ABSTRACT

Objective: To develop and evaluate the simplified Chinese versions of motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire (MSSQ)-long (MSSQ-L) and MSSQ-short (MSSQ-S). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2023 among 3 426 university students at North China University of Science and Technology. The Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S were distributed, and item selection for Simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S was performed based on item response rates, item-total correlations, Cronbach's alpha coefficients, and standard deviations. Forty-five male and forty-five female participants were recruited from the initial survey population to complete Coriolis acceleration endurance testing and fill out the simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S, and Graybiel symptom severity score questionnaire. Internal consistency, external consistency, criterion validity, discriminant validity, and predictive accuracy for motion sickness severity were assessed. Results: A total of 3 111 valid responses were received for the Chinese versions of MSSQ, yielding an effective response rate of 90.8% (3 111/3 426). Among the 3 111 students surveyed, there were 965 males and 2 146 females, with a mean age of (19.5±1.4) years. The highest usage rates for item were observed for cars (98.9%, 3 077/3 111) and buses (98.8%, 3 073/3 111). The simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S consisted of four and eight items, respectively. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.900 and 0.953 for the simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-S and MSSQ-L, respectively, with test-retest reliabilities of 0.895 and 0.908. Criterion validity coefficients were 0.814 and 0.765 for the simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-S and MSSQ-L, respectively. In terms of discriminant validity, significant differences were observed between mild and moderate susceptibility groups [0(0, 3) vs 6(2, 10), P=0.006] and between moderate and severe susceptibility groups [6(2, 10) vs 9(6, 13), P=0.030] for the simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-S. Significant differences were also observed between mild and moderate susceptibility groups [5(0, 3) vs 7(3, 10), P=0.001], but not between moderate and severe susceptibility groups [7(3, 10) vs 7(3, 10), P=0.081] for simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-L. The overall predictive accuracy for motion sickness severity improved from 55.6% (50/90) to 62.2% (56/90) for the simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-S and from 54.4% (49/90) to 58.9% (53/90) for the simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-L, but with no statistically significant differences (both P>0.05). Conclusions: The simplified Chinese versions of MSSQ-L and MSSQ-S demonstrates good reliability and validity. The simplified Chinese version of MSSQ-S exhibits satisfactory discriminant validity, and can serve as a simple and efficient tool for assessing motion sickness susceptibility.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the association between exposure patterns of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and anxiety symptom trajectories in medical college students. Methods: A survey was conducted on first-year students from Anhui Medical College and Anqing Medical College, using the Childhood Abuse Questionnaire, Family Disability Questionnaire, Childhood Adverse Social Experience Item, and Anxiety Self Rating Scale. The baseline survey was conducted from November to December 2019, and two follow-up visits were conducted once every six months until November to December 2020. The latent class analysis (LCA) was used to analyze the exposure patterns of ACEs. The latent class growth analysis (LCGA) was used to analyze the development trajectory of anxiety symptoms. The multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the correlation between different exposure patterns of ACEs and the trajectory of anxiety symptom trajectories. Results: A total of 3 662 college students aged (19.2±1.0) were surveyed. The LCA showed that the exposure patterns of ACEs could be divided into the "high ACEs" group (13.4%), "high neglect/emotional abuse" group (25.7%), "high family dysfunction" group (6.9%), "high neglect" group (27.1%), and "low ACEs" group (26.3%). The LCGA divided anxiety trajectories into four groups: "high anxiety decline" (7.1%),"anxiety increase "(4.1%), "moderate anxiety"(52.9%), and "low anxiety"(35.9%). Using the low ACEs group as a reference group, compared with the low anxiety trajectory, the high ACEs group, high neglect/emotional abuse group, high family dysfunction group, high neglect group, and medium to high-level anxiety trajectory were all associated with an increased risk (P<0.05). Conclusion: There is heterogeneity in ACEs exposure patterns among medical college students, and ACEs exposure patterns are important influencing factors for anxiety symptom trajectories.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide statistical data support for the development of thyroid phenotype-related follow-up and reference for follow-up duration and project selection by analyzing the clinical characteristics of thyroid phenotype in Pendred syndrome (PDS) based on multiple databases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PDS-related pathogenic or possibly/pathogenic mutations were searched by Deafness Variation Database (DVD), ClinVar, and PubMed databases, the mutation sites were counted and the characteristics and thyroid phenotypes were analyzed. RESULTS: The median age of hearing phenotype onset in PDS cases reported in multiple databases was 1.0 (1.0, 2.0) years, the median age of thyroid phenotype onset was 14.5 (5.8, 21.0) years, and the median age that thyroid phenotype was more delayed than hearing phenotype was 10.0 (4.0, 17.0) years. There were significant differences in the distribution of onset time between the two phenotypes (Z=-4.560, p<0.01). In these patients, the positive rates of goiter, thyroid nodules, abnormal thyroid function, and perchlorate discharge test (PDT) were 78%, 78%, 69%, and 78%, respectively. Moreover, the number of thyroid phenotype-positive items in the genotype group with frameshift mutation was not significantly higher than that in the group without frameshift mutation (Z=-1.452, p=0.147). CONCLUSIONS: The early missed diagnosis of PDS may be due to the late onset of thyroid phenotype and the non-100% positive rate of examination items. Therefore, multi-item follow-up of the thyroid gland into adulthood will benefit patients. At present, the relationship between genotype and phenotype is still unclear, and prognosis cannot be determined according to genotype.

ABSTRACT

Microencapsulated phase change composites, one of the high-efficiency thermal protection media, are widely used in the thermal protection of supersonic aircraft. The phase transition occurring during the cruise of supersonic aircraft leads to a change in the mechanical properties of microencapsulated phase change composites (MPCMs). In this study, we experimentally studied the variations of the mechanical properties of MPCMs during cruise. The effects of the volume fraction ratio of core to shell on the thermal storage and mechanical properties of the microencapsulated phase change composites are investigated. Results show that the latent heat capacity increases with an increase in the volume fraction ratio of core to shell. The deformation mode translates from a brittle fracture into a brittle deformation status during the phase transition. The mechanical properties of the MPCMs decrease at three conditions without phase transition, during phase transition and complete phase transition, respectively, with an increase in the ratio of core to shell as well as increased temperature. The above-mentioned findings can guide the design of a best thermal management system for supersonic aircraft.

ABSTRACT

The clinical values of video head impulse test (vHIT), caloric test (CT) and sensory organization test (SOT) at different stages before and after rehabilitation of 30 patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) in Vertigo Center Ward of Air Force Special Medical Center from January 2019 to January 2020 were analyzed and compared. There were 19 males (63.3%) and 11 females (36.7%), respectively, aged 18-68 (44±14) years. After 1 week and 3 months of rehabilitation in VN patients, the results of the three examinations were detached, and the recovery rates among the three observed indicators of each examination were statistically different (P<0.001). After 1 week of rehabilitation, the total recovery rate of vHIT was 0, which was lower than that of CT (40.0%) and SOT (43.3%) (both P<0.001). After 3 months of rehabilitation, the total recovery rate of vHIT was 13.3%, which was also lower than CT (86.7%) and SOT (80.0%) (both P<0.001). The current study indicates that the results of observed indicators from vHIT, CT and SOT were detached at different stages of VN rehabilitation. Therefore, the clinical significance of different vestibular function examinations is different but complementary.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To reconstruct a 3D model from adult femur CT scan data and automate a measurement of femoral anatomical parameters to study the characteristics of Chinese femur anatomical parameters. Methods: Using Mimics17.0, models from the CT data of 148 adult patients were established. The completed model was imported into Geomagic Studio and the anatomical landmarks of the femur were extracted to establish 3D coordinate system and unified coordinate system. Programmed with Matlab, using the nearest point iterative ICP algorithm and the 3D automatic extraction algorithm of anatomical landmarks to provide precision positioning, the femoral anatomical parameters were automatically measured and analyzed. The data were compared by using independent sample t test. Results: In this group, the diameter of the male femoral condyle was (84.1±3.6) mm, and it was (74.8±3.3) mm in the female; the anteroposterior diameter of the male femoral condyle was (66.5±3.7) mm, and it was (61.2±3.5) mm in the female; the diameter of the male ball head was (48.8±2.1) mm and it was (43.4±2.2) mm in the female; the differences between the two genders were all statistically significant (t=16.21, 8.84, 15.20, all P<0.05). The male femoral moment radius was (112.5±24.5) mm, and it was (124.7±19.2) mm in the female (t=3.30, P=0.002). The neck angle in male participants was 124.9°±4.0°, and it was 126.1°±5.5° in the female (t=1.40, P>0.05). As the height growed, most of the anatomical parameters increased accordingly. Conclusions: The 3D automatic measurement of femoral anatomical parameters is more reproducible and accurate than manual measurement. It is necessary to establish and enrich the femoral anatomical database to design and develop internal fixation products that meet the needs of Chinese people.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the application value of the weight-bearing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in evaluating the stability of knee joint after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Methods: From July 2011 to August 2013, a total of 25 patients with anterior cruciate ligament rupture and reconstruction surgery in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University were enrolled in this study, including 18 males and 7 females, with an average age of (32±5) years. All the patients underwent the weight-bearing MRI, knee joint passive relaxation test (Kneelax 3), and Lysholm score before the surgery and 3 and 6 months after the surgery. The three examinations before and after the operation were analyzed by repeated measures of general linear model, and paired t test was used to compare the results before and after the operation. The correlation between the three preoperative examinations was statistically analyzed. Results: The relaxation data measured by Kneelax 3 after the surgery was significantly lower than that before the operation [(1.1±0.9) mm vs (6.1±1.3) mm, t=16.9, P<0.01]. The post-operative lateral tibial plateau anterior shift score was less than the pre-operative score [(3.0±0.7) mm vs (4.8±1.2) mm, t=6.2, P<0.01]. The post-operative Lysholm score was significantly higher than that before the operation (89±6 vs 64±14, t=-8.3, P<0.05). There was a negative correlation between the anterior displacement of the lateral platform and Lysholm score (r=-0.902, P<0.01). There was no correlation between anterior displacement and passive relaxation of the lateral platform in preoperative weight-bearing MRI. Conclusions: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction can improve the knee stability. The stability of knee joint can be evaluated by weight-bearing MRI. The anterior tibial displacement measured by the weight-bearing MRI is correlated with the clinical score.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the clinical features of secondary benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and provide evidence for its precise diagnosis and treatment. Method:There were 942 patients with vertigo related to BPPV, including 204 patients with primary BPPV, 592 patients with vestibular migraine (VM), 83 patients with Meniere's disease (MD), 48 patients with vestibular neuronitis (VN), and 15 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) accompanied by vertigo. There were 127 patients with BPPV secondary to vertigo in MD, VN, VM, and SSNHL. All patients received otolith repositioning treatment by hand or instrument based on detailed medical history. Secondary BPPV patients are treated according to the principle of diagnosis and treatment of primary BPPV. The incidence of secondary BPPV in each related disease was counted, and the difference between primary and secondary BPPV in gender, age, affected semicircular canal, number of reductions, and vertigo control rate was compared. Result:①The incidence of MD, VN, sudden vertigo, and VM secondary BPPV were 36.1% (30/83), 35.4%(17/48), 33.3% (5/15), and 12.7% (75/592). ②In patients with BPPV secondary to MD, the proportion of multi-semicircular canals involved was higher than that of primary BPPV, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05), and there was no significant difference in the distribution of semicircular canals involved among the remaining diseases. ③The vertigo control rate of BPPV secondary to MD and VM was lower than that of primary BPPV, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). ④The repositioning time of BPPV secondary to VM (2.88±2.32) and MD (2.53±1.14) was higher than that of primary BPPV (2.37±1.77). The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the repositioning time between other secondary BPPV and primary BPPV. Conclusion:Common causes of secondary BPPV include MD, VN, SSNHL, and VM. Same as primary BPPV, the secondary BPPV was more common in women and the posterior semicircular canal was most affected. BPPV secondary to MD is more susceptible to multi-semicircular canals involvement than primary BPPV. Detailed medical history combined with targeted examination is conducive to the accurate diagnosis of BPPV. Secondary BPPV can also be treated by manipulation or instrument, however, the effect is worse than primary BPPV. Secondary BPPV should be treated according to the treatment principle of primary disease besides otolith repositioning.

ABSTRACT

Starting from rational bases for a genetic approach to Ménière's disease (MD), we explored the numerous reports published in literature and summarized the recent advances in understanding of the genetic fundaments of the disease. The research advances related to the genetic fundaments of MD were reviewed. The incidence of MD presents as familial clustering and hasdifference in geographical and racial, no certain gene associated with MD was found. At present, studies concentrate on those genes, such as human leukocyte antigen (HLA), DFNA9, chromosome 12, macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF), KCNE, and heat shock protein (HSP). However, there have much arguments in diagnose, classify and pathophysiology of MD, resulting in different conclusion and prospect. The characteristics of MD strongly suggest a certain role for genetic factors in the development of MD, no convincing evidence for an association with any gene exists. To make a more strict quality control and continue explore the genetic factors of MD, will be meaningful in the future.

ABSTRACT

A vital step in the development of heart failure is the transition from compensatory cardiac hypertrophy to decompensated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) during cardiac remodeling under mechanical or pathological stress. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of DCM and heart failure remain incompletely understood. In the present study, we investigate whether Gab1, a scaffolding adaptor protein, protects against hemodynamic stress-induced DCM and heat failure. We first observed that the protein levels of Gab1 were markedly reduced in hearts from human patients with DCM and from mice with experimental viral myocarditis in which DCM developed. Next, we generated cardiac-specific Gab1 knockout mice (Gab1-cKO) and found that Gab-cKO mice developed DCM in hemodynamic stress-dependent and age-dependent manners. Under transverse aorta constriction (TAC), Gab1-cKO mice rapidly developed decompensated DCM and heart failure, whereas Gab1 wild-type littermates exhibited adaptive left ventricular hypertrophy without changes in cardiac function. Mechanistically, we showed that Gab1-cKO mouse hearts displayed severe mitochondrial damages and increased cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Loss of cardiac Gab1 in mice impaired Gab1 downstream MAPK signaling pathways in the heart under TAC. Gene profiles further revealed that ablation of Gab1 in heart disrupts the balance of anti- and pro-apoptotic genes in cardiomyocytes. These results demonstrate that cardiomyocyte Gab1 is a critical regulator of the compensatory cardiac response to aging and hemodynamic stress. These findings may provide new mechanistic insights and potential therapeutic target for DCM and heart failure.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To compare the therapeutic efficacy and the recurrence rate between the simple repositioning method and the reposition manoeuvre plus medication in the treatment of horizontal semicircular canal otolith benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (HSC-BPPV). Method:Sixty-two patients diagnosed with otolith HSC-BPPV by roll maneuver test were randomly divided into canalith repositioning group (32 patients) and reposition plus drug treatment group (30 patients). Patients in the canalith repositioning group were treated only with Barbecue reposition maneuver; patients in the reposition plus drug treatment group were treated firstly with Barbecue reposition maneuver and then were given Alprostadil, Cinepazide and Betahistine drug treatment. Both groups were evaluated after 7 days and 28 days treatment, and the recurrence rate was analyzed after 3 months. Result:After 7 days of the treatment , the recovery rate of the two groups was 62.5% and 73.3%, respectively. There's no significant difference between the two groups. However, the total effective power of the reposition plus drug treatment group was 96.7%, which was significantly higher than that of the canalith repositioning group (75.0%) (χ²=5.858, P<0.05). There were 8 patients in the canalith repositioning group showed changes of BBPV types after treatment, while only 1 patient in the reposition plus drug treatment group showed lesion changes. The difference was statistically significant (χ²=4.061, P<0.05). After 28 days of the treatment, the recovery rate and the total effective power of the two groups was 100%, respectively. There is no statistical difference in the total effective rate between the two groups. After 3 months follow-up, 2 patients in the canalith repositioning group (6.25%) and in the reposition plus drug treatment group (6.67%) showed BBPV recurrence, and no significant difference in the recurrence rate was found between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion:The repositioning maneuver is the preferred method for treating HSC BPPV. Canalith reposition maneuver plus medication has no obvious effect on the recovery rate and the recurrence rate, it only increases the effective rate and reduces the changes of the BBPV types.

ABSTRACT

Oxidative stress, a state of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, and restenosis. Recently we have identified several SOXFs (Secreted OXidative stress-induced Factors) from vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). Our studies have demonstrated that SOXF function as redox mediators to regulate growth of VSMC, inflammation and apoptosis of endothelial cells, and are involved in the processes of vascular lesion formation after vascular injury and in apolipoprotein E deficient (ApoE-/-) mice. Understanding the mechanisms by which ROS stimulate secretion of SOXF and the role of SOXF in vascular cells should provide important insight into the cellular response to oxidative stress and new therapeutic targets for vascular diseases.

ABSTRACT

Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and restenosis, in part by promoting vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) growth. Many VSMC growth factors are secreted by VSMC and act in an autocrine manner. Here we demonstrate that cyclophilin A (CyPA), a member of the immunophilin family, is secreted by VSMCs in response to oxidative stress and mediates extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) activation and VSMC growth by reactive oxygen species. Human recombinant CyPA can mimic the effects of secreted CyPA to stimulate ERK1/2 and cell growth. The peptidyl-prolyl isomerase activity is required for ERK1/2 activation by CyPA. In vivo, CyPA expression and secretion are increased by oxidative stress and vascular injury. These findings are the first to identify CyPA as a secreted redox-sensitive mediator, establish CyPA as a VSMC growth factor, and suggest an important role for CyPA and enzymes with peptidyl-prolyl isomerase activity in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases.

ABSTRACT

Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and hypertension, in part by promoting vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) growth. We have previously shown that LY83583, a generator of O-(2), activated extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK1/2) with early (10 min) and late (2 h) peaks and stimulated VSMC growth. To investigate whether secreted oxidative stress-induced factors (termed SOXF) from VSMC were responsible for late ERK1/2 activation in response to LY83583, we purified putative SOXF proteins from conditioned medium (2 h of LY83583 exposure) by sequential chromatography based on activation of ERK1/2. Proteins identified by capillary chromatography, electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry, and data base searching included heat shock protein 90-alpha (HSP90-alpha) and cyclophilin B. Western blot analysis of conditioned medium showed specific secretion of HSP90-alpha but not HSP90-beta. Immunodepletion of HSP90-alpha from conditioned medium significantly inhibited conditioned medium-induced ERK1/2 activation. Human recombinant HSP90-alpha reproduced the effect of conditioned medium on ERK1/2 activation. These results show that brief oxidative stress causes sustained release of protein factors from VSMC that can stimulate ERK1/2. These factors may be important mediators for the effects of reactive oxygen species on vascular function.

METHODS: 150 golden hamsters were randomly divided into model group (66 animals), HEr group (66) and control group (18). Carcinomatous conversions of golden hamster cheek pouches induced by Sally way and interrupted by Herba Erigerontis. Ink perfusion, analysis of images, resin cast form of micro vessel, alpha-SMA detection and histopathological examination were applied to observe their changing patterns. RESULTS: The rate of leukoplakia canceration of Herba Erigerontis group was 50% lower than that of model group. The rate of normal cells was about four times more than that of model. alpha-SMA of Herba Erigerontis 65.76 was higher than that of model (P<0.001). There was no significant difference between angeion vessel area and density (P>0.05). Nevertheless, the resin cast form of micro-vessel showed that its configuration and spacious arrangement was similar to control group. CONCLUSION: Herba Erigerontis has the function of preventing leukoplakia canceration absolutely. Maybe its mechanism is to upregulate the expression of alpha-SMA. It has no obvious effect of angio-hyperplasia and expansion in the course of leukoplakia canceration. However, it has the protecting function to angio-configuration and spacious arrangement and the integrity of angeion vessed wall. Probably its mechanism is promoting blood circulation by removing blood stasis and benign angiogenesis so as to resist canceration.

ABSTRACT

The past decade experienced a stunning change in the incidence and fatality rates of pesticide poisonings in China. A study on representative case records of pesticide poisoning in a chinese province is presented here. A three-fold increase in poisoning cases due to a lack of preventive measures was reported at the beginning of the 1980s, under the rural economic reformation. Occupational intoxication incidence was swiftly reduced within a couple of years, and further stepped down as the adequate means were taken. On the contrary, the increase in non-occupational cases declined very slowly. The fatality rate of occupational poisoning cases was kept low (around few per thousand), while the non-occupational remarkably declined from 30% to 11% thanks to the efforts of health and medical care centres. The number and fatality rate of non-occupational cases thus came to play a more and more important role. Such trend is worth our attention.

ABSTRACT

Studying premalignancy is an important field of conquering cancer. The aim to study the mechanics of oral mucosal premalignant formation and seek effective drug which could prevent and block cancer,Gynostemma Pentaphyllum(GP) was applies to block carcinomatous conversion of golden hamster cheek pouch by Salley's way.Using light microscopic observation and proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) as well as bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU)(PCNA AND BrdU are immunohistochemistry techniques),GPs effect was observed dynamically. We found that GP could delay the presence of leukoplakia and decrease the rate of presence as well as cancer-causing rate. The positive cells of taking drug group PCNA and BrdU were lower than model group significantly and in a lower condition all the time.It is illustrated that GP has the effect of preventing cancer and inhibiting cellular dysplasia.
