ABSTRACT

Antibiotics in aquatic environments present a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. Activation of carbon-catalyzed persulfate is a prospective approach for oxidizing antibiotics. There is a pressing need for inexpensive carbon catalysts of high quality. In this study, biochar (BC) modified by Fe, Mn and Fe@Mn was employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) in water. The surface of Fe@Mn BC had a dense, stalactite-like morphology comprising a square chassis that was elliptical. The catalyst Fe@Mn-BC possessed the optimal degradation effect (99%) on CBZ at 100 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and the quenching spectrum suggested that ˙O2- and 1O2 contributed to CBZ degradation.

ABSTRACT

In the process of using photocatalysts to treat tetracycline (TC) wastewater, the degradation efficiency of soybean powder carbon material (SPC) can be improved by loading it with cerium oxide (CeO2). In this study, firstly, SPC was modified by phytic acid. Then, the CeO2 was deposited on modified SPC using the self-assembly method. Catalyzed cerium (III) nitrate hexahydrate (CeH3NO4) was treated with alkali and calcined at 600 °C under nitrogen. XRD, XPS, SEM, EDS, UV-VIS /DRS, FTIR, PL and N2 adsorption-desorption methods were used to characterize the crystal structure, chemical composition, morphology, surface physical and chemical properties. The effects of catalyst dosage, monomer contrast, pH value and co-existing anions on TC oxidation degradation were investigated, and the reaction mechanism of a 600 Ce-SPC photocatalytic reaction system was discussed. The results show that the 600 Ce-SPC composite presents uneven gully morphology, which is similar to the natural "briquettes". The degradation efficiency of 600 Ce-SPC reached about 99% at 60 min under light irradiation when the optimal catalyst dosage and pH were 20 mg and 7. Meanwhile, the reusability of the 600 Ce-SPC samples showed good stability and catalytic activity after four cycles.

ABSTRACT

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effect of sulfotanshinone sodium injection combined with tirofiban on vascular endothelial function and indicators of plaque stability in elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS: We designed a prospective study and enrolled 169 patients with ACS who were admitted to our hospital as subjects. Patients treated with sulfotanshinone sodium injection combined with tirofiban (n = 99) were allocated to the research group (RG), and the remaining patients treated with tirofiban alone were allocated to the control group (n = 70; CG). The two groups were compared in terms of treatment efficacy, adverse reactions, vascular endothelial function, changes in plaque stability indicator levels, prognosis, recurrence rate, and quality of life after the treatment. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Treatment response rate, SOD and ET-1 levels, and quality-of-life score were markedly lower in RG than in CG (all P < .05). The incidence of adverse reactions; levels of CD63p, CD62p and GP IIb/IIIa; changes in plaque stability indicator levels; and recurrence rate were markedly higher in RG than in CG (all P < .05). There was no significant difference in 3-year survival rate between the two groups (P > .05). WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Compared with tirofiban alone, sulfotanshinone sodium injection combined with tirofiban had superior efficacy and safety in the treatment of ACS. It can effectively reduce recurrence rate and improve quality of life in ACS, making it a strong candidate for popular clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies showed that brain trauma promotes repair of peripheral nerve injury by reducing scar in nerve endings. The effect of brain injury at different locations on ipsilateral rat sciatic nerve regeneration in Sprague-Dawley rats was found to promote the repair of ipsilateral sciatic nerve injury, thus providing further experimental evidence for the unveiling of traumatic brain injury promoting peripheral nerve regeneration.

ABSTRACT

Both brain injury and tacrolimus have been reported to promote the regeneration of injured peripheral nerves. In this study, before transection of rat sciatic nerve, moderate brain contusion was (or was not) induced. After sciatic nerve injury, tacrolimus, an immunosuppressant, was (or was not) intraperitoneally administered. At 4, 8 and 12 weeks after surgery, Masson's trichrome, hematoxylin-eosin, and toluidine blue staining results revealed that brain injury or tacrolimus alone or their combination alleviated gastrocnemius muscle atrophy and sciatic nerve fiber impairment on the experimental side, simultaneously improved sciatic nerve function, and increased gastrocnemius muscle wet weight on the experimental side. At 8 and 12 weeks after surgery, brain injury induction and/or tacrolimus treatment increased action potential amplitude in the sciatic nerve trunk. Horseradish peroxidase retrograde tracing revealed that the number of horseradish peroxidase-positive neurons in the anterior horn of the spinal cord was greatly increased. Brain injury in combination with tacrolimus exhibited better effects on repair of injured peripheral nerves than brain injury or tacrolimus alone. This result suggests that brain injury in combination with tacrolimus promotes repair of peripheral nerve injury.

ABSTRACT

Injury severity, operative technique and nerve regeneration are important factors to consider when constructing a model of peripheral nerve injury. Here, we present a novel peripheral nerve injury model and compare it with the complete sciatic nerve transection method. In the experimental group, under a microscope, a 3-mm longitudinal incision was made in the epineurium of the sciatic nerve to reveal the nerve fibers, which were then transected. The small, longitudinal incision in the epineurium was then sutured closed, requiring no stump anastomosis. In the control group, the sciatic nerve was completely transected, and the epineurium was repaired by anastomosis. At 2 and 4 weeks after surgery, Wallerian degeneration was observed in both groups. In the experimental group, at 8 and 12 weeks after surgery, distinct medullary nerve fibers and axons were observed in the injured sciatic nerve. Regular, dense myelin sheaths were visible, as well as some scarring. By 12 weeks, the myelin sheaths were normal and intact, and a tight lamellar structure was observed. Functionally, limb movement and nerve conduction recovered in the injured region between 4 and 12 weeks. The present results demonstrate that longitudinal epineural incision with nerve transection can stably replicate a model of Sunderland grade IV peripheral nerve injury. Compared with the complete sciatic nerve transection model, our method reduced the difficulties of micromanipulation and surgery time, and resulted in good stump restoration, nerve regeneration, and functional recovery.

ABSTRACT

An unprecedented cascade strategy, used in conjunction with a redox isomerization, for the synthesis of 3-allyl pyrroles is reported. In a single step, readily accessible simple starting materials are transformed into highly substituted pyrroles with high efficiency. The products obtained contain allyl substituents, which can be readily elaborated to other useful functional groups. The reaction proceeds through an unusual (3 + 2) cycloaddition/skeletal rearrangement/redox isomerization pathway.
