ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Metanephric adenoma is a rare benign renal tumor of the kidney, uncommonly observed in children. It is often misdiagnosed preoperatively as a malignant neoplasm, leading to an unnecessary nephrectomy. The challenge is to make the right diagnosis preoperatively and therefore manage it with conservative surgery. We report a case of a child with metanephric adenoma who underwent nephron-sparing surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A renal tumor was discovered fortuitously in an 18-month-old Caucasian girl with several congenital malformations. Investigations showed a 28 × 27 × 27 mm left renal mass centrally located, well defined, nonvascularized, with no calcifications and which compressed the adjacent renal tissue. Furthermore, there were no signs of metastasis. The decision of a multidisciplinary meeting was to perform a computed tomography (CT)-scan-guided biopsy. Histologic examination concluded it was a metanephric adenoma. We performed a left open partial nephrectomy via a flank retroperitoneal incision. The final histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. The postoperative course was uneventful. CONCLUSION: Preoperative diagnosis of metanephric adenoma is challenging. Because of the high probability of unnecessary radical nephrectomy, preoperative biopsy can be safe and determining to guide a more conservative approach so nephron-sparing surgery can be performed.

ABSTRACT

Disseminated lymphangiomatosis is a congenital lymphovenous vascular malformation. It can occur in different regions, some of which are unusual. The treatment of this vascular malformation is based on surgical excision, sclerotherapy, or recombinant interferon therapy. We report the case of disseminated lymphangiomatosis in a 13-year-old girl who presented with anemia.

ABSTRACT

This work describes the use of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) for the immobilisation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) on insulator/semiconductor solid supports. Different LDHs have been synthesised by a co-precipitation method. Afterwards, biohybrid materials based on AChE-LDH mixtures have been produced using wild and recombinant enzymes. Spectroscopic techniques have confirmed the LDH phase identity and the links created between the LDH and AChE. Spectrophotometric assays have demonstrated that most of the biohybrid materials are functional and stable. Several configurations have been used for AChE immobilisation. The highest catalytic responses have been observed when using wild enzyme and immobilising AChE-LDH mixtures on LDHs previously deposited on the solid supports. LDHs have been demonstrated to be suitable host matrices for AChE immobilisation on electrodes for the subsequent development of electrochemical biosensors.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we present the development of a hybrid biomembrane based on the immobilization of diamine oxidase (DAO) into LDH thin films for histamine detection. The LDHs preselected as host matrixes are: hydrotalcites (Mg2Al(CO3)0.5(OH)6), lowaite (Mg4Fe(OH)10Cl) and hydrocalumite (Ca2Al(OH)6Cl). The immobilized probes were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (IR-ATR mode). The analysis of these results shows that the immobilization of DAO occurs with all type of selected LDH and is stable after a 7 day-immersion in phosphate buffer solution. The LDH incorporating magnesium or calcium divalent cations present high-quality surface topology for DAO immobilization and the ability to keep the enzyme in a well conformation for biogenic amines catabolism and histamine detection.
