ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Despite variation in licensure requirements and models for pharmacy practice nationwide, there is little published data within the United States regarding pharmacist perspectives. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify the demographics, awareness, and perceptions about current pharmacist licensure models. METHODS: A fifteen-question mixed-methods survey was created and distributed via Qualtrics-XM Survey to all Utah licensed pharmacists (n = 4154). Data collection was August 22-September 22, 2022. Before survey distribution, pilot feedback was sought from the Utah Board of Pharmacy and pharmacists at the 118th National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) national conference. Exempt status was granted by Roseman University Institutional Review Board. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis allowed for descriptive statistics and thematic content identification. RESULTS: The survey collected 972 responses for a response rate of 23% and a completion rate of 94%. Respondents self-identified 36 practice areas. Distribution of years in practice was well dispersed between the predefined ranges. Primary state of licensure was Utah (80%), with additional representation from all 50 states and Guam. The survey showed a variation in awareness regarding other healthcare professional licensing models with 40.83% "aware," 40.62% "unaware," and 18.55% "unsure". A majority showed awareness of the NABP Verify program (55.8%), but unawareness of the Electronic Licensure Transfer Program program (56.14%). Respondents agreed with increased license portability for medically underserved and rural areas (71.79%) and preference for having a law exam (56.72%). Pharmacists (n = 405) noted concerns regarding multistate renewal requirements, fees, and continuing education. CONCLUSION: This study provided baseline data on a topic that is missing in existing literature. Results illustrated a high completion rate, a diversity of demographics including well dispersed age ranges, years in practice, and qualitative responses. The quantitative data shed light on a variety of pharmacist perspectives and varied awareness about NABP licensure programs and compacts.

ABSTRACT

Objective. To identify current preceptor orientation and development programs at US colleges and schools of pharmacy and propose future initiatives for preceptor programs. Methods. An anonymous 28-item survey was administered in January 2017 to 128 experiential education personnel at accredited US schools and colleges of pharmacy. Data from completed survey instruments were tabulated and qualitative responses to open-ended questions were examined using thematic analysis. Results. Eighty-five experiential education administrators participated in the survey (response rate=67%). Most preceptor orientation programs met the majority of requirements as outlined within the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education's Standard 20.3, although only 42% of programs mandated preceptor orientation prior to student placement. Two-thirds of respondents offered annual, live preceptor development, and 75% of programs used commercially available online products. Nearly 40% of respondents collaborated with other schools or professional organizations to offer preceptor training. Only 29% of programs had specific requirements for pharmacists to maintain their active preceptor status. Seventy percent of respondents reported spending over $2500 and 39% over $5000 annually on preceptor development. Programs with the highest monetary investment (>$10,000/year) in preceptor development offered multiple venues (live and online) for preceptor training. Programs with significant personnel commitment (≥0.5 FTE devoted to preceptor development) frequently had dedicated site visitors. Conclusion. Preceptor orientation programs at US schools of pharmacy are generally similar, but development programs vary significantly across the Academy. Highly invested programs featured live and online training or site visitors who provided individualized feedback or training. Future studies should explore the cost-effectiveness of program options and their impact on preceptor learning and behaviors.

ABSTRACT

Objective. To cross reference the core entrustable professional activities (EPAs) to a complete set of educational guidance documents for the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum to create a map for pharmacy educators.Methods. The Mapping EPAs Task Force consisted of nine members who first worked independently and then together in small working groups to map five assigned educational guidance documents (eg, Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education [CAPE] Outcomes, Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education [ACPE] Standards 1-4, and the Essential Elements for Core Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences [APPEs]) to the Core Entrustable Professional Activities for New Pharmacy Graduates. Four working groups completed the mapping process during phases 1 and 2, which was followed by an independent quality assurance review and consensus in phase 3.Results. All 15 core EPA statements were mapped to one or more of the educational documents. One item from the CAPE Outcomes could not be mapped to a core EPA statement. The first five EPA statements mapped directly to the five elements of the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process: collect, assess, plan, implement, and follow-up: monitor and evaluate.Conclusion. This comprehensive EPA map is the first curriculum crosswalk that encompasses a complete set of educational guidance documents including the Essential Elements for Core APPEs for the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. If adopted by the Academy, this curriculum crosswalk will provide pharmacy schools with a common interpretation of important educational guidance documents; serve as the foundation for curricular development, revision, and assessment; and ensure student pharmacists are prepared to enter the pharmacy profession.
