ABSTRACT

Depression constitutes a pervasive global mental health concern and stands as a principal determinant of elevated suicide rates worldwide. Recent empirical investigations have showcased the significant potential of visual art therapy (VAT) in ameliorating symptoms among individuals with depression. Nevertheless, specific studies have yielded findings marked by inconclusiveness, underscoring the imperative need for further research to comprehensively establish its efficacy. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of extant research, to ascertain the efficacy and effect size of VAT as an intervention for adults with depressive symptoms. A comprehensive search was conducted across 10 databases. The search encompassed articles published from the inception of these databases up until October 18, 2023. Two researchers screened the literature in accordance with inclusion and exclusion criteria and performed a thorough quality assessment. The original data and the data obtained from the literature were extracted for further analysis. The statistical analysis of the data was performed using Stata 17.0 software. fifteen studies were included, encompassing a total of 932 participants. The outcomes of meta-analysis unveiled a statistically significant effect of VAT in diminishing depressive symptoms among adults (SMD = -0.73; 95% CI, -1.07 to -0.39; p < 0.001; 15 randomised controlled trials (RCTs); low-quality evidence). The subgroup analysis indicated that VAT exhibited heightened effectiveness among adults below 65 years of age, with interventions lasting ≤12 weeks demonstrating superior efficacy. Additionally, sensitivity analysis underscored the robustness and reliability of the findings. VAT appears to alleviate depressive symptoms among adults. Existing research indicates that the effectiveness of VAT is influenced by factors, such as intervention population characteristics and intervention duration. However, to comprehensively probe the efficacy of VAT, future studies should strive for larger sample sizes, multicentre collaborations, and long-term follow-ups.

ABSTRACT

Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) are outstanding candidates for next-generation optoelectronic materials, with considerable prospects of use and commercial value. However, knowledge about their toxicity is scarce, which may limit their commercialization. Here, for the first time, we studied the cardiotoxicity and molecular mechanisms of representative CsPbBr3 nanoparticles in LHPs. After their intranasal administration to Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice, using advanced synchrotron radiation, mass spectrometry, and ultrasound imaging, we revealed that CsPbBr3 nanoparticles can severely affect cardiac systolic function by accumulating in the myocardial tissue. RNA sequencing and Western blotting demonstrated that CsPbBr3 nanoparticles induced excessive oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes, thereby provoking endoplasmic reticulum stress, disturbing calcium homeostasis, and ultimately leading to apoptosis. Our findings highlight the cardiotoxic effects of LHPs and provide crucial toxicological data for the product.

ABSTRACT

Radiation-induced heart disease is a serious side effect of radiation therapy that can lead to severe consequences. However, effective and safe methods for their prevention and treatment are presently lacking. This study reports the crucial function of fullerenols in protecting cardiomyocytes from radiation injury. First, fullerenols are synthesized using a simple base-catalyzed method. Next, the as-prepared fullerenols are applied as an effective free radical scavenger and broad-spectrum antioxidant to protect against X-ray-induced cardiomyocyte injury. Their ability to reduce apoptosis via the mitochondrial signaling pathway at the cellular level is then verified. Finally, it is observed in animal models that fullerenols accumulate in the heart and alleviate myocardial damage induced by X-rays. This study represents a timely and essential analysis of the prevention and treatment of radiological myocardial injury, providing new insights into the applications of fullerenols for therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT

Lead-based perovskite nanoparticles (Pb-PNPs) have found extensive applications across diverse fields. However, because of poor stability and relatively strong water solubility, the potential toxicity of Pb-PNPs released into the environment during their manufacture, usage, and disposal has attracted significant attention. Inhalation is a primary route through which human exposure to Pb-PNPs occurs. Herein, the toxic effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of Pb-PNPs in the respiratory system are investigated. The in vitro cytotoxicity of CsPbBr3 nanoparticles in BEAS-2B cells is studied using multiple bioassays and electron microscopy. CsPbBr3 nanoparticles of different concentrations induce excessive oxidative stress and cell apoptosis. Furthermore, CsPbBr3 nanoparticles specifically recruit the TGF-ß1, which subsequently induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition. In addition, the biodistribution and lung toxicity of representative CsPbBr3 nanoparticles in ICR mice are investigated following intranasal administration. These findings indicate that CsPbBr3 nanoparticles significantly induce pulmonary inflammation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition and can even lead to pulmonary fibrosis in mouse models. Above findings expose the adverse effects and molecular mechanisms of Pb-PNPs in the lung, which broadens the safety data of Pb-PNPs.

ABSTRACT

Subthreshold depression (StD) is a condition that significantly reduces the quality of life and increases the risk of developing major depressive disorder (MDD). In order to investigate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) in preventing the onset of MDD and improving depressive symptoms in adults with StD (AStDs), we conducted a systematic search of nine databases and included a total of 15 studies. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) were calculated using random effects models. RoB2 tool and GRADEpro software were used to assess the methodological quality and evidence. Funnel plots, Egger's, and Begg's tests were used to analyze publication bias. Sensitivity, subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to explore potential sources of heterogeneity. The results showed that NPIs had a significant effect in preventing the onset of MDD and improving depressive symptoms. Subgroup analysis revealed that NPIs were particularly effective in general adult populations, during short-term follow-up (FU) periods, among pregnant women, and in universal prevention programs. The results were found to be robust and credible, as they were less sensitive to changes in the analysis method. Timely detection and treatment of StD is feasible and important, as it can effectively delay or prevent the onset of MDD.

ABSTRACT

Complex systems are embedded in our everyday experience. Stochastic modelling enables us to understand and predict the behaviour of such systems, cementing its utility across the quantitative sciences. Accurate models of highly non-Markovian processes - where the future behaviour depends on events that happened far in the past - must track copious amounts of information about past observations, requiring high-dimensional memories. Quantum technologies can ameliorate this cost, allowing models of the same processes with lower memory dimension than corresponding classical models. Here we implement such memory-efficient quantum models for a family of non-Markovian processes using a photonic setup. We show that with a single qubit of memory our implemented quantum models can attain higher precision than possible with any classical model of the same memory dimension. This heralds a key step towards applying quantum technologies in complex systems modelling.

ABSTRACT

Lead-based perovskite nanoparticles (Pb-PNPs) with superior optoelectronic properties are promising alternatives for the next generation of photovoltaics materials. This raises a great concern about their potential exposure toxicity in biological systems. However, little is known about their adverse effects on the gastrointestinal tract system so far. Here, the aim is to investigate the biodistribution, biotransformation, potential gastrointestinal tract toxicity, and effect on the gut microbiota after oral exposure to the CsPbBr3 perovskite nanoparticles (CPB PNPs). The advanced synchrotron radiation based microscopic X-ray fluorescence scanning and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy demonstrate that high doses of CPB (CPB-H) PNPs can gradually transform into different lead-based compounds, subsequently accumulating in the gastrointestinal tract, especially the colon. Meanwhile, the pathological changes of stomach, small intestine, and colon reveal that CPB-H PNPs have higher gastrointestinal tract toxicity than Pb(Ac)2 , consequently leading to colitis-like symptoms. More importantly, 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis discloses that CPB-H PNPs cause more significant alterations in the richness and diversity of the gut microbiota related to inflammation, intestinal barrier, and immune function than Pb(Ac)2 . The findings may contribute to shedding light on understanding the adverse effects on gastrointestinal tract and gut microbiota of Pb-PNPs.

Objective To explore the role of autophagy, apoptosis of neutrophils and neutrophils extracellular traps (NET) formation in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods Thirty-six patients with SLE were recruited as research subjects, and 32 healthy controls matched accordingly were enrolled as control subjects. The expression levels of microtubule associated protein 1 light chain 3B (LC3B), autophagy-related gene5(ATG5), P62, B-cell lymphoma 2(Bcl2), Bcl2-related X protein (BAX) in neutrophils were detected by Western blot analysis. Flow cytometry was employed to analyze the expression of LC3B on neutrophils. The expression level of myeloperoxidase(MPO) in plasma was estimated by ELISA. Furthermore, neutrophils were cultured in vitro and stimulated by 100 nmol/L rapamycin and 10 µg/mL lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for 6 hours, respectively. And then, the expression levels of LC3B, ATG5, P62, Bcl2 and BAX in neutrophils were detected by Western blot analysis. The level of MPO in culture supernatant was detected by ELISA. The change of fluorescence intensity of NET in culture supernatant was assayed by SytoxTM Green staining combined with fluorescence spectrophotometry. Results Compared with healthy controls, the levels of autophagy and apoptosis of neutrophils and NET formation in SLE patients were increased. The level of apoptosis and NET formation was positively associated with neutrophil autophagy. The level of autophagy showed an increase but had no effect on apoptosis and NET formation for neutrophil stimulated by rapamycin. The levels of autophagy and NET formation also increased with no significant effect on apoptosis for neutrophil induced by LPS. Conclusion The autophagy, apoptosis and NET formation of neutrophils increase in SLE patients. The activation of autophagy and NET in neutrophils possibly result from the inflammatory internal environment in SLE patients.

ABSTRACT

Radiation gastroenteritis represents one of the most prevalent and hazardous complications of abdominopelvic radiotherapy, which not only severely reduces patients' life quality but also restricts radiotherapy efficacy. However, there is currently no clinically available oral radioprotector for this threatening disease due to its complex pathogenesis and the harsh gastrointestinal environment. To this end, this study developed a facile but effective oral radioprotector, ergothioneine hyaluronate (EGT@HA) gel, protecting against radiation gastroenteritis by synergistically regulating oxidative stress, inflammation, and gut microbiota. In vitro and cellular experiments verified the chemical stability and free radical scavenging ability of EGT and its favorable cellular radioprotective efficacy by inhibiting intracellular reactive oxidative species (ROS) generation, DNA damage, mitochondrial damage, and apoptosis. At the in vivo level, EGT@HA with prolonged gastrointestinal residence mitigated radiation-induced gastrointestinal tissue injury, apoptosis, neutrophil infiltration, and gut flora dysbiosis. For the first time, this work investigated the protective effects of EGT@HA gel on radiation gastroenteritis, which not only hastens the advancement of the novel gastrointestinal radioprotector but also provides a valuable gastrointestinal radioprotection paradigm by synergistically modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, and gut microbiota disturbance.

BACKGROUND: Semaphorin 4A (Sema4A) is an immunoregulatory molecule that is closely related to the pathogenesis of some autoimmune diseases. However, the relationship between Sema4A and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) remains unknown. We therefore aimed to investigate the expression and clinical value of Sema4A in SLE patients. METHODS: Patients with SLE, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. The whole blood samples were collected from SLE (83), RA (29) and HC (85), and the expression of Sema4A on several types of leukocytes in peripheral blood was detected by flow cytometry. The serum samples were collected from SLE(77), RA (23) and HC (63), and the concentrations of soluble Sema4A in plasma were detected by ELISA. The diagnostic value of membrane-bound and soluble Sema4A in SLE patients was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: The concentration of soluble Sema4A was significantly higher in plasma from SLE patients compared to that from HC and RA patients. In SLE patients, the ratio of CD4+CD11c+ myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) expressing Sema4A increased significantly, and the levels of soluble Sema4A and membrane-bound Sema4A were negatively correlated with the levels of C3 and C4, respectively. The same result was observed for membrane-bound Sema4A on CD4+CD11c+ mDCs cells. In addition, the level of soluble Sema4A negatively correlated with the concentration of hemoglobin (Hb). Importantly, the expression ratio of membrane-bound Sema4A on CD4+CD11c+ mDCs was positively correlated with systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index (SLEDAI). Finally, we revealed that soluble and membrane- bound Sema4A had high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of SLE, and had a greater ability to distinguish between SLE and RA. CONCLUSION: Sema4A has potential as a new diagnostic biomarker for SLE, and is promising for distinguishing between SLE and RA.

Subthreshold depression (StD) is very common, with an estimated global incidence of 25%, and is associated with other clinical conditions. Nonpharmacological interventions have been demonstrated to be effective, but which one is best should be further investigated. This study aims to compare and rank the efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions in adults with StD. Ten databases were searched, and comparisons were made using a random-effects network meta-analysis using the frequentist framework. The assumption of local consistency was assessed by using the node-splitting method. The surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) was used to separately rank each intervention. A total of 32 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. The results showed that psychotherapy, as an intervention class, had significantly positive effects compared to control groups (SMD = -0.78, 95% CI: -1.06, -0.49) and had the highest rank (SUCRA, 79.0%; mean rank, 1.6). Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), as an individual intervention, had significantly positive effects relative to all control groups and had the highest rank (SUCRA, 82.5%; mean rank, 3.1). We speculate that psychotherapy, especially CBT, may be the most effective nonpharmacological intervention to improve StD in adults. More RCTs examining the efficacy of different nonpharmacological interventions are needed.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The aim is to evaluate the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) in older adults. We searched six databases to identify articles published in English or Chinese until January 30th, 2022. Methods: The two authors of the review independently selected the studies, assessed the risk of bias, and extracted the data. Fourteen studies were included. Results: Based on the results from sleep logs, a significant pooled effect size was observed for sleep efficiency (SE%) (MD = 8.36; 95% CI, 5.96-10.76; I2 = 77%; p < .00001), sleep onset latency (SOL) (MD = -9.29; 95% CI, -13.62 to -4.96; I2 = 64%; p < 0.0001), wake after sleep onset (WASO) (MD = -23.44; 95% CI, -32.41 to -14.47; I2= 85%; p < .00001), and total sleep time (TST) (MD = -12.35; 95% CI, -21.27 to -3.42; I2 = 63%; p = 0.007). Conclusions: Our study suggests that CBT-I may be a safe and effective approach for improving insomnia in older adults.

ABSTRACT

Coherence and entanglement are both the fundamental properties which quantify the degree of nonclassicality possessed in a quantum state. Recently coherence and entanglement are considered as a dynamical resource where the nonclassicality is strongly related to the amount of the static resources which can be generated in a quantum process. In [Phys. Rev. Lett.125, 130401 (2020)10.1103/PhysRevLett.125.130401], for the first time, the authors study the interconvertability of these two kinds of dynamical resources. Here, we demonstrate this resource conversion in an all optical setup, and successfully observe the dynamical resource conversion. The experimental observation prove the ability of manipulating dynamical resource within current quantum photonic technologies.

ABSTRACT: To determine the effect of recorded maternal voice on emergence delirium (ED) in children under general anesthesia, a three-group randomized trial was conducted. A total of 102 children were randomly assigned to mother recording group (n = 34), stranger recording group (n = 34), and control group (n = 34). All subjects were assessed for ED with the Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium Scale; pain with the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability Scale; and various recovery durations and hemodynamic parameters at six time points. One-way analysis of variance showed that the ED score was significantly lower in the mother recording group (F = 18.520, p = 0.000), and statistical significance was observed in the duration of eye opening (p = 0.001) and tracheal extubation (p = 0.002). Generalized estimating equations observed interaction effects on heart rate and blood pressure (both p = 0.000). Mothers' voice might help reduce ED in children under general anesthesia.
