ABSTRACT

When spins are arranged in a lattice of triangular motif, the phenomenon of frustration leads to numerous energetically equivalent ground states, and results in exotic states such as spin liquid and spin ice. Here we report an alternative situation: a system, classically a liquid, freezes in the clean limit into a glassy state induced by quantum fluctuations. We call such glassy state a spin jam. The case in point is a frustrated magnet, where spins are arranged in a triangular network of bipyramids. Quantum corrections break the classical degeneracy into a set of aperiodic spin configurations forming local minima in a rugged energy landscape. This is established by mapping the problem into tiling with hexagonal tiles. The number of tessellations scales with the boundary length rather than its volume, showing the absence of local zero-energy modes. Low-temperature thermodynamics is discussed to compare it with other glassy materials.

ABSTRACT

A population of CD133(+)Lin(-)CD45(-) very small embryonic/epiblast-like stem cells (VSELs) has been purified by multiparameter sorting from umbilical cord blood (UCB). To speed up isolation of these cells, we employed anti-CD133-conjugated paramagnetic beads followed by staining with Aldefluor to detect aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity; we subsequently sorted CD45(-)/GlyA(-)/CD133(+)/ALDH(high) and CD45(-)/GlyA(-)/CD133(+)/ALDH(low) cells, which are enriched for VSELs, and CD45(+)/GlyA /CD133(+)/ALDH(high) and CD45(+)/GlyA(-)/CD133(+)/ALDH(low) cells, which are enriched for hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). Although freshly isolated CD45(-) VSELs did not grow hematopoietic colonies, the same cells, when activated/expanded over OP9 stromal support, acquired hematopoietic potential and grew colonies composed of CD45(+) hematopoietic cells in methylcellulose cultures. We also observed that CD45(-)/GlyA(-)/CD133(+)/ALDH(high) VSELs grew colonies earlier than CD45(-)/GlyA(-)/CD133(+)/ALDH(low) VSELs, which suggests that the latter cells need more time to acquire hematopoietic commitment. In support of this possibility, real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis confirmed that, whereas freshly isolated CD45(-)/GlyA(-)/CD133(+)/ALDH(high) VSELs express more hematopoietic transcripts (for example, c-myb), CD45(-)/GlyA(-)/CD133(+)/ALDH(low) VSELs exhibit higher levels of pluripotent stem cell markers (for example, Oct-4). More importantly, hematopoietic cells derived from VSELs that were co-cultured over OP9 support were able to establish human lympho-hematopoietic chimerism in lethally irradiated non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficiency mice 4-6 weeks after transplantation. Overall, our data suggest that UCB-VSELs correspond to the most primitive population of HSPCs in UCB.

ABSTRACT

We postulated that Oct4(+)SSEA-1(+)Sca-1(+)Lin(-)CD45(-) very small embryonic-like stem cells (VSELs) isolated from adult bone marrow (BM) could be a reserve population for tissue-committed stem cells. The aim of this study was to elucidate the developmental origin of these cells. We report that during embryogenesis, VSELs are enriched in embryonic day (E)12.5 murine fetal livers (FLs) and subsequently follow the developmental route of hematopoietic stem cells (H)SCs to colonize BM. Molecular analysis of purified VSELs revealed that both FL-derived VSELs and their adult BM-derived counterparts express: (i) several epiblast/primordial germ cell (PGC) markers; (ii) migrating PGC-like epigenetic reprogramming profiles of Oct4, Nanog and Stella loci; as well as (iii) a unique pattern of genomic imprinting. Thus, these data suggest that VSELs may originate from epiblast/migrating PGC-like cells and, in spite of the expression of pluripotent stem cell markers, changes in the epigenetic signature of imprinted genes keep these cells quiescent in adult tissues and prevent them from teratoma formation.

ABSTRACT

We study the survival of supercurrents in a system of impenetrable bosons on a lattice, subject to a quantum quench from its critical superfluid phase to an insulating phase. We show that the evolution of the current when the quench follows a Rosen-Zener profile is exactly solvable. This allows us to analyze a quench of arbitrary rate, from a sudden destruction of the superfluid to a slow opening of a gap. The decay and oscillations of the current are analytically derived and studied numerically along with the momentum distribution after the quench. In the case of small supercurrent boosts nu, we find that the current surviving at long times is proportional to nu3.

ABSTRACT

A strategy is proposed to excite particles from a Fermi sea in a noise-free fashion by electromagnetic pulses with realistic parameters. We show that by using quantized pulses of simple form one can suppress the particle-hole pairs which are created by a generic excitation. The resulting many-body states are characterized by one or several particles excited above the Fermi surface accompanied by no disturbance below it. These excitations carry charge which is integer for noninteracting electron gas and fractional for Luttinger liquid. The operator algebra describing these excitations is derived, and a method of their detection which relies on noise measurement is proposed.

ABSTRACT

We discuss repulsive Casimir forces between dielectric materials with nontrivial magnetic susceptibility. It is shown that considerations based on the naive pairwise summation of van der Waals and Casimir-Polder forces may not only give an incorrect estimate of the magnitude of the total Casimir force but even the wrong sign of the force when materials with high dielectric and magnetic responses are involved. Indeed repulsive Casimir forces may be found in a large range of parameters, and we suggest that the effect may be realized in known materials. The phenomenon of repulsive Casimir forces may be of importance both for experimental study and for nanomachinery applications.

ABSTRACT

Electron microscopic techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron probe microanalyses (EPMA), were used to evaluate metal species and mineralogical phases associated with metal-bearing contaminated soil and industrial wastes that have been solidified and stabilized with Portland cement. Metals present in the wastes included arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc. In addition, mineral alterations and weathering features that affect the durability and containment of metals in aged remediated wastes were analyzed microscopically. Physical and chemical alteration processes identified included: freeze-thaw cracking; cracking caused by the formation of expansive minerals, such as ettringite and thaumasite; carbonation; and the movement of metals from waste aggregates into the surrounding cement matrix. Preliminary results show that although the extent of degradation after 6 years is considered slight to moderate, evaluations of durability and permanence of metals containment cannot be based on leaching and bulk chemistry analyses alone. The use of electron microscopic analyses is vital in studies that evaluate trace metal and mineral species and that attempt to predict the long-term performance of metal containment in solidified and stabilized wastes.
