ABSTRACT

This paper illustrates how the size and type of substituent R in the phosphinate group of ferrocenyl bisphosphinic acids can affect conformational possibilities and coordination packing. It also demonstrates that H-phosphinate plays a key role in variational mobility, while Me- or Ph- substituents of the phosphinate group can only lead to 0D complexes or 1D coordination polymer. Overall, this paper provides valuable insights into the design and construction of coordination polymers based on ferrocene-contained linkers. It sheds light on how different reaction conditions and substituents can affect conformational possibilities and coordination packing, which could have significant implications for developing new polymers with unique properties.

ABSTRACT

A coordination polymer has been synthesized using ferrocene-based ligand-bearing phosphinic groups of 1,1'-ferrocene-diyl-bis(H-phosphinic acid)), and samarium (III). The coordination polymer's structure was studied by both single-crystal and powder XRD, TG, IR, and Raman analyses. For the first time, the Mössbauer effect studies were performed on ferrocenyl phosphinate and the polymer based on it. Additionally, the obtained polymer was studied by the method of cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. It is shown that it has the most positive potential known among ferrocenyl phosphinate-based coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks. Using the values of the oxidation potential, the polymer was oxidized and the ESR method verified the oxidized Fe(III) form in the solid state. Additionally, the effect of the size of the phosphorus atom substituent of the phosphinate group on the dimension of the resulting coordination compounds is shown.

ABSTRACT

A new efficient approach to the synthesis of 6-alkenyl substituted pyridoxine derivatives has been developed. A series of 31 novel alkenyl pyridoxine derivatives, stilbene-based bioisosteric analogs of estradiol, were synthesized. In vitro cytotoxicity of the obtained compounds against MCF-7 (ER+) breast cancer tumor cells was studied using the MTT assay. The most active compounds with IC50,MCF-7 < 10 µM were also tested for cytotoxicity in vitro against MDA-MB-231 (ER-) breast adenocarcinoma cells and conditionally normal human skin fibroblasts (HSF). The patterns of structure-antitumor activity relationships of the obtained compounds were analyzed. The most active compounds were found to contain a six-membered ketal ring, a methyl group in position 5, a 3,4-dimethoxystyryl fragment in positions 2 or 6 of the pyridoxine ring, and a trans-configuration of the double bond. Using the most active compound 5a as a representative cytotoxic agent, we have demonstrated that it has high specificity and antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 (ER+) tumor cells (IC50 < 5 µM), and a higher therapeutic index compared to the reference compound raloxifene (48 versus 5.8). Compound 5a decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential and increased the level of reactive oxygen species in MCF-7 cells, but not MDA-MB-231 cells. Compound 5a did not affect the distribution of cell cycle phases and induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, but not MDA-MB-231. Unlike compound 5a, raloxifene decreased mitochondrial potential, increased the ROS level, and induced apoptosis in both MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, which indicated a lack of selectivity for cells with estrogen receptor expression. It was also shown that compound 5a reduced the level of ERα expression in cells to a lesser extent than raloxifene and, unlike the latter, did not activate the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

A new family of sterically hindered alkyl(tri-tert-butyl) phosphonium salts (n-CnH2n+1 with n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20) was synthesized and evaluated as stabilizers for the formation of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs), and the prepared PdNPs, stabilized by a series of phosphonium salts, were applied as catalysts of the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. All investigated phosphonium salts were found to be excellent stabilizers of metal nanoparticles of small catalytically active size with a narrow size distribution. In addition, palladium nanoparticles exhibited exceptional stability: the presence of phosphonium salts prevented agglomeration and precipitation during the catalytic reaction.

ABSTRACT

The reaction between aryl substituted sodium 1,2,3-triphospholides or disodium bis(1,2,3-triphospholide) and [Fe(η6-(C6H5CH3)Cp]+[PF6]- in boiling diglyme results in pure 1,2,3-triphosphaferrocenes 1-3 or bis(1,2,3-triphosphaferrocene) 4, respectively, in good yields. The structure of all obtained 1,2,3-triphosphaferrocenes 1-4 has been extensively studied experimentally (NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and X-ray analysis for 1 and 4) and quantum chemically. The electrochemical properties of 1,2,3-triphosphaferrocenes 1-4 in the solid state were studied for the first time and a reversible one-electron oxidation (E1/2 = 0.52-0.92 V vs. Fc+/Fc) was demonstrated for 1, 3, and 4. In the case of 1,4-bis(5-phenyl-4-(1,2,3-triphospaferrocenyl))benzene 4, consecutive oxidation in the solid state is observed in contrast to other 1,2,3-triphosphaferrocenes 1-3. According to the ESR data, the g-factor of the oxidized bis(1,2,3-triphosphaferrocene), 4 (g = 2.12) is different from the g-factors of oxidized 1,2,3-triphosphaferrocenes 1-3 (g = 2.01). This is the first example of multi(ferrocenyl) systems based on the phosphaferrocene motif, which in turn opens up a new fundamental platform for the preparation of compounds with stimuli-responsive properties.

ABSTRACT

New nickel-based complexes of 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (dpp-bian) with BF4 - counterion or halide co-ligands were synthesized in THF and MeCN. The nickel(I) complexes were obtained by using two approaches: 1) electrochemical reduction of the corresponding nickel(II) precursors; and 2) a chemical comproportionation reaction. The structural features and redox properties of these complexes were investigated by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The influence of temperature and solvent on the structure of the nickel(I) complexes was studied in detail, and an uncommon reversible solvent-induced monomer/dimer transformation was observed. In the case of the fluoride complex, the unpaired electron was found to be localized on the dpp-bian ligand, whereas all of the other nickel complexes contained neutral dpp-bian moieties.

ABSTRACT

Two series of novel pyridoxine-based azaheterocyclic analogs of feruloyl methane (Dehydrozingerone, DZG) were synthesized, and their biological activity against a panel of tumor and normal cell lines was evaluated in vitro. The most active compounds possessed expressed cytotoxic activity, which was comparable to cytotoxic activity of doxorubicin and significantly higher than that of DZG, and a remarkable selectivity for the studied cancer cell lines as compared to the normal cells. The leading compound and DZG initiated arrest of the cell cycle in the G2/M phase, preventing normal division and further transition of daughter cells to the G0/G1 phase. Similar to DZG, but with higher efficiency, the leading compound was able to inhibit migration activity and, therefore, invasiveness of tumor cells. It also increased concentration of reactive oxygen species in tumor cells, induced depolarization of mitochondrial membranes and initiated apoptosis accompanied by disruption of integrity of cytoplasmic cell membranes. By contrast to DZG, the leading compound did not possess antioxidant properties. The obtained data make the described chemotype a promising starting point for the development of new anticancer agents.

ABSTRACT

Crystals of four new copper(II) complexes have been grown from copper(II) acetate/chloride-1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium acetate/chloride-water systems and characterized by X-ray analysis. The first complex, bis-(1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium) tetra-µ-acetato-bis[chloridocuprate(II)], [Emim]2[Cu2(C2H3O2)4Cl2] (1) (Emim is 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium, C6H11N2), contains [Cu2(C2H3O2)4Cl2]2- coordination anions with a paddle-wheel structure and ionic liquid cations. Two of the synthesized complexes are one-dimensional polymers, namely catena-poly[1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium [[tetra-µ-acetato-dicuprate(II)]-µ-chlorido] monohydrate], {[Emim][Cu2(C2H3O2)4Cl]·H2O} n (2), and catena-poly[1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium [[tetra-µ-acetato-dicuprate(II)]-µ-acetato]], {[Emim][Cu2(C2H3O2)5]} n (3). In these compounds, the Cu2(C2H3O2)4 units with a paddle-wheel structure are connected to each other through chloride (in 2) or acetate (in 3) anions to form parallel chains, between which cations of ionic liquid are situated. The last compound, bis-(1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium) tetra-µ-acetato-bis[aquacopper(II)] tetra-µ-acetato-bis[acetatocuprate(II)] dihydrate, [Emim]2[Cu2(C2H3O2)4(H2O)2][Cu2(C2H3O2)6]·2H2O (4), contains two different binuclear coordination units (neutral and anionic), connected through hydrogen bonds between water mol-ecules and acetate ions.

ABSTRACT

A new surfactant-copper(ii) complex [Cu(L)Br3] (where LBr is 1-cetyl-4-aza-1-azoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane bromide) containing a transition metal in the head group has been synthesized and characterized. Physicochemical properties, thermal stability and 3D structure were determined using X-ray diffractometry, UV-vis spectroscopy, simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry combined with mass-spectrometry of evolved vapors. The study of the self-assembly and morphological features of associated structures was performed by potentiometry using a bromide ion selective electrode and fluorescence of pyrene and 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene. The influence of the metal ion embedded into the surfactant structure on critical micelle concentration, degree of counterion binding, aggregation numbers and morphology of the associates was elucidated. High solubilizing capacity and complexation ability of the metal containing micelles with respect to Orange-OT hydrophobic dye and oligonucleotide were determined. Importantly, the functional properties of this metallosurfactant complex are much better compared to those of classical cationic surfactants bearing cyclic and acyclic head groups, LBr and the LBr-CuBr2 mixture. The new cationic metallosurfactant could be recommended for investigation in gene therapy.

ABSTRACT

Late stage diversification of calix[4]arenes and thiacalix[4]arenes with heterocycles remains a significant synthetic challenge and hampers further exploitation of the scaffolds. Here we describe the development of a short and facile synthetic route to conformationally diverse novel calix[4]arene and thiacalix[4]arene ynones using a palladium cross coupling approach (5% Pd(ii) + 10% Cu(i)) with benzoyl chloride. Their successful conversion to heterocycles to afford pyrazoles was demonstrated through treatment with hydrazine. Functionalisation is calixarene conformation and linker independent enabling access to a library of structures.

ABSTRACT

The interplay of NMR experiments and DFT calculations of NMR parameters is a reliable method for determining the relative configurations of pentacoordinate chiral spirophosphoranes bearing two six- or five-membered rings at the phosphorus atom in solution. The major product of the Betti based derivatives corresponds to the isomers with both substituents at chiral carbons being opposite to the P-H proton. The next populated product corresponds to the isomer with different chiralities at carbons. The least populated isomer is one with both substituents being at the same side of the heterocycle as the P-H bond.

ABSTRACT

A series of diverse binuclear and mononuclear cyclometalated palladium(ii) complexes of different structure was investigated by electrochemical techniques combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The studies including cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry, X-ray structure analysis and quantum chemical calculations revealed a regularity of the complexes oxidation potential on the metal-metal distance in the complexes: the larger Pd-Pd distance, the higher oxidation potentials. The reduction potentials feature unusually high negative values while no correlation depending on the structure could be observed. These results are in a good agreement with the electron density distribution in the complexes. Additionally, ESR data obtained for the complexes upon oxidation is reported.

ABSTRACT

The set of complexes bis-(µ:η(1),η(1)-3,4,5-triaryl-1,2-diphosphacyclopentadienyl)-bis-(tetracarbonyl manganese(i)) (aryl = C6H5 (), p-FC6H4 (), p-ClC6H4 ()) undergo an irreversible rearrangement to mononuclear 3,4,5-triaryl-1,2-diphosphacymantrenes (). According to quantum-chemical calculations binuclear complexes can be considered to be products of kinetic control and mononuclear species are thermodynamically favorable compounds. The antiferromagnetic intramolecular interaction observed for complexes can be effectively tuned by using substituents in the para-position of the arene ring, whereas mononuclear 1,2-diphosphacymantrenes are diamagnetic.

ABSTRACT

A systematic study of the aggregation behavior of alkyltriphenylphosphonium bromides (TPPB-n; n=8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18; here n is the number of carbon atoms in alkyl groups) in aqueous solutions has been carried out and compared with trimethyl ammonium bromides (TMAB-n). Critical micelle concentrations (cmcs) of TPPB-n and TMAB-n decrease with the number of carbon atoms with the slope parameter of ca.0.3. The low cmcs and effective solubilization power toward Orange OT indicate high micellization capacity of phosphonium surfactants. The low counterion binding parameter ß is revealed for TPPB-10 and TPPB-12, while high counterion binding of ≥80% is observed for high TPPB-n homologs. Values of the surface potential ψ calculated on the basis of pK(a) shifts of p-nitrophenols is similar for both series and monotonously increase with alkyl chain length. Several points indicate non-monotonic changes within TPPB-n series. There are peculiarities of the tensiometry and solubilization plots for high homologs and above mentioned increases in counterion binding on transiting from low to high molecular weight surfactants. Differences in aggregation behavior between TPPB and TMAB series and between low and high homologs can be due to the specific structural character of the TPP(+) cation, which is supported by X-ray data.

ABSTRACT

A new diastereoselective synthesis of alpha-aminophosphonates has been developed, based on the reaction, in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid, of trialkyl phosphites with chiral imines derived from (R)- or (S)-1-(alpha-aminobenzyl)-2-naphthol. The reaction proceeds at room temperature in toluene with high diastereoselectivity. The major diastereomer can be separated by crystallization from an appropriate solvent. The relative configuration of both chiral centers of the major diastereomer was determined by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. The desired alpha-aminophosphonic acids can be obtained in enantiopure form by treatment of the corresponding diastereomers with HCl.
