ABSTRACT

This article is meant to serve as a reference for radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and other physicians to enhance their understanding of progressive collapsing foot deformity, also known as adult acquired flat foot deformity. Pathophysiology, imaging findings, especially on MRI and 3-dimensional MRI are discussed with relevant illustrations so that the readers can apply these principles in their practice for better patient managements.

ABSTRACT

Common hip internal derangements include femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH) dysplasia, and avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head. These are initially screened by radiographs. For preoperative planning of hip preservation, 3-dimensional (3D) CT is commonly performed to assess bony anatomy and its alterations. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to evaluate labrum, hyaline cartilage, tendons, synovium, and loose bodies, and provides vital information for surgical decision-making. However, conventional 2D MRI techniques are limited by lack of isotropic multiplanar reconstructions and partial volume artifacts. With advancements in hardware and software, novel isotropic 3D MR Proton Density images are acquired with acceptable acquisition times leading to improved visualization of soft tissue and osseous structures for various hip conditions. Three-Dimensional MRI allows multiplanar non-gap reconstructions along the structures of interest. It results in detection of small, otherwise inconspicuous labral tears without the need for MR arthrogram, which can be subsequently measured. In addition, radial reconstructions of the femoral head can be performed from original 3D volume MR imaging and CT imaging without the need for individual different plane acquisitions. Three-Dimensional MRI thus impacts surgical decision-making for the important common hip derangement conditions. For example, femoral head hyaline cartilage loss may make hip preservation difficult or impossible. In this review, we discuss the advantages and technical details of 3D CT and MRI and their significant role in aiding hip preservation surgery for common hip conditions. The conditions discussed in this article include FAI, DDH, AVN, synovial disorders, cartilaginous tumors, and hip fractures.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study investigates the quality of systematic review abstracts through evaluation of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) abstract guideline adherence, Assessment for Multiple Systematic Reviews Tool (AMSTAR) quality rating, spin, abstract word count, and abstract structure. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and the CEV@US database for articles related to pediatric strabismus. Inclusion criteria regarding pediatric strabismus studies were required to be in English, systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses, and patients less than eighteen years of age. From the search records, two investigators independently screened titles and abstracts to locate eligible reviews and extract study characteristics using AMSTAR-2 and pilot-tested Google forms. RESULTS: Searches retrieved 545 studies, of which 14 were eligible for data extraction. We found one form of spin in 1 abstract (of 14, 7.14%) of our included studies. 11/13 (84.62%) of studies failed to mention risk of bias assessment. There was no significant association between abstract characteristics and quality of the study. We found a significant correlation between AMSTAR-2 rating and PRISMA completion. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, a positive finding was that no spin was found within the abstracts of articles for pediatric strabismus therapies. PRISMA-A adherence was strongly associated with higher quality studies and should be considered for all systematic reviews in ophthalmology. Clinical research of pediatric strabismus is significantly limited in the number of studies present, as evidenced by our data. To improve the quality of abstract reporting, efforts from authors and journals are needed.

OBJECTIVE. Although extensive attention has been focused on the enormous potential of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, a major question remains: how should this fundamentally new technology be regulated? The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the pathways developed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to regulate the incorporation of AI in medical imaging. CONCLUSION. AI is the new wave of innovation in health care. The technology holds promising applications to revolutionize all aspects of medicine.
