ABSTRACT

This study outlines the results of an investigation of a large C. auris outbreak at King Saud Medical City (KSMC), a quaternary hospital in Saudi Arabia. We identified 122 cases of C. auris (colonization, 74; infection, 48) from June 2021 to June 2022. The mean patient age was 48.4 years, and the median duration of stay before diagnosis was 32.7 days. A significant proportion of patients (87.70%) were diagnosed with C. auris more than 3 days after admission to KSMC. The source of exposure was either nosocomial (from KSMC, 28.68%; from other hospitals, 16.39%) or unknown (54.91%). The hospitalization mortality rate was 45.90%. This report highlights the challenges in investigating and managing C. auris outbreaks, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach incorporating strategies for screening and early identification, effective environmental cleaning, and the implementation of stringent infection control measures such as hand hygiene, isolation of patient, standard and contact precaution and decolonization.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Obese patients are at increased risk for CVD, which is the main cause of premature death and has been a major cause of disability and ill health in recent years. PTN, a natural dihydrochalcone flavonoid, has a variety of pharmacological characteristics. This article aimed to prepare PTN-NSLs to evaluate their anti-obesity activity. METHODS: Morphology, Particle size, zeta potential, UV-vis, entrapment efficiency, FT-IR spectra, and an in vitro release study of PTN-NSLs were described. PTN-NSLs were also tested for their anti-obesity properties in obese rats. The LD50 of PTN-NSLs was calculated, as was the 1/20 LD50 prepared for the treatment of obese rats. Also, the level of glycemic, oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers were estimated in the obese rat's model. RESULTS: The synthesized PTN-NSLs were uniform, spherically shaped, and well dispersed with no aggregation noted, with a size range of 114.06 ± 8.35 nm. The measured zeta potential value of PTN-NSLs was -32.50.8 mv. Also, the UV spectra of PTN and PTN-NSLs have strong absorption at 225 and 285 nm. Also, the LD50 of PTN-NSLs was found to be 2750 mg/kg.b.w. Moreover, administrating obese rats with PTN-NSLs resulted in improved glycemic features as well as GSH, SOD, GPx, GR, IL10, TBARs, and IL-6 levels, as well as attenuated FAS, SREBP1c, AMPK, ACO, CPT1, and OB-Rb gene expression. CONCLUSIONS: Administration of PTN-NSLs significantly attenuated the levels of glycemic, oxidative stress, and inflammatory biomarkers. The biochemical and PCR findings are aided by histological investigations. Also, the present findings imply that PTN-NSLs might be a promising pharmacological tool for the treatment of obesity-related diseases.

ABSTRACT

Background Heliotropium bacciferum, often known as wild heliotrope or wild quailplant, is a flowering plant from the borage family. This study examines the anti-metastatic impact of H. bacciferum on Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) breast cancer cells and its ability to disrupt signaling pathways. Aim To explore the anti-metastatic effect of H. bacciferum on the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. Materials and methods For this research, MCF-7 breast cancer cells were used. Cells were cultured and subjected to 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, as well as gene expression analysis for glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3ß), wingless-related integration site 2 (Wnt2), and ß-catenin. The plant extract was tested to determine if it successfully blocked the signalling pathway or not.  Results The MTT test was performed to study the cytotoxic impact of H. bacciferum. At an increasing concentration of 100 µg/mL, the extract inhibited growth by 55%, whereas at 150 µg/mL, it inhibited growth by 52.5%. Maximum inhibition was seen at 150 µg/mL. H. bacciferum suppressed the GSK3ß and Wnt2 signaling pathways in MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines, acting as an anti-metastatic and anticancer agent. The heliotrine compound in H. bacciferum showed high binding energy to metastatic targets such as GSK3ß, Wnt2, and ß-catenin. Moreover, chemical absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) properties also support the study. Conclusion In this study, we can infer that H. bacciferum has a favourable anticancer impact on MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines and may be utilised as an anticancer drug against breast cancer cells. It can also be further evaluated for different breast cancers and cell lines.

ABSTRACT

Background Electrochemical sensing is a versatile field that uses electrochemistry concepts to detect and measure various substances. It finds applications in clinical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. Scientists are currently working on creating reliable electrochemical sensing devices that can accurately detect ascorbic acid. Iron sulfide (FeS) has emerged as a promising material for these sensors due to its excellent electrical conductivity, catalytic activity, and stability.  Materials and methods The FeS nanoparticles were synthesized through the hydrothermal method of synthesis. The glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with a surface area of 0.071 cm2 was modified with FeS before the working electrode was mechanically polished with 1 µm, 0.3 µm, and 0.05 µm alumina pastes for mirror finishing. Then it was subjected to ultrasonication in double distilled water for a few minutes to clean the surface of GCE. The FeS suspension was prepared by dispersing 5 mg of FeS in 10 mL of ethanol during 20 minutes of ultrasonic agitation then the GCE was coated with 10 µL of the suspension by drop coating method and dried in air. Results In this study, FeS nanoparticles were synthesized by the hydrothermal method of synthesis, and it was tested for their electrochemical sensing properties by various tests. Based on the field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) analysis, scan rate effect test, cyclic voltammetric test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analysis done and results obtained, it was seen that the synthesized FeS nanoparticles are highly pure and have a crystalline structure. FeS has an even morphology. The synthesized particles also showed highly sensitive and specific sensing toward ascorbic acid when compared to unmodified 10.1 µA electrodes with a sensing value of 12.51 µA, thereby fulfilling the aim of this study. Conclusion Based on the outcomes of the diverse tests carried out, it is evident that the sample displayed a high crystalline nature as indicated by the XRD test. Additionally, the sample exhibited a uniform morphology, exceptional stability, and remarkable sensitivity. The developed FeS-based electrochemical sensor was found to be exceptionally pure and showed excellent performance, showcasing both high sensitivity and selectivity toward ascorbic acid.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in genetic disorder management mark a transformative era in healthcare. This study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to using genetic services among the Egyptian population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was used to achieve the aim of the study. A convenient sample was used to involve 385 residents of Damanhur City and Beni-Suef City to represent Upper and Lower Egypt. A validated questionnaire covering socio-demographic details, genetic knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to using genetic services was used. RESULTS: Regarding genetic knowledge, 70.9% of the participants reported an unsatisfactory level of knowledge about genetics. Furthermore, 67.6% expressed a negative attitude toward genetic services. Concerns about whether the test result is positive were the most common obstacle, cited by 64.94% of participants, followed by cost, which 60.78% of people found to be a major barrier. Significant associations emerge between socio-demographic factors and awareness levels. CONCLUSION: The findings illuminate significant gaps in knowledge and attitude levels where less than a third of the participants had a satisfactory level of knowledge and about one-third had a positive attitude regarding genetic testing. Barriers such as concerns about treatment strategies, financial constraints, and conflict with personal beliefs emerge as critical obstacles. The identified associations between socio-demographic factors and awareness levels underscore the need for targeted interventions tailored to specific demographic groups. RECOMMENDATIONS: This study recommends developing and implementing culturally sensitive awareness campaigns about genetics tailored to the specific demographic characteristics of the Egyptian population.

ABSTRACT

Background This study investigates Merremia emarginata's curative effectiveness against colon cancer cells. M. emarginata, often known as Elika jemudu, is a Convolvulaceae family plant. The inhibitory ability of anticancer herbal extracts against cancer cell growth and mediators is tested.  Aim This study aims to evaluate the potent anticancer activity of M. emarginata against colon cancer cell line (HT-29). Materials and methods M. emarginata leaves were gathered and processed using solvent extraction. Anticancer activity on colon cancer cells was measured using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) test and cysteine aspartic acid protease-3 (caspase 3), B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), and B-cell lymphoma-extra large (Bcl-xL) mRNA expressions. The data was reported as the mean ± SD of three separate experiments done in triplicate. The statistical analysis was carried out using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), with a p-value less than 0.05 indicating statistical significance. Results The cell viability test showed a gradual decrease in cell growth and proliferation as the concentration increased. The ethanolic extract of M. emarginata was found to be cytotoxic against colon caller cell lines. The extract was able to induce apoptosis of cancer as revealed by Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, and caspase-3 (p<0.05 and p<0.001) signaling pathways. Conclusion M. emarginata extracts showed good anticancer activity against colon cancer cell lines. Further work is required to establish and identify the chemical constituent responsible for its anticancer activity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Resveratrol (Res) is a bifunctional compound found in numerous plants, including grapes and mulberries. Nanotechnology has promising applications in medicine. The ability of various nanomaterials to serve as radiosensitizers against tumor cells were reported in several manuscripts. The present investigation aimed to assess the antitumor and radiosensitizing effects of Res-CMCNPs on EAC-bearing mice.

Methods: Res-CMCNPs have been developed using the CMC emulsification cross-linking technique. Entrapment efficiency (%), particle size, Polydispersity index and ZETA potential, UV, FTIR spectra, and drug release were evaluated and described for RES-CMCNPs. The radiosensitizing properties of RES-CMCNPs were also evaluated in vitro and in vivo against EAC-carrying rodents. The LD50 of Res-CMCNPs was estimated and its 1/20 LD50 was prepared for treating EAC transplanted mice.

Results: The results revealed that the Res-CMCNPs exhibited a high entrapment efficiency (85.46%) and a size of approximately 184.60 ±17.36 nm with zeta potential value equals -51.866 mv. Also, the UV spectra of Res and Res-CMCNPs have strong absorption at 230 and 250 nm. The percentage of resveratrol release at pHs 5.8 and 7.4 was found to be 56.73% and 51.60 %, respectively, after 24 h at 100 rpm. Also, the FTIR analysis confirmed the chemical stability of resveratrol in Res-CMCNPs cross-linking. The IC50 values of Res-CMCNPs against EAC cells viability were 32.99, 25.46, and 22.21 µg after 24-, 48- and 72 h incubation, respectively, whereas those of ResCMCNPs in combination with γ-irradiation after 6-, 10 and 12-mins exposure were 24.07, 16.06 and 7.48 µg, respectively. Also, the LD50 of Res-CMCNPs was 2180 mg/kg.b.w. The treatment of EAC-bearing mice with Res-CMCNPs plus γ-irradiation improved plasma levels of NO, caspase-3, P53 and NF-kB levels as well as liver MDA, GSH, SOD, CAT, LT-B4, aromatase, Bax, Bcl2 and TGF-ß levels and exhibited more significant anticancer activity than administration of ResCMCNPs and/or exposure to γ-irradiation individually. On the other hand, administration of ResCMCNPs in combination with γ-irradiation attenuated liver mRNAs (21, 29b, 181a, and 451) gene expression.

Conclusion: Grafting resveratrol onto carboxymethyl chitosan appears to be a promising strategy for cancer therapy as a radiosensitizer by potentiating tumor cells' sensitivity to radiation by improving levels of proinflammatory features and antioxidant biomarkers.

ABSTRACT

Naringenin, a natural dihydrochalcone flavonoid, exhibits diverse pharmacological properties. This study investigates the hypolipidemic effects of Nar-NPs on obese mice. The characteristics of Nar-NPs, including morphology, particle size, zeta potential, UV-vis, and FT-IR spectra, were examined. The anti-obesity properties of Nar-NPs were evaluated in obese rats, considering LD50, 1/20 LD50, and 1/50 LD50 for treatment preparation. Results indicated that synthesized Nar-NPs were uniform, spherical, and well-dispersed, with a size of 130.06 ± 1.98 nm and with a zeta potential of -25.6 ± 0.8 mV. Nar-NPs exhibited enhancement in the cumulative release of naringenin (56.87 ± 2.45 %) as compared to pure naringenin suspension 87.83 ± 1.84 % in 24 h of the study. The LD50 of Nar-NPs was determined as 412.5 mg/kg.b.w. HFD induced elevated glycemic, oxidative stress, and inflammatory biomarkers while reducing HDL-C, GSH, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels. Administration of Nar-NPs significantly mitigated body weight, glucose, insulin, leptin, TC, TG, SREBP1c, pAMPK, PPAR-α, as well as vanin-1, MCP-1, and iNOS mRNA gene expression. Histological investigations supported the biochemical and PCR findings. In a nutshell, the study suggests that the Nar-NPs could serve as a promising and viable pharmacological strategy for the treatment of obesity-related disorders.

ABSTRACT

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic rheumatic autoimmune condition that can cause a wide range of symptoms and problems that may affect the health-related quality of life. The main objective of the study was to assess the SLE burden by exploring the effect of the disease on health-related quality of life. The study consisted of 29 female SLE patients and 27 healthy female controls; they were matched for age and parity. A 36-item Short Form health survey questionnaire (SF-36) was used to collect data from participants through face-to-face interviews and to assess their health-related quality of life. SF-36 summary scores for the physical and mental components were decreased in the studied patients compared with controls; PCS was 28.81 ± 16.63, 77.25 ± 15.75 for cases and controls, respectively; and MCS was 32.75 ± 18.69, and 78.75 ± 10.63 for cases and controls, respectively (p < 0.05). The high correlation between the two dimensions characterizes this decrease. SLE negatively affected the quality of life of the patients. Measures such as lifestyle modifications, physical activity, and a healthy diet should be taken to improve the health-related quality of life in SLE patients. In addition, raising the patient's awareness about the disease and its consequences could help to cope with the illness and engage in social and physical activities.

ABSTRACT

The escalating global health challenge posed by infections prompts the exploration of innovative solutions utilizing MXene-based nanostructures. Societally, the need for effective antimicrobial strategies is crucial for public health, while scientifically, MXenes present promising properties for therapeutic applications, necessitating scalable production and comprehensive characterization techniques. Here we review the versatile physicochemical properties of MXene materials for combatting microbial threats and their various synthesis methods, including etching and top-down or bottom-up techniques. Crucial characterization techniques such as XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM/TEM, FTIR, XPS, and BET analysis provide insightful structural and functional attributes. The review highlights MXenes' diverse antimicrobial mechanisms, spanning membrane disruption and oxidative stress induction, demonstrating efficacy against bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Despite translational hurdles, MXene-based nanostructures offer broad-spectrum antimicrobial potential, with applications in drug delivery and diagnostics, presenting a promising path for advancing infection control in global healthcare.

ABSTRACT

Conventional channel-based microfluidic platforms have gained prominence in controlling the bottom-up formation of phospholipid based nanostructures including liposomes. However, there are challenges in the production of liposomes from rapidly scalable processes. These have been overcome using a vortex fluidic device (VFD), which is a thin film microfluidic platform rather than channel-based, affording ∼110 nm diameter liposomes. The high yielding and high throughput continuous flow process has a 45° tilted rapidly rotating glass tube with an inner hydrophobic surface. Processing is also possible in the confined mode of operation which is effective for labelling pre-VFD-prepared liposomes with fluorophore tags for subsequent mechanistic studies on the fate of liposomes under shear stress in the VFD. In situ small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) established the co-existence of liposomes ∼110 nm with small rafts, micelles, distorted micelles, or sub-micelle size assemblies of phospholipid, for increasing rotation speeds. The equilibria between these smaller entities and ∼110 nm liposomes for a specific rotational speed of the tube is consistent with the spatial arrangement and dimensionality of topological fluid flow regimes in the VFD. The prevalence for the formation of ∼110 nm diameter liposomes establishes that this is typically the most stable structure from the bottom-up self-assembly of the phospholipid and is in accord with dimensions of exosomes.

Background and objective There is scarce data on diabetic patients' awareness, attitude, and barriers to utilization regarding the artificial pancreas. In light of this, the current study aimed to explore the awareness, attitudes, and perceived barriers to utilization of the artificial pancreas experienced by diabetic patients. Methods A cross-sectional study design was employed to achieve the aim of the study. The study was conducted in Damanhur city, the Beheira Governorate, Egypt. The convenience sampling technique was used to include 385 diabetic patients. The researchers designed an interview questionnaire comprising four parts to collect data about knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to utilization. Results The findings showed that 61% of the participants had a satisfactory level of overall knowledge. Regarding overall attitude, 64.1% of participants exhibited a positive attitude toward the artificial pancreas. The data indicated that 37.7% of participants identified the associated high cost as a significant barrier. Additionally, 23.3% expressed concerns about the lack of healthcare provider support, 21.5% had reservations regarding maintenance, and 17.5% felt limited by their technical skills. Conclusions The study revealed a notable satisfactory level of knowledge and attitudes among about two-thirds of participants regarding the artificial pancreas. Concerns about the high cost emerged as a predominant barrier followed by a lack of healthcare provider support. Empowering both healthcare providers and patients through ongoing educational initiatives can play a pivotal role in fostering a positive attitude and addressing concerns related to artificial pancreas technology.

BACKGROUND:  An assessment of Suaeda monoica extract's antimicrobial and antioxidant properties was undertaken in light of its possible application as an oral care product. The maintenance of optimal dental health is just as important as overall wellness. Food particles become trapped in the mouth cavity, making it easy for oral bacteria to infect. AIM:  The study sought to ascertain the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of salt marsh Suaeda monoica extract. MATERIALS AND METHODS:  Leaves of Suaeda monoica, collected, dried and powdered, were dissolved in 70% methanol and the extract of 25-100 µg/ml was analyzed for antioxidant activity through total antioxidant assay, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and total reducing power. Suaeda monoica antibacterial activity was also performed and the minimum inhibitory concentration was determined for 75 µg/ml, 100µg/ml, and 150 µg/ml concentrations and tetracycline in 10mcg/disc as a control against three different oral pathogens: Staphylococcus mutans, Streptococcus aureus, and Klebsiella spp. RESULTS:  At varying concentrations of 75 mg/ml to 150 mg/ml, Suaeda monoica extracts are efficacious with varying concentrations against the investigated bacterial strains. In the present study, in the DPPH assay, total reducing power, and total antioxidant activity assay, there was an increase in inhibitory percentage as the concentration increased from 25-100 µg/ml, showing maximum inhibition at 100 µg/ml concentration. CONCLUSION:  The results of the investigation show that Suaeda monoica has significant antibacterial and antioxidant activity in a concentration-dependent manner and can be potentially used as an oral care agent after it is assessed for clinical use.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a new algorithm for recommending movies to viewers has been proposed. To do this, the suggested method employs data mining techniques. The proposed method includes three steps for generating recommendations: "preprocessing of user profile information," "feature extraction," and "recommendation." In the first step of proposed method, the user information will be examined and transformed into a form that can be handled in the next phases. In the second step of the proposed method, user attributes are then extracted as a collection of their individual qualities, as well as the average rating of each user for various genres. The bee colony optimization algorithm is then used to select the optimal features. Finally, in the third step of the proposed method, the ratings of similar users are utilized to offer movies to the target user, and the similarities between various users are determined using the characteristics calculated for them, as well as the Euclidean distance criteria. The proposed method was evaluated using the MovieLens database, and its output was assessed in terms of precision and recall criteria; these results show that the proposed method will increase the precision by an average of 1.39% and the recall by 0.8% compared to the compared algorithms.

OBJECTIVES: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the most prevalent cause of myocardial fibrosis and the leading cause of mortality from cardiovascular disease. The goal of this work was to synthesize Balanites aegyptiaca oil-silver nanoparticles (BAO-Ag-NPs) and evaluate their cardioprotective effect against ISO-induced myocardial infarction in rats, as well as their mechanism. METHODS: BAO was isolated, and the unsaturated fatty acids were estimated. BAO-Ag-NPs was prepared, LD50 was calculated to evaluate its cardioprotective activity against ISO (85 mg/kg)- induced AMI. Different doses of BAO-Ag-NPs (1/50 LD50; 46.6 mg/kg.b.w and 1/20 LD50; 116.5 mg) were received to the rats. RESULTS: The total fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids generated by BAO were 909.63 and 653.47 mg/100 g oil, respectively. Oleic acid methyl ester, 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester, and 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid methyl ester were the predominant ingredients, with concentrations of 107.6, 243.42, and 256.77 mg/100 g oil, respectively. According to TEM and DLS examinations, BAO-Ag-NPs have a size of 38.20±2.5 nm and a negative zeta potential of -19.82 ± 0.30 mV, respectively. The LD50 of synthesized BAO-Ag-NPs is 2330 mg. On the other hand, BAO-Ag-NPs reduce myocardial necrosis by lowering increased BNP, cTnI, CK-MB, TC, TG, MDA, MMP2, TGF-ß1, PGE2, and IL-6 levels. Furthermore, BAO-Ag-NPs inhibit the expression of ET-1, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 genes. BAO-Ag-NPs given to ISO-treated rats enhance HDL-C, CAT, and GSH levels when compared to the ISO-treated group of rats. Histopathological findings suggested that BAO-Ag-NPs enhance cardiac function by increasing posterior wall thickness in heart tissues. CONCLUSION: BAO-Ag-NPs protect against AMI in vivo by regulating inflammation, excessive autophagy, and oxidative stress, as well as lowering apoptosis via suppression of the ET-1, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 signaling pathways.

ABSTRACT

Genetic improvement mainly depends on the level of genetic variability present in the population, and the degree of genetic diversity in a population largely determines the rate of genetic advancement. For analyzing genetic diversity and determining cultivar identities, a molecular marker is a useful tool. Using 30 SSR (simple sequence repeat) and 30 RAPD (randomly amplified polymorphic DNA) markers, this study evaluated the genetic divergence of 17 mango cultivars. The effectiveness of the two marker systems was evaluated using their genetic diversity characteristics. Additionally, the effects of SM (simple matching) and Dice similarity coefficients and their effects on mango clustering were evaluated. The findings showed that SSR markers generated 192 alleles, all of which were polymorphic (100%). With RAPD markers, 434 bands were obtained, 361 of which were polymorphic (83%). The average polymorphic information content (PIC) for RAPD and SSR was 0.378 and 0.735, respectively. Using SSR markers resulted in much higher values for other genetic diversity parameters compared to RAPD markers. Furthermore, grouping the genotypes according to the two similarity coefficients without detailed consideration of these coefficients could not influence the study results. The RAPD markers OPA_01, OPM_12 followed by OPO_12 and SSR markers MIAC_4, MIAC_5 followed by mMiCIR_21 were the most informative in terms of describing genetic variability among the cultivars under study; they can be used in further investigations such as genetic mapping or marker-assisted selection. Overall, 'Zebda' cultivar was the most diverse of the studied cultivars.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of single-incision mini-sling in the surgical treatment of postmenopausal urodynamic stress urinary incontinence (SUI) compared to the standard trans-obturator mid-urethral sling. Material and methods: This prospective study was carried out in two tertiary centres; Al-Azhar University Maternity & Urology Hospitals. A total of 120 postmenopausal women with urodynamic SUI were randomized to undergo either single-incision mini-sling (n = 60) or standard trans-obturator mid-urethral sling procedure (n = 60) from May 2019 until Oct 2021. Main outcome measures: efficacy was evaluated utilizing objective cure rate (cough stress test) and subjective cure rate (Sandvik incontinence severity index and International Consultations on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form), intraoperative and postoperative complications, and postoperative pain (using a visual analogue scale). Results: The single-incision mini-sling (SIMS) and transobturator tape (TOT) groups had no statistically significant difference in subjective and objective cure rates (p > 0.05). Compared with the transvaginal tape O group, patients in the SIMS group had significantly less postoperative pain, shorter operative duration, and less intraoperative blood loss (all p-values < 0.05). No significant difference in perioperative complications was observed between both groups. Conclusions: Single-incision mini-sling was superior to TOT in postmenopausal as SIMS is of similar effectiveness, more safe and minimally invasive with earlier ambulance.

BACKGROUND: Moraxella catarrhalis is the most common gram-negative bacteria pathogen that affects the human. The current study was carried out to investigate M. catarrhalis infection and how it modulates some biomarkers. METHODS: The samples were collected from 100 patients diagnosed with respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, otitis media, and tonsillitis. Cultural characteristics were for the colonies cultured on blood and hot blood media. Microscopic method, biochemical tests, and Vitek 2 system was tested and they showed that ten isolates were M. catarrhalis. RESULTS: Out of 10 isolates, 8 isolates (80%) were ß-lactamase-producing. The sensitivity of the isolates was deter-mined against seven antibiotics, and they showed multidrug resistance (MDR). All isolates showed 100% resistance to Ampicillin and Ceftazidime; however, the isolates showed less resistance to Meropenem and Imipenem. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine the levels of Anti-DNA, IgM, IgG, IL-1ß and hs-CRP in the patient serum. The infected serum with M. catarrhalis showed normal levels of Anti-DNA and IgM compared to control group, while the serum with high levels of IgG, IL-1ß, and hs-CRP were recorded (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The multi-antibiotic resistance of M. catarrhalis plays an important role in raising pro-inflammatory markers such as IgG, IL-1ß, and hs-CRP levels, which may subsequently affect the respiratory tract.

Salinity is a widespread abiotic stress that devastatingly impacts wheat growth and restricts its productivity worldwide. The present study is aimed at elucidating biochemical, physiological, anatomical, gene expression analysis, and agronomic responses of three diverse wheat genotypes to different salinity levels. A salinity treatment of 5000 and 7000 ppm gradually reduced photosynthetic pigments, anatomical root and leaf measurements and agronomic traits of all evaluated wheat genotypes (Ismailia line, Misr 1, and Misr 3). In addition, increasing salinity levels substantially decreased all anatomical root and leaf measurements except sclerenchyma tissue upper and lower vascular bundle thickness compared with unstressed plants. However, proline content in stressed plants was stimulated by increasing salinity levels in all evaluated wheat genotypes. Moreover, Na+ ions content and antioxidant enzyme activities in stressed leaves increased the high level of salinity in all genotypes. The evaluated wheat genotypes demonstrated substantial variations in all studied characters. The Ismailia line exhibited the uppermost performance in photosynthetic pigments under both salinity levels. Additionally, the Ismailia line was superior in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase activity (CAT), peroxidase (POX), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzymes followed by Misr 1. Moreover, the Ismailia line recorded the maximum anatomical root and leaf measurements under salinity stress, which enhanced its tolerance to salinity stress. The Ismailia line and Misr 3 presented high up-regulation of H+ATPase, NHX2 HAK, and HKT genes in the root and leaf under both salinity levels. The positive physiological, anatomical, and molecular responses of the Ismailia line under salinity stress were reflected on agronomic performance and exhibited superior values of all evaluated agronomic traits.

ABSTRACT

Aims: To evaluate the outcomes of the exposure versus non-exposure of the RLN during thyroidectomy for benign thyroid diseases. Materials and methods: A prospective study for patients who underwent thyroidectomy for benign diseases. They were classified into two groups, group 1 (the exposed group) and group 2 (the non-exposed group) of the RLN. History, examination, laboratory and radiological investigations as well as intra and post-operative details were recorded. Results: 97 patients were included in the study, group 1 (63 patients) while group 2 (34 patients). The median age of both groups was 40 (for group 1) and 42 (for group 2) respectively. There was no significant difference regarding the gender of the patients (P = 0.089) and the type of surgery (P = 0.234). The duration of surgery as well as the amount of intraoperative blood loss were equal with no significant difference (P = 0.791) (P = 0.225). Hematoma was detected in three patients in the exposed group while RLN injury was detected in 5 patients in total (2 in group 1 and 3 in group 2) without any significant difference. There was significant hypocalcemia in favor of the non-exposed group (P = 0.001). Regarding the postoperative hospital stay, there was no significant difference between both groups (P = 0.720). Conclusions: Exposure versus non-exposure of the RLN is still considered a matter of debate but precautions during dissection are a very useful maneuver. Meanwhile, it is better to expose the nerve with meticulous dissection and preservation of the parathyroid gland vascularity.
