ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer develops slowly and may not manifest signs and symptoms at an early stage. It is worth mentioning the factors that can influence the onset of cervical cancer: smoking, early sexual life, multiple sexual partners, use of oral contraceptives, multiparity, low socioeconomic status, among others. An important risk factor for the onset of this disease is HPV infection, a virus associated with most cases of precursor lesions of this type of cancer. It is essential to understand the comprehensiveness of the scope and adherence to the recommended guidelines throughout the national territory. Therefore, health indicators are important management tools that make it possible to evaluate the services offered, measuring the reach of the target population, the supply and access to preventive exams. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the trend of progress in cervical cancer coverage actions in Brazilian capitals from 2016 to 2021. METHOD: This is an ecological study with temporal analysis that used secondary data referring to process indicators for cervical cancer control actions in women aged between 25 and 64 years living in Brazilian capitals between 2016 and 2021. Aspects related to the quality of care in the cervical cancer prevention program were evaluated using databases of the Cancer Information System (SISCAN), available in DATASUS. The indicators used to monitor and evaluate cervical cancer control actions were (i) cervical coverage, (ii) reason for cervical surgery, and (iii) proportion of cervical cancer every 3 years. RESULTS: In 2016, 410,000 tests were performed and notified in the SISCAN system in all Brazilian capitals, with emphasis on Curitiba, with 65,715 tests performed, and Porto Velho, with 174. In 2020, there was a reduction in exams compared to the previous year in all capitals, with the exception of Palmas, which went from 7655 exams to 9604. It was observed that all the capitals studied showed an increase in the annual percentage variation of Pap smear coverage, with the exception of Brasília, Manaus, Porto Alegre and Porto Velho, which did not show a statistically significant increase (APC = 3.01, 2.746, 3.987, 3.69, respectively). When analyzing the performance of oncotic cytology exams in the capitals according to the years 2019 and 2020, it was observed that only Manaus registered an increase in the number of procedures performed, reaching a difference of 56.5% from one year to the next. CONCLUSION: The ecological analysis revealed a worrying drop in the number of tests performed in 2020, reflecting a sharp drop in coverage actions in Brazilian capitals during the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities and highlighted the need for adaptive strategies to maintain essential screening services in times of crisis.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The CA1 region of the hippocampus has an important role in learning and memory. It has been shown that estrogen deficiency may reduce the synaptic density in the region and that hormone replacement therapy may attenuate the reduction. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of estrogen and raloxifene on the synaptic density profile in the CA1 region of the hippocampus in ovariectomized rats. METHODS: Sixty ovariectomized three-month-old virgin rats were randomized into six groups (n = 10). Treatments started either three days (early treatment) or sixty days (late treatment) after ovariectomy. The groups received propylene glycol vehicle (0.5 mL/animal/day), equine conjugated estrogens (50 µg/animal/day), or raloxifene (3 mg/kg/day) either early or late after ovariectomy. The drugs were administered orally by gavage for 30 days. At the end of the treatments, the animals were anesthetized and transcardially perfused with ether and saline solution. The brains were removed and prepared for analysis under transmission electron microscopy and later fixed. RESULTS: Results showed a significant increase in the synaptic density profile of the hippocampal CA1 region in both the early estrogen (0.534 ± 0.026 µ/m2) and the early raloxifene (0.437 ± 0.012 µ/m2) treatment groups compared to the early or late vehicle-treated control groups (0.338 ± 0.038 µ/m2 and 0.277 ± 0.015 µ/m2 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The present data suggest that the raloxifene effect may be lower than that of estrogen, even early or late treatment, on synaptic density in the hippocampus.

ABSTRACT

PCOS is an endocrine disorder characterized by chronic anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries. Its etiology is uncertain. It is debated whether BPA would be a component of the environmental factor in the etiology of PCOS. Contamination by BPA can occur from food packaging (exposure during the diet) and through skin absorption and/or inhalation. It can be transferred to the fetus via the placenta or to the infant via breast milk, and it can be found in follicular fluid, fetal serum, and amniotic fluid. The phenolic structure of BPA allows it to interact with Estrogen Receptors (ERs) through genomic signaling, in which BPA binds to nuclear ERα or Erß, or through nongenomic signaling by binding to membrane ERs, prompting a rapid and intense response. With daily and constant exposure, BPA's tendency to bioaccumulate and its ability to activate nongenomic signaling pathways can alter women's metabolic and reproductive function, leading to hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, chronic inflammatory state, and anovulation and favoring PCOS. The harmful changes caused by BPA can be passed on to future generations without the need for additional exposure because of epigenetic modifications. Not only high BPA levels can produce harmful effects, but at low levels, BPA may be harmful when exposure occurs during the most vulnerable periods, such as the fetal and neonatal periods, as well as during the prepubertal age causing an early accumulation of BPA in the body. Learning how BPA participates in the pathogenesis of PCOS poses a challenge and further studies should be conducted.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The high prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women requires attention and constant review of treatment options. Sacrospinous ligament fixation (SSLF) for apical prolapse has benefits, high efficacy, and low cost. Our objective is to compare anterior and posterior vaginal approach in SSLF in relation to anatomical structures and to correlate them with body mass index (BMI). METHODS: Sacrospinous ligament fixation was performed in fresh female cadavers via anterior and posterior vaginal approaches, using the CAPIO®SLIM device (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA, USA). The distances from the point of fixation to the pudendal artery, pudendal nerve, and inferior gluteal artery were measured. RESULTS: We evaluated 11 cadavers with a mean age of 70.1 ± 9.9 years and mean BMI 22.4 ± 4.6 kg/m2. The mean distance from the posterior SSLF to the ischial spine, pudendal artery, pudendal nerve, and inferior gluteal artery were 21.18 ± 2.22 mm, 17.9 ± 7.3 mm, 19.2 ± 6.8 mm, and 18.9 ± 6.9 mm respectively. The same measurements relative to the anterior SSLF were 19.7 ± 2.7 mm, 18.6 ± 6.7 mm, 19.2 ± 6.9 mm, and 18.3 ± 6.7 mm. Statistical analysis showed no difference between the distances in the two approaches. The distances from the fixation point to the pudendal artery and nerve were directly proportional to the BMI. CONCLUSIONS: There was no difference in the measurements obtained in the anterior and posterior vaginal approaches. A direct correlation between BMI and the distances to the pudendal artery and pudendal nerve was found.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is diagnosed through a patient's Breast Self-Examination (BSE), Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), or para-clinical methods. False negativity of PCM in breast cancer diagnostics leads to a persisting problem associated with breast tumors diagnosed only in advanced stages. As the tumor volume/size at which it becomes invasive is not clear, BSE and CBE play an exceedingly important role in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. The quality and effectiveness of BSE and CBE depend on several factors, among which breast stiffness is the most important one. In this study, the authors present four methods for evaluating breast stiffness pathology during mammography examination based on the outputs obtained during the breast compression process, id est, without exposing the patient to X-Ray radiation. Based on the subjective assessment of breast stiffness by experienced medical examiners, a novel breast stiffness classification was designed, and the best method of its objective measurement was calibrated to fit the scale. Hence, this study provides an objective tool for the identification of patients who, being unable to perform valid BSE, could benefit from an increased frequency of mammography screening. BACKGROUND: Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) is a very prevalent sexual problem, with limited options for treatment. Given that psychological factors are major contributors to the disorder, a therapy such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) may be useful to treat HSDD. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of group CBT on women with HSDD. METHOD: Clinical trial randomized study with 106 women diagnosed with HSDD, who were divided as follows: Group 1 (n = 53) underwent group CBT for 8-weeks, and Group 2 (n = 53), were put on a waiting list and used as a control group. Sexual function was assessed by the Female Sexual Quotient (FSQQ) at the initial interview and after 6-months. Mann Whitney test was used for group comparison. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: demographics, education, sexual history, FSQQ and its domains for sexual function assessment. RESULTS: Both groups had similar characteristics regarding sexual response, self-image, and relationship with a partner at the initial interview. Women undergoing therapy showed significant improvement in sexual function when compared with the control group. The overall FSQQ result showed an average growth of 18.08 points (95% CI 12.87‒23.28) for the therapy group against a decrease of 0.83 points (95% CI 3.43‒1.77) for controls (p < 0.001). The five domains of the questionnaire also exhibited significant improvement in the therapy group: desire and interest (p = 0.003), foreplay (p = 0.003), excitation and tuning (p < 0.001), comfort (p < 0.001), and orgasm and satisfaction (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Group CBT was shown to be an effective tool for treating HSDD.

BACKGROUND: The increasing burden of obesity generates significant socioeconomic impacts for individuals, populations, and national health systems worldwide. The literature on impacts and cost-effectiveness of obesity-related interventions for prevention and treatment of moderate to severe obesity indicate that bariatric surgery presents high costs associated with high effectiveness in improving health status referring to certain outcomes; however, there is a lack of robust evidence at an individual-level estimation of its impacts on multiple health outcomes related to obesity comorbidities. METHODS: The study encompasses a single-centre retrospective longitudinal analysis of patient-level data using micro-costing technique to estimate direct health care costs with cost-effectiveness for multiple health outcomes pre-and post-bariatric surgery. Data from 114 patients who had bariatric surgery at the Hospital of Clinics of the University of Sao Paulo during 2018 were investigated through interrupted time-series analysis with generalised estimating equations and marginal effects, including information on patients' characteristics, lifestyle, anthropometric measures, hemodynamic measures, biochemical exams, and utilisation of health care resources during screening (180 days before) and follow-up (180 days after) of bariatric surgery. RESULTS: The preliminary statistical analysis showed that health outcomes presented improvement, except cholesterol and VLDL, and overall direct health care costs increased after the intervention. However, interrupted time series analysis showed that the rise in health care costs is attributable to the high cost of bariatric surgery, followed by a statistically significant decrease in post-intervention health care costs. Changes in health outcomes were also statistically significant in general, except in cholesterol and LDL, leading to significant improvements in patients' health status after the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Trends multiple health outcomes showed statistically significant improvements in patients' health status post-intervention compared to trends pre-intervention, resulting in reduced direct health care costs and the burden of obesity.

BACKGROUND: The National Policy for Integral Attention to Women's Health Care (PNAISM) was implemented in 2004, with monitoring of potential benefits. One of the life cycles of women contemplated in this health policy was the importance of health care during the climacteric. Prevention and health promotion are actions carried out by the Brazil National Health System and enshrined in health Brazilian policies for women. Thus, our purpose was to identify climacteric women's main causes of death as well as the mortality trends of such causes, especially after implementation of PNAISM. METHODS: An ecological study was conducted from 2018 to 2020. Data were retrieved from the Brazilian Health Department by accessing the mortality information system of the National Health Information, divided into periods 1996-2004 and 2005-2016 the latter to correspond with the implementation of the National Policy. The death records of Brazilian women aged 40 to 64 years who had a designated cause of death were retrieved. Trends and differences between periods were evaluated using linear regression. The significance level was set at 5%. RESULTS: The main causes of death in women from 1996 to 2016 were circulatory system diseases (22.47%, 697,636 deaths), neoplasms (19.69%, 611,495 deaths), respiratory system diseases (5.5%, 170,716 deaths), endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic disorders (5.27%, 163,602 deaths), and digestive system diseases (3.74%, 116.280 deaths). Analyzing the changes in the major causes of death of climacteric women after implementation of the PNAISM we observed that mortality from circulatory system diseases and endocrine and nutritional diseases were significantly declined in post-PNAISM period: (ß = - 3.63; 95% CI - 4.54 to - 2.73 r2 = 0.87; p < 0.001; ß = - 0.51; 95% CI, - 0.71 to - 0.31; R2 = 0.73; p < 0.001, respectively). No changes were observed in mortality from neoplasms and respiratory system diseases in post-PNAISM period (p = 0,765; p = 0,233, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: After implementation of the PNAISM, we observed a downward trend in rates of mortality from diseases of the circulatory and digestive systems and from endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases but stability in the rates of death from neoplasm and respiratory system diseases.

Obesity is associated with numerous diseases, including endometrial disorders in postmenopausal women, such as adenocarcinoma, hyperplasias and endometrial polyps, and the risk of malignant transformation of these structures. The present study evaluated the influence of body mass index (BMI) on cell proliferation (BCL2 and MKI67) in endometrial polyps in postmenopausal women. A prospective cross-sectional study using immunohistochemical analysis of the expression of a cell proliferation marker (MKI67) and an anti-apoptotic gene (BCL2) in endometrial polyps in postmenopausal women was performed. The patients were divided into three groups depending on BMI: i) <24.9 kg/m2 (normal); ii) >25 and <29.9 kg/m2 (overweight); and iii) >30 kg/m2 (obese). The present study analyzed the expression of these markers in relation to polyp size, histological type and time since menopause in 38 patients. The interpretation of MKI67 and BCL2 expression accounted for the percentage of positive cells (scores): 1 (weak), <5% of cells showed expression; 2 (moderate), between 5 and 50%; and 3 (intense), >50%. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad InStat version 3.00 software. ANOVA was used to analyze BCL2 and MKI67 expression. A significance level of P<0.05 was adopted for rejecting the null hypothesis. There was greater glandular expression of MKI67 in obese women than in normal weight women (P=0.02) and greater expression of BCL2 in the stroma of polyps >2 cm (P=0.03). Hyperplastic polyps exhibited hyperexpression of MKI67 (P=0.04) compared with atrophic polyps. No difference in MKI67 and BCL2 expression was identified in the glands and stroma of polyps when comparing overweight and obese postmenopausal patients. The present findings suggest that BMI has an influence on proliferation markers (MKI67) in the polyps of postmenopausal women and that polyps >2 cm exhibit hyperexpression of BCL2 in the stroma.

ABSTRACT

Considering that myths and misconceptions regarding natural procreation spread rapidly in the era of easy access to information and to social networks, adequate counseling about natural fertility and spontaneous conception should be encouraged in any kind of health assistance. Despite the fact that there is no strong-powered evidence about any of the aspects related to natural fertility, literature on how to increase the chances of a spontaneous pregnancy is available. In the present article, the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations (FEBRASGO, in the Portuguese acronym) Committee on Endocrine Gynecology provides suggestions to optimize counseling for non-infertile people attempting spontaneous conception.


Uma vez que mitos e equívocos sobre a procriação natural se espalham rapidamente na era do fácil acesso à informação e às redes sociais, o aconselhamento adequado sobre a fertilidade natural e a concepção espontânea deve ser encorajado em qualquer tipo de assistência à saúde. Apesar do fato de não haver evidências fortes sobre qualquer dos aspectos relacionados à fertilidade natural, existe literatura sobre como aumentar as chances de uma gravidez espontânea. No presente artigo, a Comissão Nacional de Ginecologia Endócrina da Federação Brasileira das Associações de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia (FEBRASGO) oferece sugestões para otimizar o aconselhamento a pessoas que tentam a concepção espontânea, na ausência do diagnóstico de infertilidade.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate three genes associated with puberty timing in girls with central precocious puberty by evaluating the association between polymorphism in the gene sequence codifying the enzymes participating in steroidogenesis, CYP1A1, CYP17, and CYP1B1 and central precocious puberty. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 177 patients was included and divided into two groups: Case group with 73 girls diagnosed with central precocious puberty; Control group with 104 girls with puberty onset after 8 years of age who were followed at the Sector of Gynecology of Childhood and Adolescence, Division of Gynecology Clinic, HC-FMUSP. Polymorphism presence was assessed in the genes involved in estrogen metabolism (CYP1A1, CYP17, and CYP1B1) by the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique using DNA from peripheral blood. RESULTS: No significant difference in the distribution of the CYP1A1 Mspl (p=0.86) and CYP17 (p=0.12) genotypes was detected between the two study groups. As for CYP1B1 Eco571, the mutated C/C genotype was found to be more frequent in the control group than in the case group (p=0.03). CONCLUSION: Our data suggest the CYP1B1 Eco571 gene variant is associated with puberty timing.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of hyperprolactinemia induced by metoclopramide on the endometrium and myometrium of female mice in the proestrus phase. METHODS: 24 female mice were randomly divided in two groups: CtrG/control and ExpG/treated with metoclopramide (6.7 mg/g daily). After 50 days, the animals were sacrificed in the proestrus phase, and the blood was collected to determine the levels of estradiol, progesterone and prolactin. The uterine horns were removed, fixed in 10% formaldehyde and processed before being included in paraffin. Slices of 4 microm were stained by hematoxylin and eosin (H/E). In the morphological analysis, a Carl Zeiss light microscope, with objectives varying from 4 to 400 X was used for each histological slice characterization. In the morphometrical analysis, the superficial epithelium, the lamina propria and the myometrium thickness were evaluated, with the help of an image analyzer (AxionVision - Carl Zeiss) attached to the light microscope (Carl Zeiss). The statistical analysis was done by ANOVA, followed by the Wilcoxon test. P-value was considered as significant, when <0.05. RESULTS: Our findings have shown an increase in the seric levels of prolactin (295.6+/-38.0 ng/mL) and significant decrease in the progesterone levels (11.3+/-0.9 ng/mL) in the ExpG, as compared to the CtrG (45.5+/-5.2 ng/mL and 18.2+/-1.6 ng/mL, respectively; p<0.001). Concerning the seric level of estradiol, significant differences between the groups were not obtained (ExpG=119.1+/-12.3 pg/mL and CtrG=122.7+/-8.4 pg/mL; p=0.418). The morphological study has shown that the uterus from the ExpG presented the endometrium with more developed superficial epithelium and lamina propria, as compared to the CtrG, the same happening with the myometrium. The thickness morphometrical values of the luminal epithelium (8.0+/-1.1 microm) and endometrium (116.2+/-21.1x10(2) microm) from the CtrG were lower than the ones from the ExpG (10.2+/-0.8 microm and 163.2+/-23.3x10(2) microm, respectively) with p<0.05. Nevertheless, data obtained in the myometrium have not shown significant differences between the groups (CtrG=152.2+/-25.2x10(2) microm and ExpG=140.8+/-18.0x10(2) microm). CONCLUSIONS: Data have shown that hyperprolactinemia induced by metoclopramide determines endometrial proliferation and interferes with the ovarian function, mainly in the progesterone production.

OBJETIVO: avaliar o efeito da hiperprolactinemia induzida pela metoclopramida sobre o endométrio e miométrio de camundongos fêmeas na fase de proestro. MÉTODOS: 24 camundongos fêmeas foram divididas aleatoriamente em dois grupos: GCtr/controle e GExp/tratadas com metoclopramida (6,7 µg/g por dia). Após 50 dias, os animais foram sacrificados na fase de proestro, e o sangue foi coletado para determinação dos níveis de estradiol, progesterona e prolactina. Os cornos uterinos foram removidos e fixados em formol a 10 por cento; foram, então, processados para inclusão em parafina. Cortes de 4 µm foram corados pela hematoxilina-eosina (H/E). Na análise morfológica, foi utilizado microscópio de luz, da marca Carl Zeiss, com objetivas variando de 4 a 400 X, para caracterização de cada corte histológico. Na análise morfométrica, foi avaliada a espessura do epitélio superficial, da lâmina própria e do miométrio, com auxílio de um analisador de imagem (AxionVision, Carl Zeiss) acoplado ao microscópio de luz (Carl Zeiss). A análise estatística foi realizada pela ANOVA seguida pelo teste Wilcoxon. O valor de p foi considerado significante quando < 0,05. RESULTADOS: os achados mostraram aumento dos níveis séricos de prolactina (295,6±38,0 ng/mL) e redução significante dos de progesterona (11,3±0,9 ng/mL) no GExp em comparação ao GCtr (45,5±5,2 ng/mL e 18,2±1,6 ng/mL, respectivamente) (p<0,001). Com relação aos níveis séricos de estradiol, não foram obtidas diferenças significantes entre os grupos (GExp=119,1±12,3 pg/mL e o GCtr=122,7±8,4 pg/mL, p=0,418). O estudo morfológico mostrou que o útero do GExp apresentou endométrio com epitélio superficial e lâmina própria mais desenvolvida quando comparado ao GCtr, o mesmo ocorrendo no miométrio. PURPOSE: to evaluate the effect of hyperprolactinemia induced by metoclopramide on the endometrium and myometrium of female mice in the proestrus phase. METHODS: 24 female mice were randomly divided in two groups: CtrG/control and ExpG/treated with metoclopramide (6.7 mg/g daily). After 50 days, the animals were sacrificed in the proestrus phase, and the blood was collected to determine the levels of estradiol, progesterone and prolactin. The uterine horns were removed, fixed in 10 percent formaldehyde and processed before being included in paraffin. Slices of 4 µm were stained by hematoxylin and eosin (H/E). In the morphological analysis, a Carl Zeiss light microscope, with objectives varying from 4 to 400 X was used for each histological slice characterization. In the morphometrical analysis, the superficial epithelium, the lamina propria and the myometrium thickness were evaluated, with the help of an image analyzer (AxionVision - Carl Zeiss) attached to the light microscope (Carl Zeiss). The statistical analysis was done by ANOVA, followed by the Wilcoxon test. P-value was considered as significant, when <0.05. RESULTS: our findings have shown an increase in the seric levels of prolactin (295.6±38.0 ng/mL) and significant decrease in the progesterone levels (11.3±0.9 ng/mL) in the ExpG, as compared to the CtrG (45.5±5.2 ng/mL and 18.2±1.6 ng/mL, respectively; p<0.001). Concerning the seric level of estradiol, significant differences between the groups were not obtained (ExpG=119.1±12.3 pg/mL and CtrG=122.7±8.4 pg/mL; p=0.418). The morphological study has shown that the uterus from the ExpG presented the endometrium with more developed superficial epithelium and lamina propria, as compared to the CtrG, the same happening with the myometrium. BACKGROUND: The impact of hyperprolactinaemia on endometrial function, along with embryo implantation, has been the subject of discussion. This article examines whether experimental hyperprolactinaemia can affect mouse ovarian function, endometrial pinopodes and embryo implantation. METHODS: For pinopode analysis, 60 female mice were randomly divided into two groups: control (vehicle) and experimental [metoclopramide (MCP) 200 microg per day]. Injections were given subcutaneously for 50 days, and then, normally cycling females were housed with male mice for copulation during proestrus. The animals were killed on the fifth day following coitus when the antimesometrium portions of the uterine horns were removed for endometrial analysis. Blood was collected for prolactin (PRL) determination. In the second experiment, 60 female mice were used to evaluate the ovarian function by measuring estrogen and progesterone levels and counting luteal bodies and oocytes in the oviduct and uterus during estrus. RESULTS: The highest pregnancy rates and the largest population of pinopodes were both found in the vehicle group (P<0.01). Estrogen and progesterone levels in MCP-treated mice were lower than those in control mice (P<0.05). Also, the number of implantations was significantly lower in the MCP-treated group compared with the vehicle group after embryo transfer (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: PRL seems to have suppressive effects on ovarian function and the number of pinopodes; conceivably, hyperprolactinaemia has a negative effect on mouse embryo implantation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of isoflavone on the climacteric symptoms (Kupperman Menopausal index), vaginal pH, vaginal cytology (vaginal maturation index) and endometrium (evaluated by ultrasound and biopsy) in postmenopausal women. METHODS: It was a single-center, 6-month, randomized, double-blind, estrogen-controlled trial. Seventy-nine women were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups: isoflavone (n=40): 300 mg of the standardized soy extract with a medium dose of 120 mg isoflavones/day as glycoside and aglycone (60 mg twice a day), or estrogen (n=39): one capsule of 0.625 mg conjugated equine estrogens and other capsule with glucose 0.625 mg (placebo). RESULTS: After treatment, there was a decrease in the symptomatology in both estrogen and isoflavone groups. There was a significant decrease in vaginal pH, an increase in superficial vaginal cells and endometrium proliferation after 3 and 6 months of treatment in the estrogen group, but no differences were observed in the isoflavone group for these variables. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that the daily standardized soy extract with 120 mg isoflavones' effect on symptoms was similar to that from estrogen. Soy isoflavone has no effect on endometrium and vaginal mucosa during the treatment.
