AHORA: a Spanish language tool to identify acute stroke symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a Spanish language tool for acute stroke identification. METHODS: A Spanish language translation of the Balance-Eyes-Face-Arm-Speech-Time tool was developed within our emergency medical services agency. RESULTS: The authors present a new prehospital stroke tool, Andar, Hablar, Ojos, Rostro and Ambos Brazos o Piernas (AHORA) (which means now in Spanish) to help combat the language barrier and reinforce the necessity to call 9-1-1 as soon as any stroke symptoms are noted. CONCLUSION: AHORA is a Spanish language tool that aims to help Spanish-speaking individuals to identify an acute stroke and obtain prompt help.

Impact of Music Therapy on Gait After Stroke.

Music therapy or music-supported therapy is a therapeutic modality sometimes used during the rehabilitation phase after an acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. The intervention suggests that the resulting audio-motor coupling can enhance motor function. Multiple clinical studies have reported various improvements-including cognitive, mood, and limb function. Gait impairment after stroke confers significant morbidity. The authors present a systematic review of randomized controlled trials that have examined the impact of music therapy on patient recovery, specifically on gait and ambulation.

Abnormal Bedside Ultrasound Findings in a Complex Patient With Kawasaki Disease.

We herein report a case of an 18-year-old female with Kawasaki disease who presented to the emergency department with epigastric abdominal pain and was subsequently found to have free fluid present in her abdomen visualized on bedside Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) exam. Kawasaki disease is an acute vasculitis syndrome that primarily affects children and can have serious complications such as coronary artery aneurysms. The use of ultrasound in emergency departments is rapidly increasing, with the FAST being one of the most commonly performed bedside ultrasound examinations. FAST exams are most commonly performed in trauma patients as well as being part of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) protocol. However, this case demonstrated that the FAST exam can also have application in other clinical scenarios and patient presentations where there is clinical suspicion of free intra-abdominal fluid.

What Do Spanish Speakers Think of the Andar, Hablar, Ojos, Rostro, Ambos Brazos o Piernas (AHORA) Stroke Tool?

AHORA (Andar, Hablar, Ojos, Rostro, Ambos Brazos o Piernas) is a Spanish language tool to identify stroke symptoms. A survey of 300 primarily Spanish-speaking, non-medical professionals was conducted to assess the acceptance of the tool, specifically about ease of understanding and ability to implement it. The overwhelming majority of respondents reacted very positively to the tool, finding it quite easy to learn, teach, and understand. Respondent feedback, pitfalls, and questions for further research are presented.
