ABSTRACT

Materials were obtained from commercial zirconium powders. 1 mass%, 2.5 mass% and 16 mass% of niobium powders were used as the reinforcing phase. The SPS method and the extrusion method classified as the SPD method were used. Relative density materials of up to 98% were obtained. The microstructure of the sintered Zr-xNb materials differs from that of the extruded materials. Due to the flammability of zirconium powders, no mechanical alloying was used; only mixing of zirconium and niobium powders in water and isopropyl alcohol. Niobium was grouped in clusters with an average niobium particle size of about 10 µm up to 20 µm. According to the Zr-Nb phase equilibrium system, the stable phase at RT was the hexagonal α-phase. The tests were carried out for materials without the additional annealing process. The effect of niobium as a ß-Zr phase stabilizer is confirmed by XRD. Materials differed in their phase composition, and for both methods the ß-Zr phase was present in obtained materials. A very favorable effect of niobium on the increase in corrosion resistance was observed, compared to the material obtained from the powder without the addition of niobium.

ABSTRACT

Zr-2.5Cu and Zr-10Cu powder mixtures were consolidated in the extrusion process and using the spark plasma sintering technique. In these studies, material tests were carried out in the fields of phase composition, microstructure, hardness and tensile strength for Zr-Cu materials at room temperature (RT) and 400 °C. Fractography analysis of materials at room temperature and 400 °C was carried out. The research took into account the anisotropy of the materials obtained in the extrusion process. For the nonequilibrium SPS process, ZrCu2 and Cu10Zr7 intermetallic compounds formed in the material at sintering temperature. Extruded materials were composed mainly of α-Zr and ZrCu2. The presence of intermetallic compounds affected the reduction in the strength properties of the tested materials. The highest strength value of 205 MPa was obtained for the extruded Zr-2.5Cu, for which the samples were cut in the direction of extrusion. For materials with 10 wt.% copper, more participation of the intermetallic phase was formed, which lowered the mechanical properties of the obtained materials. In addition to brittle intermetallic phases, the materials were characterized by residual porosity, which also reduced the strength properties.

ABSTRACT

The Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) list has been defined based on economic importance and supply risk by the European Commission. This review paper describes two issues regarding critical raw materials: the possibilities of their substitution in iron-based alloys and the use of iron-based alloys instead of other materials in order to save CRMs. This review covers strategies for saving chromium in stainless steel, substitution or lowering the amounts of carbide-forming elements (especially tungsten and vanadium) in tool steel and alternative iron-based CRM-free and low-CRM materials: austempered ductile cast iron, high-temperature alloys based on intermetallics of iron and sintered diamond tools with an iron-containing low-cobalt binder.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the effect of silicon on the manufacturing process, structure, phase composition, and selected properties of titanium aluminide alloys. The experimental generation of TiAl-Si alloys is composed of titanium aluminide (TiAl, Ti3Al or TiAl3) matrix reinforced by hard and heat-resistant titanium silicides (especially Ti5Si3). The alloys are characterized by wear resistance comparable with tool steels, high hardness, and very good resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (up to 1000 °C), but also low room-temperature ductility, as is typical also for other intermetallic materials. These alloys had been successfully prepared by the means of powder metallurgical routes and melting metallurgy methods.

ABSTRACT

The term "critical raw materials" (CRMs) refers to various metals and nonmetals that are crucial to Europe's economic progress. Modern technologies enabling effective use and recyclability of CRMs are in critical demand for the EU industries. The use of CRMs, especially in the fields of biomedicine, aerospace, electric vehicles, and energy applications, is almost irreplaceable. Additive manufacturing (also referred to as 3D printing) is one of the key enabling technologies in the field of manufacturing which underpins the Fourth Industrial Revolution. 3D printing not only suppresses waste but also provides an efficient buy-to-fly ratio and possesses the potential to entirely change supply and distribution chains, significantly reducing costs and revolutionizing all logistics. This review provides comprehensive new insights into CRM-containing materials processed by modern additive manufacturing techniques and outlines the potential for increasing the efficiency of CRMs utilization and reducing the dependence on CRMs through wider industrial incorporation of AM and specifics of powder bed AM methods making them prime candidates for such developments.

ABSTRACT

As part of the tests, a two-phase NiAl/Ni3Al alloy and a composite based on this alloy with 4 vol% addition of TiB2 were produced by the reactive FAST/SPS (Field Assisted Sintering Technology/Spark Plasma Sintering) sintering method. The sintering process was carried out at 1273 K for 30 s under an argon atmosphere. The effect of reactive SPS on the density, microstructure, and mechanical and tribological properties of a dual-phase Ni-Al intermetallic compound and Ni-Al-TiB2 composite was investigated. Products obtained were characterized by a high degree of sintering (over 99% of the theoretical density). The microstructure of sinters was characterized by a large diversity, mainly in regard to the structure of the dual-phase alloy (matrix). Compression tests showed satisfactory plastic properties of the manufactured materials, especially at high temperature (1073 K). For both materials at room temperature, the compressive strength was over 3 GPa. The stress-strain curves were observed to assume a different course for the matrix material and composite material, including differences in the maximum plastic flow stress depending on the test temperature. The brittle-to-ductile transition temperature was determined to be above 873 K. The research has revealed differences in the physical, mechanical and tribological properties of the produced sinters. However, the differences favourable for the composite were mostly the result of the addition of TiB2 ceramic particles uniformly distributed on grain boundaries.

ABSTRACT

In this study, four composites with different ZrB2 content were made by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS/FAST) technique. The sintering process was carried out at 1373 K for 5 min under an argon atmosphere. The effect of ZrB2 reinforcing phase content on the density, microstructure, and mechanical and tribological properties of composites was investigated. The results were compared with experimental data obtained for 316L austenitic stainless steel without the reinforcing phase. The results showed that the ZrB2 content significantly affected the tested properties. With the increasing content of the ZrB2 reinforcing phase, there was an increase in the Young's modulus and hardness and an improvement in the abrasive wear resistance of sintered composites. In all composites, new fine precipitates were formed and distributed in the steel matrix and along the grain boundaries. Microstructural analysis (Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS)) has revealed that the fine precipitates chromium contained chromium as well as boron.

ABSTRACT

A variety of cutting tool materials are used for the contact mode mechanical machining of components under extreme conditions of stress, temperature and/or corrosion, including operations such as drilling, milling turning and so on. These demanding conditions impose a seriously high strain rate (an order of magnitude higher than forming), and this limits the useful life of cutting tools, especially single-point cutting tools. Tungsten carbide is the most popularly used cutting tool material, and unfortunately its main ingredients of W and Co are at high risk in terms of material supply and are listed among critical raw materials (CRMs) for EU, for which sustainable use should be addressed. This paper highlights the evolution and the trend of use of CRMs) in cutting tools for mechanical machining through a timely review. The focus of this review and its motivation was driven by the four following themes: (i) the discussion of newly emerging hybrid machining processes offering performance enhancements and longevity in terms of tool life (laser and cryogenic incorporation); (ii) the development and synthesis of new CRM substitutes to minimise the use of tungsten; (iii) the improvement of the recycling of worn tools; and (iv) the accelerated use of modelling and simulation to design long-lasting tools in the Industry-4.0 framework, circular economy and cyber secure manufacturing. It may be noted that the scope of this paper is not to represent a completely exhaustive document concerning cutting tools for mechanical processing, but to raise awareness and pave the way for innovative thinking on the use of critical materials in mechanical processing tools with the aim of developing smart, timely control strategies and mitigation measures to suppress the use of CRMs.

ABSTRACT

High-purity Zr has been observed to undergo a phase transformation from the α-phase to the hexagonal ω-phase under high pressure generated either statically or by shock loading. The transition pressure from α-Zr to ω-Zr at 300 K is 2.10 GPa. The main aim of this research was to determine the conditions of α-Zr in ω-Zr transformation and the state of stresses after the high-pressure pressing and sintering of zirconium powders. Commercially acquired zirconium powders of 99.9% and 98.8% purity were used in this study. Qualitative and quantitative phase analysis of the materials was carried out using X-ray diffraction. The materials were statically pressed and sintered using a Bridgman-type toroidal apparatus at under 4.0 and 7.8 GPa. After pressing, the transformation proceeded for the zirconium powder containing 98.8% purity (with hydrides admixture) but did not occur for the high-purity zirconium powders with 99.9% purity. The zirconium powders were sintered using the HPHT (High Pressure-High Temperature) method at temperatures of 1273 K and 1473 K. The transformation proceeded for both powders. The highest contribution of the ω-Zr phase was obtained in the zirconium (98.8% purity with the hydrides contents) sintered for 1 min at a temperature of 1473 K and a pressure of 7.8. The ω-phase content was 87 wt.%. The stress measurement was performed for the pressed and sintered materials using the sin2ψ X-ray diffraction method. The higher sintering temperature resulted in a decrease of the residual stresses in the ω-Zr phase for the sintered zirconium. The higher levels of stress limited the transformation of the α-Zr phase into the ω-Zr phase. Investigated materials characterized by higher compressive macrostresses were also typical of the greater stability of the ω-Zr phase at high temperatures.

ABSTRACT

Ti-Al-Si alloys are prospective material for high-temperature applications. Due to low density, good mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance, these intermetallic alloys can be used in the aerospace and automobile industries. Ti-Al-Si alloys were prepared by powder metallurgy using reactive sintering, milling, and spark plasma sintering. One of the novel SPS techniques is high-pressure spark plasma sintering (HP SPS), which was tested in this work and applied to a Ti-10Al-20Si intermetallic alloy using a pressure of 6 GPa and temperatures ranging from 1318 K (1045 °C) to 1597 K (1324 °C). The low-porosity consolidated samples consist of Ti5Si3 silicides in an aluminide (TiAl) matrix. The hardness varied between 720 and 892 HV 5.
