ABSTRACT

The main goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutraceuticals vs. in-feed antibiotics on performance, blood lipids, antioxidant capacity, cecal microbiota, and organ histomorphology of broiler chickens. A total of 320 one-day-old male broiler chickens were distributed into 5 treatment groups with 8 replicates each. The control group was fed on a basal diet without any additives (NC); the antibiotic group was fed on a basal diet supplemented with 100 mg kg-1 avilamycin (PC); the algal group was fed on a basal diet supplemented with a mixture of Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris (1.5 g + 1.5 g/kg feed) (SP+CV); the essential oil group was fed with a basal diet containing 300 mg/kg feed rosemary oil (REO); and the probiotics group (a mixture of 1 × 1011 CFU/g Bacillus licheniformis, 1 × 1011 CFU/g Enterococcus facieum, 1 × 1010 CFU/g Lactobacillus acidophilus, and 2 × 108 CFU /g Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was fed with a basal diet supplemented with 0.05% probiotics (PRO). The experiment lasted for 35 d. A beneficial effect of SP+CV and PRO (P < 0.01) was noticed on final body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and breast yield. The dietary supplementation with SP+CV, REO, and PRO increased (P < 0.001) broilers' cecal lactic acid bacteria count compared to the control. Lower cecal Clostridium perfringens and Coliform counts (P < 0.001) were noticed in chickens fed the PC and supplemental diets. Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration was decreased, while glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase, and catalase enzymes were increased in the breast and thigh meat (P < 0.001) of broiler chickens fed SP+CV, REO, and PRO diets. Dietary SP+CV, REO, and PRO supplementation decreased (P < 0.001) serum total lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, and MDA, but increased serum high-density lipoprotein and GPx compared to PC and NC. No pathological lesions were noticed in the liver, kidney, or breast muscle among broilers. The SP+CV, REO, and PRO groups had greater (P < 0.001) intestinal villi height and crypt depth while lower goblet cell densities (P < 0.01) than the control. The present findings suggest that PRO and SP+CV, followed by REO could be suitable alternatives to in-feed antibiotics for enhancing the performance, health, and meat quality of broiler chickens.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: In this work, we explore the potential of 2D materials, particularly graphene and its derivatives, for eco-friendly electricity generation and air pollution reduction. Leveraging the significant surface area of graphene nanomaterials, the susceptibility of these graphene-based nanostructures to hazardous substances and their applicability in clean solar cell (SSC) devices were systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT), as implemented within Gaussian 5.0 code. Time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) was employed to characterize the UV-visible spectrum of unstrained nanostructures. Herein, we considered three potentially harmful gases-CO, NH3, and Br2. Adsorption calculations revealed a notable interaction between the pure graphene nanostructure and Br2 gas, while the S-doped counterpart exhibited reduced interaction. Saturated S-doped nanostructures demonstrated an enhanced affinity for NH3 and CO gases compared to their pure S-doped counterparts, attributed to the sulfur (S) atom facilitating gas molecule binding to the nanostructure's surface. Furthermore, simulations of the SSC device architecture indicated the superior performance of the pure graphene nanostructure in terms of light-harvesting efficiency, injection energy, and electron injection into the lower conduction band of CBM titanium dioxide (TiO2). These findings suggest a potential avenue for developing nanostructures tailored for SSC devices and gas sensors, offering a dual solution to address air pollution concerns. METHODS: Density function theory was used to compute the ground and excited state properties for pure and sulfur-doped graphene nanostructures. The hybrid function B3LYP with a 6-31G* basis set was utilized to describe the exchange correlation. Gauss Sum 2.2 software is used to estimate the density of state (DOS) for all structures under investigation.

ABSTRACT

There is an increasing focus on genetically altering Paulownia trees to enhance their resistance against fungal infections, given their rapid growth and quality wood production. The aim of this research was to establish a technique for incorporating two antimicrobial thionin genes, namely thionin-60 (thio-60) and thionin-63 (thio-63), into Paulownia tomentosa and Paulownia hybrid 9501 through the utilization of chitosan nanoparticles. The outcomes revealed the successful gene transfer into Paulownia trees utilizing chitosan nanoparticles. The effectiveness of thionin proteins against plant pathogens Fusarium and Aspergillus was examined, with a specific focus on Fusarium equiseti due to limited available data. In non-transgenic Paulownia species, the leaf weight inhibition percentage varied from 25 to 36 %, whereas in transgenic species, it ranged from 22 to 7 %. In general, Paulownia species expressing thio-60 displayed increased resistance to F. equiseti, while those expressing thio-63 exhibited heightened resistance to A. niger infection. The thionin proteins displayed a strong affinity for the phospholipid bilayer of the fungal cell membrane, demonstrating their capability to disrupt its structure. The transgenic plants created through this technique showed increased resistance to fungal infections. Thionin-60 demonstrated superior antifungal properties in comparison to thio-63, being more effective at disturbing the fungal cell membrane. These findings indicate that thio-60 holds potential as a novel antifungal agent and presents a promising approach for enhancing the antimicrobial traits of genetically modified Paulownia trees.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This research assesses the utilization of sieved olive pulp (SOP) in the diet of growing rabbits through the use of an exogenous enzyme or dry yeast as a pretreatment. Materials and Methods: One hundred sixty-eight male V-Line rabbits aged 5 weeks (weighing 550 ± 25 gm) were randomly divided into seven groups with eight replicates each as follows: the control group was fed a basal diet without supplementation; while the other six groups were fed basal diets containing 20% and 25% of SOP and supplemented with 0.1 gm/kg Econase (E), 0.5 gm/kg dry yeast (Y), and a combination of both. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks. Results: The results indicated that supplementation of E, Y, and EY into rabbit diets containing SOP improved live body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and nutrient digestibility. A higher dressing percentage was observed in the groups fed a 20% and 25% SOP diet supplemented with EY (p < 0.05). The treated groups showed an increase in total protein, albumin, globulin, A/G ratio, total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase (p < 0.05), while there was a significant decrease in triglycerides, total cholesterol, and malondialdehyde levels (p < 0.05) compared to the control. Rabbit groups fed an SOP diet supplemented with E, Y, or EY demonstrated higher (p < 0.05) economic efficiency compared to the control. Conclusion: Supplementing the diet of rabbits containing SOP with exogenous enzymes and/or dry yeast enhances the nutritional value of SOP while improving rabbit performance, nutrient digestibility, and antioxidant status.

Background: To evaluate the effect of surface treatments on adhesion of milled PEEK post to two different composite resin core-build up materials. Material and Methods: Six PEEK posts were divided into the following groups: G1: no treatment+ Grandio core material, G2: no treatment+ Bulk-fill core material, G3: 98% sulfuric acid for 60 seconds+ Grandio core material, G4: 98% sulfuric acid for 60 seconds+ Bulk-fill core material, G5: 50 µm airborne particle abraded + Grandio core material, G6: 50 µm airborne particle abraded + bulk fill core material. The adhesion of the post to core build-up materials was tested using micro push-out bond strength. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test. Results: There was a significant effect for the surface treatment (p<.001), a non-significant effect for the core build-up materials (p<.289), and a significant effect for their interaction (p<.001) on the bond strength values. Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, sulfuric acid etching group significantly increased the bond strength compared to other groups. Bulk-fill core material could be a feasible option when restoring ETT in terms of saving chair time and the treatment procedure simplicity. ABSTRACT

To determine the effects of organic selenium (0.0-0.6 mg and 0.9 mg Se/Kg diet) and Zn-Cr mixture (100 mg Zn/Kg diet plus 1.5 mg Cr/Kg diet) on broiler chicken performance, carcass traits, blood hematology, and biochemistry under heat stress conditions, this study was conducted. Under temperatures between 30.21 to 31.82 °C, 240 broiler chickens (Ross-308), which were 7-day-old, were randomly assigned to one of six treatments: T1 (control), T2 (100 mg Zn per kg of diet and 1.5 mg Cr per kg of diet), T3 (0.6 mg Se per kg of diet), T4 (0.9 mg Se per kg of diet), T5 (100 mg Zn, 1.5 mg Cr and (LSe), and T6 (100 mg Zn, 1.5 mg Cr and (HSe)). At 35 days old, the chicks fed a diet containing Zn-Cr with low or high organic selenium (organic-Se) outweighed the control group in terms of live body weight, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05). In comparison to the control treatment, birds fed diets supplemented with Zn-Cr or organic-Se (LSe, HSe) significantly increased their serum levels of total protein and total antioxidant capacity. However, these additives resulted in a decrease (p < 0.01) in their serum levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, creatinine, and uric acid. Together, it was found that trace elements (Zn-Cr and organic-Se) may greatly lessen the impacts of heat stress on broilers by promoting growth performance and boosting metabolic processes.

ABSTRACT

The current study aimed to demonstrate the effects of dietary dried orange pulp (DOP) on the laying performance, egg quality, antioxidant status, yolk fatty acid composition, serum biochemistry, and reproductive tract morphology of laying hens. A total of 200 Lohman Brown Lite laying hens were randomly allotted into 4 dietary treatments with 10 replicates each. The experimental treatment groups were the control group, a basal diet containing 50 g DOP/kg feed (DOP5%), a basal diet containing 70 g DOP/kg feed (DOP7%), and a basal diet containing 100 g DOP/kg feed (DOP10%). Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA following a completely randomized design, and the incremental levels of dietary DOP were tested by orthogonal polynomial contrasts. The body weight gain, feed intake, egg production%, egg weight, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio of laying hens fed the DOP7% and DOP10% diets were greater (p < 0.01) than those fed the control diet. Eggs obtained from the DOP7% and DOP10% groups had a heavier shell weight% and shell thickness, as well as a greater yolk color score (p < 0.01; linear, p < 0.01). Dietary DOP improved the egg yolk concentrations of PUFA, n-3 PUFA, and n-6 PUFA (linear, p < 0.001; quadratic, p < 0.05), whereas the content of SFA was reduced (p < 0.001; linear, p < 0.001). The egg yolk cholesterol and triglyceride levels were linearly decreased (p < 0.001) with the inclusion of DOP in the diets of hens. After storage for 40 days, the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in the egg yolk were reduced, whereas the glutathione peroxidase content was increased (p < 0.01) due to dietary DOP. The DOP7% and DOP10% hens had an obvious reduction in the levels of serum total lipids, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, and MDA, whereas high-density lipoprotein and GPx levels were increased (p < 0.01) compared with those fed the control diet. The relative weights of the ovary, oviduct, uterus, and follicle of hens receiving diets containing 7% and 10% DOP were heavier (p < 0.01) than those of the control hens. Moreover, the number of large yellow follicles was increased (p < 0.001; linear, p < 0.001) in the hens-fed diets containing 7% and 10% DOP. In conclusion, dietary DOP at up to 100 g/kg of feed improves laying performance, health status, antioxidant capacity, egg nutritive value, and egg shelf life in laying hens.

ABSTRACT

Grape pomace (GP) is an industrial by-product of grape juice making and is commonly discarded as a waste product, even with its large quantity of phytochemicals. Thus, the objectives of this trial were to examine the effects of graded dietary GP on laying rate, egg quality, yolk lipid profile, oxidative stability, shell quality and ultrastructure, and serum biochemistry. Two hundred 35-week-old laying hens were allocated to four dietary treatments with ten replicates each. Four diets were formulated by mixing a standard basal diet with GP at 0 g/kg (control), 30 g/kg (GP3%), 60 g/kg (GP6%), and 90 g/kg (GP9%). Egg production percent, egg weight, and egg mass were linearly improved (p < 0.01) due to adding GP to the diets of laying hens. Eggs obtained from laying hens fed with GP diets had (p < 0.01; linear, p < 0.01) greater Haugh units, yolk color, albumen index, and yolk index than those of the control. The GP9% group had the greatest values (p < 0.05) for shell weight, thickness, and breaking strength. Electron microscopy scanning of eggshells indicated that the incremental dietary level of GP linearly augmented the thickness of the palisade layer but reduced both the mammillary layer and mammillary knob width (p < 0.01). Improved tibia-breaking strength and ash content were shown (p < 0.05) in the GP-fed laying hens. The dietary addition of GP by up to 90 g/kg linearly (p < 0.01) mitigated lipid oxidation and improved the antioxidant capacity in both the serum and stored eggs. A reduction in the percentages of saturated fatty acids was observed, while the contents of monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and n-3 fatty acids were augmented because of increasing dietary GP levels (p < 0.001). Additionally, the eggs obtained from laying hens fed on the GP6% and GP9% had lower yolk cholesterol content (p < 0.001); this effect was confirmed by linear and quadratic responses (p < 0.001). Laying hens on GP diets had lower (p < 0.01) serum hepatic enzymes, cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein but greater high-density lipoprotein compared to the control. To sum up, the addition of GP in the layers' diets by up to 90 g/kg increased laying performance, enriched the yolk with beneficial fatty acids, enhanced antioxidant potential in yolk lipids, and improved shell quality and ultrastructure.

BACKGROUND: The surface treatment to improve the repair bond strength may vary because CAD/CAM provisional restoration polymers exhibit a variety of microstructures. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of surface treatments on the repairability of three different CAD/CAM polymers for long-term provisional restorations. METHODS: Thirty specimens from each provisional restorative materials (CAD-Temp, Everest C-Temp, and PEEK) were divided into three groups: C: surfaces received no treatment; SB: surfaces were airborne particle abraded with 50 µm aluminum oxide; SB-T: surfaces received the same conditions as group SB in addition to thermocycling before and after treatment. Primer and nanohybrid repair resin composite were applied to the prepared CAD /CAM surfaces. The shear bond strength and the mode of failure were assessed. ANOVA and Tukey's significant difference tests were used to evaluate the data. RESULTS: The SB group had significantly higher repair SBS values (p < .001) compared to the other groups (C and SB-T). Everest C-Temp significantly recorded the highest repair SBS (17.84 ± 0.19 MPa) in group SB, while the lowest repair SBS values (5.51 ± 1.14 MPa) for CAD-Temp were recorded in group C. PEEK significantly recorded the second highest repair SBS (15.96 ± 0.18) in the SB group. CONCLUSIONS: Everest C-Temp had the highest repair SBS after an airborne abrasion particle. Thermocycling had no significant effect on the repair SBS for PEEK. Everest C-Temp and PEEK are recommended as long-term durable provisional materials for clinical use.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The relationship between the genetic diversity of Blastocystis and immune surveillance in precancerous colons with blastocystosis is still under investigation. This study aimed to identify the genetic Blastocystis variants among 54 symptomatic human isolates and their relationship to mucosal immune surveillance in the precancerous polyps of experimentally infected rats. METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction and high-resolution melting (PCR/HRM) curves discriminated human symptomatic Blastocystis isolates into subtypes (STs)/intrasubtypes, which were orally administered to rats to induce experimental infection. Then, the mucosal immune responses of the infected colons were evaluated in relation to polyp formation through immunostaining to identify mucus MUC2 and determine mucosal immune cell (goblet, lymphocyte and mast) counts, secretory IgA levels and parasitic intestinal invasion. RESULTS: ST1, ST3, and ST4 were found in 18.5% (10/54), 54.7% (29/54), and 27.8% (15/54) of the samples, respectively. Then, the HRM curve discriminated ST3 into the wild, mutant, and heterozygous [17/54 (31.5%), 5/54 (9.3%), and 7/54 (12.9%)] intrasubtypes. ST1 and ST4 had no genetic variations. Precancerous polyps were detected in the colons of 40.5% of the infected rats. ST1 constituted 14.7% of these cases, while the wild, mutant, and heterozygous intrasubtypes of ST3 showed polyps in 12.9%, 5.5%, and 5.5% of cases, respectively. Only 1.9% of the polyps were related to ST4. MUC2 showed weak immunostaining in 44.5% of the infected colons, and 38.9% were polyp inducers. Low goblet cell numbers and high interepithelial lymphocyte counts were significantly associated with polyp formation, particularly with ST1 and wild ST3. Among the polyp inducers, high numbers of mast cells were detected in wild ST3 and ST4, while a low number was found with heterozygous ST3. The level of secretory IgA was low in polyp-inducing STs. Most of the results were statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Immunosurveillance showed a potential relationship between ST1 and the ST3 intrasubtypes and precancerous polyps. This relationship may provide insight into the prevention and/or development of new immunotherapeutic strategies to combat colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) are multifaceted, and the health implications of the COVID-19 pandemic are far-reaching, especially for NCDs. Physical distancing and quarantine can lead to the poor management of NCDs because the visual tracking of them has been replaced with medical digital technology, that is, smartphone apps. This study aimed to explore medical digital technology applications for NCDs for follow-up during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The participants in this study were 400 adult patients with NCDs; they were selected by systematic random sampling. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. The study was conducted in the outpatient department of Yanbu General Hospital and primary-care health centers in Yanbu Al-Baher, Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The tools used in this study were a structured questionnaire to collect the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients and their health history, an NCD questionnaire to assess follow-up of the patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a medical digital technologies questionnaire to explore the medical digital technology applications. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 47.32 ± 14.362 years, and 62.8% of them were female and 372 were male. Of the patients, 69.2% and 57.5% had been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and hypertension, respectively; 52.4% were followed up monthly, and 29.75% used medical digital technology applications such as Tabeby Online to monitor their health. Furthermore, 71.75% and 75.5% of the patients used the Sehhaty and Tawakkalna medical digital applications, respectively. Overall, 38.7% of the patients were satisfied with using medical digital technology applications used for follow-up during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: The study concluded that the services that use networks, smartphones, and medical digital technology applications on the Saudi Ministry of Health website and mobile applications to improve the quality of the health-care system, and that provide health services for noncommunicable or communicable diseases, are not effective. This is because the patients lack awareness of these services, with most of the chronic patients being elderly with lower levels of education and computer literacy.

ABSTRACT

Study Objective: To compare between oral diclofenac potassium alone versus a combination of it with hyoscine-N-butyl bromide (HBB) in reduction of pain in women undergoing office hysteroscopy. Design: Randomized, double-blind controlled trial. Setting: Kasralainy  hospital (a tertiary hospital). Intervention: Sixty-Four patients undergoing office hysteroscopy were randomly divided into 2 groups (study group and placebo group) in the ratio of 1:1. Group 1 (study group = 32 participants) received two oral HBB tablets and one tablet of diclofenac potassium and group 2 (placebo group = 32 participants) received two oral placebo tablet similar in size, structure and color to buscopan in addition to the diclofenac tablet. The patient was given the drugs 30-60 min before the procedure. Results: There was statistically significant difference between the two groups in the pain score immediately during entry (p value = 0.001) and after 30 min of the procedure (p value = < 0.001). And there was a statistically significant difference as regards the side effects (gastric irritation) of the medications (p value = 0.04) between the women participating in the two groups. Conclusion: The combination of diclofenac potassium and HBB helps a lot in decreasing the pain and discomfort during and after performing office hysteroscopy but with more gastric side effects.

The present trial was designed to assess the effect of phytase, multi-strain probiotic, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and fumaric acid on performance, nutrient digestibility, bone physical parameters and mineralization, blood constituents, bone and gut histomorphology, and duodenal phosphorus transporter genes of broiler chickens fed a decreased non-phytate phosphorus (nPP) diet for 5 weeks. A total of 480 broiler chickens were allotted to six dietary groups and eight replicates each: (1) positive control diet with recommended levels of nPP (PC; 0.48, 0.44, and 0.41% in the three feeding phases); (2) negative control diet with a decreased dietary nPP (NC; 0.28, 0.24, and 0.21% in the three feeding phases); (3) NC + 600 FTU/kg phytase (PHY); (4) NC + 0.05% multi-strain probiotic (PRO); (5) NC + 0.2% Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC); and (6) NC + 0.2% fumaric acid. Growth performance data were recorded weekly, and blood sampling was performed at days 21 and 35 of age. Bone quality traits, gut and tibia histology, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal gene expression analyses were conducted at the end of the trial (35 days of age). Final body weight and total gain at day 35 of age of the broiler chickens fed with the PHY, PRO, and SC diets were greater (p < 0.01) than in NC, where broilers fed with the PRO and PHY diets had higher values and were similar to that of PC. There was a non-significant variation in the cumulative feed intake among the treatment groups. The PHY and PRO groups had better FCR than the PC group (p < 0.05), and FA and SC had an FCR equivalent to that of PC. The PHY and PRO broilers had greater dressing % than the NC group (p < 0.05) and even better than PC. The PHY, PRO, SC, and FA broilers had higher relative weights of spleen and bursa of Fabricius (p < 0.01) than NC. In comparison to NC, the PHY, PRO, and SC groups improved (p < 0.05) CP, CF, Ca, and P digestibility. Greater tibia breaking strength of the low nPP-supplemented groups was shown to be associated with higher tibia ash, Ca, and P concentrations (p < 0.01) and increased (p < 0.001) tibia cortical area thickness. At days 21 and 35 of age, the dietary supplements to low nPP diets reduced (p < 0.05) serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, glucose, and alkaline phosphatase levels, while serum Ca and P concentrations were improved (p < 0.05) compared to NC. All supplements led to enhancement (p < 0.01) in villi height and width and villi absorptive surface area when compared with NC and were even comparable to that of PC. The mRNA expression of NaP-IIb was up-regulated (p < 0.001) in the duodenum of PRO and FA broilers at day 35 of age compared with NC, and their expression levels were similar to that of PC, indicating greater P availability. It is concluded that dietary supplementation of PHY, PRO, SC, and FA to a low nPP diet was advantageous and mitigated the negative impacts of P reduction on the growth performance, health, nutrient digestibility, and bone quality of broilers.

ABSTRACT

This trial was performed to determine the effect of rice bran oil (RBO) inclusion in diets of broiler chickens on performance, carcass characteristics, blood parameters, meat quality, antioxidant activity, liver lipid content, and liver histological structure. The 35-day feeding trial was conducted on 240 one-day-old Ross 308 broiler chickens, allocated to four treatment groups with six replicates each. RBO was examined at different inclusion levels, 0% (control), 1% (RBO1%), 1.5% (RBO1.5%), and 2% (RBO2%) in a completely randomized design. The results showed that at the end of the trial (35 days) the RBO supplementation had positive effects (p < 0.001) on the productivity parameters, but the feed intake was linearly decreased due to RBO inclusion. In addition, RBO supplementation linearly improved (p < 0.05) the dressing percentage, breast yield, immune organs relative weights, and meat glutathione concentration, while it decreased (p < 0.01) the abdominal fat yield and meat crude fat, triglycerides, cholesterol, and Malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in broiler's meat. Moreover, serum total protein, globulin, and high-density lipoprotein contents improved noticeably (p < 0.01) due to offering an RBO-supplemented diet, but serum total lipids, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, and aspartate aminotransferase concentrations linearly reduced (p < 0.01). The RBO supplementation augmented (p < 0.05) the phagocytic index, phagocytic activity, and antibody titer compared to control. On the other hand, RBO inclusion had no effect on the breast, thigh, or abdominal fat color parameters. Moreover, RBO supplementation reduced (p < 0.01) the content of total saturated FA (SFA), but increased (p < 0.01) the content of total monounsaturated FA (MUFA), and polyunsaturated FA in both breast and thigh meat. Chemical analysis of the liver tissue samples revealed that the inclusion of RBO linearly reduced (p < 0.05) hepatic cholesterol, triglyceride, and MDA contents. Histologically, the lipid percentage and number of lipid droplets (p < 0.01) were markedly lessened in the RBO-supplemented groups. The histological structure of the liver asses by light and electron microscope were normal in all groups without any pathological lesions. It is concluded that RBO could be used as a valuable ingredient in broiler chickens' diets to stimulate the growing performance and immune status, enhance the antioxidant activity and blood lipid profile, augment liver function, and improve the nutritive value of the meat.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of amniopatch in pregnancies associated with spontaneous preterm premature rupture of fetal membranes (PPROM).Methods: A randomized controlled trial that involved 100 women diagnosed with PPROM between 24 and 34 weeks of gestational age. Participants were randomized equally into two groups. Group I in which amniopatch was done in addition to the routine management. Group II was treated with routine management including antibiotics and corticosteroids.Results: Amniopatch was successful in complete sealing of the membrane defect in 6/50 (12%) of women while none the control group have undergone similar sealing (p = .0144, RR = 0.88). Women in the amniopatch group showed a significant increase of AFI compared to controls (12 versus 0, p = .0001, RR = 0.56).Conclusion: The amniopatch procedure is a successful technique that safely enhances sealing of fetal membranes and restore the AFI.Clinical trial registration: NCT03473210SynopsisThe amniopatch procedure is a successful technique that could be done safely to enhance sealing the fetal membranes and restoring the AFI after PPROM.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether dual triggering of final oocyte maturation with a combination of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) can improve the number of retrieved oocytes and clinical pregnancy rate in poor responders undergoing in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI) cycles using a GnRH-antagonist protocol. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial included poor ovarian responders indicated for ICSI using a GnRH-antagonist protocol. They were divided equally into two groups: group I received 10 000 units of hCG plus 0.2 mg of triptorelin while group II received 10 000 units of hCG only for triggering of ovulation. The primary outcome parameter was the number of oocytes retrieved. Secondary outcomes included metaphase II oocytes number, cancellation rate, number of obtained embryos, chemical and clinical pregnancy rates. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty women were included in the study, with 80 women in each treatment group. Dual triggering was associated with higher number of retrieved oocytes (5.3 ± 1.9 vs 4.5 ± 2.4, P=0.014), metaphase II oocytes (3.8 ± 1.4 vs 3.1 ± 1.7, P=0.004), total and grade 1 embryos (2.7 ± 1.1 and 2.3 ± 1.0 vs 1.9 ± 1.2 and 1.1 ± 0.2, P=0.001 and 0.021 respectively), and transferred embryos (2.2 ± 0.9 vs 1.6 ± 0.9, P=0.043, and lower cancellation rate (7.5% vs 20%, P=0.037) compared with single triggering. There were significantly higher chemical (25% vs 11.3%, P=0.039) and clinical (22.5% vs 8.8%, P=0.028) pregnancy rates in women with dual triggering compared with those with single triggering. CONCLUSION: Dual triggering is associated with better IVF outcome in poor responders compared with single trigger. Clinical trial registration NCT04008966.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of cyclosporiasis is currently based on the microscopic detection of oocysts, which may provide invalid results. The availability of simple, objective immunological screening tests would facilitate epidemiological studies of cyclosporiasis. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the antigens of Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts and their validity in serodiagnosis. METHODS: According to parasitological and molecular diagnoses, three study groups were specified. Group (G) I included 30 patients with cyclosporiasis, GII included 12 patients with other parasitic infections, and GIII included 16 healthy subjects. SDS-PAGE was used to analyse C. cayetanensis antigens, and the validity of western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) was then assessed amongst the sera of all study groups. RESULTS: The C. cayetanensis antigenic profile showed eight characteristic bands with molecular weights ranging from 14 to 175 kDa. Western blot analysis of sera revealed 93.3% (28/30 of GI) and 92.8% (26/28 of GII and III) sensitivity and specificity, respectively, dividing the patients in GI into four subgroups. The most frequent diagnostic bands (71.4% of GI sera) showed weights of 26-28 kDa, followed by 71 kDa (53.6%). ELISA sensitivity was 90% (27/30), and specificity was 78.6%. Validation showed perfect agreement between the PCR and western blot results, and ELISA presented substantial agreement with both the PCR and western blot results. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest the existence of high immunogenic diversity in C. cayetanensis and indicate that the 26-28 kDa immunogenic groups may potentially be used as a diagnostic marker of cyclosporiasis. Due to the high validity of ELISA, it might be the test of choice for the routine serodiagnosis of cyclosporiasis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The study objective is to evaluate the benefits of using ultrasound guidance during insertion of Intrauterine device IUD in women with retroverted flexed RVF uteri. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial conducted on 400 women with RVF uteri eligible for IUD insertion. They were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group 1 underwent IUD insertion under ultrasound guidance while in group 2 no ultrasound guidance was used. The primary outcome measure was the(Visual Analogue Scale) VAS pain score reported by the women during insertion. Other outcome included easiness of insertion, the procedure time and occurrence of complications as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, failure of insertion, uterine perforation and bleeding. RESULTS: The VAS pain score was significantly lower (2.36 ± 1.77 vs. 4.74 ± 2.35, p < 0.001), the insertion was much easier (score 4.0 ± 0.9 vs. 2.5 ± 1.27, p < 0.001) and the time needed for the procedure was significantly shorter (5.82 ± 2.56 vs. 9.4 ± 4.99 min, p < 0.001) in women within the ultrasound guided group when compared to control group. The total rate of complications was significantly lower (6 vs. 16 %, p 0.001) especially bleeding (2 vs. 9%, p = 0.002), abdominal cramps (10.5 vs. 28 %, p 0.012) and failure of the procedure (0 vs. 3%, p = 005) in ultrasound guided group women when compared to control. CONCLUSION: Insertion of Intrauterine device IUD under ultrasound guidance in women with Retroverted flexed RVF uterus easier and less painful than the blind standard technique.

OBJECTIVE: Colposcopy is a direct microscopic method and is the gold standard tool to detect early cervical dysplastic lesions. In the past, many attempts have been made to use gynecologic methods to examine the oral mucosa. The aim of this study was to detect the diagnostic accuracy of oral colposcopy in diagnosing oral dysplastic lesions in comparison with microscopic evaluation based on biopsy and compare Reid's Colposcopic Index (RCI) and the Swede scoring system in diagnosing oral dysplastic lesions. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-five patients who presented for diagnosis of oral leukoplakia to the Oral Medicine and Periodontology Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University (Cairo, Egypt) and met the selection criteria were recruited in this study. Each patient was subjected to colposcopic examination, followed by biopsy to confirm the results of colposcopy. The sensitivity and specificity of oral colposcopy were calculated after colposcopic assessment by using the Swede scoring system and the RCI. RESULTS: The diagnostic accuracy of oral colposcopy with use of the Swede scoring system was superior to that of oral colposcopy with the use of the RCI. CONCLUSIONS: Colposcopic examination using the Swede scoring system is very specific for diagnosing oral epithelial dysplasia and for using the "see-and-treat" method, whereas the RCI is a very sensitive screening method for the diagnosis of oral epithelial dysplasia in oral potentially malignant disorders.
