ABSTRACT

Airborne pollen distribution in the city of Nicosia (Cyprus) was measured volumetrically during two consecutive years 2007-2008 on weekly basis using Lanzoni trap (Lanzoni VPPS 2000). A total of 7,880 pollen grains/m(3) belonging to 44 taxa, in 2007 were 3,593 pollen grains/m(3) and in 2008 it was 4,287 pollen grains/m(3), were determined. Out of these, 25 belonged to the arboreal and 19 to the non-arboreal taxa. At the end of 2 years, total pollen counts were 78.76% arboreal, 19.32% non-arboreal, and 1.92% unidentified taxa. The number of pollen in the arboreal plants followed the trend as Pinaceae (29.96%), Cupressaceae/Taxaceae (18.33%), Olea europaea L. (6.92%), and Quercus spp. (4.92%), and for non-arboreal representatives, these were Poaceae (8.46%), Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae (2.61%), Plantago spp. (1.69%), and Parietaria spp. (1.51%). The distribution of pollen in the atmosphere of Nicosia followed the trend as March, April, May, and June.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the differences in the concentrations of airborne fungi and pollens between the towns located in the province of Izmir and to determine the factors contributing to these differences. Five stations in each of four towns (Buca, Konak, Bornova, and Karsiyaka) were randomly selected as the research areas. Fungus (cfu/m(3)) and pollen counts (cm(2)/pollen count) in the air samples collected from each station between June 2003 and May 2004 were measured. The results revealed that whereas Karsiyaka had the highest fungus concentration (521.33 +/- 777.1), Buca and Bornova had the lowest concentration (482.67 +/- 308.44). The mean fungus concentration in the province of Izmir was 501.5 +/- 486.7. Pollen concentration was the highest in Konak (486.67 +/- 839.06) and the lowest in Bornova (369.83 +/- 551.13). Fungus and pollen concentrations revealed no difference between the towns (p > 0.05). The relationship between pollen-fungus concentrations and temperature-dust-humidity-sulphur-dioxide was investigated but it was found statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). As a result of regression analysis, it was determined that correlation of atmospheric parameters had no effects on pollen and fungus concentrations (p > 0.05).

ABSTRACT

The chemical composition and the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils isolated from the leaves (LEO) and flowers (FEO) of Anthemis xylopoda, an endemic taxon of Turkey, were investigated. Borneol was the major constituent of both the oils studied (30.15 and 31.85%, respectively). The antimicrobial activities of both oils were separately evaluated against 13 microorganisms. The disc diffusion method was used for the antimicrobial activity test. Results showed that both oils of Anthemis xylopoda exhibited a significant antimicrobial activity.
