ABSTRACT

The Western Indian Continental Shelf (WICS) experiences upwelling during the Southwest Monsoon (SWM), leading to deoxygenation and acidification of subsurface waters. The region has patchy growth of corals, e.g. in the Grande Island and Angria Bank. Measurements made during the late SWM of 2022 reveal that the shelf waters around the Grande Island were subject to varying environmental conditions, viz. lower temperature (21.3-26.1°C), oxygen (0-4.9 mL L-1) and pHT (7.506-7.927). Complete anoxia was associated with sulphide build-up to a maximum of 5.9 µmol L-1 at 17 m depth. An additional episodic condition (high temperature, low oxygen and pH) also occurred associated presumably with a plankton bloom in April 2017. Hence, unlike the offshore coral site Angria Bank, waters around the Grande Island experiences extreme changes in physico-chemical conditions (e.g. Ωarg ∼1.2-1.8 during October 2022) seasonally as reported here. The biogeochemical conditions are however not as intense (Ωarg = 0.6) as observed along the eastern boundary upwelling system of the Pacific Ocean.

ABSTRACT

An increase in antibiotic pollution in reef areas will lead to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, leading to ecological disturbances in the sensitive coral holobiont. This study provides insights into the genome of antibiotics-resistant Stutzerimonas frequens CAM01, isolated from Favites-associated Symbiodiniaceae of a near-shore polluted reef of Palk Bay, India. The draft genome contains 4.67 Mbp in size with 52 contigs. Further genome analysis revealed the presence of four antibiotic-resistant genes, namely, adeF, rsmA, APH (3")-Ib, and APH (6)-Id that provide resistance by encoding resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND) antibiotic efflux pump and aminoglycoside phosphotransferase. The isolate showed resistance against 73% of the antibiotics tested, concurrent with the predicted AMR genes. Four secondary metabolites, namely Aryl polyene, NRPS-independent-siderophore, terpenes, and ectoine were detected in the isolate, which may play a role in virulence and pathogenicity adaptation in microbes. This study provides key insights into the genome of Stutzerimonas frequens CAM01 and highlights the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in coral reef ecosystems.

ABSTRACT

Skeletal tissue growth anomalies (STAs) of corals are capable of causing considerable degradation of reef health. This study is the first report of growth anomalies in Turbinaria corals and the first descriptive study of Indian corals. T. mesenterina colonies at 2 sites were affected by small, round to irregularly shaped growth anomalies. Prevalence of STAs was observed to be higher in T. mesenterina colonies with larger diameters. Prevalence of STAs on T. mesenterina was 71% at Site 1 and 40% at Site 2. Affected colonies were seen to be undergoing tissue damage and infiltration by filamentous algae. We describe the gross morphology of growth anomalies which can act as baseline data for growth anomalies from this region, but further investigation is needed to understand the form and etiology of this coral disease.
