ABSTRACT

Isolated polynuclear binary heterocyclic compounds containing thiazole building block combined with benzofuran, pyrrole, thiazole, or thiophene via carboxamide and/or secondary amine as a junction are presented. The synthetic strategy of those is based on utilization of 2-chloroacetamido-4-phenylthiazole in the synthesis of binary heterocyclic compounds by cyclocondensation with salicylic aldehyde, acetonitrile derivatives, ammonium thiocyanate, 3-mercaptoacrylonitrile derivatives, and/or 3-mercaptoacrylate derivatives. The prepared binary thiazole-based heterocycles have been studied as protease (Mpro) inhibitors by molecular docking for visualization of their orientation and interactions with COVID-19 units using hydroxychloroquine as a reference molecule.

ABSTRACT

A new member of the family Closteroviridae was detected in Actinidia chinensis grown in Italy, using next generation sequencing of double-stranded RNA. The virus isolate, named Actinidia virus 1 (AcV-1) has a genome of 18,848 nts in length, a structure similar to the unclassified persimmon virus B (PeVB) and contains 12 open reading frames (ORFs) greater than 6 KDa, one carrying two papain-like leader proteases, a methyltransferase, a helicase and an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase domain. Additional ORFs code for homologs of heat shock protein 70, heat shock protein 90 and a coat protein. Curiously, AcV-1 and PeVB genomes code for a thaumatin-like protein, a peculiarity unreported for other viruses. In phylogenetic analyses both viruses group in a distinct clade evolutionarily related to closteroviruses. The final taxonomic position of AcV-1 within the family Closteroviridae is yet to be clarified.

ABSTRACT

Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) has been applied in many different medical applications. Due to the complexities and the diversities of this domain, most medical CBR systems become hybrid. Besides, the case adaptation process in CBR is often a challenging issue as it is traditionally carried out manually by domain experts. In this paper, a new hybrid case-based reasoning approach for medical diagnosis systems is proposed to improve the accuracy of the retrieval-only CBR systems. The approach integrates case-based reasoning and rule-based reasoning, and also applies the adaptation process automatically by exploiting adaptation rules. Both adaptation rules and reasoning rules are generated from the case-base. After solving a new case, the case-base is expanded, and both adaptation and reasoning rules are updated. To evaluate the proposed approach, a prototype was implemented and experimented to diagnose breast cancer and thyroid diseases. The final results show that the proposed approach increases the diagnosing accuracy of the retrieval-only CBR systems, and provides a reliable accuracy comparing to the current breast cancer and thyroid diagnosis systems.

ABSTRACT

Reaction of hydrazonoyl halides with 6-(benzylidenamino)-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrimidin-4-one and 2,3-diaminoquinazolin-4-one site-selectively afforded 3-substituted-7-(benzylidenamino)-1-phenyl-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]-pyrimidin-5(1H)-ones, [1,2,4,5]tetrazino[6,1-b]quinazolin-6(4H)-one, and 3-methyl-2-(4-substituted-phenylhydrazo)-[1,2,4]triazino[3,2-b]quinazolin-10-ones in good yields. The structures of the newly synthesized compounds were elucidated by chemical evidence and their IR, 1H, 13C NMR, and MS spectra. Furthermore, some of the products were screened against different strains of bacteria and fungi.

ABSTRACT

A simple, selective and sensitive procedure is described for the preconcentration by flotation followed by spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of Cd(II). Cadmium forms an intense red 1:2 complex with phenanthraquinone monophenylthiosemicarbazone (PPT) at pH > or = 6. The colored Cd-PPT complex was floated quantitatively with oleic acid (HOL) surfactant at pH 6.5, exhibiting maximum absorbance at 520 nm and having a molar absorptivity of 2.4 x 10(5) L mol(-1) cm(-1). The stability constant of the formed complex is 1.5 x 10(12); log K = 12.2. Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration range 0.01-0.34 mg/L. The Sandell sensitivity and relative standard deviation are 0.4 ng/cm2 and 2.6%, respectively. The results obtained spectrophotometrically were compared to those obtained by AAS analysis. The analytical parameters affecting flotation and hence determination have been thoroughly investigated. The proposed procedure was successfully applied to the determination of Cd(II) traces in certified and real human hair samples as well as in natural waters. The structure of the complex formed and the mechanism of flotation were proposed.

ABSTRACT

Copper(II) forms 1:1 and 1:2 intense red complexes with phenanthraquinone monophenylthiosemicarbazone (PPT) at pH 3-3.5 and > or =6.5, respectively. These complexes exhibit maximal absorbance at 545 and 517 nm, the molar absorptivity being 2.3 x 10(4) and 4.8 x 10(4) l mol(-1) cm(-1), respectively. However, the 1:1 complex was quantitatively floated with oleic acid (HOL) surfactant in the pH range 4.5-5.5, providing a highly selective and sensitive procedure for the spectrophotometric determination of CuII. The molar absorptivity of the floated Cu-PPT complex was 1.5 x 10(5) l mol)(-1) cm(-1). Beer's law was obeyed over the range 3-400 ppb at 545 nm. The analytical parameters affecting the flotation process and hence the determination of copper traces were reported. Also, the structure of the isolated solid complex and the mechanism of flotation were suggested. Moreover, the procedure was successfully applied to the analysis of CuII in natural waters, serum blood and some drug samples.

ABSTRACT

Complexes of several transition metal ions with alpha-oximinoacetoacetyl pyridine-4-phenylthiosemicarbazone (H3OAPT) have been prepared. Attempts were made to elucidate their geometries by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic measurements and by some spectroscopic (IR, ESR and electronic) techniques. All the investigated metal ions form mononuclear complexes except for CuII, which forms mononuclear and trinuclear complexes with its chloride and acetate salts, respectively. The IR spectra show that the ligand behaves as a mono or binegative tridentate. Moreover, it acts as a trinegative hexadentate in the trinuclear CuII complex. The protonation constants (logK1H = 9.9 and log K2H = 6.0), as well as the stability constants of the metal complexes, are determined by the pH-titration of H3OAPT and its metal(II) complexes against 0.01 M NaOH. CuII complexes possess square-planar stereochemistry while CoII and NiII have an octahedral one. The crystal field parameters of CoII and NiII complexes are evaluated.

ABSTRACT

The ternary purple coloured complex formed between Th(4+), bromocresol orange (BCO) and cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) in acidic medium was investigated spectrophotometrically. Results obtained revealed the formation of 1:1:1, Th:BCO:CPB complex in aqueous solution at pH approximately 0.5 with a logarithmic conditional stability constant of 12.04+/-0.1, I=0.1 at 25 degrees C. The colour of the ternary complex was used for the determination of thorium(IV) in the range of 0.02-2.6 mug ml(-1) Th(4+), =9.2x10(4) l mol(-1) cm(-1) at 560 nm. Beside its high sensitivity, the reaction was also proved to be highly selective for Th(4+). Thorium(IV) was determined in presence of great number of transition metal ions, rare earths and different anions. Th(4+) was also determined with high accuracy and precision by its titration with disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Na(2)EDTA) using BCO as an indicator at pH approximately 0.5. The endpoint was detected either visually or spectrophotometrically (lambda=550 nm). The proposed procedures were successfully applied for the determination of Th(4+) in standard Th-U ores and in a series of naturally occurring ores or minerals containing thorium. A spectrophotometric method was also described for the determination of fluoride ion, which was based upon the decrease in colour intensity of the Th-BCO complex on mixing it with F(-) ion. The proposed method was convenient, rapid and sensitive for fluoride. It could be used for the determination of fluoride ion in the 0.02-3.00 mug ml(-1) range (S.D.+/-0.9%). The proposed method was successfully applied for direct determination of F(-) ion in water obtained from different origins and the results were satisfactory.

ABSTRACT

A rapid and simple general complexometric method was presented for the determination of lead, cadmium and thallium or mercury or arsenic(V) in laboratory synthesized mixtures similar to those of some ores, minerals and alloys of such metals. The precision and accuracy attainable in successive titrations of Pb(2+), Cd(2+) and Tl(3+) or Hg(2+) or AsO(3-)(4) (As(5+)) with 0.05 and/or 0.01 mol 1(-1) solutions of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Na(2)EDTA) and standard Pb(NO(3))(2) of the same concentration using Bromo-Cresol Orange (BCO) as a new metallochromic indicator with visual endpoint indication were studied. For the analysis of a three component mixtures of the aforementioned ions, Tl(3+) was at first directly titrated with Na(2)EDTA at pH 0.5-1 (HNO(3)) using BCO as indicator. At the thallium endpoint an excess of Na(2)EDTA was added and the pH was adjusted at pH approximately 4.8 using hexamine-HNO(3) buffer (solution A). The excess EDTA was back-titrated with standard solution of Pb(NO(3))(2). 1,10-Phenanthroline (1,10-phen) was added to release the EDTA combined with Cd(2+), while thiosemicarbazide (TSC) was used to liberate the EDTA from the mercury-EDTA chelate. To determine AsO(3-)(4) ion in such type of mixtures the pH of (solution A) was raised to a value of 10 using ammonia buffer. Excess standard Mg(2+) solution was added and the formed precipitate of MgNH(4)AsO(4) was separated, dissolved and its magnesium content equivalent to AsO(3-)(4) was determined complexometrically using Eriochrome Black-T (EBT) indicator. The interference caused by different anions, cations and organic acids was investigated. A comparison of the indicators BCO and Xylenol Orange (XO) for successive titration of the studied metal ions was carried out. The proposed successive titration method was applied successfully to some real samples of ores, minerals and alloys of the studied metal ions and the results were satisfactory and agreed with those obtained by AAS.
