ABSTRACT

Although fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7) is known to promote wound healing, its mass production poses several challenges and very few studies have assessed the feasibility of producing FGF7 in cell lines such as Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Therefore, this study sought to produce recombinant FGF7 in large quantities and evaluate its wound healing effect. To this end, the FGF7 gene was transfected into CHO cells and FGF7 production was optimized. The wound healing efficacy of N-glycosylated FGF7 was evaluated in animals on days 7 and 14 post-treatment using collagen patches (CPs), FGF7-only, and CP with FGF7 (CP+FGF7), whereas an untreated group was used as the control. Wound healing was most effective in the CP+FGF7 group. Particularly, on day 7 post-exposure, the CP+FGF7 and FGF7-only groups exhibited the highest expression of hydroxyproline, fibroblast growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, and transforming growth factor. Epidermalization in H&E staining showed the same order of healing as hydroxyproline content. Additionally, the CP+FGF7 and FGF7-only group exhibited more notable blood vessel formation on days 7 and 14. In conclusion, the prepared FGF7 was effective in promoting wound healing and CHO cells can be a reliable platform for the mass production of FGF7.

ABSTRACT

Cervical cancer, the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, often proves fatal and stems from precursor lesions caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection. Accurate and early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. Current screening methods, such as the Pap test, liquid-based cytology (LBC), visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), and HPV DNA testing, have limitations, requiring confirmation through colposcopy. This study introduces CerviCARE AI, an artificial intelligence (AI) analysis software, to address colposcopy challenges. It automatically analyzes Tele-cervicography images, distinguishing between low-grade and high-grade lesions. In a multicenter retrospective study, CerviCARE AI achieved a remarkable sensitivity of 98% for high-risk groups (P2, P3, HSIL or higher, CIN2 or higher) and a specificity of 95.5%. These findings underscore CerviCARE AI's potential as a valuable diagnostic tool for highly accurate identification of cervical precancerous lesions. While further prospective research is needed to validate its clinical utility, this AI system holds promise for improving cervical cancer screening and lessening the burden of this deadly disease.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Previous observational studies have reported inconsistent findings on the association between consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks (SSSDs) and the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancer. This study investigated the associations between SSSD consumption and the risk of GI cancer using a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Observational epidemiological studies were searched from the PubMed and EMBASE databases until June 2021. We conducted a meta-analysis of all included studies and subgroup meta-analyses based on various factors. RESULTS: In a meta-analysis of 27 studies with nine case-control studies and 18 cohort studies, the consumption of SSSDs was modestly associated with an increased risk of GI cancer (odds ratio [OR]/relative risk [RR]: 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.16), with a significant positive dose-response relationship. In the subgroup meta-analysis by study design, there was a significant positive association between the consumption of SSSDs and GI cancer in cohort studies (RR: 1.11; 95% CI: 1.03-1.20; n = 18), but not in case-control studies. In the subgroup meta-analysis by type of cancer, consumption of SSSDs was significantly associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (OR/RR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.07-1.19). CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests that SSSD consumption significantly increases the risk of GI cancer, specifically colorectal cancer.

ABSTRACT

To enhance the production of recombinant human transforming growth factor-beta1 (rhTGF-ß1) in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, rhTGF-ß1 was first characterized for endocytosis, signaling pathway, and overall maturation process. The mature rhTGF-ß1 used for clinical application was internalized into CHO cells and inhibited the growth of CHO cells in a dose-dependent manner. However, mature rhTGF-ß1 was mostly produced in the form of latent rhTGF-ß1 in cultures of recombinant CHO (rCHO) cells producing rhTGF-ß1 (CHO-rhTGF-ß1). The concentration of active mature rhTGF-ß1 in the culture supernatant of CHO-rhTGF-ß1 cells was not high enough to compromise yield. In addition, a significant amount of unprocessed precursors was produced by CHO-rhTGF-ß1 cells. Overexpression of PACEsol, a soluble form of furin, in CHO-rhTGF-ß1 cells was effective for the proteolytic cleavage of unprocessed precursors. The highest mature rhTGF-ß1 concentration (6.4 µg mL-1 ) was obtained with the PACEsol-expressing clone, which was approximately 45% higher than that of the parental clone (P < 0.01). Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic properties of rhTGF-ß1 with respect to the overall maturation process, signaling pathway, and endocytosis is essential for effectively enhancing the production of mature rhTGF-ß1 in CHO cells.

ABSTRACT

The protein family of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs) is comprised of multifunctional nuclear enzymes. Several PARP inhibitors have been developed as new anticancer drugs to combat resistance to chemotherapy. Herein, we characterized PARP4 mRNA expression profiles in cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines. PARP4 mRNA expression was significantly upregulated in cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines, and this upregulation was associated with the hypomethylation of specific cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites (cg18582260 and cg17117459) on its promoter. Reduced PARP4 expression was restored by treating cisplatin-sensitive cell lines with a demethylation agent, implicating the epigenetic regulation of PARP4 expression by promoter methylation. Depletion of PARP4 expression in cisplatin-resistant cell lines reduced cisplatin chemoresistance and promoted cisplatin-induced DNA fragmentation. The differential mRNA expression and DNA methylation status at specific PARP4 promoter CpG sites (cg18582260 and cg17117459) according to cisplatin responses, was further validated in primary ovarian tumor tissues. The results showed significantly increased PARP4 mRNA expressions and decreased DNA methylation levels at specific PARP4 promoter CpG sites (cg18582260 and cg17117459) in cisplatin-resistant patients. Additionally, the DNA methylation status at cg18582260 CpG sites in ovarian tumor tissues showed fairly clear discrimination between cisplatin-resistant patients and cisplatin-sensitive patients, with high accuracy (area under the curve = 0.86, P = 0.003845). Our findings suggest that the DNA methylation status of PARP4 at the specific promoter site (cg18582260) may be a useful diagnostic biomarker for predicting the response to cisplatin in ovarian cancer patients. ABSTRACT

Cervical cancer is one of the main causes of death from cancer in women. However, it can be treated successfully at an early stage. This study aims to propose an image processing algorithm based on acetowhite, which is an important criterion for diagnosing cervical cancer, to increase the accuracy of the deep learning classification model. Then, we mainly compared the performance of the model, the original image without image processing, a mask image made with acetowhite as the region of interest, and an image using the proposed algorithm. In conclusion, the deep learning classification model based on images with the proposed algorithm achieved an accuracy of 81.31%, which is approximately 9% higher than the model with original images and approximately 4% higher than the model with acetowhite mask images. Our study suggests that the proposed algorithm based on acetowhite could have a better performance than other image processing algorithms for classifying stages of cervical images.

ABSTRACT

Since the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine guidelines were developed by the Korean Society of Gynecologic Oncology (KSGO) in 2011, 2016, and 2019, several recent studies on the efficacy and safety of HPV vaccines in middle-aged women and men have been reported. Furthermore, there has been an ongoing debate regarding the efficacy of the HPV vaccine in women with prior HPV infection or who have undergone conization for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). We searched and reviewed studies on the efficacy and safety of the HPV vaccine in middle-aged women and men and the efficacy of the HPV vaccine in patients infected with HPV and those who underwent conization for CIN. The KSGO updated their guidelines based on the results of the studies included in this review.

ABSTRACT

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide with a mortality rate of 60%. Cervical cancer begins with no overt signs and has a long latent period, making early detection through regular checkups vitally immportant. In this study, we compare the performance of two different models, machine learning and deep learning, for the purpose of identifying signs of cervical cancer using cervicography images. Using the deep learning model ResNet-50 and the machine learning models XGB, SVM, and RF, we classified 4119 Cervicography images as positive or negative for cervical cancer using square images in which the vaginal wall regions were removed. The machine learning models extracted 10 major features from a total of 300 features. All tests were validated by fivefold cross-validation and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis yielded the following AUCs: ResNet-50 0.97(CI 95% 0.949-0.976), XGB 0.82(CI 95% 0.797-0.851), SVM 0.84(CI 95% 0.801-0.854), RF 0.79(CI 95% 0.804-0.856). The ResNet-50 model showed a 0.15 point improvement (p < 0.05) over the average (0.82) of the three machine learning methods. Our data suggest that the ResNet-50 deep learning algorithm could offer greater performance than current machine learning models for the purpose of identifying cervical cancer using cervicography images.

ABSTRACT

The present study (KGOG 3030) aimed to evaluate the safety of modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) therapy with weekly administration of paclitaxel or cisplatin in female patients with recurrent or persistent epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal carcinoma. A total of 12 patients were randomized into the paclitaxel or cisplatin arm at a 1:1 ratio. Patients received weekly administration of paclitaxel (70 mg/m2) or cisplatin (40 mg/m2) intravenously on days 1, 8 and 15, and underwent mEHT therapy for 1 h on days 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 21 and 24 for each 4-week cycle. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of dose-limiting toxicity (DLT). The secondary endpoints were treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs), objective response rate, carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) response rate, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). In total, 16 patients were recruited, but four patients dropped out. None of the 12 remaining patients (6 each in the two arms) experienced DLT. Overall, 0 and 4 grade 3 TEAEs (anemia, nausea, neutrophil count decreased and platelet count decreased) occurred in the paclitaxel and cisplatin arm, respectively. Furthermore, one confirmed partial response and two CA125 responses were observed in the cisplatin arm. The median PFS time in the paclitaxel and cisplatin arms was 3.0 months (range, 1.7-4.6 months) and 6.8 months (range, 3.9-11.8 months), respectively, while the median OS time was 11.5 months (range, 8.4-28.8+ months) and not reached (range, 3.9-38.5+ months), respectively. In conclusion, mEHT therapy with weekly paclitaxel or cisplatin appeared safe and warrants further investigation. The present trial was registered with www.clinicaltrials.gov on January 22, 2015 (trial registration no. NCT02344095).

ABSTRACT

Cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG)-mediated endocytosis results in poor yields of recombinant human bone morphogenetic proteins (rhBMPs) from CHO cell cultures. Upon incubation of rhBMP-2 and rhBMP-7 with CHO cells at 37 °C, both rhBMP-2 and rhBMP-7 bound to the cell surface HSPGs in CHO cells, but only rhBMP-2 was actively internalized into CHO cells. Cell surface HSPGs were found to serve as the main receptor for rhBMP-2 internalization. It was also found that the cell surface HSPG-mediated endocytosis of rhBMP-2 occurred through both the clathrin- and caveolin-dependent pathways. Blockage of rhBMP-2 internalization by the addition of structural analogs of HSPGs such as dextran sulfate (DS) and heparin dramatically increased rhBMP-2 production in recombinant CHO (rCHO) cell cultures. Compared to the control cultures, addition of DS (1.0 g/L) and heparin (0.2 g/L) resulted in a 22.0- and 19.0-fold increase in the maximum rhBMP-2 concentration, respectively. In contrast, the production of rhBMP-7, which was not internalized into the rCHO cells, did not dramatically increase upon addition of DS and heparin. Taken together, rhBMPs have a different fate in terms of HSPG-mediated internalization in CHO cells. HSPG-mediated endocytosis of each rhBMP should be understood individually to increase the rhBMP yield in rCHO cell cultures.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the efficacy of targeted therapies in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by using a network meta-analysis of clinical trials. PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Clinicaltrials.gov were searched by using keywords related to the topic on 19 September 2018. Two investigators independently selected relevant trials by pre-determined criteria. A pooled response ratio (RR) for overall response rate (ORR) and a hazard ratio (HR) for progression-free survival (PFS) were calculated based on both the Bayesian and frequentist approaches. A total of 128 clinical trials with 39,501 participants were included in the final analysis of 14 therapeutic groups. Compared with chemotherapy, both ORR and PFS were significantly improved for afatinib, alectinib, and crizotinib, while only PFS was significantly improved for cabozantinib, ceritinib, gefitinib, and osimertinib. Consistency was observed between the direct and indirect comparisons based on the Bayesian approach statistically and the frequentist approach visually. Cabozantinib and alectinib showed the highest probability for the first-line treatment ranking in ORR (62.5%) and PFS (87.5%), respectively. The current network meta-analysis showed the comprehensive evidence-based comparative efficacy of different types of targeted therapies, which would help clinicians use targeted therapies in clinical practice.

The purpose of this study was to develop an ideal cervical cancer screening model to reduce false-negative errors in Korea where there is a high prevalence of cervical cancer. We conducted a cross-sectional study including 33,531 women who underwent routine cervical cancer screening in Korea. Colposcopic examinations were performed after abnormal results on their screening tests. Diagnostic capacities including sensitivity, specificity, and false-negative rate of each screening scenario were analysed at the CIN1 or worse (CIN1+) threshold with colposcopic biopsy results considered the gold standard. A total of 4117 women had valid results for Papanicolaou (Pap) cytology, human papilloma virus (HPV) tests, cervicography, and colposcopically directed biopsy were included in this study. The disease prevalence of CIN1+ was 38.1%. Pap-alone resulted in the highest false-negative rate of 46.9%, followed by HPV-alone at 25.1%, cervicography-alone at 18.7%, Pap/HPV-combined at 15.0%, Pap/cervicography-combined at 6.9% and Pap/HPV/cervicography-combined at 2.9% in a sample of 1570 women with CIN1+ lesions. Therefore, cervicography demonstrated excellent performance for the detection of CIN or cervical cancer and markedly reduced false-negative errors when used in combination with Pap cytology and HPV tests.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? False-negative rate of Pap smears is as high as approximately 40-50%. Limitations of the Papanicolaou (Pap) test have led to the development of new screening programmes for cervical cancer, such as combination screenings with human papillomavirus (HPV) tests or cervicography.What do the results of this study add? ABSTRACT

Recent studies have indicated that a certain level of autoantibodies may be essential for maintaining good health as well as preventing cancer development, and that the levels of serum autoantibodies can decline during malignant progression. The aim of the present study was to identify such an autoantibody-based biomarker for screening cervical lesions. An autoantigen reactive with healthy female sera was detected in the cytosolic fraction of HeLa cells, a cervical cancer cell line, and identified. Serum immunoglobulin (Ig)-G and IgM levels against the purified autoantigen in normal, cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINs) I, II and III, and cervical cancer were compared using ELISAs. The autoantigen in HeLa cells was identified to be GAPDH. The serum levels of anti-HeLa-GAPDH IgG decreased with increasing severity of cervical lesions, and similar decreases in IgM levels were revealed. Notably, the anti-HeLa-GAPDH IgG level was discovered to discriminate cervical cancer from normal samples with 80.0% sensitivity and 96.6% specificity. The serum anti-HeLa-GAPDH autoantibody level, as a single parameter, is a promising serum biomarker for screening cervical lesions.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbosacral disc herniation (LDH) is one of the most frequent musculoskeletal diseases causative of sick leave in the workplace and morbidity in daily activities. Nonsurgical managements are considered as first line treatment before surgical treatment. PURPOSE: This clinical practice guideline (CPG) is intended to provide physicians who treat patients diagnosed with LDH with a guideline supported by scientific evidence to assist in decision-making for appropriate and reasonable treatments. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: A systematic review. PATIENT SAMPLE: Studies of human subjects written in Korean or English that met the following criteria were selected: patients aged ≥18 years, clinical presentation of low back and radicular leg pain, diagnosis of LDH on radiological evaluation including computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. OUTCOMES MEASURES: Pain and functional evaluation scales such as visual analogue scale, numeric rating scale, and Oswestry disability index METHODS: The MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, Cochrane Review, and KoreaMed databases were searched for articles regarding non-surgical treatments for LDH published up to July 2017. Of the studies fulfilling these criteria, those investigating clinical results after non-surgical treatment including physical and behavioral therapy, medication, and interventional treatment in terms of pain control and functional improvements were chosen for this study. RESULTS: Nonsurgical treatments were determined to be clinically effective with regards to pain reduction and functional improvement in patients with LDH. Nevertheless, the evidence level was generally not evaluated as high degree, which might be attributed to the paucity of well-designed randomized controlled trials. Exercise and traction were strongly recommended despite moderate level of evidence. Epidural injection was strongly recommended with high degree of evidence and transforaminal approach was more strongly recommended than caudal approach. CONCLUSIONS: This CPG provides new and updated evidence-based recommendations for treatment of the patients with LDH, which suggested that, despite an absence of high degrees of evidence level, non-surgical treatments were clinically effective.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To estimate self-reported human papillomavirus (HPV) disease-related psychosocial impact among male and female patients in South Korea. DESIGN: In this multicentre cross-sectional study, psychosocial impacts were estimated using a one-time survey capturing HPV Impact Profile (HIP) results, CuestionarioEspecifico en Condilomas Acuminados (CECA; in Spanish)-'Specific questionnaire for Condylomata Acuminata' and the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) surveys. Student's t-tests or Mann-Whitney U tests were used for continuous comparisons; χ2 or Fisher's exact tests were applied for categorical comparisons. SETTING: 5098 clinics throughout Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Kwangju and Daejeon (South Korea). PARTICIPANTS: Patients with and without genital warts (GW) (males) and selected HPV diseases (females) visiting primary care physicians, obstetricians/gynaecologists, urologists and dermatologists with 2-30 years experience. RESULTS: Of 150 male and 250 female patients, HIP scores showed 85.3% of male patients with GW and 32.0% without reported moderate psychological impact (p<0.0001). In categorised total scores, 88.5% of female patients with and 66.0% without selected HPV-related diseases reported moderate or high psychological impacts (p=0.0004). In the CECA questionnaire, male patients had mean (SD) scores of 10.51 (3.79) in 'emotional health' and 15.90 (6.13) in 'sexual activity'. Female patients with GW reported lower scores in both dimensions with mean scores of 7.18 (4.17) in 'emotional health' and 10.97 (5.80) in 'sexual activity' (p<0.0001), indicating worse health-related quality of life (HRQoL). For the EQ-5D, male patients with GW reported lower mean Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores than those without (75.1 vs 81.13, p<0.0135). Mean VAS score and utility values were lower for females with HPV-related diseases than those without (72.18 vs 76.86 and 0.90 vs 0.94, respectively). CONCLUSION: In South Korea, GW in men and HPV-related diseases in women negatively impact patient well-being and HRQoL scores. Among women, those with GW suffered a greater psychosocial impact than those with other selected HPV-related diseases.

ABSTRACT

In 2016, 9-valent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been newly introduced in Korea, thus the need to develop recommendations for the vaccine has raised. Until we decide to develop a guideline, no further studies on the bi-valent or quadri-valent HPV vaccine have been announced. We searched and reviewed the literatures focused on the efficacy of 9-valent HPV vaccine, the ideal age of 3-dose schedule vaccination, the efficacy of 9-valent HPV vaccine in middle-aged women, the efficacy of the 2-dose schedule vaccination, the safety of 9-valent HPV vaccine, the possibility of additional 9-valent HPV vaccination, and cross-vaccination of 9-valent HPV vaccine. So, Korean Society of Gynecologic Oncology (KSGO) developed a guideline only for 9-valent HPV vaccine.

ABSTRACT

SPRY domain-containing SOCS box protein 1 (SPSB1) is an E3 ligase adaptor protein with unknown functions in cancer cells. In this study, we found that SPSB1 knockdown markedly decreased the viability and migration of ovarian cancer cells, while ectopic SPSB1 overexpression in IL-3-dependent Ba/F3 cells significantly increased their proliferation rate compared with empty vector-transfected cells. SPSB1 knockdown significantly elevated p21 protein and mRNA levels and induced apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells, as evidenced by increased levels of cleaved PARP and decreased levels of Bcl-2. Notably, mechanistic investigations revealed that SPSB1 accelerated p21 destabilization by directly interacting with p21 and promoting its ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal degradation. Taken together, our findings provide novel insights into the role of SPSB1 in ovarian cancer cells.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the screening capacities and cost-effectiveness of the human papillomavirus (HPV) test versus cervicography as an adjunctive test to Papanicolaou (Pap) cytology to detect high-grade cervical neoplasia in Korea, a country with a high prevalence of cervical cancer. STUDY DESIGN: Of 33,531 Korean women who underwent cervicography as a screening test for cervical cancer between January 2015 and December 2016, we retrospectively analyzed the records of 4117 women who simultaneously or subsequently underwent Pap cytology, an HPV test, cervicography, and colposcopically directed biopsy. At a threshold of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (CIN2+), based on colposcopic biopsy, we compared the diagnostic capacities and cost-effectiveness of these screening tools. RESULTS: The CIN2+ prevalence was 10.8% (446 of 4117 women) and the positive rate of high-risk HPV was 61.0% (2511 of 4117 women). Cervicography as an adjunctive to Pap cytology was a more sensitive test (97.5% vs 93.7%) with a higher odds ratio (15.65 vs 5.86) than the HPV test for detection of CIN2+ (P-value = 0.003). Moreover, the cost of cervicography co-testing was 23% less than that of HPV co-testing, decreasing the cost per patient with CIN2+ lesions from $1474 to $1135. CONCLUSION: Cervicography and Pap co-testing had superior screening capacity and cost-effectiveness for detection of preinvasive cervical lesions than HPV and Pap co-testing and may be an effective and cost-saving screening strategy in clinical practice in country with a high prevalence of cervical cancer.

ABSTRACT

Sero-epidemiological studies of human papillomavirus (HPV) have been undertaken over the last two decades. In this study, the prevalences of nine serum antibodies (anti-E6, E7 and L1 antibodies of HPV types 16, 18, and 58) were evaluated in normal (control) Korean women and women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I, CIN II, CIN III, and cervical cancer. The frequencies of all types of anti-HPV antibodies were higher in the CIN stages and cervical cancer than in normal women, and those of anti-HPV16 E6 and E7, anti-HPV18 E6 and E7, and anti-HPV58 E7 antibodies were higher in the cervical cancer group than in the CIN stages. The frequencies of antibodies against HPV16, 18, and 58 E7 tended to increase with increasing severity of cervical lesions. However, there were few differences in the frequencies of antibodies against the L1 antigens of HPV16, 18 and 58 in cervical cancer versus CIN stages. The anti-HPV antibodies were detected in 26.5% of normal, 46.3% of CIN I, 62.5% of CIN II, 51.6% of CIN III, and 75% of cancers when any of the nine antigens was used as a criterion. Correlations between HPV DNA positivity and seropositivity for anti-HPV E6, E7, or L1 antibodies were found only in HPV16 DNA-positive cervical cancers for anti-HPV16 E6 and L1 antibodies. In addition, strong positive correlations in seropositivity were found between anti-HPV16 E7 and anti-HPV58 E7 antibodies, and between anti-HPV18 E6 and anti-HPV58 E6 antibodies. These findings should advance global profiling of the seroprevalences of antibodies against HPV antigens.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The increase in the obesity rate in adult males in Korea is higher than countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and other Asian countries. We examined the trends and prevalence of major risk factors for cardiovascular disease by evaluating the weight status amongst adults from 2007 to 2015. METHODS: The study included 37,402 adults, who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The prevalence trends of cardiovascular disease risk factors were estimated for each body mass index group. RESULTS: From 2007 to 2015, significant increases in the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia were observed in normal weight adults (0.03 percentage point (%p), 0.06%p, and 0.13%p, respectively). Amongst the overweight and obese adults, a significant increase in the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia was observed, During this period, the prevalence of smoking decreased amongst obese adults and no significant changes in drinking habits and physical activity were noted across all body mass index groups. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of obesity in Korean adults is increasing, and it is necessary to implement interventions to prevent further weight gain and obesity-associated cardiovascular disease.
