ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Mental health has become a significant public health problem that impacts both economic and social development, with severe mental disorders (SMDs) being the top priority. Over recent years, Beijing, China, has introduced several policies to reduce the economic burden on patients with mental health disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the current status and composition of patients' medical expenses following the introduction of multiple medical policies, explore the factors that may impact the utilisation of medical services and provide a reference and basis for subsequent policy improvements. STUDY DESIGN: Multistage sampling was used to select a representative study population. A retrospective survey was used to collect patient information and data on medical expenses in 2019. METHODS: Descriptive statistics were applied to analyse the current status of patients' medical expenses, and a two-part model was used to examine the factors influencing healthcare utilisation and to model predicted expenses. RESULTS: Among 4940 participants, the average outpatient expenses of patients with SMD who incurred medical expenses were 8373.61 Yuan, and the average hospitalisation expenses were 81,594.05 Yuan. The out-of-pocket expenses were 29.22% of outpatient expenses and 8.13% of inpatient expenses. Factors such as age, household status, economic status, marital status, participation in the Community Free-Medication Service (CFMS) and the type of disease diagnosed influenced the differences in medical expenses and utilisation of services. CONCLUSIONS: The medical expenses of patients with SMD in Beijing are high, but a number of introduced policies have effectively reduced these costs for patients. Future studies should focus on the impact of factors such as age, economic status, participation in the CFMS and the type of disease diagnosed on medical expenses.

ABSTRACT

Temozolomide (TMZ) resistance is an important cause of clinical treatment failure and poor prognosis in gliomas. Increasing evidence indicates that cancer-derived exosomes contribute to chemoresistance; however, the specific contribution of glioma-derived exosomes remains unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the role and underlying mechanisms of exosomal macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) on TMZ resistance in gliomas. We first demonstrated that MIF was upregulated in the exosomes of TMZ-resistant cells, engendering the transfer of TMZ resistance to sensitive cells. Our results indicated that exosomal MIF conferred TMZ resistance to sensitive cells through the enhancement of cell proliferation and the repression of cell apoptosis upon TMZ exposure. MIF knockdown enhanced TMZ sensitivity in resistant glioma cells by upregulating Metalloproteinase Inhibitor 3 (TIMP3) and subsequently suppressing the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Additionally, exosomal MIF promoted tumor growth and TMZ resistance of glioma cells in vivo, while IOS-1 (MIF inhibitor) promotes glioma TMZ sensitive in vivo. Taken together, our study demonstrated that exosome-mediated transfer of MIF enhanced TMZ resistance in glioma through downregulating TIMP3 and further activating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, highlighting a prognostic biomarker and promising therapeutic target for TMZ treatment in gliomas.

ABSTRACT

The derived feathering phenotype beard in domestic birds is an ideal resource to investigate the genetic mechanisms controlling feather development and differentiation. In the present study, we performed a GWAS and QTL linkage analysis on the trait of beard in Beijing fatty chicken. One major QTL (1.2-1.9 Mb) was identified that could explain 34% of the phenotypic variation. The copy number variation that was copied from the region (GGA27:3 578 409-3 592 890 bp) containing homebox B7 (HOXB7) and homebox B8 (HOXB8) was validated to be only exhibited in the genome of bearded chickens. Protein-protein interaction analysis indicated that HOXB7 and HOXB8 proteins could highly interact with the HOXB family members, including HOXB4, HOXB5 and HOXB6, whose genomic locations near HOXB7 and HOXB8 suggested that they may regulate their family members to involve in the formation of the beard trait in chickens. Overall, our work provides basic data for understanding the mechanisms regulating beard development and differentiation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the availability, prices and affordability of essential medicines in pediatric population across China, in the hope of improving rational use of medicines. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional survey of medicine prices, availability and affordability was conducted in 17 provinces, municipalities and autonomous region across east, south-central part, west and north of China. Data on 42 medicines used in pediatric population, both original and generic, were collected in 55 public hospitals from May 26 to June 2, 2017. Availability was expressed as the percentage of hospitals with stock of the target medicine on the day of data collection,and median price ratio (MPR) was the ratio of price upon investigation to international reference. Based on national minimum daily wage, affordability represents the number of working days needed to earn the expense which covers a standard course using the target medicine. Statistical software SPSS 13.0 was applied for descriptive analysis of availability, MPR and affordability. Results: Mean Availability of original and generic medicine was 33% and 32%, with median MPR being 5.43 and 1.55. Among the 19 medicines with price information for both original and generic product, the median MPR was 7.73 and 2.04 respectively. Regarding the five medicines used to treat four common pediatric diseases (pneumonia,peptic ulcer, congenital hypothyroidism, refractory nephrotic syndrome), the affordability was 0.63 (0.16-6.17) d for generic medicine, and 1.03 (0.16-11.53) d for its original counterpart. Conclusions: The availability to both original and generic products of the 42 medicines used in pediatric population was low in China. The prices of generic medicines seem to be lower and affordability higher than those of original medicines. There is an urgent need to improve the availability and affordability of pediatric medicines.

ABSTRACT

The mechanism of superconductivity in cuprates remains one of the big challenges of condensed matter physics. High-T c cuprates crystallize into a layered perovskite structure featuring copper oxygen octahedral coordination. Due to the Jahn Teller effect in combination with the strong static Coulomb interaction, the octahedra in high-T c cuprates are elongated along the c axis, leading to a 3dx 2-y 2 orbital at the top of the band structure wherein the doped holes reside. This scenario gives rise to 2D characteristics in high-T c cuprates that favor d-wave pairing symmetry. Here, we report superconductivity in a cuprate Ba2CuO4-y , wherein the local octahedron is in a very exceptional compressed version. The Ba2CuO4-y compound was synthesized at high pressure at high temperatures and shows bulk superconductivity with critical temperature (T c ) above 70 K at ambient conditions. This superconducting transition temperature is more than 30 K higher than the T c for the isostructural counterparts based on classical La2CuO4 X-ray absorption measurements indicate the heavily doped nature of the Ba2CuO4-y superconductor. In compressed octahedron, the 3d3z 2-r 2 orbital will be lifted above the 3dx 2-y 2 orbital, leading to significant 3D nature in addition to the conventional 3dx 2-y 2 orbital. This work sheds important light on advancing our comprehensive understanding of the superconducting mechanism of high T c in cuprate materials.

ABSTRACT

The PrGa compound shows excellent performance on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and magnetoresistance (MR). The physical mechanism of MCE and MR in PrGa compound was investigated and elaborated in detail on the basis of magnetic measurement, heat capacity measurement and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) experiment. New types of magnetic structure and magnetic transition are found. The results of the NPD along with the saturation magnetic moment (MS) and magnetic entropy (SM) indicate that the magnetic moments are randomly distributed within the equivalent conical surface in the ferromagnetic (FM) temperature range. PrGa compound undergoes an FM to FM transition and an FM to paramagnetic (PM) transition as temperature increases. The magnetizing process was discussed in detail and the physical mechanism of the magnetic field controlled magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and the magnetoresistance (MR) was studied. The formation of the plateau on MCE curve was explained and MR was calculated in detail on the basis of the magnetic structure and the analysis of the magnetizing process. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the calculations. Finally, the expression of MR = ß(T)X(2) and its application conditions were discussed, where X is M(H)/Meff, and Meff is the paramagnetic effective moment.

ABSTRACT

Iron selenide superconductors exhibit a number of unique characteristics that are helpful for understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in high-Tc iron-based superconductors more generally. However, in the case of AxFe2Se2 (A = K, Rb, Cs), the presence of an intergrown antiferromagnetic insulating phase makes the study of the underlying physics problematic. Moreover, FeSe-based systems intercalated with alkali metal ions, NH3 molecules or organic molecules are extremely sensitive to air, which prevents the further investigation of their physical properties. It is therefore desirable to find a stable and easily accessible FeSe-based superconductor to study its physical properties in detail. Here, we report the synthesis of an air-stable material, (Li0.8Fe0.2)OHFeSe, which remains superconducting at temperatures up to ~40 K, by means of a novel hydrothermal method. The crystal structure is unambiguously determined by a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance. Moreover, antiferromagnetic order is shown to coexist with superconductivity. This synthetic route opens a path for exploring superconductivity in other related systems, and confirms the appeal of iron selenides as a platform for understanding superconductivity in iron pnictides more broadly.

ABSTRACT

Acanthus ilicifolius (family Acanthaceae) grows mainly in tropical coastal areas and is an important medicinal plant that can be used to treat asthma, rheumatism, etc. In July 2013, symptoms of black spots on the leaves of A. ilicifolius were observed in the Mangrove Conservation Area of Shenzhen Futian (22°32' N, 114°03' E) and Leizhou peninsula (20°12'~21°35' N, 109°30'~110°55' E), Guangdong Province, China. Initial symptoms of the disease were a small, dark brown spots (4 to 5 × 4 to 6 mm) surrounded by a yellow halo (1 to 2 mm in diameter), that would later extend to round or irregular black spots. Leaves eventually turned chlorotic and plants defoliated. Tissues from symptomatic leaves were excised, surface sterilized with 75% ethanol solution (v/v) for 20 s, soaked in 0.1% HgCl2 solution for 45 s, rinsed three times in sterile water, cut into small pieces (2 to 3 mm), plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated 3 to 5 days at 28°C without light. Four isolates named from LSL-1 to LSL-4 with different morphological characteristics were obtained. To fulfill Koch's postulates, wounded and non-wounded leaves were inoculated. Fresh wounds were made with a sterile needle on detached leaves and on living plants. Mycelial plugs of each isolate were applied and covered with a piece of wet cotton to maintain moisture. For the control, the healthy leaves were inoculated with PDA plugs. All treatments were incubated at room temperature. Black spots were observed on the wounded leaves inoculated with isolate LSL-1 after 3 days, while the other three isolates and the control remained symptomless, and the pathogen similar to LSL-1 was re-isolated from the diseased leaves. Non-wounded leaves didn't become infected. The pathogenic test was repeated three times with the same conditions, and it was confirmed that LSL-1 was the pathogen causing the black spot of A. ilicifolius. Identification of the pathogen was conducted using morphological and molecular characteristics. Hyphal tips of LSL-1 were transferred to PDA medium in petri dishes for morphological observation. Two types of conidia were observed. The macroconidia were cylindrical to slightly curved, falciform shaped, with two to four septa, and measured 39 to 45 × 4.7 to 5.0 µm. The microconidia were oval to kidney shaped, single celled, 8 to 10 × 2.5 to 3.5 µm. Chlamydospores were also observed, produced singly or in pairs. Based on morphology (1,4), the isolate was tentatively identified as Fusarium solani. For molecular identification, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of ribosomal DNA, beta-tubulin gene, and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF-1α) gene was amplified using the ITS1/ITS4 (5), ITS4/ITS5 (5), T1/T2 (2) and EF1/EF2 (3) primer pairs. The gene sequences were deposited in GenBank (KJ720639 for the ITS1/ITS4 region, KF826493 for the ITS4/ITS5 region, KJ720638 for the beta-tubulin, and KF826492 for EF-1α region) and showed 99% identity to the F. solani strains (AY633746 for ITS1/ITS4 region, AM412637 for ITS4/ITS5 region, KF255996 for beta-tubulin region, DQ246859 for EF-1α region). According to these results, the pathogen of black spot of A. ilicifolius was identified as F. solani. ABSTRACT

Avicennia marina is a pioneer species of mangroves, a woody plant community that periodically emerges in the intertidal zone of estuarine regions in tropical and subtropical regions. In February 2013, a new disease that caused the stems of A. marina to blacken and die was found in Techeng Island of Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, China. Initial symptoms of the disease were water-soaked brown spots on the biennial stems that coalesced so whole stems browned, twigs and branches withered, leaves defoliated, and finally trees died. This disease has the potential to threaten the ecology of the local A. marina community. From February to May 2013, 11 symptomatic trees were collected in three locations on the island and the pathogen was isolated as followed: tissues were surface disinfected with 75% ethanol solution (v/v) for 20 s, soaked in 0.1% mercuric chloride solution for 45 s, rinsed with sterilized water three times, dried, placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated for 3 to 5 days at 28°C without light. Five isolates (KW1 to KW5) with different morphological characteristics were obtained, and pathogenic tests were done according Koch's postulates. Fresh wounds were made with a sterile needle on healthy biennial stems of A. marina, and mycelial plugs of each isolate were applied and covered with a piece of wet cotton to maintain moisture. All treated plants were incubated at room temperature. Similar symptoms of black stem were observed only on the stems inoculated the isolate KW5 after 35 days, while the control and all stems inoculated with the other isolates remained symptomless. An isolate similar to KW5 was re-isolated from the affected materials. The pathogenic test was repeated three times with the same conditions and it was confirmed that KW5 was the pathogen causing the black stem of A. marina. Hyphal tips of KW5 were transferred to PDA medium in petri dishes for morphological observation. After 48 to 72 h, white, orange, or brown flocculence patches of KW5 mycelium, 5.0 to 6.0 cm in diameter, grew. Tapering and spindle falciform macroconidia (11 to 17.3 µm long × 1.5 to 2.5 µm wide) with an obviously swelled central cell and narrow strips of apical cells and distinctive foot cells were visible under the optical microscope. The conidiogenous cells were intertwined with mycelia and the chlamydospores were globose and formed in clusters. These morphological characteristics of the isolate KW5 are characteristic of Fusarium equiseti (1). For molecular identification, the ITS of ribosomal DNA, ß-tubulin, and EF-1α genes were amplified using the ITS4/ITS5 (5), T1/T2 (2), and EF1/EF2 (3) primer pairs. These sequences were deposited in GenBank (KF515650 for the ITS region; KF747330 for ß-tubulin region, and KF747331 for EF-1α region) and showed 98 to 99% identity to F. equiseti strains (HQ332532 for ITS region, JX241676 for ß-tubulin gene, and GQ505666 for EF-1α region). According to both morphological and sequences analysis, the pathogen of the black stem of A. marina was identified as F. equiseti. Similar symptoms on absorbing rootlets and trunks of A. marina had been reported in central coastal Queensland, but the pathogen was identified as Phytophthora sp. (4). Therefore, the disease reported in this paper differs from that reported in central coastal Queensland. ABSTRACT

We report that Bi doping drives Pr 2-x BixRu2O7 from an antiferromagnetic insulator (x = 0) to a metallic paramagnet (x approximately 1) with a broad low T maximum in C/T. Neutron scattering reveals local low energy spin excitations (variant Planck's omega approximately 1 meV) with a spectrum that is unaffected by heating to k(B)T >> variant Planck's omega. We show that a continuous distribution of splittings of the non-Kramers Pr3+ ground-state doublet such as might result from various types of lattice strain can account for all the data.

ABSTRACT

We present thermodynamic and neutron data on Ni3V2O8, a spin-1 system on a kagomé staircase. The extreme degeneracy of the kagomé antiferromagnet is lifted to produce two incommensurate phases at finite T--one amplitude modulated, the other helical--plus a commensurate canted antiferromagnet for T-->0. The H-T phase diagram is described by a model of competing first and second neighbor interactions with smaller anisotropic terms. Ni3V2O8 thus provides an elegant example of order from subleading interactions in a highly frustrated system.

ABSTRACT

Neutron diffraction in Fe(Al) reveals incommensurate spin density waves (SDWs) in alloys known to be spin glasses. The wave vectors for crystals of Fe(34Al), Fe(40Al), and Fe(43Al) show n varying from 11 to 6 for q-->=2pi(h+/-1/n,k+/-1/n,l+/-1/n)/a(0), where (h,k,l) and a(0) characterize the parent bcc lattice of the CsCl structure. The magnetic reflections are present far above the spin-glass freezing temperatures. These SDWs keep the spins on nearest-neighbor Fe atoms close to parallel, in contrast with SDWs in Cr, which keep nearest-neighbor spins close to antiparallel.

ABSTRACT

An antifungal peptide from seeds of Phytolacca americana, designated PAFP-s, has been isolated. The peptide is highly basic and consists of 38 residues with three disulfide bridges. Its molecular mass of 3929.0 was determined by mass spectrometry. The complete amino acid sequence was obtained from automated Edman degradation, and cDNA cloning was successfully performed by 3'-RACE. The deduced amino acid sequence of a partial cDNA corresponded to the amino acid sequence from chemical sequencing. PAFP-s exhibited a broad spectrum of antifungal activity, and its activities differed among various fungi. PAFP-s displayed no inhibitory activity towards Escherichia coli. PAFP-s shows significant sequence similarities and the same cysteine motif with Mj-AMPs, antimicrobial peptides from seeds of Mirabilis jalapa belonging to the knottin-type antimicrobial peptide.
