ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To perform a longitudinal investigation of risk factors in premature infants' cognitive, motor, and language development. Methods: Thirty-three preterm infants were assessed at 4, 8, and 12 months of corrected age, using the Bayley-III Scales. Parents completed questionnaires regarding development opportunities at home, parenting practices and knowledge. Results: Significant associations were found (1) at 4-months between cognitive scores and family income, variety of stimuli, availability of toys, parenting practices and knowledge; language and parenting practices; and motor skills and parenting practices; (2) at 8-months between cognitive score and length of stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), gestational age, birth weight, toys, and parenting knowledge; language and toys; and motor skills and toys and parenting knowledge; (3) at 12-months between cognitive scores and length of stay in the NICU, family income, breastfeeding, toys, and parenting knowledge; language and income and toys; and motor scores and length of stay in the NICU, gestational age, income, stimuli, toys, and parenting knowledge. Regression analyses indicated that: for (1) cognitive development, stimulus variety explained 72% of the model variance at 4 months of age; time at the NICU explained 67 and 43% at 8 and 12 months of age, respectively, and breastfeeding time explained 41% of the model variance at 12 months; (2) for language development, family income explained 42% of the model variance at 12 months; and for motor development (3), time at the NICU explained 80% of the model variance at 12 months. Conclusions: The development over the first year of life is not explained by the severity of birth conditions and associated morbidities only, but also by parenting practices.


RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar longitudinalmente os fatores de risco no desenvolvimento cognitivo, motor e de linguagem de prematuros. Métodos: Participaram 33 crianças prematuras avaliadas aos quatro, oito e 12 meses de idade corrigida, com as escalas Bayley III. Os pais completaram questionários referentes às oportunidades do lar, práticas e conhecimento parentais. Resultados: Associações significantes foram encontradas: (1) aos quatro meses, entre os escores cognitivos e renda familiar, variedade de estímulos, disponibilidade de brinquedos, práticas e conhecimento parental; e linguagem e motor com conhecimento parental; (2) aos oito meses, entre os escores cognitivos e tempo de Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI), idade gestacional, peso ao nascer, brinquedos e conhecimento parental; linguagem e brinquedos; e motor e brinquedos e conhecimento parental; (3) aos 12 meses, entre os escores cognitivos com o tempo de UTI, renda, meses de amamentação, brinquedos e conhecimento parental; linguagem e renda e brinquedos; e motor e idade gestacional, tempo de UTI, renda, estimulação, brinquedos e conhecimento parental. Análises de regressão indicaram que: para o desenvolvimento (1) cognitivo, a variedade de estímulos explicou 72% da variância do modelo aos quatro meses; o tempo de UTI explicou 67 e 43% aos oito e 12 meses respectivamente, e o tempo de amamentação explicou 41% da variância do modelo aos 12 meses; (2) para o desenvolvimento da linguagem, a renda familiar explicou 42% da variância do modelo aos 12 meses; e para o desenvolvimento (3) motor, o tempo de UTI explicou 80% da variância do modelo aos 12 meses. Conclusões: O desenvolvimento no primeiro ano de vida não é explicado apenas pela gravidade ao nascer e pelas morbidades clínicas associadas, mas também pelas práticas parentais.

ABSTRACT

Cassia is a diverse legume genus widespread in the (sub-)tropical zone of the world. Several studies have been done on this genus; however, significant changes have occurred at the taxonomic level over the years. This has led to inaccurate information about seed dormancy in Cassia since many species are no longer included in the genus. Thus, our work aims to investigate and update the information about the kind of dormancy that occurs in seeds of Cassia species and also look into two notorious species in this group (C. fistula and C. javanica) to compare myxospermous vs. non-myxospermous seeds regarding dormancy and germination traits. Seed dormancy reports were found for 53 Cassia species, and the only kind of seed dormancy found for these species was physical dormancy (PY). Non-dormancy was not found, and all seeds had a blockage to water uptake during the dormant state, that is, all have PY. Of these 53 species, only 18 are currently included in the genus Cassia. C. fistula and C. javanica have fully developed embryos, and dormancy is only conferred by the (water-impermeable) seed coat. The lens in the seed coat is the only structure that creates a water pathway to break PY in C. fistula. Myxospermous seeds came out of dormancy faster than non-myxospermous ones. PY seems to be the only kind of seed dormancy that has evolved in Cassia. The extent of this kind of dormancy in all subtribe Cassiinae is also discussed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of two different implementation forms of the EU School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS). DESIGN: A quasi-experimental design was applied including a thrice as well as a twice weekly intervention group. Repeated 24 h dietary recalls were used to measure children's fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake. Effects were analysed on days with and without F&V deliveries using hierarchical linear regression models. SETTING: Twelve primary schools in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. SUBJECTS: Third and fourth graders (n 664). RESULTS: Average daily F&V intake at pre-intervention was 0·84 frequencies in the thrice weekly intervention group, 0·90 frequencies in the twice weekly intervention group and 1·25 frequencies in the control group. Providing children thrice weekly with F&V increased children's F&V intake on average by 0·96 (P<0·001) frequencies/d. The effects were higher on days with (1·07; P<0·001) than on days without (0·75; P<0·001) F&V deliveries. Distributing F&V twice weekly resulted in an increase of 0·75 (P<0·001) frequencies/d on average, again with higher effects on days with (1·30; P<0·001) than without (0·48; P<0·003) F&V deliveries. Subgroup analysis revealed some indications for differential effectiveness only in the twice weekly intervention group. CONCLUSIONS: The SFVS with thrice or twice weekly deliveries of F&V led to a significant increase in children's F&V intake on days with and without deliveries. The latter might provide an indication of positive long-term effects of the scheme. The scheme shows equal efficiency for almost all subgroups.

ABSTRACT

The high prevalence of childhood obesity is a major concern in developed and developing countries. An increase in fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake is perceived as one of the numerous strategies to prevent and reduce the risk of adiposity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relevance of personal and social determinants in explaining children's F&V intake. Written questionnaire data were collected from 702 parent-child pairs that included 3rd and 4th graders (aged 7 to 10) and their parents. Children's F&V intake was recorded over three food records. Hierarchical linear regression models were applied to assess the impact of personal and social determinants on children's F&V intake. Regression models focusing on personal and social determinants revealed that the most promising personal determinants pertained to the knowledge of different types of F&V and preferences for F&V. Moreover, an exclusive focus on social determinants indicated that parental modeling and peer influence had significant and positive relationships with children's F&V intake, whereas verbal directives to eat F&V exhibited a significant and negative relationship. In combination, the following four personal and social determinants were demonstrated to be significant: knowledge of different types of F&V, preferences for F&V and parental modeling, all of which had positive relationships, and verbal directives to eat F&V, which had a negative impact. The results identify important associative determinants of children's F&V intake. These are in part personal and in part social and are shown by our analysis to be of equal and perhaps mutual importance. Therefore, we suggest that interventions aimed at improving children's F&V intake should address children's preferences for F&V, impart knowledge concerning the variety of F&V and encourage parents to act as role models.
