ABSTRACT

Respiratory infection, cancer, and heart failure can cause abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity. The immune responses within the cavity are orchestrated by leucocytes that reside in the serosal-associated lymphoid tissue. Natural antibodies (NAbs) are abundant in the serum (S) having a major role in systemic and mucosal immunity; however, their occurrence in pleural fluid (PF) remains an open question. Our aim herein was to detect and measure the levels of NAbs (IgM, IgG, IgA) targeting lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in both the pleural fluid and the serum of 78 patients with pleural effusions (PEs) of various etiologies. The values of anti-LPS NAb activity were extracted through a normalization step regarding the total IgM, IgG, and IgA levels, all determined by in-house ELISA. In addition, the ratios of PF/S values were analyzed further with other critical biochemical parameters from pleural fluids. Anti-LPS NAbs of all Ig classes were detected in most of the samples, while a significant increase of anti-LPS activity was observed in infectious and noninfectious compared with malignant PEs. Multivariate linear regression confirmed a negative correlation of IgM and IgA anti-LPS PF/S ratio with malignancy. Moreover, anti-LPS NAbs PF/S measurements led to increased positive and negative predictive power in ROC curves generated for the discrimination between benign and malignant PEs. Our results highlight the role of anti-LPS NAbs in the pleural cavity and demonstrate the potential translational impact that should be further explored.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Here we describe the detection and quantification of natural antibodies (NAbs) in the human pleural cavity. We show for the first time that IgM, IgG, and IgA anti-LPS natural antibodies are detected and measured in pleural effusions of infectious, noninfectious, and malignant etiologies and provide clinical correlates to demonstrate the translational impact of our findings.

ABSTRACT

Small airway disease (SAD) is a pathological condition that affects the bronchioles and non-cartilaginous airways 2 mm or less in diameter. These airways play a crucial role in respiratory function and are often implicated in various pulmonary disorders. Pulmonary fibrotic diseases are characterized by the thickening and scarring of lung tissue, leading to progressive respiratory failure. We aimed to present the link between SAD and fibrotic lung conditions. The evidence suggests that SAD may act as a precursor or exacerbating factor in the progression of fibrotic diseases. Patients with fibrotic conditions often exhibit signs of small airway dysfunction, which can contribute to worsening respiratory symptoms and decreased lung function. Moreover, individuals with advanced SAD are at a heightened risk of developing fibrotic changes in the lung. The interplay between inflammation, environmental factors, and genetic predisposition further complicates this association. The early detection and management of SAD can potentially mitigate the progression of fibrotic diseases, highlighting the need for comprehensive clinical evaluation and research. This review emphasizes the need to understand the evolving connection between SAD and pulmonary fibrosis, urging further detailed research to clarify the causes and potential treatment between the two entities.

ABSTRACT

The role of nutrition in the management of asthma in obese patients is of increasing interest due to their limited response to inhaled corticosteroids. Some studies note that through diet and lifestyle, there can be an improvement in asthma control. The aim of the present study was to investigate the adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and its association with asthma severity and quality of life in patients with bronchial asthma. This is a cross-sectional study of 85 patients (70.6% female), with a mean age of 57 years, from the General University Hospital of Larissa and, more specifically, patients of the outpatient asthma clinic. Data were collected with the use of specific questionnaires. In relation to BMI, 12.9% of participants were of a normal weight, 45.9% were overweight, 25.9% were obese level I, 5.9% were obese level II, and 9.4% were in the morbidly obese range. Based on the Med Diet Score (ranging from 21 to 35), most participants (85.9%) reported moderate adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. Further analysis examined the correlations of the PCS-12 score with the frequency of consumption of each of the 11 food categories, as well as all demographic and health behavior variables. The ranked correlations indicated a significant relationship between PCS-12 score and Med Diet adherence and the consumption of alcoholic beverages (r = 0.437, p < 0.05), in accordance with the Mediterranean Diet suggestions, as well as a negative relationship with BMI score (r = -0.454, p < 0.010). Moreover, significant correlations were also present between the physical quality of life and AQLQ score and work type, as well as gender, age, and marital status. The results of our study showed a high rate of obesity in patients with asthma at the General University Hospital of Larissa and moderate adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. Increased BMI and alcoholic beverage consumption in asthma patients were significant predictors of lower physical health-related quality of life. In conclusion, personal and society-level interventions are required to effectively address obesity and poor diet in patients with asthma.

ABSTRACT

The biological functions of osteopontin (OPN) are diverse and specific to physiological and pathophysiological conditions implicated in inflammation, biomineralization, cardiovascular diseases, cellular viability, cancer, diabetes, and renal stone disease. We aimed to present the role of OPN in respiratory health and disease. OPN influences the immune system and is a chemo-attractive protein correlated with respiratory disease severity. There is evidence that OPN can advance the disease stage associated with its fibrotic, inflammatory, and immune functions. OPN contributes to eosinophilic airway inflammation. OPN can destroy the lung parenchyma through its neutrophil influx and fibrotic mechanisms, linking OPN to at least one of the two major chronic obstructive pulmonary disease phenotypes. Respiratory diseases that involve irreversible lung scarring, such as idiopathic pulmonary disease, are linked to OPN, with protein levels being overexpressed in individuals with severe or advanced stages of the disorders and considerably lower levels in those with less severe symptoms. OPN plays a significant role in lung cancer progression and metastasis. It is also implicated in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension, coronavirus disease 2019, and granuloma generation.

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), a rare and aggressive pleural tumor, has significant histological and molecular heterogeneity. Primary Cilium (PC), an organelle of emerging importance in malignancies, has been scarcely investigated in MPM. A critical molecular complex for the PC function is the BBSome and here we aimed at assessing its expression patterns in ordinary 2D and spheroid 3D cell cultures. METHODS: A human benign mesothelial cell line (MeT-5A), MPM cell lines (M14K, epithelioid MPM; MSTO, biphasic MPM), and primary MPM cells (pMPM) were used. Primers specific for the human BBS1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 18 transcripts were designed, and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was done with ß-actin as the gene of reference. The relative gene expression across 2D and 3D cultures was analyzed by the expression factor (mean of 1/ΔCt values). With the 2-∆∆Ct method the gene expression fold changes were assessed from qRT-PCR data. Molecular changes using the PC-modulating drugs ammonium sulfate (AS) and lithium chloride (LC) were also determined. RESULTS: PC was present in all cells used in the study at approximately 15% of the observed area. BBSome transcripts were differentially expressed in different dimensions of cell culture (2D vs. 3D) in all cell lines and pMPM. Treatment with AS and LC affected the expression of the ciliary BBS2 and BBS18 genes in the benign as well as in the MPM cells. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate distinct BBSome molecular profiles in human benign and MPM cells cultured in 2D and 3D dimensions and support the notion that PC genes should be investigated as potential MPM therapeutic targets.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) infection is a life-threatening infection caused by certain bacteria belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. More than 10 million subjects are newly sick from this infection every year globally. At the same time, TB is quite prevalent among subjects who come from lower socioeconomic layers of general population, and marginalized sections and areas. Sarcopenia is a muscle disease that derives from adverse muscle alterations and is related to the loss of muscle strength and mass. It is a major medical issue due to its increased adverse outcomes including falls, functional decline, frailty, hospitalizations, increased mortality, and healthcare costs. METHODS: This study examined the potential interplay between the TB infection and sarcopenia through conducting a non-systematic review of the current literature. RESULTS: It has been recorded that the prevalence of sarcopenia among TB survivors is high, whilst the danger of TB among the elderly increases with sarcopenia and physical inactivity. Nevertheless, sufficient protein and total energy intake are associated with a low risk of sarcopenia in TB survivors. CONCLUSIONS: Further studies are needed to validate these findings and shed more light on the upcoming different aspects of this intriguing association.

BACKGROUND: The derivatives-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) and plasma antioxidant capacity (PAT) tests are oxidative indexes. Severe asthma has been related to oxidative stress. We aimed to investigate d-ROMs and PAT values in severely controlled asthmatics and the correlation of these values with lung function. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from severely controlled asthmatics and centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 min. The supernatant was collected. The assays were performed within three hours of collection. The fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), impulse oscillometry (IOS), and spirometry were determined. Symptom control was recorded using the asthma control test (ACT). RESULTS: Approximately 40 patients with severe controlled asthma (75%: women), mean age of 62 ± 12 years, were recruited. Approximately 5% had obstructive spirometry. The IOS revealed airway abnormalities even though the spirometric results were within the normal range, with it being more sensitive than spirometry. The D-ROMs and PAT test values were higher than normal, indicating oxidative stress in severe asthmatics with controlled asthma. D-ROMs were positively correlated with R20 values, indicating central airway resistance. CONCLUSIONS: The IOS technique revealed an otherwise hidden airway obstruction with spirometry. The D-ROMs and PAT tests revealed a high level of oxidative stress in severe controlled asthmatics. D-ROMs correlate with R20, indicating central airway resistance.

ABSTRACT

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The association between lung and gut microbiomes in the pathogenesis of COPD has been recently uncovered. The goal of this study was to discuss the role of the lung and gut microbiomes in COPD pathophysiology. A systematic search of the PubMed database for relevant articles submitted up to June 2022 was performed. We examined the association between the lung and gut microbiome dysbiosis, reflected in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), lung tissue, sputum, and feces samples, and the pathogenesis and progression of COPD. It is evident that the lung and gut microbiomes affect each other and both play a vital role in the pathogenesis of COPD. However, more research needs to be carried out to find the exact associations between microbiome diversity and COPD pathophysiology and exacerbation genesis. Another field that research should focus on is the impact of treatment interventions targeting the human microbiome in preventing COPD genesis and progression.

INTRODUCTION: Primary cilium (PC) is a single non-motile antenna-like organelle composed of a microtubule core axon originating from the mother centriole of the centrosome. The PC is universal in all mammalian cells and protrudes to the extracellular environment receiving mechanochemical cues that it transmits in the cell. AIM: To investigate the role of PC in mesothelial malignancy in the context of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) phenotypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effect of pharmacological deciliation [using ammonium sulphate (AS) or chloral hydrate (CH)] and PC elongation [using lithium chloride (LC)] on cell viability, adhesion, and migration (2D cultures) as well as in mesothelial sphere formation, spheroid invasion and collagen gel contraction (3D cultures) was investigated in benign mesothelial MeT-5A cells and in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) cell lines, M14K (epithelioid) and MSTO (biphasic), and primary malignant pleural mesothelioma cells (pMPM). RESULTS: Pharmacological deciliation or elongation of the PC significantly affected cell viability, adhesion, migration, spheroid formation, spheroid invasion and collagen gel contraction in MeT-5A, M14K, MSTO cell lines and in pMPM cells compared to controls (no drug treatment). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate a pivotal role of the PC in functional phenotypes of benign mesothelial cells and MPM cells.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 is a life-threatening RNA virus that may cause an acute respiratory syndrome associated with extremely high morbidity and mortality rates. Folic acid (FA), also known as folate, is an essential vitamin vital for human homeostasis, participating in many biochemical pathways, and its deficiency has been associated with viral infection vulnerability. In this review, we investigated the association between FA intake and SARS-CoV-2 infection, along with the existence of any potential impact of FA on the health outcome of patients suffering from this new viral infection. METHODS: Studies included were patients' and in silico and molecular docking studies. RESULTS: Data from in silico studies and molecular docking support that FA inhibits SARS-CoV-2 entry into the host and viral replication, binding at essential residues. Accordingly, in patients' studies, a protective role of FA supplementation against SARS-CoV-2 infection is indicated. However, contradictory data from observational studies indicate that FA supplementation, often linked to deficits during systemic inflammation due to SARS-CoV-2, increases the risk of post-infection mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Future randomized controlled trial studies, including the FA pharmacological group, are needed to better understand the role of FA as a potential protective or mortality risk indicator in COVID-19 patients.

INTRODUCTION: The most clinically useful concept in asthma is based on the intensity of treatment required to achieve good asthma control. Biomarkers to guide therapy are needed. AIMS: To investigate the role of circulating levels of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor suPAR as a marker for asthma severity. METHODS: We recruited patients evaluated at the Asthma Clinic, University of Thessaly, Greece. Asthma severity and control were defined according to the GINA strategy and Asthma Contro Test (ACT). Anthropometrics, spirometry, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), suPAR, blood cell count, c-reactive protein (CRP), and analyses of kidney and liver function were obtained. Patients with a history of inflammatory, infectious, or malignant disease or other lung disease, more than 5 pack years of smoking history, or corticosteroid therapy were excluded. RESULTS: We evaluated 74 asthma patients (69% female, mean age 57 ± 17 years, mean body mass index (BMI) 29 ± 6 kg/m2). In total, 24%, 13%, 6%, 5%, 29% and 23% of the participants had mild well-controlled, mild uncontrolled, moderate well-controlled, moderate uncontrolled, severe well-controlled, and severe uncontrolled asthma, respectively. Overall, 67% had T2-high asthma, 26% received biologics (15% and 85% received omalizumab and mepolizumab, respectively), and 34% had persistent airway obstruction. suPAR levels were significantly lower in asthmatics with moderate uncontrolled asthma than in patients with severe uncontrolled asthma without (2.1 ± 0.4 vs. 3.3 ± 0.7 ng/mL, p = 0.023) or with biologics (2.1 ± 0.4 vs. 3.6 ± 0.8 ng/mL, p = 0.029). No correlations were found between suPAR levels and age, BMI, T2 biomarkers, CRP, or spirometric parameters. CONCLUSIONS: suPAR levels were higher in asthmatics with severe disease than in those with moderate uncontrolled asthma.

ABSTRACT

Background: Both SARS-CoV-2 infection and/or vaccination result in the production of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. We aimed to compare the antibody titers against SARS-CoV-2 in different scenarios for antibody production. Methods: A surveillance program was conducted in the municipality of Deskati in January 2022. Antibody titers were obtained from 145 participants while parallel recording their infection and/or vaccination history. The SARS-CoV-2 IgG II Quant method (Architect, Abbott, IL, USA) was used for antibody testing. Results: Advanced age (>56 years old) was associated with higher antibody titers. No significant differences were detected in antibody titers among genders, BMI, smoking status, comorbidities, vaccine brands, and months after the last dose. Hospitalization length and re-infection were predictors of antibody titers. The individuals who were fully or partially vaccinated and were also double infected had the highest antibody levels (25,017 ± 1500 AU/mL), followed by people who were fully vaccinated (20,647 ± 500 AU/mL) or/partially (15,808 ± 1800 AU/mL) vaccinated and were infected once. People who were only vaccinated had lower levels of antibodies (9946 ± 300 AU/mL), while the lowest levels among all groups were found in individuals who had only been infected (1124 ± 200 AU/mL). Conclusions: Every hit (infection or vaccination) gives an additional boost to immunization status.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia seems to be an emerging health issue worldwide, concerning the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, accompanied by adverse outcomes. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory condition that is widespread in the world, affecting approximately 8% of adults. Although data are scarce, we aim to shed light on the potential association between low muscle mass and asthma and point out any probable negative feedback on each other. METHODS: We searched within the PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases. STUDY SELECTIONS: Three studies were included in our analysis. Only original studies written in English were included, while the references of the research articles were thoroughly examined for more relevant studies. Moreover, animal model studies were excluded. RESULTS: 2% to 17% of asthmatics had sarcopenia according to the existent literature. Sarcopenic asthmatic patients seem to have reduced lung function, while their mortality risk may be increased. Furthermore, patients with asthma- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome phenotype and sarcopenia might have a higher risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis progression, leading consequently to an increased risk of fractures and disability. CONCLUSIONS: Emerging data support that pulmonologists should be aware of the sarcopenia concept and be prepared to evaluate the existence of low muscle mass in their asthmatic patients.

Influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia are major causes of increased morbidity and mortality among elderly and COPD patients. Vaccines against influenza and pneumococcus are recommended for COPD patients according to GOLD 2020 guidelines to prevent serious illnesses. Despite their high morbidity and mortality burden, the vaccination coverage rates remain far below the WHO's recommended targets. In Greece, there are insufficient data on influenza and pneumococcal immunization rates among younger COPD patients. This study investigated whether COPD patients under the age of 65 are adequately vaccinated against influenza and pneumococcus and the factors that influence vaccination rates. 1100 individuals at 22 Primary Health Centers in Central Greece participated in a two-year spirometry monitoring program. Face-to-face interviews were used to collect information regarding demographics, smoking status, comorbidities, respiratory illnesses in the previous two years, and influenza and pneumococcal vaccination coverage from all COPD patients. 117 patients aged 40-65 years old were diagnosed with COPD and 80.3% were males. Only 40.2% of them had received influenza and 32.5% pneumococcus vaccinations. Age, advanced stage of COPD, years on COPD diagnosis, respiratory infection within the previous two years, comorbidity, and smoking cessation are all positively connected with influenza and pneumococcus vaccine coverage in younger COPD patients. Gender, education level, and marital status did not affect influenza and pneumococcus vaccination rates. These vaccination rates among younger COPD patients demonstrate the need for increased awareness and knowledge about the advantages of immunizations in lowering morbidity and mortality.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of anticoagulant therapy-associated hemorrhagic complications in hospitalized patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) has been scarcely investigated. AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of hemorrhages in hospitalized PE patients. METHODS: The Information System "ASKLIPIOS™ HOSPITAL" implemented in the Respiratory Medicine Department, University of Thessaly, was used to collect demographic, clinical and outcome data from January 2013 to April 2021. RESULTS: 326 patients were included. Males outnumbered females. The population's mean age was 68.7 ± 17.0 years. The majority received low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Only 5% received direct oral anticoagulants. 15% of the population were complicated with hemorrhage, of whom 18.4% experienced a major event. Major hemorrhages were fewer than minor (29.8% vs. 70.2%, p = 0.001). Nadroparin related to 83.3% of the major events. Hematuria was the most common hemorrhagic event. 22% of patients with major events received a transfusion, and 11% were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). The events lasted for 3 ± 2 days. No death was recorded. CONCLUSIONS: 1/5 of the patients hospitalized for PE complicated with hemorrhage without a fatal outcome. The hemorrhages were mainly minor and lasted for 3 ± 2 days. Among LMWHs, nadroparin was related to a higher percentage of hemorrhages.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has become a global pandemic, giving rise to a serious global health threat. Many countries including Greece have seen a two-wave pattern of reported cases, with a first wave in spring and a second in autumn of 2020. METHODS: A cross-sectional seroprevalence study was designed to measure the prevalence of IgG antibodies with a quantitative SARS-CoV-2 IgG lab-based serology test, chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay, against novel coronavirus in rural areas in Greece after the second pandemic wave. The study was conducted on 29 January 2021 in a rural semi-closed area, the municipality of Deskati, prefecture of western Macedonia in Greece after the second pandemic wave. RESULTS: Sixty-nine participants were included in this study. The present study demonstrated a high prevalence of COVID-19 infection (31 of 69 total participants; 45%) and those who were working in the public sector were at higher risk of COVID-19 infection in comparison to their counterparts in private sector (p=0.05364), (relative risk 2.64; 95% confidence interval 1.001-7.086). CONCLUSION: The study presents data showing a high prevalence of herd immunity for COVID-19 in a semi-closed area in Greece. These findings might help to understand the characteristics of this second wave, the behaviour and danger of SARS-CoV-2 in rural areas in Greece and Europe generally.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Antibody seroprevalence in rural communities remains poorly investigated. We compared the SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in two Greek communities in June and July 2021 after the end of the Delta-driven pandemic wave that started in November 2020. One community was affected worse than the other. METHODS: The SARS-CoV-2 IgG II Quant method (Architect, Abbott, IL, USA) was used for antibody testing. RESULTS: We found a high rate of SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity in both communities, approaching 77.5%. In the area with a higher burden of COVID-19, Malesina, seropositivity was achieved with vaccine-acquired and naturally acquired immunity, whereas in the low-burden context of Domokos, the high rates of seropositivity were achieved mainly with vaccination. Previously infected individuals were less likely to be vaccinated than previously uninfected adults. The antibody titers were significantly higher in previously infected, vaccinated participants than in unvaccinated ones. In total, 4% and 10% of the unvaccinated population were diagnosed seropositive for the first time while not knowing about the previous infection. Age and gender did not impact antibody titers in high- or low-burden contexts. CONCLUSIONS: Before the Omicron pandemic wave, herd immunity was reached in different contexts in Greece. Higher antibody titers were measured in infected vaccinated individuals than in infected unvaccinated ones.

BACKGROUND: Obese people are at risk of becoming severely ill due to SARS-CoV-2. The exercise benefits on health have been emphasized. AIM: To investigate the correlation of obesity with the length of hospitalization, the pre- and post-hospitalization exercise preferences of COVID-19 patients, and the impact of pre-admission or post-hospitalization physical activity on dyspnea one month after hospitalization and recovery time. METHODS: A telephone survey was conducted in patients hospitalized at the Respiratory Medicine Department, University of Thessaly, Greece, from November to December 2020. RESULTS: Two-thirds of the patients were obese. Obesity was not associated with the hospitalization time. Two-thirds of the patients used to engage in physical activity before hospitalization. Males exercised in a higher percentage and more frequently than women before and after hospitalization. The methodical pre-hospitalization exercise was associated with lower levels of dyspnea one month after hospitalization. In-hospital weight loss, comorbidities, and dyspnea on admission independently predicted longer recovery time. Lockdown had boosted men's desire to exercise than females who were negatively affected. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity is common in COVID-19 hospitalized patients. In-hospital weight loss, comorbidities, and dyspnea on admission predicted a longer post-hospitalization recovery time. The pre-hospitalization exercise was associated with less post-hospitalization dyspnea and recovery time.

OBJECTIVE: Hypoxia induces interleukin-6 (IL-6) production in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Low serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels have been linked to OSAS susceptibility. Serum 25(OH)D levels have been negatively correlated with serum IL-6 levels in patients with chronic inflammation. No data exist to assess whether there is a correlation between 25(OH)D and IL-6 serum levels in OSAS, while the impact of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on IL-6 or 25(OH)D levels needs further investigation. We aimed to compare the serum 25(OH)D and IL-6 levels between OSAS patients and controls, examine a possible correlation between 25(OH)D and IL-6 levels and the changes of their concentrations after twelve months of CPAP therapy in OSAS patients. METHODS: 15 newly-diagnosed OSAS patients and 15 non-apneic controls were recruited. Serum IL-6 and 25(OH)D levels were measured in the study population at baseline and twelve months after CPAP initiation in OSAS patients. RESULTS: IL-6 levels were elevated in OSAS patients than controls and were positively and negatively correlated with body mass index (BMI) and minimum oxyhemoglobin saturation (minSpO2), respectively. Diabetes mellitus, BMI and minSpO2 independently predicted IL-6 levels. No difference was found in 25(OH)D levels between groups. No correlation between IL-6 and 25(OH)D levels was detected. Effective CPAP therapy did not impact IL-6 or 25(OH)D levels after one year in OSAS patients. CONCLUSIONS: No correlation between IL-6 and 25(OH)D levels was found. IL-6 levels were significantly elevated in OSAS patients than the controls and positively correlated with BMI, diabetes mellitus, and nocturnal hypoxemia.
