. METHODS: We reviewed medical records of 74 NSCLC patients with postoperative locoregional recurrence who received radical radiotherapy between April 2012 and February 2016 at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (Guangzhou, China). The efficacy and safety of radical radiotherapy were analyzed. The probability of survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify prognostic factors. RESULTS: Grade 3/4 adverse events included neutropenia (8 cases, 10.8%), esophagitis (7 cases, 9.5%), pneumonitis (1 case, 1.4%), and vomiting (1 case, 1.4%). The 2-year overall survival, progression-free survival, local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) rates of all patients were 84.2, 42.5, 70.0, and 50.9%, respectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that a higher biological effective dose (BED) of radiation was associated with longer LRFS [hazard ratios (HR) = 0.317, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.112-0.899, P = 0.016] and that wild-type epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was associated with longer DMFS compared with EGFR mutation (HR = 0.383, 95% CI = 0.171-0.855, P = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: Radical radiotherapy is effective and well-tolerated in NSCLC patients with postoperative locoregional recurrence. High BED is a predictor for long LRFS, and the presence of wild-type EGFR is a predictor for long DMFS.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine whether radiation-induced fibrosarcoma (RIF) in patients with a history of radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) was associated with an inferior prognosis compared to sporadic fibrosarcoma of the head and neck. METHODS: Forty-two patients with RIF who previously received radiotherapy for NPC and 124 patients with sporadic fibrosarcoma of the head and neck were identified between January 1965 and December 2013 at our institution. Information on clinicopathologic characteristics and treatment was abstracted from medical records. The primary end point was disease-specific survival (DSS). RESULTS: The median latency from NPC diagnosis to RIF diagnosis was 9.9 years (range 3.1-36.8 years). RIF was diagnosed at an older age than sporadic fibrosarcoma. Treatment modality was significantly different between the two groups, with only 64.3 % of the RIF group receiving surgery ± adjuvant treatment versus 91.1 % in the sporadic fibrosarcoma group (P < 0.001). Patients with RIF had poorer 5-year DSS compared to the sporadic fibrosarcoma group (36.2 vs. 50.4 %; P = 0.026). Multivariate analysis of the combined group indicated that patient group (P = 0.032), tumor, node, metastasis classification system stage (P = 0.019), histologic grade (P = 0.046) and treatment modality (P < 0.001) were independent variables affecting DSS. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to patients with sporadic fibrosarcoma, NPC survivors who develop RIF are older at diagnosis of fibrosarcoma and have an inferior prognosis.

Overexpression of the epidermal growth factor receptor can be found in 80 % of patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and is associated with shorter survival. In this work, we evaluated the feasibility of adding cetuximab to concurrent cisplatin and radiotherapy (RT) in locoregionally advanced NPC. Twenty-eight patients with locoregionally advanced NPC who received the combination therapy were retrospectively reviewed and short-term efficacy was evaluated. Grade 3-4 oral mucositis occurred in 20 (71.4 %) patients. Grade 3 radiotherapy-related dermatitis occurred in seven patients (25 %). Three patients (14.3 %) had grade 3 and one patient (3.6 %) had grade 4 cetuximab-related acneiform rashes. These grade 3-4 skin and mucosal toxic effects were manageable and reversible. At a median follow-up of 33.4 months (95 % CI 29.2-38.1 months), the 2-year progression-free survival was 89.3 % (95 % CI 76.4-98.1 %). In conclusion, concurrent administration of cetuximab, cisplatin and RT is a feasible strategy against locoregionally advanced NPC. Preliminary survival data compare favorably with historic data and further follow-up is warranted.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the efficacy, safety, and quality of life (QoL) measure of transdermal fentanyl (TDF) for moderate-to-severe pain due to oral mucositis caused by chemoradiotherapy in patients with advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Patients with NPC who experienced moderate-to-severe oral mucosal pain during chemoradiotherapy (n = 78) received TDF for pain relief. Pain relief and QoL were compared before and after treatment. The mean numeric rating scale score was reduced from 7.41 ± 0.96 before treatment to 5.54 ± 0.86, 3.27 ± 0.73, 2.88 ± 0.62, and 2.82 ± 0.68 on days 1, 4, 7, and 10, respectively, after treatment (P < 0.001). Karnofsky performance status and SPAASMS (Score for pain, Physical activity levels, Additional pain medication, Additional physician/emergency room visits, Sleep, Mood, and Side effects) scores showed significant improvement after treatment, indicating an improved QoL of patients (both P<0.001). The most common adverse reactions were nausea and vomiting (10.26%). No serious life-threatening adverse events and no symptoms of drug withdrawal were observed. TDF is effective, safe, and improves QoL in treating pain due to oral mucositis caused by chemoradiotherapy in NPC patients.

BACKGROUND: To report the feasibility, efficacy, and toxicity of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for the treatment of portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) and/or inferior vena cava tumor thrombosis (IVCTT) in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients treated with SBRT using volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for HCC with PVTT/IVCTT between July 2010 and May 2012 were analyzed. Of these, 33 had PVTT and 8 had IVCTT. SBRT was designed to target the tumor thrombosis and deliver a median total dose of 36 Gy (range, 30-48 Gy) in six fractions during two weeks. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 10.0 months. At the time of analysis, 15 (36.6%) achieved complete response, 16 (39.0%) achieved partial response, 7 (17.1%) patients were stable, and three (7.3%) patients showed progressive disease. No treatment-related Grade 4/5 toxicity was seen within three months after SBRT. One patient had Grade 3 elevation of bilirubin. The one-year overall survival rate was 50.3%, with a median survival of 13.0 months. The only independent predictive factor associated with better survival was response to radiotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: VMAT-based SBRT is a safe and effective treatment option for PVTT/IVCTT in HCC. Prospective randomized controlled trials are warranted to validate the role of SBRT in these patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of targeting protein for Xklp2 (TPX2) and its significance in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lung. METHOD: Two SCC cell lines and 4 immortalized bronchial epithelial cell lines (as a precancerous model) were examined by Western blot for TPX2 expression. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis for TPX2 was also performed using tumor tissues from 21 patients with SCC of the lung. The expression of TPX2 was studied by immunohistochemistry (using tissue microarray) on paraffin-embedded sections of pulmonary SCC and corresponding precancerous lesions from a group of 319 patients. RESULTS: TPX2 was variably expressed in all the cell lines studied. Compared with matched controls using normal lung tissue, high level of TPX2 mRNA was detected in 16 of the 21 SCC tumor tissue samples analyzed. Immunohistochemical study showed that TPX2 was mainly present in tumor tissues but not in normal controls. The expression of TPX2 correlated with tumor grade, stage and nodal status. As for precancerous lesions, the level of TPX2 was also increased, in accordance with the degree of dysplasia. CONCLUSIONS: Expression of TPX2 may play a role in carcinogenesis of bronchial epithelium and tumor progression of pulmonary SCC. It may also represent a potential biomarker for surveillance of SCC of lung.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: It is supposed that bronchial epithelial cells responses to the environmental stimuli are different between asthmatic and non-asthmatic individuals, which contribute to the pathogenesis of asthma. These different responses produce different mediators. If differential gene expressions are found in bronchial epithelial cells of asthmatic and non-asthmatic individuals after the same stimuli in vitro, and these genes are overexpressed in asthmatic children in vivo, then it is concluded that these genes may be associated with asthma. Therefore the authors analyzed the differential gene expressions in the bronchial epithelium cells of asthmatic and non-asthmatic children after RSV infection in vitro. Among these genes, Galectine-7 (lectin, galactoside-binding, soluble, 7, Galectin-7) was 8 times up-regulated in asthmatic children. Galectine-7 was associated with skin keratinocyte apoptosis. The authors hypothesized that Galectin-7 may also be associated with bronchial epithelial cell apoptosis in asthmatic children. The aim of this study was to understand the role of Galectine-7 in bronchial epithelial cell apoptosis in asthma. METHODS: The bronchial mucosae of one asthmatic child and one non-asthmatic child were obtained by biopsy and cultured in vitro. The bronchial epithelial cells were infected by RSV. The differential gene expressions were analyzed with micro array. Among those differentially expressed genes, Galectin-7 was 8 times up-regulated in asthmatic children. The bronchial mucosae from 10 asthmatic children and 17 non-asthma children were investigated for cell DNA break, Galectine-7 and mRNA expression, Caspase-3 expression by TUNEL, hybridization in situ and immunochemistry. Image analysis was used for quantitative assessment. RESULTS: Galectine-7 gene was 8 times up-regulated in bronchial epithelial cells from asthmatic children after RSV infection in vitro. Galectin-7 and mRNA were overexpressed in bronchial epithelial cells in asthma in vivo. Bronchial epithelial cell apoptosis increased in asthma in vivo. CONCLUSION: Galectin-7 may be associated with bronchial epithelial cell apoptosis in asthma.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To establish immortalized cell line from the urothelium of the urinary bladder and identify the characteristics of the cell line. METHODS: Human papillomavirus 16 (HPV-16) plasmid was used to transfect urothelium of infant urinary bladder in vitro with the help of Fugene-6, and this plasmid contained E6 and E7 genes of HPV-16. We also identified the existence of HPV-16 E6 and E7 genes and the biological characteristics of the cell line by PCR, immunohistochemistry, and the biology identification. RESULTS: BLTR-4 cell line, produced from the transfection of HPV-16K plasmid, was a cell line from urothelium with the expression of HPV-16 E6 and E7 genes. It had been cultured more than 70 passages, and the characteristics of growth was similar to the immortalized cell line as reported. CONCLUSIONS: BLTR-4 cell line is an immortalized cell line from urothelium of the urinary bladder, which contains HPV-16 E6 and E7 genes. BLTR-4 cell line is a good experimental model to investigate the relationship of the infection of high risk HPV and transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) in vitro.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To detect hyper methylation of p16 gene in plasma DNA from patients with lung cancer, and to assess its potential as a malignant marker. METHODS: Using a modified semi-nested methylation-specific PCR (MSP), the status of methylation of the p16 was investigated in plasma DNA from 137 lung cancer patients and 112 matched tumor tissues. RESULTS: Hypermethylation of the p16 was present in 75.2% (103/137) of the plasma samples and 80.4% (90/112) of the tumor tissues. Hypermethylation of the p16 in the plasma was detected in 77.9% squamous-cell carcinoma, 65.1% adenocarcionma, 75.1% adeno-squamous-cell carcinoma, and 91.7% small-cell lung cancer. Only in those patients whose tumor tissues had hypermethylation of p16 gene, similar changes could be detected in their plasma samples. Hypermethylation of the p16 in plasma and the corresponding tumor tissues was not significantly correlated with the clinical stage and pathological type of the tumor. CONCLUSION: The result indicates that hypermethylation of the p16 may be a useful marker in the auxiliary diagnosis of lung cancer.
