ABSTRACT

The source of energy for all photoautotrophic organisms is light, which is absorbed by photosynthetic processes and used to transform carbon dioxide and H2O into organic molecules. The majority of UV-B light (280 to 320 nm) is absorbed by stratospheric ozone layer, although some of it does reach at the Earth's surface. Because of the sedentary lifestyle of plants, this form of abiotic stress is unavoidable and can induce growth and even cell death. Ten-day-old calli generated from mature Kirik wheat embryos were subjected to UV-B radiation for 0, 2, 4, and 6 h to examine the function of exogenous α-tocopherol, a lipophilic antioxidant, in wheat tolerance to UV-B radiation stress. The calli were then moved to a callus medium containing α-tocopherol (0, 50, and 100 mg/l) and cultivated there for 20 days after being subjected to UV-B stress. For plant regeneration, embryogenic calli were put on a medium for plant regeneration after 30 days. The findings of this investigation demonstrated that an increase in UV-B exposure period resulted in a substantial drop in the relative growth rate of callus, the rate of embryogenic callus, the rate of responding embryogenic callus, and the number of plants in each explant. On the other hand, with the application of α-tocopherol, all these parameters improved, and the best result was observed in the application of 100 mg/l of α-tocopherol in terms of plant regeneration under UV-B stress.

ABSTRACT

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) systems are preferred as a bridging to transplantation or as a destination therapy in the treatment of end-stage heart failure. LVAD-related complications are seen in different clinical variations with the widespread use of LVADs. Some of these complications are seen as related to outflow graft, such as graft stenosis, graft kinking and graft thrombosis. Outflow graft complications have a direct impact on LVAD flow rate and acutely impair the clinical condition of patients. Treatment modalities include surgical approach, endovascular approach, and medical approach. In this case report, we aim to share a 57-year-old male patient, who had outflow graft stenosis near the anastomosis line between ascending aorta and the left ventricular assist device outflow graft, and the endovascular treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Advanced heart failure studies demonstrate that ischemic factors increase in prevalence with age and are more prominent in men. Ejection fraction (EF) cannot be preserved in these patients, and ischemic cardiomyopathy develops. Non-ischemic factors are more prominent in female heart failure patients, where the EF is preserved. Although an age-associated increase in the rate of heart failure is acknowledged in both sexes, etiologic classifications by sex-based age groups are still lacking. This study examined the etiology of heart failure according to age and sex in ventricular assist device patients. METHODS: The patient population included 457 end-stage heart failure patients who received a continuous flow-left ventricular assist device at Ege University Hospital between 2010 and 2017. Age, sex, and cardiomyopathy etiology data were obtained from the hospital database. The Mann-Whitney U test was applied to test the statistical significance among subgroups (95% CI, P < .05 for statistical significance). RESULTS: The prevalence of ischemic cardiomyopathy was significantly lower in male patients aged 18 to 39 years compared to older patients. Conversely, no difference was seen among female patients. The prevalence of dilated cardiomyopathy was higher in male patients who were 18 to 39 years of age compared to older patients, but no difference was present among the female patients. CONCLUSIONS: Age and heart failure etiology were demonstrated to be interrelated in men but not in women. The fact that etiologic factors of advanced heart failure in women have a wider range than in men makes the current classification systems insufficient for use in female populations.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The left heart bypass is currently the most frequent adjunct to provide distal aortic perfusion during aortic clamping. However, closed-circuits cannot respond to sudden hemodynamic fluctuations during aortic clamping which may lead to complications. In this report, we aim to give the technical aspects of reservoir-added centrifugal pump circuit system, its implementation and the clinical outcomes. METHODS: Between 2002 and 2020, the data of 35 patients underwent aortic aneurysm repair with the use of modified pump circuit were analyzed. The mean age was 53.4 years (range 24-73) and 91.4% of all was male. Preoperative demographics, intraoperative pump data and postoperative clinical outcomes were reported. RESULTS: Thoracoabdominal incision was used in 22 patients (62.9%) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage catheter was placed in 15 patients (42.9%). The left inferior pulmonary vein for outflow and the left femoral artery for inflow cannulation were used preferably. Median duration of pump support was 50 mins (13-121) in the cohort. The median transfusion of red packed cells was 2 units. Renal failure was observed in two patients and permanent paraplegia in one patient. Only one patient died in the elective group (1/34) and one patient in the emergent. CONCLUSIONS: The reservoir-added centrifugal pump is an effective, practical, and flexible perfusion system which should be in the armamentarium of surgeons in order to solve difficult problems during open repair of descending and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, the effects of flaxseed oil on the oxidant-antioxidant system in cadmium intoxication were investigated in rats. Forty-eight male Wistar albino rats were divided into four equal groups (group 1). No treatment was applied to the control group. On the other hand, groups 2, 3, and 4 were administered with 0.1 ml/rat/day (∼500 mg/kg bw) flaxseed oil by gavage into the stomach, 50 ppm of cadmium (∼4 mg/kg bw) in ad libitum drinking water, and 0.1 ml/rat/day flaxseed oil plus 50 ppm of cadmium, respectively, for 30 days. At the end of the study, malondialdehyde and nitric oxide levels and catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase activities were measured in blood and tissue (liver, lung, kidney, brain, heart, and testes) samples. While malondialdehyde and nitric oxide levels increased in the group given cadmium compared to the control group; in the meantime, there were some significant changes in antioxidant enzyme activities. These changes were observed, the trends of decrease or increase compared to the control group. There were positive changes in parameters of the group given with flaxseed oil plus cadmium compared to the group receiving cadmium alone, in other words, values were seen coming close to control group. As a result, cadmium exposure caused oxidative damage to erythrocytes and organs at varying rates, while flaxseed oil reduced the severity of cadmium-induced lipid peroxidation. Therefore, it was concluded that flaxseed oil can be used among compounds as a therapeutic agent or food additive for prophylaxis in cadmium intoxication.
