ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: With the increasing attention to bruxism, the research on bruxism is increasing rapidly. However, there is still a lack of systematic bibliometric analysis in the field of bruxism in adults. This study aimed to comprehensively explore and visualize the global trends and research hotspots in the field of bruxism in adults during 1991-2021. METHODS: The study searched the literature published during 1991-2021 in the Web of Science Core Collection database without language restrictions. VOSviewer, CiteSpace and Microsoft Excel were applied to analyse the authors, institutions, journals, countries, cited references, keywords and other information of the included publications, and construct visualized cooperation networks. RESULTS: A total of 878 articles were finally included. The top two most productive authors in the past 30 years were Lobbezoo F and Manfredini D. ACTA-Amsterdam, Univ Sao Paulo, Univ Helsinki, Univ Padua, Univ Montreal, et al. were prominent institutions in this field. Journal of Oral Rehabilitation made outstanding contributions in this field. The United States produced the most documents in this field, followed by Brazil. Both countries and authors cooperated closely around the world. The two most cited articles focused on the definition, assessment and classification of bruxism. In recent years, diagnostic criteria and stress have begun to receive a lot of attention. CONCLUSION: From 1991 to 2021, the attention to bruxism in adults continued to increase. Diagnostic criteria and stress may be potential research hotspots in this field. This study references relevant scholars on development trends and research hotspots.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and emotional distress (ED), including anxiety and depression, in orthodontic patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 603 orthodontic patients, consisting of 401 females (66.5%) with a mean age of 24.15 ± 7.72 and 202 males (33.5%) with a mean age of 24.16 ± 7.72. A questionnaire containing questions of demographic information, the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and the Huaxi emotional-distress index (HEI) was employed to assess OHRQoL and ED. According to the HEI score, the respondents were divided into ED group (HEI > 8) and non-ED group (HEI ≤ 8). Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Mann-Whitney test and logistic regression analysis with the significance level set at p < 0.05. Results: The prevalence of poor OHRQoL and ED of the study sample was 28.4% and 19.57%, respectively. There was a significantly higher prevalence of ED among poor OHRQoL patients (35.67%) compared to those with good OHRQoL (13.19%) (p < 0.001). Poor OHRQoL and risky drinking behavior addressed higher significant correlation with ED patients than non-ED patients (p < 0.05). There were no statistical differences in other factors such as gender, age, and appliance type (p > 0.05). Poor OHRQoL orthodontic patients were at a higher risk of suffering from anxiety and depression compared to those with good OHRQoL (age-risky drinking behavior-sex-adjusted: OR = 4.00; all p < 0.001). Conclusion: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is related to emotional stress. Namely, patients with poor OHRQoL are more likely to experience anxiety and depression. As a result, orthodontists should consistently assess the emotional well-being and OHROoL of patients over the treatment course for better treatment outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study conducted a bibliometric analysis that comprehensively described publications on temporomandibular joint and occlusion from 1 January 2000 to 31 October 2022, aiming to reveal hotspots and predict future research trends. Methods: A total of 2985 articles and reviews were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Excel 2019, VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were used for visualizing analysis of research trends, authors, journals, institutions, countries, keywords and cited references. Results: Both the annual publication counts and citation times increased significantly. Wang MQ was the most active author. Moreover, Manfredini D and Okeson JP were the most influential two. Journal of Oral Rehabilitation was the core journal. University of Sao Paulo was the most productive institutions. "Temporomandibular disorders" (TMDs), "temporomandibular joint" and "occlusion" were the top 3 keywords with the most frequencies. Keywords and references with burst showed that the causes of TMDs, diagnosis and treatments for TMDs as well as bruxism may be hotspots currently and in the future. Conclusion: In this study, the research trends, the most productive and influential authors, journals, institutions, countries, in addition to keywords and cited references with burst in the field of temporomandibular joint and occlusion were revealed by a bibliometric analysis, which could help scholars to understand recent hotspots and future trends.

ABSTRACT

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis causes fibrocartilage damage to the TMJ disc and mandibular condyle, resulting in local pain and functional impairment that further reduces patients' quality of life. Tissue engineering offers a potential treatment for fibrocartilage regeneration of the TMJ disc and mandibular condyle. However, the heterogeneous structure of TMJ fibrocartilage tissue poses significant challenges for the fabrication of biomimetic scaffolds. Over the past two decades, some researchers have attempted to adopt three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques to fabricate biomimetic scaffolds for TMJ fibrocartilage regeneration, but publications on such attempts are limited and rarely report satisfactory results, indicating an urgent need for further development. This review outlines several popular 3D printing techniques and the significant elements of tissue-engineered scaffolds: seed cells, scaffold materials, and bioactive factors. Current research progress on 3D-printed scaffolds for fibrocartilage regeneration of the TMJ disc and mandibular condyle is reviewed. The current challenges in TMJ tissue engineering are mentioned along with some emerging tissue-engineering strategies, such as machine learning, stimuli-responsive delivery systems, and extracellular vesicles, which are considered as potential approaches to improve the performance of 3D-printed scaffolds for TMJ fibrocartilage regeneration. This review is expected to inspire the further development of 3D printing techniques for TMJ fibrocartilage regeneration.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the anterior and posterior occlusal plane characteristics of patients with different temporomandibular joint osseous statuses. METHODS: A total of 306 patients with initial cone beam CT (CBCT) and cephalograms were included. They were divided into three groups on the basis of their temporomandibular joint osseous status: bilateral normal (BN) group, indeterminate for osteoarthrosis (I) group, and osteoarthrosis (OA) group. The anterior and posterior occlusal planes (AOP and POP) of the different groups were compared. Then, the regression equation was established after adjusting for confounding factors, and a correlation analysis between the occlusion planes and other parameters was performed. RESULTS: SNA, SNB, FMA, SN-MP, Ar-Go, and S-Go were correlated with the occlusal planes. Relative to the BN and I groups, the FH-OP of the OA group increased by 1.67° on the average, FH-POP increased by 1.42° on the average, and FH-AOP increased by 2.05° on the average. CONCLUSIONS: The occlusal planes were steeper in the patients with temporomandibular osteoarthrosis than in the patients without it, and the mandible rotated downward and backward. The height of the mandibular ramus, the mandibular body length, and the posterior face height were small. In clinical practice, attention should be given to the potential risk of temporomandibular joint osteoarthrosis in such patients. In addition, SNB, FMA, SN-MP, Ar-Go, S-Go, and occlusal planes had moderate correlations.

BACKGROUND: Some orthodontic patients are associated with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), and the differences between jaw function and psychological states in orthodontic patients with different types of TMDs remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the prevalence of different types of TMDs in orthodontic patients and to evaluate the relationship between different types of TMDs and jaw functional limitation and psychological distress in orthodontic patients. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to patients willing to participate in this survey, which included questions about the demographic characteristics of the participants, the five TMD symptoms (5Ts) of the Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs, the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-8 (JFLS-8) and the Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (PHQ-4). The subjects were divided into three groups: painful TMDs (PT), non-painful TMDs (NPT), and TMD-free according to whether they had TMDs and its subtypes. RESULTS: A total of 670 valid questionnaires were collected from 182 males and 488 females. The prevalence of TMDs was 35.4%, of which the prevalence of PT was 11.8% and the prevalence of NPT was 23.6%. The median JLFS-8 score of TMD patients was significantly higher than TMD-free, and PT patients were significantly higher than NPT (p = .026). After adjusting for confounding factors, the jaw function and psychological states of PT patients and NPT patients were worse than those of the TMD-free group. CONCLUSIONS: Among the orthodontic patients surveyed, more than one-third had TMDs and the prevalence of PT was lower than NPT. Having TMDs is associated with more severe jaw functional limitation, and PT patients were more serious than NPT patients. At the same time, the psychological states of TMDs patients were also worse.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the treatment effects of five bone-anchored maxillary protraction protocols (BAC3E, BAMP, BARME-FM, BARME-ME, SAFM) for skeletal Class III malocclusion. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search through CENTRAL, EBSCO, PubMed and Web of Science and included the randomized controlled trials and clinical controlled trials, which met the criteria. A Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) for SNA, SNB, ANB, SN-MP and Wits appraisal was performed in R software using a random consistency model. The additional analyses included node-splitting analysis, statistical heterogeneity analysis, sensitivity analysis and ranking probability by SUCRA. RESULTS: A total of 598 articles were initially obtained; 13 articles involving 482 individuals were eventually included. Among the five bone-anchored maxillary protraction protocols, the largest increment in SNA and Wits appraisal was observed in the BAMP group and BAC3E group, respectively; the SAFM, BAC3E and BAMP groups showed similar capability in terms of changes of ANB; least clockwise rotation of the mandible was found in the BARME-ME group, followed by the BAMP group; dental compensation appears to be most pronounced in the BAC3E group; and intermaxillary traction seems to reduce the lingual inclination of lower incisors and even cause labial inclination. CONCLUSIONS: The SAFM, BAMP and BAC3E groups seem to be advantageous in the improvement of the maxillo-mandibular relationship, followed by the BARME-FM and BARME-ME groups. The findings of this study should be interpreted with caution as only short-term effects were compared and the quality of evidence ranged from very low to moderate. More RCTs with high-quality and long-term investigation are needed.

Background: With rapid development in molecular biology techniques and a greater understanding of cancer pathogenesis, the growing attention has been concentrated on cancer gene therapy, with numerous articles on this topic published in recent 5 years. However, there is lacking a bibliometric analysis of research on cancer gene therapy. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis to provide the trends and frontiers of research on cancer gene therapy during 2016-2020. Methods: We utilized CiteSpace 5.7.R5 software to conduct a bibliometric analysis of publications on cancer gene therapy published during 2016-2020. The bibliometric records were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. Results: A total of 4,392 papers were included in the bibliometric analysis. Materials Science and Nanoscience and Nanotechnology took an increasing part in the field of cancer gene therapy. Additionally, WANG W was the most productive author, while ZHANG Y ranked top in terms of citations. Harvard Medical School and Sichuan University ranked top in the active institutions. P NATL ACAD SCI USA was identified as the core journal in the field of cancer gene therapy. "Ovarian cancer" was found to be the latest keyword with the strongest burst. The keyword analysis suggested that the top three latest clusters were labeled "gene delivery," "drug delivery," and "gene therapy." In the reference analysis, cluster#2 labeled "gene delivery" held a dominant place considering both the node volume and mean year. Conclusion: The academic attention on cancer gene therapy was growing at a dramatically high speed. Materials Science and Nanoscience and Nanotechnology might become promising impetus for the development of this field. "Gene delivery" was thought to best reflect the research frontier on cancer gene therapy. The top-cited articles on gene delivery were focused on several novel non-viral vectors due to their specialty compared with viral vectors. "Ovarian cancer" was likely to be the potential research direction. These findings would help medical workers conduct further investigations on cancer gene therapy.

Objective: Microorganisms play a key role in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. Research studies have focused on seeking specific microorganisms for diagnosing and monitoring the outcome of periodontitis treatment. Large samples may help to discover novel potential biomarkers and capture the common characteristics among different periodontitis patients. This study examines how to screen and merge high-quality periodontitis-related sequence datasets from several similar projects to analyze and mine the potential information comprehensively. Methods: In all, 943 subgingival samples from nine publications were included based on predetermined screening criteria. A uniform pipeline (QIIME2) was applied to clean the raw sequence datasets and merge them together. Microbial structure, biomarkers, and correlation network were explored between periodontitis and healthy individuals. The microbiota patterns at different periodontal pocket depths were described. Additionally, potential microbial functions and metabolic pathways were predicted using PICRUSt to assess the differences between health and periodontitis. Results: The subgingival microbial communities and functions in subjects with periodontitis were significantly different from those in healthy subjects. Treponema, TG5, Desulfobulbus, Catonella, Bacteroides, Aggregatibacter, Peptostreptococcus, and Eikenella were periodontitis biomarkers, while Veillonella, Corynebacterium, Neisseria, Rothia, Paludibacter, Capnocytophaga, and Kingella were signature of healthy periodontium. With the variation of pocket depth from shallow to deep pocket, the proportion of Spirochaetes, Bacteroidetes, TM7, and Fusobacteria increased, whereas that of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria decreased. Synergistic relationships were observed among different pathobionts and negative relationships were noted between periodontal pathobionts and healthy microbiota. Conclusion: This study shows significant differences in the oral microbial community and potential metabolic pathways between the periodontitis and healthy groups. Our integrated analysis provides potential biomarkers and directions for in-depth research. Moreover, a new method for integrating similar sequence data is shown here that can be applied to other microbial-related areas.

INTRODUCTION: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) means oral epithelial cell injury caused by multiple genetic mutations of the cells. Dysregulation of microRNAs (miRs) can disrupt the progression of OSCC. This study explored the mechanism of miR-130a in OSCC progression. METHODS: miR-130a expression in OSCC cell lines was analyzed. Functional assays were utilized to test the alterations of OSCC cell proliferation, apoptosis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) with downregulated miR-130a, shRNA-PTEN or/and YAP inhibitor verteporfin. Then, dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was performed to clarify the targeting relation between miR-130a and PTEN. After that, Hippo-YAP pathway-related protein levels were tested. Moreover, xenograft transplantation was applied to confirm the in vitro experiments. RESULTS: Highly expressed miR-130a was observed in OSCC cell lines. Silenced miR-130a reduced OSCC proliferation, metastasis, invasion and EMT while propelled apoptosis. Furthermore, miR-130a targeted PTEN to promote the OSCC progression. Downregulation of PTEN reversed the inhibition of silencing miR-130a on proliferation and migration of SCC-4 cells. miR-130a targeted PTEN to inactivate the Hippo-YAP axis. OSCC progression was notably promoted by a combination of YAP inhibitor verteporfin and miR-130a inhibitor. Additionally, silenced miR-130a inhibited OSCC progression in vivo. DISCUSSION: Silencing miR-130a inhibited OSCC progression by targeting PTEN and activating the Hippo-YAP axis. This investigation may provide novel insight for OSCC treatment.

Cancer Cachexia (CC) is a disease that changes various metabolisms in human body. Fat metabolism is significantly affected in CC, leading to fat loss. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in adipocytes and exosomes secreted by tumor play an important role in fat loss. However, there is no related reviews summarizing how ncRNAs contribute to fat loss during CC. This review screens recent articles to summarize how ncRNAs are packaged, transported in exosomes, and play the role in fat loss. Not only does this review summarize the mechanisms, we also point out the research orientations in the future.

ABSTRACT

Neck dissection for oral squamous-cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a clinically controversial issue and has therefore been the subject of abundant research. However, no one has performed a bibliometric study on this topic to date. The aim of this study was to assess the development of research on neck dissection for OSCC in terms of the historical evolution, current hotspots and future directions, particularly including research trends and frontiers from 2010 to 2019. Literature records related to research on neck dissection for OSCC were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). CiteSpace was used as a tool to perform a bibliometric analysis of this topic. The survey included 2 096 papers. "Otorhinolaryngology" was the most popular research area. The most active institutions and countries were Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the USA, respectively. Shah J.P. was the most cited author. Among the six identified "core journals", Head & Neck ranked first. The top three trending keywords were 'invasion', 'upper aerodigestive' and 'negative neck'. 'D'Cruz AK (2015)' was the most cited and the strongest burst reference in the last decade. The study evaluated the effect on survival of elective versus therapeutic neck dissection in patients with lateralized early-stage OSCC. The depth of invasion and the management of N0 OSCC were research frontiers in this field. The present study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research on neck dissection for OSCC, which will assist investigators in exploring potential research directions.

ABSTRACT

Cancer cachexia (CC) is a complex metabolic syndrome that accelerates muscle wasting and affects up to 80% of patients with cancer; however, timely diagnostic methods and effective cures are lacking. Although a considerable number of studies have focused on the mechanism of CC-induced muscle atrophy, few novel therapies have been applied in the last decade. In recent years, noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) have attracted great attention as many differentially expressed ncRNAs in cancer cachectic muscles have been reported to participate in the inhibition of myogenesis and activation of proteolysis. In addition, extracellular vesicles (EVs), which function as ncRNA carriers in intercellular communication, are closely involved in changing ncRNA expression profiles in muscle and promoting the development of muscle wasting; thus, EV-related ncRNAs may represent potential therapeutic targets. This review comprehensively describes the process of ncRNA transmission through EVs and summarizes the pathways and targets of ncRNAs that lead to CC-induced muscle atrophy.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Tao Hong Si Wu Decoction (THSWD) is a traditional prescription for blood management in traditional Chinese medicine, THSWD consists of Paeoniae Radix Alba (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) DC.), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Conioselinum anthriscoides 'Chuanxiong'), Persicae Seman (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) and Carthami Flos (Carthamus tinctorius L.) at a weight ratio of 3: 4: 3: 2: 3: 2. THSWD is a commonly used prescription in the treatment of postpartum blood stasis disease. AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore the potential mechanism of THSWD for the treatment of postpartum blood stasis using network pharmacology and experimental research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We extracted the active ingredients and targets in THSWD from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP), and constructed a herbs-ingredients-targets-disease-network, devised a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, performed GO enrichment analysis, and performed Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis to discover potential treatment mechanisms. A postpartum blood stasis model was established in rats, and the results of network pharmacology were verified by in vivo experiments. RESULTS: The results showed that 69 potential active ingredients and 207 THSWD target genes for the treatment of postpartum blood stasis disease were obtained after ADME filtering analysis. The targets were enriched in multiple gene functions and different signaling pathways. By exploring various different signaling pathways, it was found that mitochondrial regulation of oxidative stress plays a potentially important role in the treatment of postpartum blood stasis with THSWD. Compared to model group, THSWD alleviated mitochondrial damage, decreased levels of oxidative stress in the rat model of postpartum blood stasis and reduced apoptosis in uterine cells. CONCLUSION: The therapeutic effect of THSWD on postpartum blood stasis is likely related to mitochondrial regulation of oxidative stress, which paves the way for further research investigating its mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) represents oral epithelial cell damage. Myeloblastosis (MYB) is involved in OTSCC. This study tried to probe roles of MYB in OSCC with potential axis. METHODS: Expression of MYB and miR-130a in OTSCC was detected. Western blot analysis was utilized to determine epithelial-mesenchymal transition-related protein levels. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay certified the target relation between miR-130a and CYLD. Moreover, xenograft tumors in nude mice were applied to confirm the in vitro experiments. RESULTS: Both MYB and miR-130a were highly expressed in OTSCC, which promoted cell growth. Meanwhile, silenced miR-130a discouraged cell development enhanced by overexpressed MYB. CYLD was poorly expressed in OTSCC and targeted by miR-130a. Additionally, MYB knockdown activated CYLD to suppress OTSCC by downregulating miR-130a. CONCLUSION: Our experiment supported that silenced MYB suppressed OTSCC malignancy by inhibiting miR-130a and activating CYLD. This investigation may provide novel insights for OTSCC treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Taohong Siwu decoction (THSWD) is one of the classic prescriptions for promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and it has a good therapeutic effect on ischemic stroke. We sought to explore the therapeutic effects of THSWD on pyroptosis in rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion-reperfusion (MCAO/R). Methods: MCAO/R model of rats were established by suture-occluded method. MCAO/R rats were randomly divided into five groups, which were model group, nimodipine group, THSWD high, medium and low dose group (18, 9, and 4.5 g/kg, respectively), rats of sham group without thread embolus. All rats were treated by intragastric administration for 7 days. We detected the level of inflammatory factors. NLRP3 and Caspase-1 were detected by immunofluorescence. Western blot was used to detect NLRP3, Caspase-1, ASC, and GSDMD in penumbra. Also, the expression of TXNIP, HMGB1, toll-like receptors (TLR4), NF-κB, and MAPK were detected. Results: THSWD treatment improved the behavioral function and brain pathological damage. These results showed that the levels of TNF-α, TGF-ß, IL-2, IL-6, IL-1ß, and IL-18 were significantly reduced in THSWD treatment groups. THSWD could significantly decrease the expression levels of NLRP3, Caspase-1, Caspase-1 p10, ASC, TXNIP, GSDMD, HMGB1, TLR4/NFκB, p38 MAPK, and JNK in penumbra. Conclusion: Our results showed that THSWD could reduce the activation level of NLRP3 inflammatory corpuscle, down-regulate GSDMD, and inhibit pyroptosis in MCAO/R rats. These may be affected by inhibiting HMGB1/TLR4/NFκB, MAPK signaling pathways.
