ABSTRACT

Recent breakthroughs in the field of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have opened up unprecedented opportunities for the development of specialized bioactive CNT-polymers for a variety of biosensor applications. The incorporation of bioactive materials, including DNA, aptamers and antibodies, into CNTs to produce composites of bioactive CNTs has attracted considerable attention. In addition, polymers are essential for the development of biosensors as they provide biocompatible conditions and are the ideal matrix for the immobilization of proteins. The numerous applications of bioactive compounds combined with the excellent chemical and physical properties of CNTs have led to the development of bioactive CNT-polymer composites. This article provides a comprehensive overview of CNT-polymer composites and new approaches to encapsulate bioactive compounds and polymers in CNTs. Finally, biosensor applications of bioactive CNT-polymer for the detection of glucose, H2O2 and cholesterol were investigated. The surface of CNT-polymer facilitates the immobilization of bioactive molecules such as DNA, enzymes or antibodies, which in turn enables the construction of state-of-the-art, future-oriented biosensors.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, an automatic design method is proposed for unit cell in spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP) with an almost arbitrary dispersion curve. In this method, the pixel configuration is considered for the unit cell and, by using the binary particle swarm optimization method, the proper topology of the unit cell is explored so as to reach the target dispersion curve. Unlike the traditional method of controlling the dispersion curve, which is performed based on changing the geometric parameters of the predetermined unit cell, in this method, there is no need to know the shape of the unit cell, and the dispersion curve of the modes of SSPP unit cell can be controlled independently with more freedom. Two unit cell samples are designed in order to show the efficiency of the procedure. In the first sample, the dispersion curve is designed to have the lowest asymptotic frequency; in the second sample, the dispersion curve of the second mode is controlled independently from the first mode and is changed arbitrarily. SSPP transmission lines which are related to the unit cells of the two samples are designed, and it is demonstrated that measurement and simulation results are greatly in line with each other.

ABSTRACT

Multi-layer film structures of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and fish gelatin (FG), prepared using the solvent casting technique, were studied in an effort to produce bio-based films with low oxygen (OP) and water vapor permeability (WVP). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of triple-layer film showed that the outer PLA layers are being closely attached to the inner FG layer to make continuous film. The OP of multi-layer film (5.02cm3/m2daybar) decreased more than 8-fold compared with that of the PLA film, and the WVP of multi-layer film (0.125gmm/kPah m2) also decreased 11-fold compared with that of the FG film. Lamination with PLA profoundly increased the water resistance of the bare gelatin film. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of the triple-layer film (25±2.13MPa) was greater than that of FG film (7.48±1.70MPa). At the same time, the resulting film maintains high optical clarity. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis also revealed that the materials were compatible showing only one Tg which decreased with FG deposition. This material exhibits an environmental-friendliness potential and a high versatility in food packaging.
