ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how changes to the 2023-2024 Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application will impact future applicants. We investigate students' perceptions about applying to residency during this transition period. METHODS: An anonymous electronic survey was sent to medical students through social media of a women's surgical society. Questions reflected aspects of the ERAS application. RESULTS: There were 415 responses, with 68 â€‹% planning to apply into surgical specialties (SS) and 17 â€‹% into non-surgical specialties (NSS). Compared with the NSS group, SS students reported decreased confidence in successfully matching, less attainable applicant expectations, and increased personal sacrifices to pursue their residency of interest. Students interested in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) placed 3-times more importance on the number of publications than General Surgery students. Away rotations were rated significantly more important for Otolaryngology, Orthopaedic, and PRS students. CONCLUSION: Students applying into surgical residencies experience unique stressors. Values among SS students differed across surgical subspecialties in preparation for the match. Further investigation characterizing the relationship between these values and characteristics of successful resident applicants is warranted.

ABSTRACT

The combination of extreme miniaturization with a high sensitivity and the potential to be integrated in an array form on a chip has made silicon-based photonic microring resonators a very attractive research topic. As biosensors are approaching the nanoscale, analyte mass transfer and bonding kinetics have been ascribed as crucial factors that limit their performance. One solution may be a system that applies dielectrophoretic forces, in addition to microfluidics, to overcome the diffusion limits of conventional biosensors. Dielectrophoresis, which involves the migration of polarized dielectric particles in a non-uniform alternating electric field, has previously been successfully applied to achieve a 1000-fold improved detection efficiency in nanopore sensing and may significantly increase the sensitivity in microring resonator biosensing. In the current work, we designed microring resonators with integrated electrodes next to the sensor surface that may be used to explore the effect of dielectrophoresis. The chip design, including two different electrode configurations, electric field gradient simulations, and the fabrication process flow of a dielectrohoresis-enhanced microring resonator-based sensor, is presented in this paper. Finite element method (FEM) simulations calculated for both electrode configurations revealed ∇E2 values above 1017 V2m-3 around the sensing areas. This is comparable to electric field gradients previously reported for successful interactions with larger molecules, such as proteins and antibodies.

ABSTRACT

The development of integrated vertical III-V nanowire (NW) stimulated emitters in silicon photonics while achieving an efficient light coupling through vertical III-V NW lasers into horizontal optical silicon waveguides is demanding. This is mainly due to the directionality and contradiction of the simultaneously satisfied low threshold stimulated emission conditions of the vertical NWs and efficient light coupling from the NW emitters into the horizontal silicon waveguide. However, we propose a new, to the best of our knowledge, design by taking advantage of resonating features of ring structures and theoretically demonstrate that an interfacial ring resonator between GaAs NW emitters and the silicon waveguide achieves a coupling efficiency up to about 70% at a given wavelength. We also show that the interfacial resonator enables us to adjust the coupling efficiency from about 10% to over 70%. The adjustable coupling efficiency might also be a solution to compromise between the low threshold stimulated emission of NWs and efficient light coupling for realizing efficient silicon couplers based on integrated III-V NW lasers in silicon photonics. Besides the simple fabrication process compared to counterparts, we believe that the novel structure is promising for future optical on-chip data communication in silicon photonics, and the results are expandable to varying wavelengths and materials.

ABSTRACT

The authors examined immediacy (i.e., discussions about the here-and-now therapeutic relationship) in a 12-session case of individual interpersonal psychotherapy. Therapist immediacy during immediacy events most often focused on parallels between external relationships and the therapy relationship, encouraging expression of immediate feelings, processing termination, therapist expressing disappointment/sadness/hurt and inquiring about the client's reactions. Client involvement was slightly higher before and after than during immediacy events. On the positive side, therapist immediacy seemed to help the client express her immediate feelings about the therapist more openly, feel closer to the therapist, and become less defended. On the negative side, the client felt somewhat awkward and pressured when the therapist used immediacy. Limitations and implications for practice and research are discussed.
