ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) present difficulties in self-regulation and interaction, which is a challenge for psychotherapists that is also addressed in BPD-specific interventions. Against this background, outpatient psychotherapists were surveyed about the factors playing a decisive role in their treatment offer for patients with BPD. METHODS: Psychotherapists for adults were contacted via their email address published on the website of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung (Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians), 231 of whom answered an online questionnaire. The results were analysed descriptively and examined inferentially with regard to the psychotherapists' admission behaviour. RESULTS: Almost 90% reported that they would generally accept patients with BPD in therapy. However, of those, 85% did not have a therapy slot available. The psychotherapists' learned approach of treatment was not a decisive factor in determining whether they were willing to provide treatment. Most of the psychotherapists (85%) recommended a BPD disorder-specific therapy such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) or Schema Therapy (ST). However, only just under 7% were certified in such a disorder-specific approach. Significant individual stress factors described by the psychotherapists were suicidal risk (70%) and potential other-directed aggression (59%). In addition, it was shown that it played a role whether the psychotherapists were trained in an additional therapy approach (with at least 16 teaching units) or not. CONCLUSION: The care situation for people with BPD seeking an outpatient psychotherapy place is clearly in need of improvement. This is mainly due to a general lack of available therapy places as well as various fears and anxieties, such as increased suicidality, which in turn can have a negative impact on the provision of outpatient therapy. Psychotherapists who have undergone disorder-specific further training feel less burdened by suicidal behaviour. However, since only a small number of them are able to offer BPD-specific therapies, it is essential to expand and (financially) support specific training programmes. In order to meet the demand for care, professional changes are urgently needed.

ABSTRACT

The immediate detection and correct processing of affective facial expressions are one of the most important competences in social interaction and thus a main subject in emotion and affect research. Generally, studies in these research domains, use pictures of adults who display affective facial expressions as experimental stimuli. However, for studies investigating developmental psychology and attachment behaviour it is necessary to use age-matched stimuli, where it is children that display affective expressions. PSYCAFE represents a newly developed picture-set of children's faces. It includes reference portraits of girls and boys aged 4 to 6 years averaged digitally from different individual pictures, that were categorized to six basic affects (fear, disgust, happiness, sadness, anger and surprise) plus a neutral facial expression by cluster analysis. This procedure led to deindividualized and affect prototypical portraits. Individual affect expressive portraits of adults from an already validated picture-set (KDEF) were used in a similar way to create affect prototypical images also of adults. The stimulus set has been validated on human observers and entail emotion recognition accuracy rates and scores for intensity, authenticity and likeability ratings of the specific affect displayed. Moreover, the stimuli have also been characterized by the iMotions Facial Expression Analysis Module, providing additional data on probability values representing the likelihood that the stimuli depict the expected affect. Finally, the validation data from human observers and iMotions are compared to data on facial mimicry of healthy adults in response to these portraits, measured by facial EMG (m. zygomaticus major and m. corrugator supercilii).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explain student biology teachers' intention to teach sustainable nutrition (SN) in classes using an extended model of the theory of planned behavior. DESIGN: Germany-wide online questionnaire study in November/December 2019. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 621 student biology teachers (mean age, 23.3 years; SD, 3.9 years; 77% female). DEPENDENT VARIABLE: Intention to teach SN. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: Theory of planned behavior variables (attitudes toward teaching, subjective norms, self-efficacy), intention to eat sustainably, attitudes toward SN, knowledge about SN, prior university education for sustainable development experiences. ANALYSES: Descriptive statistics, bivariate Spearman correlations, and a path model are reported. RESULTS: The extended TPB model provided a moderate-to-high explanation of the intention to teach SN (R²â€¯= 0.50; P < 0.001). Respondents with a higher intention to eat sustainably in their daily lives reported more positive attitudes toward teaching, higher self-efficacy, and a higher teaching intention. Prior university education for sustainable development experiences also predicted the intention to teach. A higher level of knowledge about SN was only associated with higher self-efficacy. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Lectures and seminars on SN in biology teacher training may foster student (biology) teachers' self-efficacy in teaching SN and ensure that they understand the importance of their subject-specific commitment, involvement, and attitudes in implementing SN in schools.

ABSTRACT

Facial mimicry, the unconscious imitation of others' affective facial expressions, serves as an important basis for interpersonal communication. Although there are many studies dealing with this phenomenon regarding the interaction between adults, only few experiments have explored facial mimicry in response to affective facial expressions of children. In the following study affect-prototypical video clips of children's and adults' faces were presented to 44 adults while the activity of corrugator supercilii and zygomaticus muscles was electromyographically measured. A discrete mimic reaction was detected in response to each basic affect (fear, disgust, happiness, sadness, surprise and anger). The activity of corrugator supercilii muscle was significantly lower when affective facial expressions of children were presented in contrast to those of adults. In addition, negative correlations between alexithymia and the averaged facial EMG activity were detected.
