ABSTRACT

Differences in moisture and protein content impact both nutritional value and processing efficiency of corn kernels. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy can be used to estimate kernel composition, but models trained on a few environments may underestimate error rates and bias. We assembled corn samples from diverse international environments and used NIR with chemometrics and partial least squares regression (PLSR) to determine moisture and protein. The potential of five feature selection methods to improve prediction accuracy was assessed by extracting sensitive wavelengths. Gradient boosting machines (GBMs), particularly CatBoost and LightGBM, were found to effectively select crucial wavelengths for moisture (1409, 1900, 1908, 1932, 1953, 2174 nm) and protein (887, 1212, 1705, 1891, 2097, 2456 nm). SHAP plots highlighted significant wavelength contributions to model prediction. These results illustrate GBMs' effectiveness in feature engineering for agricultural and food sector applications, including developing multi-country global calibration models for moisture and protein in corn kernels.

ABSTRACT

To understand the flavor and metabolite differences between the three commercial dried jujube cultivars Huizao (HZ), Hamazao 1 (HMZ), and Qiyuexian (QYX), their soluble sugars, organic acids, volatiles, and metabolites were systematically investigated. The results show that sucrose and malic acid were the main soluble sugar and organic acids contained in these dried jujubes, respectively. Sucrose (573.89 mg/g DW) had the highest presence in HZ, and the total sugar content (898.33 mg/g DW) was the highest in QYX. Both of these had a low total acid content, resulting in relatively high sugar-acid ratios (105.49 and 127.86, respectively) compared to that of HMZ (51.50). Additionally, 66 volatile components were detected in the 3 jujubes. These mainly included acids, aldehydes, esters, and ketones (90.5-96.49%). Among them, (E)-2-nonenal, (E)-2-decenal, heptanal, decanal, nonanal, and octanal were identified as the key aromatic substances of the dried jujubes, and their contents were the highest in HMZ. Moreover, 454 metabolites were identified, including alkaloids, amino acids, flavonoids, lipids, nucleotides, and terpenoids. The highest contents of flavonoids (5.6%) and lipids (24.9%) were detected in HMZ, the highest contents of nucleotides (10.2%) and alkaloids (27%) were found in QYX, and the contents of saccharides (5.7%) and amino acids (23.6%) were high in HZ. Overall, HZ, HMZ, and QYX significantly differ in their flavor and nutrition. HZ tastes better, HMZ is more fragrant, and QYX and HMZ possess higher nutritional values.

ABSTRACT

Bioenergy crops have potential for being a sustainable and renewable feedstock for biofuels and various value-added bioproducts. The study utilizes recently developed transgenic sugarcane ('oilcane') bagasse for chemical-free coproduction of high-value bioproducts, i.e., furfurals, HMF, acetic acid, cellulosic sugars, and vegetative lipids. Hydrothermal pretreatment was optimized at 210 °C for 5 min to coproduce 6.91%, 2.67%, 5.07%, 2.42% and 37.82% (w/w) furfurals, HMF, acetic acid, vegetative lipids, and cellulosic sugars, respectively from lignocellulosic biomass. Additionally, nanofiltration system in-series was successfully established to recover sugars, furfurals, HMF, and acetic acid from the pretreatment liquor. 1st nanofiltration with Duracid NF membrane rejected ∼99% sugars. Concentrated sugars with significantly reduced inhibitory products were obtained in retentate for fermentation. 2nd nanofiltration with NF90 membrane used permeate of 1st nanofiltration as feed and rejected âˆ¼ 86% furfurals. The work demonstrates the feasibility of coproducing and recovering multiple biochemicals from lignocellulosic biomass.

ABSTRACT

Methylene blue (MB) removal from dyeing wastewater using low-cost bio-derived adsorbent is a significant and challenging field. Herein, magnetic sugar hydrochar (MGHC) precursors derived from sugar-rich wastewater with small particle size and rich oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs) are prepared from sugar-rich aqueous solution via Fe salt-modified hydrothermal procedure. The role of Fe3O4 nanoparticles formed during the sugar carbonization is to provide numerous magnetic seeds to generate MGHC with core-shell structure, which reduces the particle size of hydrochar. This increases the amount of OCFGs on the surface of MGHC for bonding the sulfonic acid groups. Therefore, sulfonic acid-modified MGHC-SA shows the rapid MB adsorption rate and excellent adsorption capacity. The highest MB capacity is 869.6 mg/g at pH = 11.0 and 298 K. Additionally, the MGHC-SA can be easily recovery by magnet. And the stability of MGHC-SA was also evaluated, no degradation of adsorption performance was observed, even the adsorbent was regenerated 10 times. This study puts forward a promising way to acquire functional groups rich and easy recovery hydrochar from sugar wastewater for MB removal.

ABSTRACT

Chinese jujube is a widely cultivated fruit of the Rhamnaceae family. However, there are few reports on the comprehensive evaluation of jujube fruit quality in the main jujube producing areas. Liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis, and ranking score were used to comprehensively evaluate the metabolic traits and quality of 20 dried jujube varieties in the seven main producing areas in China. A total of 29 categories of 463 metabolites were identified and detected; among them, alkaloids, amino acids, flavonoids, and lipids are the main nutrients in dried jujube fruits. An analysis of the content of metabolites in dried jujube fruits from seven producing areas showed that the difference in the fruit quality traits between the producing areas is significant, exhibiting the regional characteristics of the eastern and western regions in North China. In addition, jujube varieties HN-L-L (72 points), XJ-H-Hm (59 points), and XJ-H-Hp (59 points) with the highest scores are rich in nutrients and can be used as raw materials in the development of functional foods.

ABSTRACT

Two bacterial strains, designated SS33T and Y03T, were isolated from marine sediment and marine red alga collected on the coast of Weihai, PR China. Based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain SS33T was found to be closely related to Primorskyibacter marinus PX7T, Pelagivirga dicentrarchi YLY04T, Palleronia marisminoris DSM 26347T and Maribius pontilimi GH1-23T with 94.8, 94.6, 94.5 and 94.5 % sequence similarity; strain Y03T was found to be closest to Flavivirga aquimarina EC2D5T, Flavivirga eckloniae ECD14T and Flavivirga amylovorans JC2681T with 96.4, 96.1 and 96.0 % sequence similarity. Strain SS33T grew at 4-37 °C (optimum, 33 °C), at pH 6.0-9.5 (optimum, pH 7.5-8.0) and in the presence of 0-10 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3.0 %). Chemotaxonomic analysis of strain SS33T showed that the predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10. The major fatty acids (>10.0 %) included C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0. The major polar lipids included phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, one unidentified phospholipid, one unidentified glycolipid, one unidentified polar lipid and two unidentified aminolipids. Strain Y03T grew at 15-40 °C (optimum, 28 °C), at pH 6.5-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0.5-9.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2.0%). Chemotaxonomic analysis showed that the predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The major fatty acids (>10.0 %) included iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified phospholipid, one unidentified aminolipid and four unidentified polar lipids. Based on the polyphasic data, strain SS33T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Palleronia, for which the name Palleronia sediminis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain SS33T (=KCTC 62986T=MCCC 1H00387T). Strain Y03T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Flavivirga, for which the name Flavivirga algicola sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain Y03T (=KCTC 72001T=MCCC 1H00386T).
