ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction can provide breast cancer patients with lasting psychosocial, functional, and body image benefits. While sociodemographic factors affecting the receipt of breast reconstruction have been well studied, the cultural factors influencing patients' decisions to undergo breast reconstruction remain unclear. There are currently no reviews on cultural factors influencing breast reconstruction decision-making. This scoping review aimed to broadly evaluate the current literature on cultural factors that influence the receipt of breast reconstruction in breast cancer patients who have undergone mastectomies. METHODS: A combination of keywords and subject headings was used to search for articles related to breast reconstruction and decision-making. Databases were searched from inception to November 20, 2023. Screening was performed according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines and quantitative studies examining the receipt of breast reconstruction in breast cancer patients following mastectomy were evaluated for inclusion. RESULTS: Of the 4,520 studies that underwent screening, 61 studies were included in the final review. The majority of studies included in the review were retrospective studies and studies in the United States. Included studies were evaluated for cultural influences on the receipt of breast reconstruction. Six themes emerged across the included studies: race and ethnicity, language and communication barriers, education and literacy, cultural competency, patient perceptions, and family and relationships. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to well-established influences on breast reconstruction like race and ethnicity, this review broadly identified additional cultural factors that influence patients' decisions to undergo breast reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

This systematic review and meta-analysis delved into the impact of race and ethnicity on outcomes following foot and ankle surgery, an area garnering increasing attention within the medical community. Despite significant literature on postsurgical clinical and functional outcomes, limited research has explored the influence of racial and ethnic factors on postoperative outcomes. In this study, data from 33 relevant studies, involving a total of 557,734 patients, were analyzed to assess outcomes across different racial and ethnic groups. Notably, only 6 studies met the criteria for inclusion in the final meta-analysis due to variations in outcome reporting. Findings revealed disparities in functional scores, pain levels, and resource utilization among different racial and ethnic cohorts. Specifically, non-White and minority patients exhibited higher rates of foot and ankle fractures and lower extremity surgeries, worse functional outcomes, increased pain, longer hospital stays, and a greater incidence of complications compared to their White counterparts. However, some studies presented contradictory results, emphasizing the necessity for further investigation to elucidate these discrepancies fully. This research underscores the importance of considering racial and ethnic factors in foot and ankle surgery outcomes and highlights the need for targeted interventions to address existing disparities.

Background: Tattooing is a widespread practice and has increased in popularity over time. Many lesions have been described in relation to tattoos, including malignant tumors. Objectives: The primary goal of this review is to determine whether the frequency of published cases of skin cancers within tattoos has been increasing over time. Methods: Our review is in adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and reporting criteria. The databases MEDLINE via PubMed, Embase via Elsevier, and Scopus via Elsevier were searched from inception to February 23, 2023. No data or publication date limits were imposed. Results: Our review identified 160 cases of cutaneous tumors arising within tattoos. An increase in published cases over time was observed. Most reported tumors developed within red tattoo pigment (36.9%), with the largest contribution by squamous cell carcinoma and keratoacanthoma lesions. Limitations: There was a lack of consistency of information in published case reports which limited the scope of our analysis. Small sample size was also a limitation of this review. Conclusions: With the increased popularity of tattoos, it is helpful to continue reporting cases of cutaneous malignancies within tattoos. Awareness of the frequency and severity of tumors within tattoos may be communicated to the public.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) is a common and emotionally-taxing side effect of chemotherapy, including taxane agents used frequently in treatment of gynecologic cancers. Scalp hypothermia, also known as "cold caps", is a possible method to prevent severe CIA, studied primarily in the breast cancer population. OBJECTIVES: To compile existing data on scalp hypothermia in cancer patients receiving taxane chemotherapy in order to investigate its application to the gynecologic cancer population. SEARCH STRATEGY: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Cochrane were searched through January 31, 2023. SELECTION CRITERIA: Full-text manuscripts reporting on the results of scalp hypothermia in patients receiving taxane-based chemotherapy. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Binomial proportions were summed, and random-effects meta-analyses performed. MAIN RESULTS: From 1424 records, we included 31 studies, representing 14 different countries. Only 5 studies included gynecologic cancer patients. We extracted the outcome of the proportion of patients with <50% hair loss. Among 2179 included patients, 60.7% were reported to have <50% hair loss (meta-analysis: 60.6%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 54.9-66.1%). Among the 28 studies reporting only on taxane-based chemotherapy, the rate of <50% hair loss was 60.0% (meta-analysis: 60.9%, (95% CI: 54.9-66.7%). In comparative studies, hair loss was significantly less in patients who received scalp hypothermia versus those who did not (49.3% versus 0% with <50% hair loss; OR 40.3, 95% CI: 10.5-154.8). Scalp cooling achieved <50% hair loss in patients receiving paclitaxel (67.7%; meta-analysis 69.9%, 95% CI 64.1-75.4%) and docetaxel (57.1%; meta-analysis 60.5%, 95% CI 50.0-71.6%). Meta-analysis on patient satisfaction in regard to scalp cooling found a satisfaction rate of 78.9% (95% CI 69.1-87.4%). CONCLUSION: Scalp hypothermia may be an effective method to reduce some cases of CIA due to taxane chemotherapy, especially paclitaxel. More trials need to be done to determine the precise effects of scalp hypothermia in gynecologic cancer patients.

We focus here on the evaluation of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols and their potential to promote equity in cancer care and outcomes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the effect of contraceptive methods following gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) on timing of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) remission, risk of post-molar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN), risk of unintended incident pregnancy, and interactions between contraceptive methods and disease treatment. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a search of primary literature with search terms related to GTD and contraception through April 2023 in PubMed and extrapolated our search to other platforms. Randomized controlled trials, observational studies and case reports were eligible for inclusion if they reported on patients with known GTD who received a contraceptive method for pregnancy prevention. Data was abstracted on our main outcomes of interest: timing of beta-hCG remission, risk of post-molar GTN, risk of unintended incident pregnancy, and interactions between contraceptive methods and cancer-directed systemic disease treatment (e.g., chemotherapy). At least two authors reviewed manuscripts at each screening stage with consensus reached before data extraction. Quality assessment checklists were used to assess risk of bias for the different study types. RESULTS: Five thousand one hundred and five studies were identified in the database search, of which 42 were included for analysis. Eight thousand two hundred and ninety four participants were evaluated. Over half of the studies were case reports and only two were randomized controlled trials. While there was sparse data on all outcomes, no differences were noted in beta-hCG monitoring, risk of post-molar GTN or incident pregnancies between different contraceptive types. Interactions between contraceptive methods and cancer-directed systemic disease treatment (e.g., chemotherapy) or specific adverse events of contraceptive methods were not identified. CONCLUSIONS: Data on contraceptive use following GTD is limited, but use of both hormonal and non-hormonal modern contraceptive methods appears safe. Counseling patients on the full range of contraceptive methods is important to help patients achieve their reproductive health goals and minimize the risk of disease progression through incomplete beta-hCG monitoring prior to future pregnancy. IMPLICATIONS: Hormonal and non-hormonal contraceptive options may be used by patients following gestational trophoblastic disease without apparent changes in beta-hCG regression or risk of post-molar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.

ABSTRACT

AbstractMorning Report is a time-honored tradition where physicians-in-training present cases to their colleagues and clinical experts to collaboratively examine an interesting patient presentation. The Morning Report section seeks to carry on this tradition by presenting a patient's chief concern and story, inviting the reader to develop a differential diagnosis and discover the diagnosis alongside the authors of the case. This report examines the story of a 52-year-old man who sought evaluation for a chronic nasal lesion that had eroded into his nasal septum. Using questions, physical examination, and testing, an illness script for the presentation emerges. As the clinical course progresses, the differential is refined until a diagnosis is made.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Due to the health consequences arising from climate change, medical students will inevitably interact with affected patients during their training and careers. Accordingly, medical schools must incorporate education on the impacts of climate change on health and equity into their curricula. We created a curricular thread called "Climate Change, Health, and Equity" in the first-year preclinical medical program to teach foundational concepts and foster self-reflection and critical consciousness. METHODS: The authors developed a continuum of practice including administrators, educators and faculty members, students, and community partners to plan and design curricular activities. First-year medical students at Duke University School of Medicine participated in seven mandatory foundational lectures and two experiential learning opportunities in the local community. Following completion of activities, students wrote a critical reflection essay and completed a self-directed learning exercise. Essays were evaluated using the REFLECT rubric to assess if students achieved critical reflection and for thematic analysis by Bloom's Taxonomy. RESULTS: All students (118) submitted essays. A random sample of 30 (25%) essays underwent analysis. Evaluation by the REFLECT rubric underscored that all students were reflecting or critically reflecting on thread content. Thematic analysis highlighted that all students (30/30, 100%) were adept at identifying new areas of medical knowledge and connecting concepts to individual experiences, institutional practices, and public health and policy. Most students (27/30; 90%) used emotionally laden words, expressing negative feelings like frustration and fear but also positive sentiments of solidarity and hope regarding climate change and effects on health. Many students (24/30; 80%) expressed actionable items at every level including continuing self-directed learning and conversing with patients, minimizing healthcare waste, and advocating for climate-friendly policies. CONCLUSION: After participating in the curricular thread, most medical students reflected on cognitive, affective, and actionable aspects relating to climate change, health, and equity.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is a significant global health concern affecting millions of women each year. Digital health platforms are an easily accessible intervention that can improve patient care, though their efficacy in breast cancer care is unknown. This scoping review aims to provide an overview of existing research on the utilization of digital health platforms for breast cancer care and identify key trends and gaps in the literature. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across electronic databases, including Ovid MEDLINE, Elsevier EMBASE, and Elsevier Scopus databases. The search strategy incorporated keywords related to "digital health platforms", "breast cancer care", and associated terminologies. After screening for eligibility, a total of 25 articles were included in this scoping review. The identified studies comprised mobile applications and web-based interventions. These platforms demonstrated various functionalities, including patient education, symptom monitoring, treatment adherence, and psychosocial support. The findings indicate the potential of digital health platforms in improving breast cancer care and patients' overall experiences. The positive impact on patient outcomes, including improved quality of life and reduced psychological distress, underscores the importance of incorporating digital health solutions into breast cancer management. Additional research is necessary to validate the effectiveness of these platforms in diverse patient populations and assess their impact on healthcare-resource utilization.

OBJECTIVE: Anger is one of the most prevalent concerns among individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is often a residual symptom following PTSD treatment. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine how effective trauma-focused PTSD psychotherapies are in reducing anger. METHOD: The study was reported according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. This study conducted a systematic review of studies that reported the effect of trauma-focused treatments on anger outcomes. Additionally, a meta-analysis was conducted with a subset of studies that used randomized controlled trials (RCTs) methodologies to compare trauma-focused PTSD treatments to nontrauma-focused and control conditions. RESULTS: The systematic review included 16 studies with a total of 1,846 participants. In 11 of the studies, there was a significant decrease in an anger dimension following treatment. Eight studies with 417 total participants met inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis yielded a pooled effect size of PTSD treatment on anger of Hedges's g = 0.33. CONCLUSION: Overall, trauma-focused treatments for PTSD significantly improve anger, but the magnitude of change is small-to-medium. Additional research is needed to determine how best to maximize anger outcomes following trauma-focused treatment or determine if and when targeted anger treatment is needed. ABSTRACT

Importance: Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of death due to bacterial bloodstream infection. Female sex has been identified as a risk factor for mortality in S aureus bacteremia (SAB) in some studies, but not in others. Objective: To determine whether female sex is associated with increased mortality risk in SAB. Data Sources: MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from inception to April 26, 2023. Study Selection: Included studies met the following criteria: (1) randomized or observational studies evaluating adults with SAB, (2) included 200 or more patients, (3) reported mortality at or before 90 days following SAB, and (4) reported mortality stratified by sex. Studies on specific subpopulations (eg, dialysis, intensive care units, cancer patients) and studies that included patients with bacteremia by various microorganisms that did not report SAB-specific data were excluded. Data Extraction and Synthesis: Data extraction and quality assessment were performed by 1 reviewer and verified by a second reviewer. Risk of bias and quality were assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Mortality data were combined as odds ratios (ORs). Main Outcome and Measures: Mortality at or before 90-day following SAB, stratified by sex. Results: From 5339 studies retrieved, 89 were included (132 582 patients; 50 258 female [37.9%], 82 324 male [62.1%]). Unadjusted mortality data were available from 81 studies (109 828 patients) and showed increased mortality in female patients compared with male patients (pooled OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.06-1.18). Adjusted mortality data accounting for additional patient characteristics and treatment variables were available from 32 studies (95 469 patients) and revealed a similarly increased mortality risk in female relative to male patients (pooled adjusted OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.11-1.27). No evidence of publication bias was encountered. Conclusions and Relevance: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, female patients with SAB had higher mortality risk than males in both unadjusted and adjusted analyses. Further research is needed to study the potential underlying mechanisms.

OBJECTIVES: The current guidance for selection of recall periods recommends considering the design of the study, nature of the condition, patient's burden and ability to recall, and intent of the outcome measure. Empirical study of the accuracy of recall periods is recommended; however, there is not consensus on how to quantitatively evaluate the consistency of results from patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) with different recall periods. We conducted a systematic review to describe quantitative methods for evaluating results obtained from PROMs with differing recall periods to lay the groundwork for establishing consensus. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and American Psychological Association PsycINFO for studies where participants are given the same health-related measure (eg, quality of life, well-being, functioning, and pain) with differing recall periods. RESULTS: A total of 7174 abstracts were screened. The 30 included studies reflected a wide range of domains, including pain, fatigue, and sexual behavior and function. The recall periods ranged from momentary to 6 months. The analytic approaches varied, including different methods for assessing relative agreement, absolute agreement, and for assessing combined relative and absolute agreement. CONCLUSIONS: We found variability in how PROM recall periods were evaluated, suggesting an opportunity for greater consensus on methodological approach. As a starting point, we provide recommendations for which methods are preferred for which contexts.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants are associated with survival from out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Because prompt delivery of bystander CPR (B-CPR) doubles survival and B-CPR rates are low, we sought to assess whether gender, socioeconomic status (SES), race, and ethnicity are associated with lower rates of B-CPR and CPR training. METHODS: This scoping review was conducted as part of the continuous evidence evaluation process for the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care as part of the Resuscitation Education Science section. We searched PubMed and excluded citations that were abstracts only, letters or editorials, and pediatric studies. RESULTS: We reviewed 762 manuscripts and identified 24 as relevant; 4 explored gender disparities; 12 explored SES; 11 explored race and ethnicity; and 3 had overlapping themes, all of which examined B-CPR or CPR training. Females were less likely to receive B-CPR than males in public locations. Observed gender disparities in B-CPR may be associated with individuals fearing accusations of inappropriate touching or injuring female victims. Studies demonstrated that low-SES neighborhoods were associated with lower rates of B-CPR and CPR training. In the US, predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods were associated with lower rates of B-CPR and CPR training. Language barriers were associated with lack of CPR training. CONCLUSION: Gender, SES, race, and ethnicity impact receiving B-CPR and obtaining CPR training. The impact of this is that these populations are less likely to receive B-CPR, which decreases their odds of surviving SCA. These health disparities must be addressed. Our work can inform future research, education, and public health initiatives to promote equity in B-CPR knowledge and provision. As an immediate next step, organizations that develop and deliver CPR curricula to potential bystanders should engage affected communities to determine how best to improve training and delivery of B-CPR.

OBJECTIVE: Digital health tools, including smartphone applications (apps), websites, and online search engines, are increasingly being utilized for health data collection and patient education. Studies have shown that these tools can help disseminate information widely and even help guide patients through acute surgical episodes. We aimed to search the literature to summarize available studies on using digital health tools for patients undergoing spine surgery. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of PubMed MEDLINE, Elsevier EMBASE, and Elsevier Scopus databases, as well as ClinicalTrials.gov up to March 11, 2022. RESULTS: Forty-four full-text articles were included and qualitatively analyzed. Studies were broadly grouped into those that analyzed the quality of web-based materials for patients, the quality of YouTube videos for spine surgery, the development, feasibility, and implementation of mobile apps for patients, and randomized controlled trials for integrating mobile apps into perioperative care. CONCLUSIONS: We presented a systematic review analyzing the current landscape of digital health for patients undergoing spine surgery. Internet patient education materials in searchable websites and YouTube videos are of poor quality, lacking in readability to the average patient and robustness of information needed for patients to make informed decisions about pursuing spine surgery. However, there lies promise in digital apps developed to guide patients through surgery and collect postoperative outcomes.

Dexmedetomidine is a promising alternative sedative agent for moderate-severe Traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Although the data are limited, the posited benefits of dexmedetomidine in this population are a reduction in secondary brain injury compared with current standard sedative regimens. In this scoping review, we critically appraised the literature to examine the effects of dexmedetomidine in patients with moderate-severe TBI to examine the safety, efficacy, and cerebral and systemic physiological outcomes within this population. We sought to identify gaps in the literature and generate directions for future research. Two researchers and a librarian queried PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and APA PsycINFO databases. Of 920 studies imported for screening, 11 were identified for inclusion in the review. The primary outcomes in the included studied were cerebral physiology, systemic hemodynamics, sedation levels and delirium, and the presence of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity. Dexmedetomidine dosing ranged from 0.2 to 1 ug/kg/h, with 3 studies using initial boluses of 0.8 to 1.0 ug/kg over 10 minutes. Dexmedetomidine used independently or as an adjunct seems to exhibit a similar hemodynamic safety profile compared with standard sedation regimens, albeit with transient episodes of bradycardia and hypotension, decrease episodes of agitation and may serve to alleviate symptoms of sympathetic hyperactivity. This scoping review suggests that dexmedetomidine is a safe and efficacious sedation strategy in patients with TBI. Given its rapid onset of action and anxiolytic properties, dexmedetomidine may serve as a feasible sedative for TBI patients.

Post-surgical scarring impacts quality of life (QOL) and is a significant source of morbidity. Existing treatments targeted at improving the appearance and morbidity of scarring include laser-based therapies. Although lasers are frequently used to improve scar appearance, the effects on QOL are unclear. A scoping review was conducted to assess the impact of laser-based therapy for patients with surgical facial scarring on QOL. Throughout literature review was conducted with the guidance of a medical librarian. Relevant articles underwent two rounds of screening by two, independent reviewers. Data were extracted from each article and later analyzed. Of the four articles analyzed, laser-based therapies were demonstrated as effective in improving QOL for patients with facial scars resultant from surgical intervention. Laser-based therapy should be considered when treating facial scarring resultant from surgical intervention, as it has been shown to improve patient QOL. Standardization of QOL assessment and further studies expanding scar inclusion should be pursued given the paucity of information found through this review.

OBJECTIVE: Racial disparities are ubiquitous across medicine in the US. This study aims to assess the evidence of racial disparities within neurosurgery and across its subspecialties, with a specific goal of quantifying the distribution of articles devoted to either identifying, understanding, or reducing disparities. METHODS: The authors searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus databases by using keywords to represent the concepts of neurosurgery, patients, racial disparities, and specific study types. Two independent reviewers screened the article titles and abstracts for relevance. A third reviewer resolved conflicts. Data were then extracted from the included articles and each article was categorized into one of three phases: identifying, understanding, or reducing disparities. This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. RESULTS: Three hundred seventy-one studies published between 1985 and 2023 were included. The distribution of racial disparities literature was not equally spread among specialties, with spine representing approximately 48.3% of the literature, followed by tumor (22.1%) and general neurosurgery (12.9%). Most studies were dedicated to identifying racial disparities (83.6%). The proportion of literature devoted to understanding and reducing disparities was much lower (15.1% and 1.3%, respectively). Black patients were the most negatively impacted racial/ethnic group in the review (63.3%). The Hispanic or Latino ethnic group was the second most negatively impacted (25.1%). The following categories-other outcomes (28.0%), the offering of treatment (21.6%), complications (18.6%), and survival (16.7%)-represented the most frequently measured outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Although strides have been taken to identify racial disparities within neurosurgery, fewer studies have focused on understanding and reducing these disparities. The tremendous rise of literature within this domain but the relative paucity of solutions necessitates the study of targeted interventions to provide equitable care for all patients undergoing neurosurgical treatment.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Restorative Justice (RJ) as a practice and mindset is growing within academic medicine and health care. The authors aim to categorize the extent to which RJ training and practices have been researched, explored, and applied within health care, medicine, and academic contexts. Methods: In July 2021, the authors conducted a scoping literature review, searching four databases for peer-reviewed articles and book chapters discussing RJ. Authors also used bibliography searches and personal knowledge to add relevant work. Reviewers independently screened article titles and abstracts, assessing the full texts of potentially eligible articles with inclusion and exclusion criteria. From each included article, authors extracted the publication year, first author's country of origin, specific screening criteria met, and the depth with which it discussed RJ. Results: From 599 articles screened, 39 articles, and books were included (published 2001-2021). Twenty-five (64%) articles discussed RJ theory with few describing application practices with substantial depth. Ten (26%) articles only referenced the term "restorative justice" and seven (18%) discussed legal applications in health care. Fifty-four percent were from outside the United States. Articles tended to describe RJ uses to address harm and often missed the opportunity to explore RJ's capacity to proactively build community and culture that helps prevent harm. Conclusions: RJ in health care is a rapidly expanding field that offers a framework capable of building stronger communities, authentically preventing and responding to harm, inviting radical inclusion of diverse participants to build shared understanding and culture, and ameliorate some of the most toxic and unproductive hierarchical practices in academics and medicine. Most literature calls to RJ for help to respond to harm, although there are very few well-designed and evaluated implementations. Investment in RJ practices holds significant promise to steer our historically hierarchical, "othering" and imperfect systems to align with values of justice (vs. punishment), equity, diversity, and inclusion.

ABSTRACT

Digital health interventions have shown promise in improving patient outcomes and experiences in various healthcare settings. However, their effectiveness in the context of cardiac surgery remains uncertain. This systematic review aims to evaluate the existing evidence on the use of digital health interventions for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. A comprehensive search of PubMed MEDLINE, Elsevier EMBASE, Elsevier Scopus databases, and ClinicalTrials.gov was conducted to identify relevant studies published up to the present. Studies that examined the effects of digital health interventions, including mobile applications and web-based interventions, on perioperative care and patient outcomes in cardiac surgery were included. The data were extracted and synthesized to provide a comprehensive overview of the findings. The search yielded 15 studies composed of 4041 patients, analyzing the feasibility and implementation of mobile or internet applications for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The studies included the use of mobile applications (ManageMySurgery, SeamlessMD, mHeart, Telediaglog, ExSed, Soulage Tavie, Heart Health application, and Mayo Clinic Health Connection) and web-based interventions (Heartnet and Active Heart). The findings indicated that these digital health interventions were associated with improved patient engagement, satisfaction, and reduced healthcare utilization. Patients reported finding the interventions helpful in their recovery process, and there was evidence of enhanced symptom monitoring and timely intervention. The completion rates of modules varied depending on the phase of care, with higher engagement observed during the acute phase. Interest in using digital health applications was expressed by patients, regardless of age, gender, or complexity of the cardiac defect. The results demonstrated that web-based interventions resulted in improvements in mental health, quality of life, and eHealth literacy. This systematic review highlights the potential benefits of digital health interventions in the context of cardiac surgery. Further research, including randomized controlled trials, is needed to establish the effectiveness, feasibility, and generalizability of digital health interventions in cardiac surgery.
