ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Comminuted coronal shear fractures of the distal humerus represent rare injuries and are difficult to treat, especially comminuted capitellum and trochlear fractures (Dubberley Type III). The on-table reconstruction technique of comminuted articular fractures may be an option, although it has not been reported in the coronal shear fracture of the distal humerus. The aim of the present case series is to determine the functional and radiological outcomes of on-table reconstructed Dubberley III fractures. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 10 patients with Dubberley type III fractures in coronal shear fractures of the capitellum and trochlea who underwent an 'on-table' reconstruction technique between January 2009 and October 2019. All patients were evaluated using the disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) score, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons(ASES) score, Mayo Elbow Score Performance Index (MEPI) score and at least 4 years later. RESULTS: All cases achieved union. At the final follow-up, the mean range of elbow motion was 11.5°of flexion contracture and 131.9° of further flexion. The mean DASH score was 21.2 (5.7) points (range 13.3-32.5). The mean ASES score was 88.6 ± 7.4 (range, 77 to 100). The mean MEPI score was 87 (10) points (range 70-100). In complication, partial osteonecrosis of capitellum is developed in one patient. One patient had heterotopic ossification without functional impairment. CONCLUSION: The on-table reconstruction technique can be a reliable option in the surgical treatment of complex distal humerus fractures. This technique allows anatomical reduction of comminuted capitellum and trochlea, with a low risk of avascular necrosis over 4 years of follow-up. ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: : Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a sensorineural disease that is associated with a number of factors. In addition to age, sex, environment, lifestyle, and comorbidities are all known to be related to ARHL as well. The prevalence of ARHL can be reduced by controlling the adjustable factors that cause it. Vitamin D levels are strongly related to calcium metabolism, which can affect ARHL. This study aimed to investigate the association between vitamin D and ARHL. Subjects and Methods: : A total of 1,104 subjects aged >65 years were enrolled from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2010-2012. Every participant received both an audiological assessment and a nutritional survey. The association between ARHL and serum vitamin D concentration was analyzed using logistic regression analyses with complex sampling adjusted for confounding factors such as alcohol consumption, smoking status, mobility, and bone mineral density. Results: : Our multivariable analysis revealed that males in the group with lower serum levels of vitamin D (< 20 ng/mL) had a higher prevalence of ARHL (odds ratio, 1.638, 95% confidence interval, 1.058-2.538, p=0.027). Conclusions: : This finding suggests that lower serum levels of vitamin D are associated with ARHL in the older male population.

ABSTRACT

Mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek) is a legume with high nutritional and economic value that is cultivated widely across Asia (Kang et al. 2014). In March 2022, a leaf spot disease in mung bean was observed at the Gangneung-Wonju National University Experimental farm (Gangneung, South Korea, 37.77°N, 128.86°E). The affected plants had irregular brown-gray leaf spots, and the bottom of the leaves showed concentric brown-gray rings that eventually progressed to necrotic lesions. Regardless of the cultivar, approximately 30% of the plants in the field were infected. To isolate the pathogen, the affected leaves were surface-sterilized by washing with 70% ethanol for 1 min, followed by washing with 2% NaClO for 2 min, then rinsing with sterile distilled water. We placed 3-mm sized diseased lesions on potato-dextrose agar (PDA), then incubated them at 27 ± 1 °C in the dark for 7 days and we obtained 1 isolate (CC1). The fungus on PDA had white aerial mycelia that became gray toward the center. Single spore cultures were obtained from fungal isolate. Isolated conidia were single celled, hyaline, cylindrical, and measured between 20.75 to 22.07 µm × 5.85 to 6.92 µm (n = 20), similar to other reports of C. camelliae(Wang et al. 2016). Mycelium from the single spore isolate was used for DNA extraction using Exgene™ Plant SV / (GeneAll®, Cat.No. 117-152), and we amplified the ITS region with primers ITS1 + ITS2 and ITS3 + ITS4, a portion of the actin gene with primers ACT-512F + 738R, and a portion of the beta-tubulin gene with primers BT2aF + BT2bR (Carbone et al. 1999; Glass et al. 1995; White et al. 1990). The amplified regions were sequenced by by Macrogen® (Seoul, South Korea). Sequences were deposited under GenBank accession numbers OR523262 (ITS), OR582483 (Actin), and OR566953 (beta-tubulin). MegaBLAST analysis of the ITS1, ITS2, ACT, and TUB regions showed 99% (216/217 bp) similarity with C. camelliae strain HNCS-26 (MK041440.1), 99% (303/305 bp) similarity with C. camelliae strain G3 (ON025203.1), 99% (242/244 bp) similarity with C. camelliae strain FWT41 (MN525820.1), and 99% (456/460 bp) with C. camelliae strain LF152 (KJ955239.1), respectively. To fulfill Koch's postulates, we conducted a pathogenicity teston the mung bean cultivar VC1973A (Seonhwanokdu) grown for four weeks at 25 °C with a 16-h day/8-h night cycle, simulating the field conditions when the symptoms were observed. We tested the pathogenicity on six plants , three control and three infected plants. Using three leaf replicates per plant resulting in total of nine leaves per group. Leaves were first injured using a sterile needle then either sterile 5 mm PDA plugs or plugs with C. camelliae were placed on the leaf for control and infected conditions, respectively. Irregular gray leaf spots were observed on the abaxial and adaxial of the infected leaf after 2 weeks, like the symptoms observed in the field. This was observed only on infected leaves and nowhere else on the plant and the control plants had no infection. We re-isolated the pathogen from diseased leaves and identified it as C. camelliae using the same molecular markers described previously, completing Koch's postulate. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot caused by C. camelliae in mung bean plants in Korea, previously the fungi was reported to infect tea plants in Korea (Hassan et al. 2023). More studies are required to investigate potentially resistant mung bean varieties to minimize future damage caused by this fungus.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the development of an in-pipe inspection robot system designed for large-diameter water pipes. The robot is equipped with a Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) sensor module. The robot system is intended for pipes with diameters ranging from 900 mm to 1200 mm. The structure of the in-pipe inspection robot consists of the front and rear driving parts, with the inspection module located centrally. The robot is powered by 22 motors, including eight wheels with motors positioned at both the bottom and the top for propulsion. To ensure that the robot's center aligns with that of the pipeline during operation, lifting units have been incorporated. The robot is equipped with cameras and LiDAR sensors at the front and rear to monitor the internal environment of the pipeline. Pipeline inspection is conducted using the MFL inspection modules, and the robot's driving mechanism is designed to execute spiral maneuvers while maintaining contact with the pipeline surface during rotation. The in-pipe inspection robot is configured with wireless communication modules and batteries, allowing for wireless operation. Following its development, the inspection robot underwent driving experiments in actual pipelines to validate its performance. The field test bed used for these experiments is approximately 1 km in length. Results from the driving experiments on the field test bed confirmed the robot's ability to navigate various curvatures and obstacles within the pipeline. It is posited that the use of the developed in-pipe inspection robot can reduce economic costs and enhance the safety of inspectors when examining aging pipes.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Maternal epilepsy is a critical condition that can significantly affect mothers and fetuses. Notably, the admission of a laboring mother with uncontrolled refractory status epilepticus (RSE) to the operating room presents a challenging scenario for anesthesiologists. THE MAIN SYMPTOMS OF THE PATIENT AND THE IMPORTANT CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 30-year-old primigravida was transferred to the operating room for an emergency cesarean section. Cesarean section was performed after a provisional diagnosis of preeclampsia was made. THE MAIN DIAGNOSES, THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS, AND OUTCOMES: Cesarean section was performed under general anesthesia. During the postoperative period, the patient exhibited no seizure activity in the brain; however, she experienced mild cognitive dysfunction for up to 6 months postdelivery. The neonate were discharged without any complications. CONCLUSION: Inducing anesthesia in pregnant women with ongoing seizure activity are challenging; however, anesthesiologists provide judgment based on the balance between the safety of the mother and fetus and the balance between patient monitoring and the progression of anesthesia. This challenge can be addressed through multidisciplinary collaboration.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study compared clinical outcomes between arthroscopic and open repair of triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) foveal tears in chronic distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability patients. Methods: A total of 79 patients who had gone through foveal repair of TFCC using arthroscopic technique (n = 35) or open technique (n = 44) between 2016 and 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The visual analog scale (VAS) score for pain, active range of motion (ROM), grip strength, Mayo Modified Wrist Score (MMWS), Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire score, and Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) score at 2-4-6-12-24 months postoperatively were compared between two groups. Results: Two years after the operation, clinical parameters (VAS, MMWS, DASH, and PRWE), grip strength, and ROM showed significant advancement in the two groups in comparison to their values measured preoperatively (p < 0.001). Nonetheless, we could not identify any statistically significant differences in the above clinical factors between the two groups. The arthroscopic group showed a better flexion-extension arc at 2 months and supination-pronation arc at 2 and 4 months than the open group (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences between the two groups at 2 years postoperatively. Ten patients (12.6%) had recurrent instability (three in the arthroscopic group and seven in the open group, p = 0.499). Similarly, both groups showed no significant difference in the return to work period. Conclusions: Arthroscopic foveal repair of TFCC provided similarly favorable outcomes and early recovery of pain and ROM compared to open repair.

Curvature is a general factor for various two-dimensional (2D) materials due to their flexibility, which is not yet fully unveiled to control their physical properties. In particular, the effect of structural disorder with random curvature formation on excitons in 2D semiconductors is not fully understood. Here, the correlation between structural disorder and exciton formation in monolayer MoS2 on SiO2 was investigated by using photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy. We found that the curvature-induced charge localization along with band gap fluctuations aid the formation of the localized charged excitons (such as trions). In the substrate-supported region, the trion population is enhanced by a localized charge due to the microscopic random bending strain, while the trion is suppressed in the suspended region which exhibits negligible bending strain, anomalously even though the dielectric screening effect is lower than that of the supported region. The redistribution of each exciton by the bending strain leads to a huge variation (∼100-fold) in PL intensity between the supported and suspended regions, which cannot be fully comprehended by external potential disorders such as a random distribution of charged impurities. The peak position of PL in MoS2/SiO2 is inversely proportional to the Raman peak position of E12g, indicating that the bending strain is correlated with PL. The supported regions exhibit an indirect portion that was not shown in the suspended regions or atomically flat substrates. The understanding of the structural disorder effect on excitons provides a fundamental path for optoelectronics and strain engineering of 2D semiconductors.

Acid leaching has been widely applied to treat contaminated soil, however, it contains several inorganic pollutants. The decommissioning of nuclear power plants introduces radioactive and soluble U(VI), a substance posing chemical toxicity to humans. Our investigation sought to ascertain the efficacy of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), an highly efficient adsorbent, in treating U(VI) in wastewater. The adsorption equilibrium of U(VI) by h-BN reached saturation within a mere 2 h. The adsorption of U(VI) by h-BN appears to be facilitated through electrostatic attraction, as evidenced by the observed impact of pH variations, acidic agents (i.e., HCl or H2SO4), and the presence of background ions on the adsorption performance. A reusability test demonstrated the successful completion of five cycles of adsorption/desorption, relying on the surface characteristics of h-BN as influenced by solution pH. Based on the experimental variables of initial U(VI) concentration, exposure time, temperature, pH, and the presence of background ions/organic matter, a feature importance analysis using random forest (RF) was carried out to evaluate the correlation between performances and conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to conduct the adsorption of U(VI) generated from real contaminated soil by h-BN, followed by interpretation of the correlation between performance and conditions using RF. Lastly, a. plausible adsorption mechanism between U(VI) and h-BN was explained based on the experimental results, characterizations, and a. comparison with previous adsorption studies on the removal of heavy metals by h-BN.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between clinical experience and death certificate (DC) errors by analyzing DCs written by experienced emergency physicians (EPs). METHODS: DCs issued by four experienced EPs over a 10-year period were retrospectively reviewed. DC errors were divided into major and minor errors based on whether they affected the cause of death (COD) determination. The errors were judged through first and second evaluations. Basic information regarding DCs and 10-year changes in DC errors were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 505 DCs were analyzed, with an average of 34 to 70 for each study year. The number of CODs written in the DCs tended to decrease over time. The presentation of major DC errors did not show a tendency to change over time. However, the sum of the major and minor errors tended to increase over time. Secondary conditions as the underlying COD tended to increase, and the incompatible causal relationships between CODs tended to decrease over time in the detailed analysis of major errors. The increasing tendency for incorrect other significant conditions, incorrect type of accident, incorrect intention of the external cause, no record of the trauma mechanism, and record of the trauma mechanism without another COD were found in the detailed analysis of minor errors. CONCLUSION: DC errors did not decrease as clinical experience increased. Education to reduce DC errors and a feedback process for written DCs are necessary, regardless of clinical experience.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of radiculopathy due to lumbar spinal stenosis has been on the increase in the aging population. However, patients aged ≥ 80 years hesitate to undergo conventional open surgery under general anesthesia because of the risk of postoperative morbidity and adverse events. Therefore, less invasive surgical alternatives are required for the elderly or medically handicapped patients. Transforaminal endoscopic lumbar lateral recess decompression (TELLRD) may be helpful for those patients. This study aimed to demonstrate the efficacy of TELLRD for treating radiculopathy in octogenarian patients. A total of 21 consecutive octogenarian patients with lumbar foraminal stenosis underwent TELLRD between January 2017 and January 2021. The inclusion criterion was unilateral radiculopathy, which stemmed from lumbar lateral recess stenosis. The pain source was verified using imaging studies and selective nerve blocks. Full-scale lateral canal decompression was performed using a percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic approach under local anesthesia. We found the pain scores and functional status improved significantly during the 24-month follow-up period. The clinical improvement rate was 95.24% (20 of 21 patients) with no systemic complication. In conclusion, endoscopic lateral recess decompression via the transforaminal approach is practical for octogenarian patients.

ABSTRACT

It is crucial to establish appropriate background concentrations to discern heavy metal pollution in the marine environment. In this study, we analyzed heavy metals in deep-sea sediment cores to determine regional background concentrations at the East-Sea Byeong Ocean dumping site. The vertical profiles of heavy metals were categorized into three groups based on their contamination characteristics, and regional background levels for 12 metals were determined using pre-1900 averages. The enrichment factor, contamination factor, and pollution load index, calculated using regional background concentrations, indicated significant contamination by Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb during the ocean dumping period. These results differ from those obtained using global average concentrations. This underscores the importance of considering regional characteristics to minimize the risk of misinterpreting anthropogenic impacts. The approach based on local information is considered useful when sediment quality guidelines are absent or inapplicable.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study addresses declining physical fitness among Korean firefighters due to a low exercise participation rate caused by the absence of exercise instructors. The research explores Virtual Mate (VM), a Kinect-based mixed reality device, as a potential solution, but its capacity to replace training instructors in enhancing physical fitness remains uncertain. METHODS: Twenty Korean male firefighters were divided into two groups: the exercise group received an 8-week intervention using VM, while the control group maintained regular physical activity. Cardiopulmonary function and muscle function were measured. RESULTS: After 8 weeks, the exercise group demonstrated a significant improvement in VO 2peak . Furthermore, there were notable enhancements in the strength and endurance of most knee, shoulder, and trunk flexors and extensors. CONCLUSIONS: Integrating VM into an exercise program can effectively improve cardiorespiratory and muscular function in Korean firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases of peri-Rolandic area is crucial as it directly impacts the quality of life for cancer patients. Surgery or stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is considered for peri-Rolandic brain metastases as for other brain metastases. However, the benefit of each treatment modality on functional outcome has not been clearly defined for this tumor. The purpose of this study is to compare the functional course of each treatment and to suggest an effective treatment for patients' quality of life. METHODS: Fifty-two patients who had undergone SRS or surgery for brain metastasis confirmed by enhanced MRI were enrolled retrospectively. Overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS), and functional outcomes were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, univariate, multivariate analysis, and Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS: Median OS and PFS were 13.3 months and 8.9 months in our study population. Treatment modalities were not significant factors for OS and PFS. Extracranial systemic cancer progression was significant factor for both parameters (p=0.030 for OS and p=0.040 for PFS). Median symptom improvement (improvement of at least 1 grade after surgery compared to preoperative state) time was significantly shorter in surgery group than in the SRS group (10.5 days vs. 37.5 days, p=0.034). CONCLUSION: Surgery for brain metastases can contribute to a positive quality of life for the remaining duration of the patient's life.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Insufficient physical activity due to social distancing and suppressed outdoor activities increases vulnerability to diseases like cardiovascular diseases, sarcopenia, and severe COVID-19. While bodyweight exercises, such as squats, effectively boost physical activity, incorrect postures risk abnormal muscle activation joint strain, leading to ineffective sessions or even injuries. Avoiding incorrect postures is challenging for novices without expert guidance. Existing solutions for remote coaching and computer-assisted posture correction often prove costly or inefficient. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use deep neural networks to develop a personal workout assistant that offers feedback on squat postures using only mobile devices-smartphones and tablets. Deep learning mimicked experts' visual assessments of proper exercise postures. The effectiveness of the mobile app was evaluated by comparing it with exercise videos, a popular at-home workout choice. METHODS: Twenty participants were recruited without squat exercise experience and divided into an experimental group (EXP) with 10 individuals aged 21.90 (SD 2.18) years and a mean BMI of 20.75 (SD 2.11) and a control group (CTL) with 10 individuals aged 22.60 (SD 1.95) years and a mean BMI of 18.72 (SD 1.23) using randomized controlled trials. A data set with over 20,000 squat videos annotated by experts was created and a deep learning model was trained using pose estimation and video classification to analyze the workout postures. Subsequently, a mobile workout assistant app, Home Alone Exercise, was developed, and a 2-week interventional study, in which the EXP used the app while the CTL only followed workout videos, showed how the app helps people improve squat exercise. RESULTS: The EXP significantly improved their squat postures evaluated by the app after 2 weeks (Pre: 0.20 vs Mid: 4.20 vs Post: 8.00, P=.001), whereas the CTL (without the app) showed no significant change in squat posture (Pre: 0.70 vs Mid: 1.30 vs Post: 3.80, P=.13). Significant differences were observed in the left (Pre: 75.06 vs Mid: 76.24 vs Post: 63.13, P=.02) and right (Pre: 71.99 vs Mid: 76.68 vs Post: 62.82, P=.03) knee joint angles in the EXP before and after exercise, with no significant effect found for the CTL in the left (Pre: 73.27 vs Mid: 74.05 vs Post: 70.70, P=.68) and right (Pre: 70.82 vs Mid: 74.02 vs Post: 70.23, P=.61) knee joint angles. CONCLUSIONS: EXP participants trained with the app experienced faster improvement and learned more nuanced details of the squat exercise. The proposed mobile app, offering cost-effective self-discovery feedback, effectively taught users about squat exercises without expensive in-person trainer sessions. ABSTRACT

Between 1999 and 2009, 344,000 m3 of red mud was released into the red mud dumping zone in the East Sea-Byeong ocean dumping site in South Korea. This study aimed to assess the impacts before and after the 2010 red mud dumping ban. We quantified total Cr concentrations by depth from core sediment samples at the red mud dumping station and evaluated benthic communities in 2004, 2009, 2012, 2017, and 2019. At the dumping station DB-085, the Cr content in the upper layer (0-10 cm) exceeded the effect range median criteria in all study years and decreased with time. Geochemical fraction studies using sequential extraction methods from core sediment samples in 2004, 2009, and 2017 showed high ratios of non-residual fractions (anthropogenic inputs), indicating persistent potential long-term risk after the 2010 ban. Additionally, we confirmed that Thyasira tokunagai, an opportunistic and contamination-stress-resistant species, dominated the study station.

ABSTRACT

Nephrons are generally not distributed in the head kidney of teleost. Nonetheless, in this study, the nephron structure was identified in the head kidney of three species of Sebastes (Sebastes inermis, Sebastes schlegelii and Sebastes thompsoni). The kidney is Y shaped, with the development in the head kidney. The nephron structure was confirmed in the head kidney and body kidney. In addition, the nephron consisted of renal corpuscles and tubules, and the renal corpuscle consisted of the Bowman's capsule and glomerulus. Histologically, previous studies reported that the nephron structure is similar to that of other marine teleost. The renal tubule is a simple columnar epithelial layer with microvilli and cilia on the free surface, which is observed as a brush border. The Rrk (relative area ratio of kidney to body surface) was 5.14%, 7.58% and 5.17% in S. inermis, S. schlegelii and S. thompsoni, respectively. The Gar (glomerular area ratio of the head kidney) was higher in the central area than in the peripheral area, and species, which showed significant difference (P < 0.05), were in the following order: S. thompsoni (1.60%) > S. schlegelii (0.90%) > S. inermis (0.66%).

ABSTRACT

From 1991 to 2021, 16 categories of land-based waste, totaling 131,400,000 m3, were dumped at three sites in Korea. The concentration of heavy metals varied by waste type, with organic sludge showing higher levels than liquid waste. While wastewater treatment sludge was the most commonly discarded waste, the quantity and types of waste disposed of varied by site. Before the 2015 ban on ocean dumping, 62,330 tons of heavy metals were introduced, including zinc, copper, chromium, lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury in descending order of frequency. In each heavy metal category, the portion of land-based waste varied by dumping site. Compared to heavy metals from atmospheric deposition, anthropogenic heavy metal input from dumping was up to 141 times higher for copper. This study serves as a reference for estimating the impact of pollutants from dumped waste.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Exercise and diet have positive effects on hepatic fat reduction, and protein supplementation is known to lower hepatic fat accumulation. However, the effect of a combination of exercise and whey protein supplementation (WPS) on hepatic fat content (HFC) is unknown. METHODS: We investigated the effect of WPS on HFC during resistance exercise and diet control intervention for four weeks. A total of 34 sedentary males participated and were randomly assigned to two groups: a protein supplement group (PSG, n = 18) and a control group (CG, n = 16). The PSG took 60 g of WPS per day, and the CG took 60 g of an isocaloric placebo per day. All participants were fed a calorie-controlled diet throughout the study period, with their daily caloric intake determined by their resting metabolic rate and physical activity level. Both groups performed resistance exercises supervised by experts at 60-70% of their maximum efforts for 60 min/day, 6 days/week for 4 weeks. HFC was assessed using the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) after an 8 h fast, at pre-, mid-, and post-intervention. Liver enzymes and lipid profile were also analyzed after an 8 h fast and pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS: The CAP was significantly reduced after 4 weeks of intervention in both groups (PSG, p < .001; CG, p = .002). However, there was no significant interaction between the group and changes in CAP. Interestingly, when comparing the pre- and mid-tests, both groups also had significantly reduced CAP (PSG, p = .027; CG, p = .028), but there was a significant difference in the amount of change in CAP between the two groups (PSG, -47.2 ± 25.4 dB/m; CG, -19.5 ± 15.1 dB/m; p = .042). For liver enzymes, there was a significant interaction between the two groups and a change in aspartate transaminase (AST) (p = .038). However, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were significantly decreased only in the PSG group (p = .002). In lipids, both groups showed significantly decreased total cholesterol (p < .001) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < .001) after the intervention. CONCLUSION: Our data showed that WPS may not enhance the overall effects of resistance exercise on HFC and lipid profiles. However, in part, WPS may have a beneficial effect on liver enzymatic changes and rapid response to resistance exercise-induced HFC reduction.

ABSTRACT

While dimensional change under thermal loading dictates various device failure mechanisms in soft materials, the interplay between microstructures and thermal expansion remains underexplored. Here, we develop a novel method to directly probe the thermal expansion for nanoscale polymer films using an atomic force microscope as well as confining active thermal volume. In a model system, spin-coated poly(methyl methacrylate), we find that the in-plane thermal expansion is enhanced by 20-fold compared to that along the out-of-plane directions in confined dimensions. Our molecular dynamics simulations show that the collective motion of side groups along backbone chains uniquely drives the enhancement of thermal expansion anisotropy of polymers in the nanoscale limit. This work unveils the intimate role of the microstructure of polymer films on its thermal-mechanical interaction, paving a route to judiciously enhance the reliability in a broad range of thin-film devices.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Despite growing evidence showing the effects of exercise and cognitive trainings on enhancing attention, little is known about the combined effects of exergame on attention in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Exergame, a form of exercise using a video game, has both cognitive stimulation and physical activity components and has been shown to improve cognitive function in children. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exergaming on attention and to compare the effect induced by exergaming with the effect of aerobic exercise on attention in children with ADHD. METHODS: In all, 30 children with ADHD, aged 8-12 years, were randomly divided into an exergaming group (EXG; n=16) or a bicycle exercise group (BEG; n=14). Before and after the 4-week intervention, the Frankfurter Aufmerksamkeits-Inventar (FAIR; Frankfurt Attention Inventory) test was administrated, and event-related potentials during the Go/No-go task was measured to assess attention. RESULTS: After intervention, both the EXG and BEG had significantly increased selective attention and continuous attention (all P<.001), as well as self-control on the FAIR test (EXG: P=.02 and BEG: P=.005). Similarly, both the EXG and BEG had significantly reduced response time on the Go/No-go test (all P<.001). For the Go response, the N2 amplitude (frontocentral maximal negativity) was significantly increased in Fz (midfrontal line) in the EXG (P=.003) but was not changed in the BEG (P=.97). Importantly, the N2 amplitude in Fz was significantly greater in the EXG compared to the BEG (Go: P=.001 and No-go: P=.008). CONCLUSIONS: Exergaming has the comparable effects to bicycle exercise to enhance attention in children with ADHD, suggesting that exergaming can be used as an alternative treatment for children with ADHD.
