ABSTRACT

Challenges and issues related to the use of pentobarbital euthanasia and disposal of animal remains within the US have recently been reviewed. Environmental and public health challenges increasingly necessitate consideration of alternative methods such as gunshots, an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) "acceptable with conditions" method, for the humane euthanasia of horses. A recent study reported a correctly aimed gunshot provides a humane option for euthanizing horses. However, although aiming guidelines exist, studies examining bullet trajectories in animals euthanized by gunshot have reported that inadequate disruption of the brain is a serious welfare issue. Here, we report the development and production of a portable, reusable, equine gunshot euthanasia training model. Using 3D printing, an anatomically accurate model of an equine head has been developed, with external aiming landmarks and equipped with integrated laser sensors and LED eyes. The laser sensors are embedded in two specific anatomical tracts (pons and medulla) with aiming paths associated with the aiming landmarks to train correct aiming angle. The LED eyes are linked to the laser sensors to provide instant feedback on aiming accuracy. When a beam from a commercially available blue training gun laser travels along the correct aiming path and strikes the sensor inside the head, the lights in the model's eyes go out and there is an audible signal, providing immediate feedback on the accuracy of the shot. The model facilitates the training of veterinary personnel and first responders in successful gunshot euthanasia, providing instantaneous feedback on the likelihood of a shot causing immediate, humane death in a live animal.

ABSTRACT

Recently, a novel gammaherpesvirus, miroungine gammaherpesvirus 3 (MirGHV3), was described in two juvenile elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. We developed and validated a quantitative (q)PCR for rapid detection of MirGHV3 and investigated its potential association with lymphoma. We developed a duplex probe-hybridization qPCR with MirGHV3 DNA polymerase (pol) as the target gene. Each primer-probe combination was cross-validated against the others. Interference was not seen when they were run in the same well as a duplex assay. Twenty-three samples from seven northern elephant seals were tested using the duplex assay. Viral DNA was detected by the assay in 9 of 9 (100%) tissues affected by lymphoma and in 6 of 14 (43%) samples from tissues unaffected by lymphoma. There was a strong correlation between viral copies detected with each of the assays (P=0.0002). Viral load was significantly higher in tissues affected by lymphoma than in those unaffected (P<0.0001). Excluding the virus-negative samples, viral load was still significantly higher in tissues affected by lymphoma than in those unaffected (P=0.0004). This is consistent with a potential role of MirGHV3 in oncogenesis in northern elephant seals, although more studies are needed to determine this definitively. The qPCR developed has utility for further investigations of MirGHV3.

ABSTRACT

This report documents cases of fatal pulmonary mycosis caused by entomopathogenic fungi in the genera Metarhizium and Beauveria (Order Hypocreales) in a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), a Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis), two gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus), a Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus), a false gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii), a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), and a Kemp's ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii), and a case of granulomatous coelomitis in a hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Fungi identified in these cases included Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria brongniartii, Metarhizium anisopliae, Metarhizium robertsii, and one case of infection by a novel Metarhizium species. The animals were either housed at zoos or brought into rehabilitation from the wild. Although the majority of animals had comorbidities, the fungal infections were believed to be the primary cause of death. Fungal susceptibility testing was performed on two Beauveria spp. isolates, and revealed lower minimum inhibitory concentrations for itraconazole and voriconazole when compared to terbinafine and fluconazole. This case series demonstrates that a variety of reptile species from different orders are vulnerable to infection with Metarhizium, and multiple species of sea turtle are susceptible to infection with Beauveria.

ABSTRACT

An increase in cases of metabolic bone disease (MBD) in chicks of six species of heron and egret (family Ardeidae) was identified at a wildlife rehabilitation center in the spring and summer of 2018. The outbreak affected 34.3% of birds in care for four or more days during the first 3 mo of the study and was the most common reason for euthanasia during that time. Cases were characterized by lameness, increased flexibility of multiple long bones, angular deformities, and bone fractures. Gross postmortem examinations were conducted on 145 nestlings and fledglings that died or were euthanatized either because of MBD or for unrelated conditions. Histology was performed in four cases and three controls. Histologic findings were characterized by multiple lesions in the appendicular long bones, including variable elongation of the physis, retention of cartilage cores in the metaphyseal primary spongiosa, poorly mineralized osteoid seams within the primary spongiosa, thinning or lack of diaphyseal cortical bone compaction, and folding fractures typically propagating through the physis-metaphyseal interface. Folding fractures were often associated with focal metaphyseal fibroplasia. The parathyroid gland diameter of birds diagnosed postmortem with MBD in care was significantly larger than that of unaffected birds. The authors hypothesized that a dietary deficiency of vitamin D3 because of low levels in the bird's captive diet of capelin (Mallotus villosus) was the cause of the MBD. Starting in mid-July every chick's diet was supplemented with 714 IU oral vitamin D3/kg body weight per day, after which the number of birds developing MBD declined to a rate of 4.3%. This study characterizes the clinical, gross, radiographic, and histologic features of vitamin D3-responsive MBD in young herons and egrets and provides evidence to support the recommendation that captive birds on a diet of capelin be supplemented with vitamin D3, especially during growth.

ABSTRACT

Because of concerns regarding potential adverse effects of meloxicam in pelicans reported by several zoos and wildlife rehabilitation facilities, this study was undertaken to determine the pharmacokinetics of a single oral dose of meloxicam in brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis). A pilot study was performed with 6 apparently healthy wild adult brown pelicans of unknown sex during rehabilitation, administered a single oral dose of meloxicam at 0.2 mg/kg. Plasma drug concentrations were monitored for 24 hours but failed to capture the elimination phase of the drug. Consequently, a principal study monitored plasma concentrations for 120 hours. Six additional adult wild brown pelicans, 3 males and 3 females, approaching releasable condition in rehabilitation were split into 3 groups and each orally administered 0.2 mg/kg meloxicam. Blood samples were collected at baseline and at 4 additional time points that differed between groups. Plasma concentrations were measured with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The mean maximum plasma concentration was 1.22 µg/mL and was achieved at 24 hours after drug administration. The elimination half-life was 36.3 hours, the longest reported to date for any avian species. Further studies are needed to determine the pharmacokinetics of multiple doses of meloxicam and other routes of administration, as well as the pharmacodynamics and safety profile of meloxicam in brown pelicans. On the basis of the results of these investigations, caution is advised when dosing brown pelicans with meloxicam until more studies are completed. By extrapolation, close taxonomic relatives in the order Pelecaniformes may also warrant additional studies.

ABSTRACT

Stranded and recumbent equids often require emergency rescue, and a successful rescue often requires vertical lifting of the animal. Currently, the devices used for vertical lifting of equids are not readily available at an incident or urgent situation. The current study describes and evaluates the use of a simple lift device utilizing commercially available, and reasonably priced, equipment. The system, referred to as the Loop Vertical Lift System or Loops System, is basically composed of four round slings placed in such a way that utilizes the skeletal system for support. The study demonstrates the lifting of six standing, sedated adult horses for 3 min without adverse effects. In conclusion, this novel lift system is an affordable, practical and quick alternative to rescue a stranded or recumbent horse that requires a brief vertical lift of the animal. In contrast, for longer-term lifting and support, other devices such as the UC Davis Large Animal Lift, the Anderson Sling Support Device, or the Animal Rescue and Transport Sling (ARTS) should be used as deemed appropriate.

ABSTRACT

Entrapped, stranded and recumbent equids often require emergency rescue. The success of the rescue is often affected by secondary injuries from struggling of the horse to rise and from injury secondary to attempted rescue by pulling on the head or limbs of the equid. Therefore, having ready access to simplified rescue equipment which can be easily applied would be desirable. The devices currently available for these manipulations are not always readily available at the site of an incident. Here, we describe and illustrate the step-by-step use of a Loops System consisting of 183 cm round slings, which can be positioned on the recumbent horse utilizing commercially available and reasonably priced equipment. The Loops System is basically composed of four round slings placed in such a way that utilizes the skeletal system for support. The procedures are illustrated utilizing a recumbent life-size horse model or mannequin. We suggest that the Loops System kit may allow enhanced ability for responders to provide care to a recumbent horse.
