ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the clinical usefulness of thin-slice echo-planar imaging (EPI)-based diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with an on-console distortion correction technique, termed reverse encoding distortion correction DWI (RDC-DWI), in patients with non-functioning pituitary neuroendocrine tumor (PitNET)/pituitary adenoma. METHODS: Patients with non-functioning PitNET/pituitary adenoma who underwent 3-T RDC-DWI between December 2021 and September 2022 were retrospectively enrolled. Image quality was compared among RDC-DWI, DWI with correction for distortion induced by B0 inhomogeneity alone (B0-corrected-DWI), and original EPI-based DWI with anterior-posterior phase-encoding direction (AP-DWI). Susceptibility artifact, anatomical visualization of cranial nerves, overall tumor visualization, and visualization of cavernous sinus invasion were assessed qualitatively. Quantitative assessment of geometric distortion was performed by evaluation of anterior and posterior displacement between each DWI and the corresponding three-dimensional T2-weighted imaging. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and apparent diffusion coefficient values were measured. RESULTS: Sixty-four patients (age 70.8 ± 9.9 years [mean ± standard deviation]; 33 females) with non-functioning PitNET/pituitary adenoma were evaluated. In terms of susceptibility artifacts in the frontal and temporal lobes, visualization of left trigeminal nerve, overall tumor visualization, and anterior displacement, RDC-DWI performed the best and B0-corrected-DWI performed better than AP-DWI. The right oculomotor and right trigeminal nerves were better visualized by RDC-DWI than by B0-corrected-DWI and AP-DWI. Visualization of cavernous sinus invasion and posterior displacement were better by RDC-DWI and B0-corrected-DWI than by AP-DWI. SNR and CNR were the highest for RDC-DWI. CONCLUSIONS: RDC-DWI achieved excellent image quality regarding susceptibility artifact, geometric distortion, and tumor visualization in patients with non-functioning PitNET/pituitary adenoma. RELEVANCE STATEMENT: RDC-DWI facilitates excellent visualization of the pituitary region and surrounding normal structures, and its on-console distortion correction technique is convenient. RDC-DWI can clearly depict cavernous sinus invasion of PitNET/pituitary adenoma even without contrast medium. KEY POINTS: • RDC-DWI is an EPI-based DWI technique with a novel on-console distortion correction technique. • RDC-DWI corrects distortion due to B0 field inhomogeneity and eddy current. • We evaluated the usefulness of thin-slice RDC-DWI in non-functioning PitNET/pituitary adenoma. • RDC-DWI exhibited excellent visualization in the pituitary region and surrounding structures. • In addition, the on-console distortion correction of RDC-DWI is clinically convenient.

ABSTRACT

To safely recycle spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), their deactivation as a pretreatment is essential. However, the conventional deactivation methods, mainly inducing an external short circuit, cannot be applied to LIBs with disconnected electrical circuits or Li deposited, despite their safety risk. Here, we propose a deactivation method using redox shuttles (RSs). The addition of an RS with redox potentials located between the two electrode potentials into a LIB electrochemically induces an internal short circuit with or without disconnected electrical circuits. A fully charged LIB discharges to approximately 0 V when a deactivation agent containing ferrocene or phenothiazine as an RS is added. Moreover, we demonstrate that RSs introduced into LIB can simultaneously dissolve Li deposited on the negative electrode surface and return it to the positive electrode as mobile ions. These characteristics of our method contribute to the improvement in safety and collection rate of Li in the recycling processes, promoting the sustainability of LIBs.

ABSTRACT

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become essential components that power most current technologies, such as smartphones and electric vehicles, thus making various safety evaluations necessary to ensure their safe use. Among these evaluations, heating tests remain the most prominent source of safety issues. However, information on the phenomena occurring inside batteries during heating has remained inaccessible. In this study, we demonstrate the first in situ neutron imaging method to observe the internal structural deformation of LIBs during heating. We developed an airtight aluminium chamber specially designed to prevent radioactive contamination during in situ neutron imaging. We successfully observed the liquid electrolyte fluctuation inside a battery sample and the deformation of the protective plastic film upon heating up to thermal runaway. Hence, this work provides the foundation for future investigations of the internal changes induced in batteries during heating tests and experiments.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare image distortion and reproducibility of quantitative values between reverse encoding distortion correction (RDC) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and conventional DWI techniques in a phantom study and in healthy volunteers. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted with the approval of our institutional review board. Written informed consent was obtained from each participant. RDC-DWIs were created from images obtained at 3T in three orthogonal directions in a phantom and in 10 participants (mean age, 70.9 years; age range, 63-83 years). Images without distortion correction (noDC-DWI) and those corrected with B0 (B0c-DWI) were also created. To evaluate distortion, coefficients of variation were calculated for each voxel and ROIs were placed at four levels of the brain. To evaluate the reproducibility of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurements, intra- and inter-scan variability (%CVADC) were calculated from repeated scans of the phantom. Analysis was performed using Wilcoxon signed-rank test with Bonferroni correction, and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In the phantom, distortion was less in RDC-DWI than in B0c-DWI (P < 0.006), and was less in B0c-DWI than in noDC-DWI (P < 0.006). Intra-scan %CVADC was within 1.30%, and inter-scan %CVADC was within 2.99%. In the volunteers, distortion was less in RDC-DWI than in B0c-DWI in three of four locations (P < 0.006), and was less in B0c-DWI than in noDC-DWI (P < 0.006). At the middle cerebellar peduncle, distortion was less in RDC-DWI than in noDC-DWI (P < 0.006), and was less in noDC-DWI than in B0c-DWI (P < 0.0177). CONCLUSION: In both the phantom and in volunteers, distortion was the least in RDC-DWI than in B0c-DWI and noDC-DWI.

ABSTRACT

A nondestructive detection method for internal Li-metal plating in lithium-ion batteries is essential to improve their lifetime. Here, we demonstrate a direct Li-metal detection technology that focuses on electromagnetic behaviour. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining the ionic behaviour of electrochemical reactions at the negative electrode and the electromagnetic behaviour of electrons based on Maxwell's equations, we find that internal Li-metal plating can be detected by the decrease in real part of the impedance at high-frequency. This finding enables simpler diagnostics when compared to data-driven analysis because we can correlate a direct response from the electronic behaviour to the metallic material property rather changes in the ionic behaviour. We test this response using commercial Li-ion batteries subject to extremely fast charging conditions to induce Li-metal plating. From this, we develop a battery sensor that detects and monitors the cycle-by-cycle growth of Li-metal plating. This work not only contributes to advancing future Li-ion battery development but may also serve as a tool for Li-metal plating monitoring in real-field applications to increase the useable lifetime of Li-ion batteries and to prevent detrimental Li-metal plating.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIM: Ramucirumab plus paclitaxel has been widely used as a second-line chemotherapy for treating advanced gastric cancer. However, the real-world data of this regimen for older patients with gastric cancer (GC) remains unrevealed. The aim of this study was to clarify the feasibility and efficacy of this regimen for older patients with GC in a single-arm, phase II study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients aged ≥70 years having unresectable or recurrent GC who met the eligible criteria were enrolled. Paclitaxel was administered at a dose of 80 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, and 15, and ramucirumab was administered at a dose of 8 mg/kg on day 1 and day 15 of a 4-week cycle. Primary endpoint was the incidence of adverse events and secondary endpoints were response rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival. A total of 25 patients were enrolled in the full-set analysis. RESULTS: Grade 3 or more adverse events were observed in 21 patients (84.0%). Neutropenia was most frequently observed (68.0%), followed by peripheral sensory neuropathy (12.0%), and febrile neutropenia (12.0%). Median progression-free survival and overall survival were 6.9 months and 13.4 months, respectively. Disease control rate was 88.0%, and response rate of patients with measurable lesions was 52.9%. Notably, no treatment-related deaths occurred. CONCLUSION: Ramucirumab plus paclitaxel as a second-line chemotherapy demonstrated acceptable oncological outcomes, despite the occurrence of frequent adverse events. It is necessary to carefully select patients and adjust treatment regimens in older patients with GC to safely administer chemotherapy and subsequently achieve satisfactory long-term outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Passive radiative cooling involves the emission of thermal radiation into cold space and the reflection of solar radiation, which aims to cool and lower the temperature of objects. However, currently most radiative coolers have a white appearance which restricts their potential applications. We develop a coloured bilayer radiative cooling membrane using polyvinylidene fluoride/tetraethoxysilane (PVDF/TEOS) fibres, with incorporation of phase change materials (PCMs) and active dyes through a simple and large-area electrospinning process. In comparison to traditional emitters, PCM-incorporated colourful coolers provide energy storage capacity and colourful appearances. Our phase-transition-based colourful flexible film (PCFF) achieves a total solar reflectance of 0.81 and a mid-infrared (8-13µm) emissivity of 0.85 with superior mechanical strength and good hydrophobicity. We experimentally demonstrate that our PCFF can significantly reduce the temperature of objects exposed to direct sunlight, with a cooling effect of up to 9 °C compared to commercial fabrics of similar materials and colours. Our work provides a promising starting point for the design and manufacture of colourful and flexible thermal control films.

BACKGROUND/AIM: In the previous phase I/II study, we established neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) using bi-weekly docetaxel, cisplatin, and S-1 (DCS) for clinical stage III gastric cancer. This study aimed to clarify long-term outcomes of this treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and prognostic factors for RFS and OS were identified by univariate analysis. RESULTS: A total of 47 patients with clinical stage III gastric cancer were enrolled in this study. The 5-year RFS and OS rates were 69.8% and 74.3%, respectively, in all registered patients. Moreover, the 5-year OS and RFS rates in patients receiving R0 gastrectomy were 68.0% and 79.4%, respectively. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) before NAC ≥2.41, prognostic nutritional index (PNI) before NAC ≤50.4, Glasgow prognostic score before NAC classification 2, NLR after NAC ≥1.43, PNI after NAC <48.0, and Grade 1a/1b pathological response significantly worsened RFS. NLR after NAC ≥1.43, PNI before NAC ≤50.4, NLR after NAC ≥1.43, and body weight loss >5 kg after NAC significantly worsened OS. CONCLUSION: Although bi-weekly DCS therapy as neoadjuvant setting showed acceptable long-term outcomes, poor immune-nutritional status before and after NAC caused worse long-term survival in stage III gastric cancer patients. It is warranted to conduct a well-designed prospective randomized control study to compare long-term outcomes using the bi-weekly DCS regimen between patients with and without immune-nutritional support during peri-NAC.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound-guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block (SCBPB) is performed by surgeons for upper limb anesthesia; however, certain patients need additional local anesthesia. This study aimed to identify risk factors for additional local anesthetic injection requirements. METHODS: In total, 269 patients receiving ultrasound-guided SCBPB were enrolled. Patient age, sex, body mass index, anesthetic drug dose, surgeon expertise (hand surgeon or resident), tourniquet time, comorbidities (diabetes mellitus and mental disorders), and preoperative blood pressure representing anxiety were compared between the additional local anesthesia and no additional local anesthesia groups matched for background using propensity scores. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine risk factor cut-off values with the highest predictive potential. RESULTS: Of 269 patients, 41 (15.2%) required additional intraoperative local anesthesia. Among surgical sites, elbow surgery showed the highest prevalence of the need for additional local anesthesia (17/41, 41%). A high body mass index and high systolic blood pressure before surgery were identified as risk factors for additional intraoperative local anesthesia requirement. Furthermore, systolic blood pressure > 170 mmHg (area under the curve, 0.66) predicted the need for intraoperative local anesthesia with 36% sensitivity, 89% specificity, 37.5% positive predictive value, and 88.6% negative predictive value. The median systolic blood pressure was significantly greater in patients requiring additional local anesthesia than in those not requiring it [151 (139-171) mmHg vs. 145 (127-155) mmHg; P = 0.026]. CONCLUSION: Elbow surgery, obesity, and high systolic blood pressure (> 170 mmHg) before surgery are predictive of additional intraoperative local anesthesia requirement. BACKGROUND: Target lumen enlargement (TLE) or "late lumen enlargement" is often encountered after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-coated balloons (DCB). To date, the prognosis of coronary arterial lesions with or without TLE has not been clearly elucidated. AIMS: This study aimed to assess the long-term prognosis of coronary arterial lesions with or without TLE observed within 1 year (early TLE) after DCB angioplasty using serial quantitative angiographic follow-up. METHODS: One hundred and ninety-three consecutive patients (de novo coronary arterial lesions, 251) who underwent follow-up angiography within 1 year after DCB angioplasty (early follow-up, median: 6 months) were retrospectively evaluated. Of these, 97 patients (125 lesions) also underwent angiography more than 1 year after DCB angioplasty (late follow-up, median: 37 months). TLE was defined as an increase in minimal lumen diameter (MLD) after PCI at each follow-up. RESULTS: Early TLE was detected in 142 lesions (56.6%). Of these, 76 lesions were also evaluated at late follow-up. TLE persisted even at late follow-up in 67 of the 76 lesions (88.2%). An increase in MLD in early TLE (+) lesions was observed in the period between post-PCI and early follow-up (1.84 ± 0.06 vs. 2.12 ± 0.07 mm, p < 0.001) but not between early and late follow-up (2.12 ± 0.07 vs. 2.16 ± 0.07 mm, p = 0.74). In contrast, 49 of 109 lesions without early TLE were evaluated at late follow-up, of which 28 lesions (57.1%) showed TLE at late follow-up. The MLD of early TLE (-) lesions (n = 49) significantly increased from early (1.63 ± 0.061 mm) to late follow-up (1.84 ± 0.06 mm) (p < 0.001). No aneurysms were found in any of these cases. CONCLUSION: Early TLE was observed in more than half of the lesions, with the majority remaining at late follow-up. Alternatively, half of the lesions without early TLE showed late TLE, occurring biphasically after DCB angioplasty.

BACKGROUND: No studies have reported the effect of solitary living on adjuvant chemotherapy continuation in patients with gastric cancer. This study aimed to investigate the influence of solitary living on the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy after curative gastrectomy. METHODS: We enrolled 155 patients with pathological stage II/III gastric cancer who underwent gastrectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy between January 2013 and March 2020. The patients were divided into two groups according to their living conditions, the solitary group (n = 34) versus the non-solitary group (n = 121). Clinicopathological features, predictive factors for the continuation of adjuvant chemotherapy, and long-term survival were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The median body weight loss (BWL) at one month after surgery (8.9% vs. 7.0%, p = 0.01), and the rates of failure to continue six courses of chemotherapy were higher in the solitary group (41.2% vs. 14.9%, p = 0.002) than in the non-solitary group. Multivariate analysis revealed that solitary living was an independent predictive factor for discontinuing adjuvant chemotherapy (odds ratio 3.36, 95% confidence interval [CI; 1.32-8.58], p = 0.01) as well as 10% BWL at one month after surgery (odds ratio 3.99, 95% CI [1.57-10.2], p = 0.004). The relapse-free survival was significantly worse in the solitary group (p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Solitary living may be an independent risk factor for discontinuation of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with gastric cancer. It is necessary to examine whether social and medical support organized by medical institutes and the government improves the continuation of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients living alone.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major global parasitic disease caused by species of the genus Plasmodium. Zygotes of Plasmodium spp. undergo meiosis and develop into tetraploid ookinetes, which differentiate into oocysts that undergo sporogony. Homologous recombination (HR) occurs during meiosis and introduces genetic variation. However, the mechanisms of HR in Plasmodium are unclear. In humans, the recombinases DNA repair protein Rad51 homolog 1 (Rad51) and DNA meiotic recombinase 1 (Dmc1) are required for HR and are regulated by breast cancer susceptibility protein 2 (BRCA2). Most eukaryotes harbor BRCA2 homologs. Nevertheless, these have not been reported for Plasmodium. METHODS: A Brca2 candidate was salvaged from a database to identify Brca2 homologs in Plasmodium. To confirm that the candidate protein was Brca2, interaction activity between Plasmodium berghei (Pb) Brca2 (PbBrca2) and Rad51 (PbRad51) was investigated using a mammalian two-hybrid assay. To elucidate the functions of PbBrca2, PbBrca2 was knocked out and parasite proliferation and differentiation were assessed in mice and mosquitoes. Transmission electron microscopy was used to identify sporogony. RESULTS: The candidate protein was conserved among Plasmodium species, and it was indicated that it harbors critical BRCA2 domains including BRC repeats, tower, and oligonucleotide/oligosaccharide-binding-fold domains. The P. berghei BRC repeats interacted with PbRad51. Hence, the candidate was considered a Brca2 homolog. PbBrca2 knockout parasites were associated with reduced parasitemia with increased ring stage and decreased trophozoite stage counts, gametocytemia, female gametocyte ratio, oocyst number, and ookinete development in both mice and mosquitoes. Nevertheless, the morphology of the blood stages in mice and the ookinete stage was comparable to those of the wild type parasites. Transmission electron microscopy results showed that sporogony never progressed in Brca2-knockout parasites. CONCLUSIONS: Brca2 is implicated in nearly all Plasmodium life cycle stages, and especially in sporogony. PbBrca2 contributes to HR during meiosis.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic splenectomy for hilar lymph node (#10) dissection has shown no survival benefit for patients with proximal advanced gastric cancer that does not invade the greater curvature. However, the survival benefit of prophylactic splenectomy for proximal advanced gastric cancer invading the greater curvature side, particularly for clinically negative #10 lymph node metastasis (#10[-]) cases remains controversial. METHODS: This multi-institutional retrospective study enrolled 146 consecutive patients with proximal advanced gastric cancers invading the greater curvature side with clinical #10(-) who underwent R0 total gastrectomy. For 33 of these patients, splenectomy was performed, and the remaining 113 underwent spleen-preservation gastrectomy. Short- and long-term results were compared between the splenectomy and spleen-preservation groups, with the incidence of #10 metastasis in the splenectomy group and recurrence in the spleen-preservation group compared. RESULTS: In the splenectomy group, longer operative time, greater blood loss, more frequent postoperative abdominal infection, and longer hospital stay were observed than in the spleen-preservation group. The two groups exhibited no differences in median relapse-free survival time (31.1 vs 59.8 months; P = 0.684) or median overall survival time (64.9 vs 65.1 months; P = 0.765). The pathologic #10 lymph node metastasis rate was 3% in the splenectomy group, and the #10 lymph node recurrence rate was 2.7% in the spleen-preservation group. CONCLUSIONS: Prophylactic splenectomy showed more frequent postoperative morbidities and a longer hospital stay than spleen preservation, without any long-term survival benefits.

ABSTRACT

On the urgency of metal-free catalysts, two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have caused extensive researches because of distinctive optical and electronic properties. In the last decade, microwave methods have emerged in rapid and effective preparations of 2DMs for catalysis. Microwave heating offers several advantages namely direct, fast, selective heating and uniform reaction temperature compared to conventional heating methods, thus bringing about high-yield and high-purity products in minutes or even seconds. This review summarizes recent advances in microwave-assisted preparations of 2DMs-based catalysts and their state-of-the-art catalytic performances. Microwave heating mechanisms are briefly introduced mainly focusing on microwave-matter interactions, which can guide the choice of precursors, liquid media, substrates, auxiliaries and experiment parameters during microwave radiation. We especially provide a detailed insight into various microwave-assisted procedures, classified as exfoliation, synthesis, doping, modification and construction towards different 2DMs nanomaterials. We also discuss how microwave affects the synthetic composition and microstructure of 2DMs-based catalysts, thereby deeply influencing their optical and electronic properties and the catalytic performances. Finally, advantages, challenges and prospects of microwave-assisted approaches for 2DMs nanomaterials are summarized to inspire the effective and large-scale fabrication of novel 2DMs-based catalysts.

ABSTRACT

Royal jelly (RJ) has been used as a functional foodstuff and in cosmetics for many years. RJ contains various molecules, including major royal jelly proteins (MRJPs), and affords a number of health benefits such as anti-inflammatory activity. As MRJP3 has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory properties by the in vitro analysis, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of MRJP3 and its derived peptides both in vitro and in vivo. Expression of both tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin-6 (IL-6) mRNAs in lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-stimulated THP-1 cells was reduced by the addition of MRJP3 or its C-terminal tandem penta-peptide repeats (TPRs) sequence. In the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)-induced herpes stromal keratitis (HSK) model mice, the instillation of TPRs reduced the disease scores and the expression levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in HSV-1-infected eyes. In addition, synthetic penta-peptides derived from TPRs reduced the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 both in the THP-1 cell cultures and in the HSK model mice. Our results indicated that MRJP3 TPRs would be useful in controlling inflammation.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The benefits of surgery in older patients with gastric cancer are controversial. This single-institution retrospective study in Japan aimed to evaluate the impact of gastrectomy in older patients with gastric cancer. METHODS: A series of 234 patients aged ≥80 years with histologically confirmed gastric cancer had indications for surgical treatment at the Gastroenterological Center, Yokohama City University Medical Center, between April 2002 and December 2018. Patients who were lost to follow-up (n = 27), had tumors not eligible for surgery (n = 14), and could not achieve R0 resection (n = 7) were excluded from this retrospective study. The remaining 186 patients were included. Patient characteristics, intraoperative outcomes, postoperative complications, and long-term survival were evaluated. RESULTS: The incidence of postoperative complications with Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ II was observed in 61 patients (32.8%). The 5-year relapse-free survival and overall survival (OS) rates were 84.2% and 63.4%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that geriatric nutritional risk index (<98) (odds ratio, 1.97; p = 0.047), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (>2.36) (odds ratio, 1.94; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-3.67; p = 0.043), and total gastrectomy (TG) (odds ratio, 1.97; p = 0.042) significantly predicted postoperative complications. Moreover, TG (hazard ratio, 1.91; p = 0.036) was an independent prognostic factor of OS. CONCLUSIONS: Poor immunonutritional status and TG led to worse short-term outcomes. Moreover, TG was an independent prognostic factor of OS in older patients with gastric cancer. It is necessary to provide effective perioperative care, including nutritional support, to clarify whether short-term outcomes would be improved.

ABSTRACT

A ring-opening fluorination of isoxazoles has been developed. Upon treatment of isoxazoles with an electrophilic fluorinating agent (Selectfluor), fluorination followed by deprotonation leads to tertiary fluorinated carbonyl compounds. This method features mild reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance, and a simple experimental procedure. Diverse transformations of the resulting α-fluorocyanoketones were also demonstrated, furnishing a variety of fluorinated compounds.

ABSTRACT

We have discovered a ring-opening fluorination of bicyclic azaarenes. Upon treatment of bicyclic azaarenes such as pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridines with electrophilic fluorinating agents, fluorination of the aromatic ring is followed by a ring-opening reaction. Although this overall transformation can be classified as an electrophilic fluorination of an aromatic ring, it is a novel type of fluorination that results in construction of tertiary carbon-fluorine bonds. The present protocol can be applied to a range of bicyclic azaarenes, tolerating azines and a variety of functional groups. Additionally, mechanistic studies and enantioselective fluorination have been examined.

In this study, the effects of charge/discharge cycling on the thermal stability of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, a high-Ni cathode material, are systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction measurements show that there is almost no change in the bulk structure of the cathode after cycling. However, X-ray absorption fine structure measurements indicate that Ni in the surface layer is reduced and stable rock-salt structures are formed. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements show that the heat generation at the lowest temperature, which can trigger thermal runaway in batteries that use high-Ni cathodes, decreases significantly with the formation of rock-salt structures on the active material surface. This finding indicates that the rock-salt layer on the surface enhances the thermal stability of a high-Ni cathode. The change in the total heat generation with degradation, indicated by DSC measurements, is similar to that in the K-edge of Ni (i.e., the Ni valency), suggesting a strong correlation between the heat generation and crystal structure changes during cycling.

ABSTRACT

Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) is performed using carbon nanowalls (CNWs) for ionization-assisting substrates. The CNWs (referred to as high-quality CNWs) in the present study were grown using a radical-injection plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RI-PECVD) system with the addition of oxygen in a mixture of CH4 and H2 gases. High-quality CNWs were different with respect to crystallinity and C-OH groups, while showing similar wall-to-wall distances and a wettability comparable to CNWs (referred to as normal CNWs) grown without O2. The efficiency of SALDI was tested with both parameters of ion intensity and fragmental efficiency (survival yield (SY)) using N-benzylpyridinuim chloride (N-BP-CI). At a laser fluence of 4 mJ/cm2, normal CNWs had an SY of 0.97 and an ion intensity of 0.13, while 5-sccm-O2- high-quality CNWs had an SY of 0.89 and an ion intensity of 2.55. As a result, the sensitivity for the detection of low-molecular-weight analytes was improved with the high-quality CNWs compared to the normal CNWs, while an SY of 0.89 was maintained at a low laser fluence of 4 mJ/cm2. SALDI-MS measurements available with the high-quality CNWs ionization-assisting substrate provided high ionization and SY values.
