ABSTRACT

Coccidiosis poses significant hazards to animals, particularly in terms of compromised health, reduced productivity, and economic losses in livestock farming. The conventional treatments for coccidiosis often involve synthetic drugs, contributing to concerns about drug resistance and environmental impact. The pressing need for eco-friendly alternatives is highlighted in this study, emphasizing the importance of exploring medicinal plants like Cassia alata leaf extracts (CAE) against Eimeria papillata-induced infection in mice. The CAE exhibited significant phenolic (2.17 ± 0.03 g/100 g) and flavonoid (0.14 ± 0.01 g/100 g) content and demonstrated notable antioxidant activity. In infected mice, the CAE treatment led to a substantial reduction in oocyst output (~6 fold), ameliorating necrotic enteritis and inflammatory changes in the jejunum. Additionally, CAE treatment increased goblet cell numbers (9.3 ± 0.1 / villus) and decreased macrophage infiltration in the intestinal villi. Molecular analyses revealed CAE's positive modulation of MUC2 gene and notably reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (specifically IL-1ß, IL-10, and IFN-γ) when contrasted with the infected cohort. Furthermore, CAE treatment significantly reduced nitric oxide levels (44.03 ± 2.4 µmol/mg), showcasing its anti-inflammatory properties. The findings of this study not only contribute to the understanding of CAE's therapeutic potential but also underscore the importance of seeking eco-friendly alternatives in the face of coccidiosis challenges, addressing both the well-being of animals and the sustainability of agricultural practices. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Cassia alata extract (CAE) exhibited significant phenolic and flavonoid content, displaying notable antioxidant activity. In infected mice, CAE treatment led to a substantial reduction in oocyst output, ameliorating necrotic enteritis and inflammatory changes in the jejunum. CAE treatment increased goblet cell numbers and decreased macrophage infiltration in the intestinal villi, while molecular analyses revealed its positive modulation of the MUC2 gene and notable reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokine levels. ABSTRACT

In the last few decades, researchers have thoroughly studied the use of plants in Palestine, one of them is Cyclamen persicum Mill. (C. persicum). Cyclamen persicum has been historically cultivated since the 1700s due to its tuber. The tuber is known to stimulate the nasal receptors, thus triggering the sensory neurons. Cyclamen persicum has anti-inflammatory effects, reduces cholesterol levels, treats diabetes, and inhibits tumor growth. In this respect, in-vitro examination of antibacterial and anticancer activities and antioxidative potency of C. persicum ethanolic extract were evaluated. The antioxidative potency of the extracted plant material was determined spectrophotometrically using the DPPH free radical scavenging method and the HPLC-PDA method to evaluate its total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC). The experimental results revealed weak antibacterial activity of C. persicum extract against both gram negative (E. coli) and gram positive (Streptococcus aureus and S. aureus) bacterial strains, with the zones of inhibition found to be less than 8 mm. On the other hand, powerful activity against MCF7 breast cancer as well as HT29 colon cancer cell lines was obtained. The findings also revealed potent inhibition of free radicals and the presence of maximal levels of natural products such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which supportits biological activities and powerful ability to scavenge free radicals. HPLC results showed the presence of numerous flavonoid and phenolic compounds such as rutin, chlorogenic acid, kaempferol, trans-cinnamic acid, quercetin, sinapic acid, and p-coumaric acid.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: This study evaluated the phytochemical screening, antioxidant capacity, and in vitro anticancer activities of four plants namely, Gypsophila capillaris, Anabasis lachnantha, Haloxylon salicornicum, and Horwoodia dicksoniae which belong to four different families: Caryophyllaceae, Amaranthaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Brassicaceae, respectively. The total phenolics, anthocyanins, saponins, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and DPPH assays were determined by spectrophotometer. In vitro anticancer activity was assessed using two human cancer cell lines; hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG-2) and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) to estimate the inhibition concentration 50 % (IC50). The results showed that H. dicksoniae has the highest concentrations of phenolics and saponins, while H. salicornicum has the highest DPPH. The highest concentration of TAC was found in G. capillaries. Among the tested extracts, G. capillaries and H. salicornicum have the potential activity against MCF-7 and HepG-2 cell lines in vitro. The content of polyphenols in G. capillaries was profiled by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The highest concentration among the phenolic compounds was chlorogenic (60.8 µg/ml) while the highest concentration among the flavonoid compounds was hesperidin (1444.92 µg/ml). In summary, G. capillaries and H. salicornicum extracts have potent anticancer activity against HepG-2 and MCF-7 cell lines.


Este estudio evaluó la detección fitoquímica, la capacidad antioxidante y las actividades anticancerígenas in vitro de cuatro plantas, Gypsophila capillaris, Anabasis lachnantha, Haloxylon salicornicum y Horwoodia dicksoniae, que pertenecen a cuatro familias diferentes: Caryophyllaceae, Amaranthaceae, Chenopodiaceae y Brassicaceae, respectivamente. Los ensayos de fenólicos totales, antocianinas, saponinas, capacidad antioxidante total (TAC) y DPPH se determinaron mediante espectrofotómetro. La actividad anticancerígena in vitro se evaluó utilizando dos líneas celulares de cáncer humano; carcinoma hepatocelular (HepG-2) y adenocarcinoma de mama (MCF- 7) para estimar la concentración de inhibición del 50 % (IC50). Los resultados indicaron que H. dicksoniae tiene las concentraciones más altas de fenólicos y saponinas, mientras que H. salicornicum tiene el DPPH más alto. La mayor concentración de TAC se encontró en G. capillaries. Entre los extractos probados, G. capillaries y H. salicornicum tienen actividad potencial contra líneas celulares MCF-7 y HepG-2 in vitro. El contenido de polifenoles en G. capillaries se perfiló mediante cromatografía líquida de alta resolución (HPLC). La concentración más alta entre los compuestos fenólicos fue clorogénica (60,8 µg/ml), mientras que la concentración más alta entre los compuestos flavonoides fue la hesperidina (1444,92 µg/ml). En resumen, los extractos de Gypsophila capillaris y H. salicornicum tienen una potente actividad anticancerígena contra las líneas celulares HepG-2 y MCF-7.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The in vivo efficacy of ultrasonicated Rosmarinus officinalis ethanolic extract (UROEE) and its chitosan-loaded nanoparticles (UROEE-CsNPs) was investigated as a dietary prophylactic agent and as a therapeutic treatment against Eimeria tenella infected broiler chickens. METHODS: Chickens were infected with 4 × 104 E. tenella oocysts at 21 days old for primary infection and with 8 × 104 oocysts at 35 days old for secondary infection. Eleven experimental groups were conducted. Dietary addition of 100 mg/kg UROEE and 20 mg/kg for CsNPs as well as UROEE-CsNPs were included for prophylactic groups from day 1 to 42. The same doses were used for therapeutic treatment groups for 5 constitutive days. Oocyst output in feces was counted. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies were conducted. Gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines as IFN-γ, IL-1ß and IL-6 as well as anti-inflammatory cytokines as IL-10 and TGF-ß4 was analyzed using semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR. RESULTS: The results showed an efficacy of UROEE, CsNPs and UROEE-CsNPs in reduction of oocyst excretion and improving the cecal tissue architecture. CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes protein expression were reduced. E. tenella infection lead to upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines as IFN-γ, IL-1ß, IL-6 and anti-inflammatory cytokines as TGF-ß4 following primary infection, while their expression was downregulated following secondary infection. CONCLUSION: The dietary prophylactic additives and therapeutic treatments with UROEE, CsNPs and UROEE-CsNPs could decrease the inflammatory response to E. tenella as indicated by oocyst output reduction, histopathological improvements, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells protein expression reduction as well as reducing mRNA expression levels of the tested cytokines following primary and secondary infections. Consequently, these results will help to develop better-combating strategies for the control and prevention of coccidiosis on poultry farms as a dietary prophylactic agent or as a therapeutic treatment.

ABSTRACT

Intrauterine development is crucial for life-long health; therefore, elucidation of its key regulators is of interest for their potential prognostic and therapeutic implications. Originally described as a membrane-bound anti-aging protein, Klotho has evolved as a regulator of numerous functions in different organ systems. Circulating Klotho is generated by alternative splicing or active shedding from cell membranes. Recently, Klotho was identified as a regulator of placental function, and while Klotho does not cross the placental barrier, increased levels of circulating α-Klotho have been identified in umbilical cord blood compared to maternal blood, indicating that Klotho may also play a role in intrauterine development. In this narrative review, we discuss novel insights into the specific functions of the Klotho proteins in the placenta and in intrauterine development, while summarizing up-to-date knowledge about their structures and functions. Klotho plays a role in stem cell functioning, organogenesis, and haematopoiesis. Low circulating maternal and foetal levels of Klotho are associated with preeclampsia, intra-uterine growth restriction, and an increased perinatal risk for newborns, indicating a potential used of Klotho as biomarker and therapeutic target. Experimental administration of Klotho protein indicates a neuro- and nephroprotective potential, suggesting a possible future role of Klotho as a therapeutic agent. However, the use of Klotho as intervention during pregnancy is yet unproven. Here, we summarize novel evidence, suggesting Klotho as a key regulator for healthy pregnancies and intrauterine development with promising potential for clinical use.

Two-dimensional (2D) metal organic framework (MOF) or metalloporphyrin nanosheets with a stable metal-N4 complex unit present the metal as a single-atom catalyst dispersed in the 2D porphyrin framework. First-principles calculations on the 3d-transition metals in M-TCPP are investigated in this study for their surface-dependent electronic properties including work function and d-band center. Crystal orbital Hamiltonian population (-pCOHP) analysis highlights a higher contribution of the bonding state in the M-N bond and antibonding state in the N-N bond to be essential for N-N bond activation. A linear relationship between ΔGmax and surface electronic properties, N-N bond strength, and Bader charge has been found to influence the rate-determining potential for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) in M-TCPP MOFs. 2D Ti-TCPP MOF, with a kinetic energy barrier of 1.43 eV in the final protonation step of enzymatic NRR, shows exclusive NRR selectivity over competing hydrogen reduction (HER) and nitrogenous compounds (NO and NO2). Thus, Ti-TCPP MOF with an NRR limiting potential of -0.35 V in water solvent is proposed as an attractive candidate for electrocatalytic NRR.

ABSTRACT

Perioperative transient ischemic attacks (PTIAs) are associated with significantly increased rates of postoperative complications such as low cardiac output, atrial fibrillation, and significantly higher mortality in cardiac procedures. The current literature on PTIAs is sparse and understudied. Therefore, we aim to understand the effects of PTIA on hospital utilization, readmission, and morbidity. Using data on all the cardiac procedures at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center from 2011 to 2019, fine and gray analysis was performed to identify whether PTIAs and covariables correlate with increased hospital utilization, stroke, all-cause readmission, Major Adverse Cardiac and Cerebrovascular Events (MACCE), MI, and all-cause mortality. Logistic regression for longer hospitalization showed that PTIA (HR: 2.199 [95% CI: 1.416-3.416] increased utilization rates. Fine and gray modeling indicated that PTIA (HR: 1.444 [95% CI: 1.096-1.902], p < 0.01) increased the rates of follow-up all-cause readmission. However, PTIA (HR: 1.643 [95% CI: 0.913-2.956] was not statistically significant for stroke readmission modeling. Multivariate modeling for MACCE events within 30 days of surgery (HR: 0.524 [95% CI: 0.171-1.605], p > 0.25) and anytime during the follow-up period (HR: 1.116 [95% CI: 0.825-1.509], p > 0.45) showed no significant correlation with PTIA. As a result of PTIA's significant burden on the healthcare system due to increased utilization, it is critical to better define and recognize PTIA for timely management to improve perioperative outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is associated with an increased risk of post-transplant cardiovascular diseases, and several risk factors of PTDM have been shown in the literature. Yet, the relationship between hepatic and pancreatic steatosis with post-transplant diabetes mellitus remains vague. We aimed to evaluate pancreatic steatosis, a novel component of metabolic syndrome, and hepatic steatosis association with post-transplant diabetes mellitus in a single-center retrospective cohort study conducted on kidney transplant recipients. METHOD: We have performed a single-center retrospective cohort study involving all kidney transplant recipients. We have utilized pretransplant Fibrosis-4, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score, and abdominal computed tomography for the assessment of visceral steatosis status. RESULTS: We have included 373 kidney transplant recipients with a mean follow-up period of 32 months in our final analysis. Post-transplant diabetes mellitus risk is associated with older age (p < .001), higher body-mass index (p < .001), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease-fibrosis score (p = .002), hepatic (p < .001) or pancreatic (p < .001) steatosis on imaging and higher pre-transplant serum triglyceride (p = .003) and glucose levels (p = .001) after multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: Our study illustrates that recipients' pancreatic steatosis is an independent predictive factor for post-transplant diabetes mellitus including in kidney transplant patients.

ABSTRACT

The International Diabetes Federation estimates that by 2035, there will be 592 million people with diabetes worldwide, substantially increasing from the 382 million patients with diabetes recorded in 2013. Diabetes-related nephropathy is a leading cause of end-stage renal disease. Recently, the therapeutic use of statins in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) was explored in a series of meta-analyses, which revealed their potential for decreasing mortality and cardiovascular complications in this population, although not in patients undergoing hemodialysis. The current study reviews the current state of knowledge on statin therapy regarding its safety and efficacy concerning renal outcomes in diabetic patients with CKD. The evidence shows that statins may offer a beneficial renoprotective effect in inhibiting the progression of renal function decline. This effect is time-dependent and particularly strong in patients with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy. In addition, whether certain statin types are more beneficial than others in slowing renal function loss and reducing proteinuria remains unclear. Prior research has not examined the impact of high-intensity statin therapy on CKD patient outcomes.

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) was the leading cause of death from an infectious agent worldwide, until the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, ranking above HIV/AIDS. Nigeria ranks 6th among the 30 TB high-burden countries (TB, TB/HIV, DRTB) and 1st in Africa. The estimated case fatality rate (CFR) of TB in Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) is 15%. Objective: To review the Tuberculosis case fatality rate (TCFR) in children diagnosed with TB from 2000-2019 in Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe. Methodology: All cases of Tuberculosis (TB) diagnosed in children using ICD 10 classification were retrieved and analyzed. These included deaths from TB. The mainstay of TB diagnosis was clinical using TB Score (81%), Gene Xpert was 7%, and AFB was 10%. Results: 26,716 children were admitted; 383 had TB out of which 208(54.3%) were males and 175 (45.7%) females. TB constituted 1.4% of Paediatric admissions. Children 0 -5 years constituted 46.7% (179/383) of cases and 11 - 18 years were 31.3% (120/383). Fulani, Hausa, and Tangale constituted 43.6% (167), 21.1% (81), and 6.8% (26) of TB cases respectively. TB admissions were highest between 2015 and 2019 (31.8%). TB adenitis was the most common extrapulmonary TB. Tuberculosis/HIV co-infection accounted for 103(27%), out of which 74% (44) died. Overall TCFR was 15.6%; TCFR was 16.3% in males and 14.8% in females. The TCFR was 46.7% in 0-5yrs; 15% in 6-9yrs and 38.3% in 10-18yrs.Fulani had the highest CFR (11.9%). Tuberculosis CFR was highest between 2010-2014 (30.0%) and lowest in 2005-2009 (21.6%). Conclusion: The Tuberculosis CFR is comparable to SSA CFR.

Introduction: Nigeria recorded 31% of 619,000 malaria deaths globally and accounts for 25-30% of all childhood mortality in the country. Few studies in Nigeria, have reported malaria's case fatality rate over a long period. Objective: To determine Malaria Case Fatality Rate among Children admitted from 2000-2019. Methodology: All severe malaria cases and deaths amongst children aged 0-18 over the last two decades were analysed using ICD-10. The diagnosis was based on clinical and microscopic findings. Results: 26,716 children were admitted, 2494 (9.3%) were diagnosed with malaria and 209 died. Malaria constituted 5.3% (209/3956) of all childhood mortality. Males constituted 58.9 % (1468/2494) while 65% (1642/2494) were aged 0-5 years. Of the malaria admissions, Fulani and Hausa constituted 948(38%) and 438(17.6%) respectively. Admissions were highest in October (15%) and in 2012 (9.6%). The overall malaria CFR was 8.3%; 8.8% in Females (91/1026) and 8.03% in Males P-value <0.05 (X2=54.735); 8.6% in children aged 0-5years, 8.2% in 6-10 years and 7.4% in 11-18 years, P-value <0.05 (X2=893.164). CFR was highest in April (11.4%)and lowest in November (5.2%). Kanuri and Igbo had CFR of 70% and 38.4% respectively while it was lowest in Tera tribe (4.3%), P-value<0.05. The CFR was highest in the year 2004 (22%), 3.5% in 2000 and 2006. Over the years, case fatality rate was 15.9% between 2000-2004, 6.1% from 2005-2009. Between 2010-2015, it was 7.3% and 8.5% from 2016-2019. Conclusion: This study revealed the deadly reality of severe malaria with increased CFR among females, aged 0-5 and the Kanuri tribe.

Introduction: Tetanus is a vaccine-preventable disease, it remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in both neonatal and post-neonatal periods, especially in developing countries with limited health facilities and inadequate vaccination. The overall case fatality rate (CFR) is 13.2% globally, highest in the neonatal period and in sub-Saharan Africa. CFR is 64%, 47%, and 43% in Nigeria, Uganda, and Tanzania respectively. Objectives: To determine the Case Fatality Rate of Childhood tetanus in FTHG from 2000-2019. Methodology: All cases and deaths from tetanus amongst children aged 0-18 years in paediatric medical ward of FTHG over the last two decades diagnosed clinically and classified using ICD-10 were analysed. Results: 95 cases of tetanus out of 26,716 total admissions constituting 0.004%. There were 49 tetanus deaths out of 3956 total childhood deaths (0.012%) over the study period. Males constituted 66% (63/95). 30% (28/95) were aged 0-28 days; 23.1% (22/95) were adolescents. Fulani and Hausa constituted 37% (34/95) and 31% (29/95) respectively. Admission was highest in the dry season 52% (50/95 %). The overall tetanus CFR was 51.6%; 78% of deaths were in males (38/49), 30% in neonates, and 23% in adolescents. CFR was highest during the dry season (67.3%). Hausa and Fulani had CFR of 51% and 40% respectively. P-value <0.05 The CFR was 88% between 2000-2004, 72% from 2005-2009, 71% between 2010-2014 and 33% from 2015-2019. Conclusion: Tetanus CFR is still high among neonates and adolescents. Maternal tetanus vaccine and booster doses in children need strengthening.

Introduction: Pneumonia is the leading cause of death among children globally accounting for an estimated 1.2 million (18%) total deaths annually. The number of childhood-related deaths from pneumonia is approximately 2000-fold higher in developing than in developed countries. Nigeria contributes the highest of pneumonia-related deaths globally. Objectives: To determine the case fatality rates (CFR) of pneumonia from 2000-2019 in paediatric ward, FTHG. Methodology: All cases of pneumonia admissions and deaths in patients aged 0-18 years, using ICD-10 classification, were retrieved and analysed. The mainstay of diagnosis is clinical and/or radiographic features. Results: A total of 26,716 children were admitted during this period, 1151 had pneumonia (4.3%) and 118 died. Males constituted 647 (56.2%) and females 43.8% of the total pneumonia admissions. Children aged 0-5 years had the highest pneumonia admissions, followed by 6-9 years. Admissions were highest in the wet than the dry season. Pneumonia CFR was 10.2%; 10.9% in females and 9.7% in males. Under-5 constituted 84% (969/1151) of pneumonia admission with a CFR of 9.3%. CFR were 10.3% and 21% in 6-10 years, and 11-18 years respectively. The CFR between2000-2004 was 14.1%, 2005-2009:21.1%, 2010-2014:10.2% and 2015-2019:7.2%. Kanuri had the highest CFR of 56.2%.(P <0.05) Other ethnic groups were 29.4% in Waja, 25% in Tula, 21.4% in Igbo, 16.6% in Yoruba, 12.1% in Tangale, 10.2% in Hausa, 8.8%in Bolewa and 8.3% in Fulani. The CFR was highest in February20.2%. Conclusion: Pneumonia Case fatality is high.

ABSTRACT

Metal-Organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered for various gas storage and separation applications. Theoretically, there are an infinite number of MOFs that can be created; however, a finite amount of resources are available to evaluate each one. Computational methods can be adapted to expedite the process of evaluation. In the context of CO2 capture, this paper investigates the method of screening MOFs using machine learning trained on molecular simulation data. New descriptors are introduced to aid this process. Using all descriptors, it is shown that machine learning can predict the CO2 adsorption, with an R2 of above 0.9. The introduced Effective Point Charge (EPoCh) descriptors, which assign values to frameworks' partial charges based on the expected CO2 uptake of an equivalent point charge in isolation, are shown to be the second most important group of descriptors, behind the Henry coefficient. Furthermore, the EPoCh descriptors are hundreds of thousands of times faster to obtain compared with the Henry coefficient, and they achieve similar results when identifying top candidates for CO2 capture using pseudo-classification predictions.

ABSTRACT

Governance of the COVID-19 pandemic required decision-makers to make and implement decisions amidst uncertainty, public pressure and time constraints. However, few studies have attempted to assess these decision-making processes empirically during health emergencies. Thus, we aimed to understand governance, defined as the process of decision-making and implementation of decisions, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. We conducted key informant interviews and focus group discussions with national and subnational government officials, civil society organisation (CSO) members, development partners and academic experts. Our study identified several themes on governance and decision-making processes. First, Nigeria established high-level decision-making structures at the federal and state levels, providing clear and integrated multisectoral decision-making mechanism. However, due to the emergence of conflicts between government levels, there is a need to strengthen intergovernmental arrangements. Second, while decision-makers relied on input from academic experts and CSOs, additional efforts are required to engage such stakeholders in decision-making processes, especially during the early stages of health emergencies. Third, Nigeria's previous experiences responding to disease outbreaks aided the overall response, as many capacities and coordination mechanisms for cohesive action were present. Fourth, while decision-makers took a holistic view of scientific, social and economic factors for decision-making, this process was also adaptive to account for rapidly evolving information. Lastly, more efforts are needed to ensure decisions are inclusive, equitable and transparent, and improve overall public trust in governance processes. This study provides insights and identifies opportunities to enhance governance and decision-making processes in health emergency responses, aiding future pandemic preparedness efforts.

ABSTRACT

Systemic hypertension is the most common medical comorbidity affecting the adult population globally, with multiple associated outcomes including cerebrovascular diseases, cardiovascular diseases, vascular calcification, chronic kidney disease, metabolic syndrome and mortality. Despite advancements in the therapeutic field approximately one in every five adult patients with hypertension is classified as having treatment-resistant hypertension, indicating the need for studies to provide better understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and the need for more therapeutic targets. Recent pre-clinical studies have demonstrated the role of the innate and adaptive immune system including various cell types and cytokines in the pathophysiology of hypertension. Moreover, pre-clinical studies have indicated the potential beneficial effects of immunosuppressant medications in the control of hypertension. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether such pathophysiological mechanisms and therapeutic alternatives are applicable to human subjects, while this area of research is undoubtedly a rapidly growing field.

This study presented a detailed investigation into the performance of a plate-frame water gap membrane distillation (WGMD) system for the desalination of untreated real seawater. One approach to improving the performance of WGMD is through the proper selection of cooling plate material, which plays a vital role in enhancing the gap vapor condensation process. Hence, the influence of different cooling plate materials was examined and discussed. Furthermore, two different hydrophobic micro-porous polymeric membranes of similar mean pore sizes were utilized in the study. The influence of key operating parameters, including the feed water temperature and flow rate, was examined against the system vapor flux and gained output ratio (GOR). In addition, the used membranes were characterized by means of different techniques in terms of surface morphology, liquid entry pressure, water contact angle, pore size distribution, and porosity. Findings revealed that, at all conditions, the PTFE membrane exhibits superior vapor flux and energy efficiency (GOR), with 9.36% to 14.36% higher flux at a 0.6 to 1.2 L/min feed flow rate when compared to the PVDF membrane. The copper plate, which has the highest thermal conductivity, attained the highest vapor flux, while the acrylic plate, which has an extra-low thermal conductivity, recorded the lowest vapor flux. The increasing order of GOR values for different cooling plates is acrylic < HDPE < copper < aluminum < brass < stainless steel. Results also indicated that increasing the feed temperature increases the vapor flux almost exponentially to a maximum flux value of 30.36 kg/m2hr. The system GOR also improves in a decreasing pattern to a maximum value of 0.4049. Moreover, a long-term test showed that the PTFE membrane, which exhibits superior hydrophobicity, registered better salt rejection stability. The use of copper as a cooling plate material for better system performance is recommended, while cooling plate materials with very low thermal conductivities, such as a low thermally conducting polymer, are discouraged.

Post-COVID-19 conditions encompass a wide range of health problems, including enteritis, but their association with parasitic infections has not yet been investigated. This study analyzed gastrointestinal symptoms, medical histories, fecal Cryptosporidium oocysts, and the history of COVID-19 infection in patients who attended the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, from January to July 2021. Fecal biomarkers, including H. pylori, occult blood, fecal calprotectin (FCAL), and TNF-a, were measured, and Cryptosporidium spp. genotypes were molecularly characterized among post-COVID-19 patients using RFLP. Preliminary results from 210 post-COVID-19 patients revealed that group 1 (Cryptosporidiumpositive) (n = 49) and group 2 (Cryptosporidium-negative) (n = 161) showed no significant difference in the prevalence rate of diabetes mellitus (DM). While group 2 was linked to diarrhea, only infections with Cryptosporidium post-COVID-19 were related to chronic diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss. A total of 220 healthy subjects served as negative controls. Administering azithromycin, hydroxychloroquine, and ivermectin was significantly related to an increased risk of Cryptosporidium infection in group 1, whereas only azithromycin was more frequently recorded in group 2. Antioxidant supplementation insignificantly affected the incidence of cryptosporidiosis. Cryptosporidiosis with a history of COVID-19 was linked to H. pylori infections, increased inflammatory biomarkers (FCAL and TNF-a), and occult blood when compared with group 2. Cryptosporidium genotype 1 was the most commonly occurring subset in individuals with post-COVID-19. The findings demonstrated that aggravating gastrointestinal manifestations, increased fecal biomarkers and anti-COVID-19 therapeutic interventions are significantly related to the existence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in patients with post-COVID-19, indicating the predominance of.

ABSTRACT

Destruction of the cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) Oocysts is the main target of the work via the improvement effect of the nitazoxanide (NTZ) drug by increasing the drug adsorption process without changing the cell viability. The synthesis of a self-assembly nanocomposite (NCP) of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and NTZ drug was performed successfully via the chemical precipitation methods without utilizing the temperature. Also, the characterization of the fabricated NCP was achieved by different techniques to confirm the natural formation of the NCP. The efficient loading of the NTZ drug on the CMC surface and the release process of NCP was calculated by a UV-Visible spectroscopy device, and the loading efficiency is 37 %. The release efficiency is displayed at 66.3 % after 6 h, and 97 % after 48 h at pH 7.4 with NTZ pure, while the release efficiency of CNC@NTZ at the same pH is 61 % after 6 h, and 86 % after 48 h at pH 7.4. The cytotoxicity of different concentrations of NCP was conducted on normal mouse liver cells (BNL) via the quick screening cytotoxicity method (SRB). The effect of NCP on C. parvum was detected with an in-vivo study in the dark and under sunlight conditions. Compared to the NTZ and CNC, the fabricated NCP was able to destroy 89.3 % of the oocyst wall after 96 h. Moreover, a sporulation inhibition percentage of 53.97 % ± 0.63 % was achieved by a maximum concentration of 7 mg/mL after 9.5 h. The results are very encouraging to use the modified NCP as an alternative NTZ drug, although further research is required in terms of clinical trials.
