ABSTRACT

Major pretibial degloving injuries are complex wounds, which can be challenging to treat. Despite recent advances in reconstructive options, most of these injuries still require a prolonged healing period and may result in amputation. Few reports have been published on the management of these complex traumatic injuries. In this article, we present a case of an octogenarian, frail patient with a major pretibial degloving injury. Treatment included serial surgical debridements in combination with negative pressure wound therapy aimed at salvaging the avulsed tissue. Subsequently, a fenestrated-type artificial dermis and negative pressure wound therapy were used as combined therapy so as to obtain adequate soft tissue coverage. The patient made an unremarkable recovery and was discharged on day 22 after injury. The wound healed by secondary intention without need for skin grafting.

ABSTRACT

The mechanism of the thermal unimolecular decomposition of C3H6 (propene) is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The potential energy surfaces for possible reaction pathways are investigated by CBS-QB3 level of quantum chemical calculations, and RRKM/master-equation calculation is performed for the main channels. The time evolutions of H atoms are observed experimentally by using a highly sensitive detection technique (ARAS, detection limit ≈ 10(11) atoms cm(-3)) behind reflected shock waves (0.5-1.0 ppm C3H6 diluted in Ar, 1450-1710 K at 2.0 atm). The objective of this study is to examine the main product channels by combining the experimental and theoretical investigations on the yield and the rates of H atom production. Present quantum chemical calculations identify reactions (1a-1d) as the candidates of product channels: C3H6 → aC3H5 (allyl radical) + H (1a), C3H6 → CH3 + C2H3 (vinyl radical) (1b), C3H6 → CH4 + :CCH2 (singlet vinyldene radical) (1c), and C3H6 → C3H4 (allene) + H2 (1d). The RRKM calculations reveal the branching fractions for (1a), (1b), and (1c) to be approximately 0.8, 0.2, and 0.01, respectively. Reaction (1d) and other product channels are negligible (< 0.1 %), and the pressure dependence of the branching fraction is small under the present experimental conditions. The experimental yield of H atoms (1.7-2.0) is consistent with the theoretical branching fractions considering the H-atom production from the rapid subsequent thermal decomposition of a C3H5 and C2H3. From the observed time profiles of H atoms, the rate of overall thermal decomposition of C3H6 can be evaluated as Ln(k1/s(-1)) = (38.05 ± 1.18) - (48.91 ± 1.85) × 10(3) K/T, which is in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction.

ABSTRACT

We report a new host molecule in which one diethylene glycol chain (i.e., a loop possessing only three oxygen atoms) incorporated along with two phenolic aromatic rings is linked by a xylene spacer into a macroring. The design of the molecular structure of this macrocycle "amplifies" any potential [cation...pi], [N+-H...pi], and [N+C-H...pi] interactions between the dibenzylammonium (DBA+) ion and the phenolic rings of the macrocycle; as such, these species display a very strong binding affinity in CD3NO2 (Ka = 15,000 M(-1)). The macroring also coordinates to bipyridinium ions in a [2]pseudorotaxane fashion, which makes it the smallest macrocycle (i.e., a 25-membered ring) known to complex both DBA+ and bipyridinium ions in solution. To confirm unambiguously that these pseudorotaxanes exist in solution, we synthesized their corresponding interlocked molecules, namely rotaxanes and catenanes.

ABSTRACT

The near full-length sequences of the groESL genes were determined and analysed among eight reference strains (serotypes a to h) representing five species of mutans group streptococci. The groES sequences from these reference strains revealed that there are two lengths (285 and 288 bp) in the five species. The intergenic spacer between groES and groEL appears to be a unique marker for species, with a variable size (ranging from 111 to 310 bp) and sequence. Phylogenetic analysis of groES and groEL separated the eight serotypes into two major clusters. Strains of serotypes b, c, e and f were highly related and had groES gene sequences of the same length, 288 bp, while strains of serotypes a, d, g and h were also closely related and their groES gene sequence lengths were 285 bp. The groESL sequences in clinical isolates of three serotypes of S. mutans were analysed for intraspecies polymorphism. The results showed that the groESL sequences could provide information for differentiation among species, but were unable to distinguish serotypes of the same species. Based on the determined sequences, a PCR assay was developed that could differentiate members of the mutans streptococci by amplicon size and provide an alternative way for distinguishing mutans streptococci from other viridans streptococci.

ABSTRACT

The mild and efficient reaction between triethyl phosphite and benzylic azides allows us not only to construct rotaxanes in high yield from dibenzo[24]crown-8 (DB24C8) and dibenzylammonium (DBA(+))-derived threads but also to incorporate di(p-toluidine)[24]crown-8, which binds DBA(+) ions much more weakly than does DB24C8, into a corresponding [2]rotaxane.
