ABSTRACT

Systolic anterior motion of the anterior mitral leaflet can persist after ventricular septal myectomy for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, resulting in residual pressure gradients and mitral regurgitation. However, additional procedures for systolic anterior motion involving mitral valve leaflet suturing and resection may lead to future valve disease. Therefore, we adopted posterior papillary muscle suspension, a subvalvular procedure for functional mitral regurgitation, to treat systolic anterior motion without directly intervening in the mitral valve leaflets. Papillary muscle suspension toward the posterior mitral annulus moved the papillary muscles away from the interventricular septum and successfully eliminated the systolic anterior motion and midventricular pressure gradient. In terms of avoiding direct mitral interventions, this procedure is a viable option for systolic anterior motion, especially in cases of very mild mitral regurgitation.

ABSTRACT

C-type lectin receptors (CLRs) elicit immune responses upon recognition of glycoconjugates present on pathogens and self-components. While Dectin-1 is the best-characterized CLR recognizing ß-glucan on pathogens, the endogenous targets of Dectin-1 are not fully understood. Herein, we report that human Dectin-1 is a ligand for CLEC-2, another CLR expressed on platelets. Biochemical analyses revealed that Dectin-1 is a mucin-like protein as its stalk region is highly O-glycosylated. A sialylated core 1 glycan attached to the EDxxT motif of human Dectin-1, which is absent in mouse Dectin-1, provides a ligand moiety for CLEC-2. Strikingly, the expression of human Dectin-1 in mice rescued the lethality and lymphatic defect resulting from a deficiency of Podoplanin, a known CLEC-2 ligand. This finding is the first example of an innate immune receptor also functioning as a physiological ligand to regulate ontogeny upon glycosylation.

ABSTRACT

Hemigrammocypris neglecta is a small-sized cyprinid fish that is endemic to Japan and the sole member of the genus Hemigrammocypris. We examined the osteological features of the species, and its relationships with related genera are discussed. The present data suggest that H. neglecta is most likely the sister taxon of Metzia lineata. This relationship is supported by one possible synapomorphy: the presence of a postepiphysial fontanelle, which is absent in all other Xenocypridinae.

ABSTRACT

We have investigated the initial nucleation process of polythiophene derivatives by molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the role of flexible side chains in the crystallization process. We considered poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), poly(3,3‴-dihexylquarterthiophene) (PQT6), poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT), and poly(3,3‴-didodecylquaterthiophene) (PQT12), in which the lengths and densities of the alkyl side chains are different. In the case of the short side-chain molecules (P3HT and PQT6), the initial nucleation process is based on the following steps. At the beginning, the thiophene rings align and ordering of the main chains commences shortly afterward. Ordering of the flexible side chains is induced after formation of a stacked structure of rigid main chains. In the case of a long and dense side-chain molecule (P3DDT), the initial nucleation process shows different features. The ordering process of the thiophene rings or main chains becomes very slow, while that of side chains becomes fast. In addition, the local order of the main chains becomes lower than those of P3HT and PQT6. These simulation results reveal that long and dense side chains suppress the nucleation process, whereas long but low-density side chains lead to formation of stacked nuclei in a different manner from those observed for short side-chain molecules.

ABSTRACT

The cephalic lateral line canal systems were compared among 12 species of the cyprinid tribe Opsariichthyini. All species were characterized by the separation of the supraorbital canal from both the infraorbital and the temporal canals, and the left side of the supratemporal canal from the right side of the canal. In species of Candidia, Opsariichthys, Parazacco, and Zacco, and Nipponocypris sieboldii the temporal canal was separated from the preoperculomandibular canal. In Nipponocypris temminckii and N. koreanus, the temporal canal was connected to the preoperculomandibular canal. Separation of the left and right sides of the supratemporal canal is a possible synapomorphy of the opsariichthyin cyprinids. Opsariichthys uncirostris and O. bidens are unique among the opsariichthyins in that the connection between the infraorbital and temporal canals is retarded. The variation in arrangement of the cephalic lateral line canal system can be used as diagnostic characters for the opsariichthyin species.

ABSTRACT

Curdlan is a polysaccharide that is expected to work as a gene carrier. We synthesized chemically cross-linked Curdlan (CCC) gel and examined its characterization. CCC gels were swollen with alkaline water over pH ∼10.2, but shrunk with acid and neutral water. Swelling ratios of the present CCC gels with water were found to be 45 times at the most and dependent on the fraction of cross-linker reagent. These volume phase transition gels that are sensitive to pH are useful and ecological as a biocompatible and biodegradable material.
