ABSTRACT

The chain architecture and topology of macromolecules impact their physical properties and final performance, including their crystallization process. In this work, comb polymers constituted by poly(ethylene glycol), PEG, side chains, and a dithiol-yne-based ring polymer backbone have been studied, focusing on the micro- and nanostructures of the system, thermal behavior, and crystallization kinetics. The designed comb system allows us to investigate the role of a ring backbone, the impact of varying the distance between two neighboring side chains, and the effect of the molecular weight of the side chain. The results reflect that the governing factor in the crystalline properties is the molar mass of the side chains and that the tethering of PEG chains to the ring backbone brings important constraints to the crystallization process, reducing the crystallinity degree and slowing down the crystallization kinetics in comparison to analogue PEG homopolymers. We demonstrate that the effect of spatial hindrance in the comb-like PEG polymers drives the morphology toward highly ordered, self-assembled, semicrystalline superstructures with either extended interdigitated chain crystals or novel (for comb polymers) interdigitated folded chain lamellar crystals. These structures depend on PEG molecular weight, the distance between neighboring tethered PEG chains, and the crystallization conditions (nonisothermal versus isothermal). This work sheds light on the role of chain architecture and topology in the structure of comb-like semicrystalline polymers.

ABSTRACT

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects several areas of mental development. The onset of ASD occurs in the first few years of life, usually before the age of 3 years. Proper nutrition is important to ensure that an individual's nutrient and energy requirements are met, and it can also have a moderating effect on the progression of the disorder. A systematic database search was conducted as a narrative review to determine whether nutrition and specific diets can potentially alter gastrointestinal symptoms and neurobehavioral disorders. Databases such as Science Direct, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and Google Scholar were searched to find studies published between 2000 and September 2023 on the relationship between ASD, dietary approaches, and the role of dietary components. The review may indicate that despite extensive research into dietary interventions, there is a general lack of conclusive scientific data about the effect of therapeutic diets on ASD; therefore, no definitive recommendation can be made for any specific nutritional therapy as a standard treatment for ASD. An individualized dietary approach and the dietician's role in the therapeutic team are very important elements of every therapy. Parents and caregivers should work with nutrition specialists, such as registered dietitians or healthcare providers, to design meal plans for autistic individuals, especially those who would like to implement an elimination diet.

ABSTRACT

Strawberry cultivars Portola and Enduro, as well as raspberry cultivars Enrosadira and Kwazi, were evaluated for their antioxidant potential after treatment with gaseous ozone and different refrigeration storage conditions. Their antioxidant capacity was investigated with ABTS and DPPH methods, and the chemical composition was determined by measuring the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) compounds. The classification of different samples of berry puree was influenced significantly by both the cultivars and the refrigeration storage method. Moreover, FTIR spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics was used as an alternative technique to conventional methods to determine the chemical composition of strawberries and raspberries. The chemometric discrimination of samples was achieved using principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) modelling procedures performed on the FTIR preprocessed spectral data for the fingerprint region (1800-500 cm-1). The fingerprint range between 1500 and 500 cm-1, corresponding to deformation vibrations from polysaccharides, pectin and organic acid content, had a significant impact on the grouping of samples. The results obtained by PCA-LDA scores revealed a clear separation between four classes of samples and demonstrated a high overall classification rate of 97.5% in differentiating between the raspberry and strawberry cultivars.

Star block copolymer electrolytes with a lithium-ion conducting phase are investigated in the present work to assess the influence of this complex architecture compared to that of the linear one, on both, bulk morphology and ionic conductivity. For that purpose, the controlled synthesis of a series of poly(styrene-co-benzyl methacrylate)-b-poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] [P(S-co-BzMA)-b-POEGA] block copolymers (BCPs) by reversible addition-fragmentation transfer polymerization was performed from either a monofunctional or a tetrafunctional chain transfer agent containing trithiocarbonate groups. We emphasized how a small amount of styrene (6 mol %) drastically improved the control of the RAFT polymerization of benzyl methacrylate mediated by the tetrafunctional chain transfer agent. Transmission electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering demonstrated a clear segregation of the BCPs in the presence of lithium salt. Interestingly, the star BCPs gave rise to highly ordered lamellar structures as compared to that of the linear analogues. Consequently, the reduced lamellae tortuosity of self-assembled star BCPs improved the lithium conductivity by more than 8 times at 30 °C for ∼30 wt % of the POEGA conductive phase.

ABSTRACT

Human bodily mechanisms and functions produce low-frequency vibrations. Our ability to perceive these vibrations is limited by our range of hearing. However, in-ear infrasonic hemodynography (IH) can measure low-frequency vibrations (<20 Hz) created by vital organs as an acoustic waveform. This is captured using a technology that can be embedded into wearable devices such as in-ear headphones. IH can acquire sound signals that travel within arteries, fluids, bones, and muscles in proximity to the ear canal, allowing for measurements of an individual's unique audiome. We describe the heart rate and heart rhythm results obtained in time-series analysis of the in-ear IH data taken simultaneously with ECG recordings in two dedicated clinical studies. We demonstrate a high correlation (r = 0.99) between IH and ECG acquired interbeat interval and heart rate measurements and show that IH can continuously monitor physiological changes in heart rate induced by various breathing exercises. We also show that IH can differentiate between atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm with performance similar to ECG. The results represent a demonstration of IH capabilities to deliver accurate heart rate and heart rhythm measurements comparable to ECG, in a wearable form factor. The development of IH shows promise for monitoring acoustic imprints of the human body that will enable new real-time applications in cardiovascular health that are continuous and noninvasive.

ABSTRACT

Natural defensive substances synthesized by plants that could replace synthetic pesticides in the protection of plants against insect invasions are constantly being sought. The study assessed changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of secondary metabolites in horse chestnut leaves collected in different locations and differing in the sensitivity of the plant to the invasion by the horse-chestnut leaf miner. An attempt was made to identify compounds that are most responsible for the increased plant resistance to this threat. Additionally, changes in the anatomy of chestnut leaves affected by the pest were presented. It was noticed that the trees differed in the composition of secondary metabolites already in the initial growing season, which should be related to the influence of habitat conditions. The analysis of the profile of the compounds in non-infested and infested horse chestnut leaves revealed a clear response of the plant to the stress factor, i.e., the foraging of the horse-chestnut leaf miner. Catechins seem to be compounds involved in plant resistance. The leaf anatomy showed enhanced accumulation of phenolic compounds at the pest foraging sites. Hypertrophy and thickened and cracked cell walls of the spongy parenchyma were visible in the vicinity of the mines.

ABSTRACT

As a promising matrix material for anchoring sulfur in the cathode for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, porous conducting supports have gained much attention. In this work, sulfur-containing C-rich SiCN composites are processed from silicon carbonitride (SiCN) ceramics, synthesized at temperatures from 800 to 1100 °C. To embed sulfur in the porous SiCN matrix, an easy and scalable procedure, denoted as melting-diffusion method, is applied. Accordingly, sulfur is infiltrated under solvothermal conditions at 155 °C into pores of carbon-rich silicon carbonitride (C-rich SiCN). The impact of the initial porosity and microstructure of the SiCN ceramics on the electrochemical performance of the synthesized SiCN-sulfur (SiCN-S) composites is analysed and discussed. A combination of the mesoporous character of SiCN and presence of a disordered free carbon phase makes the electrochemical performance of the SiCN matrix obtained at 900 °C superior to that of SiCN synthesized at lower and higher temperatures. A capacity value of more than 195 mAh/g over 50 cycles at a high sulfur content of 66 wt.% is achieved.

ABSTRACT

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is, undoubtedly, a healthy habit that should be adopted by everyone (particularly due to the nutrients and functional properties of fruits and vegetables). However, at the same time, due to their production in the external environment, there is an increased risk of their being infected with various pathogenic microorganisms, some of which cause serious foodborne illnesses. In order to preserve and distribute safe, raw, and minimally processed fruits and vegetables, many strategies have been proposed, including bioprotection. The use of lactic acid bacteria in raw and minimally processed fruits and vegetables helps to better maintain their quality by extending their shelf life, causing a significant reduction and inhibition of the action of important foodborne pathogens. The antibacterial effect of lactic acid bacteria is attributed to its ability to produce antimicrobial compounds, including bacteriocins, with strong competitive action against many microorganisms. The use of bacteriocins, both separately and in combination with edible coatings, is considered a very promising approach for microbiological quality, and safety for postharvest storage of raw and minimally processed fruits and vegetables. Therefore, the purpose of the review is to discuss the biopreservation of fresh fruits and vegetables through the use of lactic acid bacteria as a green and safe technique.

ABSTRACT

Q fever is an emerging infectious disease in Europe. Q fever is a zoonosis and infected animals are the main source of infection. Ticks may act as a vector and transmit the pathogen to animals and humans. Q fever has non-specific symptoms and is difficult to diagnose. Results of serological tests are positive many days after manifestation of symptoms. PCR method might be useful in the diagnostic process.

ABSTRACT

In this review, the primary objective was to systematize knowledge about the possibility of improving the health-promoting properties of raw plant products, defined as an increase in the content of bioactive compounds, by using ozone. The greatest attention has been paid to the postharvest treatment of plant raw materials with ozone because of its widespread use. The effect of this treatment on the health-promoting properties depends on the following different factors: type and variety of the fruit or vegetable, form and method of ozone treatment, and dosage of ozone. It seems that ozone applied in the form of ozonated water works more gently than in gaseous form. Relatively high concentration and long contact time used simultaneously might result in increased oxidative stress which leads to the degradation of quality. The majority of the literature demonstrates the degradation of vitamin C and deterioration of color after treatment with ozone. Unfortunately, it is not clear if ozone can be used as an elicitor to improve the quality of the raw material. Most sources prove that the best results in increasing the content of bioactive components can be obtained by applying ozone at a relatively low concentration for a short time immediately after harvest.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Tick-borne co-infections are a serious epidemiological and clinical problem. Only a few studies aimed to investigate the effect of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) co-infection in the course of the inflammatory process and the participation of chemokines in the pathomechanism of these diseases. The aim of the study was to evaluate CCL-4, CCL-17, CCL-20, and IL-8 serum concentrations in patients with HGA, TBE and HGA + TBE co-infection. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients with HGA (n = 20), TBE (n = 49) and HGA + TBE (n = 18) were included to the study. The control group (CG) consisted of 20 healthy people. Concentrations of cytokines were measured in serum using commercial ELISA assays. In patients with TBE and HGA + TBE inflammatory markers were assessed during the acute and convalescent period. The results were analyzed using non-parametric tests with p < 0.05 considered as significant. RESULTS: Before treatment, significantly higher concentrations of IL-8, CCL-4 and CCL-20 were observed in HGA patients. CCL-4 and CCL-20 concentrations were significantly higher in TBE patients compared to CG. Concentrations of IL-8, CCL-4, and CCL-20 were significantly higher in HGA + TBE than in CG. After treatment, a significant reduction of IL-8, CCL-4, and CCL-20 concentrations in TBE patients and IL-8 in HGA + TBE co-infection was observed. CCL-4 concentration was higher in HGA + TBE co-infection in comparison to patients with TBE after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms that concentrations of IL-8, CCL-4, and CCL-20 are increased in the course of HGA and TBE. Their concentrations in serum may be used to monitor the course of TBE and HGA, as well as possibly detect co-infections with the diseases.

BACKGROUND: Lyme neuroborreliosis (NB) is a tick-borne infectious disorder of the nervous system caused by Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes. There are not many data available regarding the differences in the course of NB in children and adults. The aim of our study was to compare the clinical course of NB between children and adults. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of medical documentation of 181 patients with NB was performed. The patients were divided into 2 groups: Group I: 57 children with NB; Group II: 124 adults with NB. Medical data, such as patients' age, sex, place of living (residence), time from a tick bite, subjective complaints, general examination results, laboratory parameters and treatment were analyzed. RESULTS: In children, the most common symptoms were headache (89.5%), neck stiffness (64.9%) and nausea and vomiting (56.1%). In adults, the most common symptoms were headache (77.4%), facial nerve palsy (59.7%), neck stiffness (59.7%), vertigo (41.9%) and lumbosacral region pain (37.1%). Bannwarth's syndrome was observed in 10.5% of children and 36.3% of adults. In cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in children, the pleocytosis at admission was higher than in adults, but protein concentration was significantly lower. There were no differences in percentage of mononuclear cells in CSF smear between the groups. In CSF examination after treatment, a decrease in pleocytosis and protein concentration was observed in both groups. Analysis of effectiveness of treatment mostly with third generation cephalosporins (defined as complete recovery) between the groups, calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the use of the log-rank test, showed no significant differences between children and adults (log-rank P = 0.619). CONCLUSIONS: In children, NB more frequently presented as meningitis, and in adults in the form of Bannwarth's syndrome. CSF pleocytosis in children with NB was higher than in adults, while the protein concentration in children was lower. Outcomes in children and adults were favorable and did not differ after standard NB treatment.

ABSTRACT

Neuroborreliosis is one of the manifestations of Lyme disease involving central and peripheral nervous system. It is caused by infection with Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete which is transmitted by tick bites. Neuroborreliosis can affect both adults and children. The clinical course in children is often different than in adults. The article discusses the most common clinical symptoms, complications, diagnostics and treatment of neuroborreliosis in children.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to check whether measurement of TLR-2 in serum or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) can help differentiate between neuroborreliosis (NB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Eighty patients with meningitis and meningoencephalitis were divided into two groups: Group I - patients with NB (n = 40) and Group II - patients with TBE (n = 40). Diagnosis was based on the clinical picture, CSF examination and presence of specific antibodies in serum and CSF. The control group (CG) consisted of healthy blood donors (n = 25) and patients in whom inflammatory process in central nervous system was excluded (n = 25). Concentration of TLR-2 was measured using a commercial kit [TLR-2 Elisa Kit (EIAab, China)]. The serum and CSF TLR-2 concentration of NB patients was significantly higher than in CG. The serum and CSF TLR-2 concentration in TBE patients was significantly higher than in the CG. Receiver operating characteristic analysis of the serum TLR-2 concentration showed significant differences between the group of patients with NB and a group of patients with TBE. TLR-2 is involved in the development of inflammatory process in the CNS caused by both tick-borne pathogens: viral and bacterial as TLR-2 concentration in both CSF and serum differentiates these groups from healthy patients. Although TLR-2 cannot be used as a sole and reliable biomarker differentiating NB from TBE, results of our study are a step forward toward discovering such biomarker in the future.

ABSTRACT

The effect of treatment of pepper fruits with gaseous ozone and storage time following the ozonation process on changes in the content of lipophilic fraction is analyzed for the first time in this paper. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of ozone treatment on the composition of lipophilic compound fraction and its antioxidant activity (AA). Pepper fruits of cv. Cyklon were ozonated for 1 and 3 h immediately after harvesting. Then, the fruits were stored for 30 days under refrigeration conditions. The total content of phenolic compounds and the AA of the lipophilic fraction isolated from the pericarp and placenta of the fruits were investigated after 10, 20, and 30 days of storage. Additionally, quantitative high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detection analysis of individual phenolic compounds was performed. The results revealed that the content and activity of secondary metabolites varied during storage, with the highest values recorded on the 20th day after harvest, both in control and ozonated fruits, regardless of the ozone dosage used. Treatment of the fruits with ozone for 3 h, but not for 1 h, exhibited a positive effect on the phenolic composition and AA during the prolonged storage of pepper fruits. Three hours of ozonation seems to be the appropriate time to increase the persistence of pepper fruits during storage.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Scabies is a parasitic skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. About 200 million casesworldwide each year in people of all ages are reported. AIM OF STUDY: Retrospective analysis of records of patients hospitalized at the Department with scabies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six-year retrospective analysis of medical records of patients hospitalized with scabies at the Department of Dermatology. Gender, age of patients, comorbidities, clinical course of the disease and treatment were considered. RESULTS: In this period 193 patients were hospitalized with scabies, 96 females (49.7%) and 97 males (50.3%), including 33 children (17%). Mean age of patients was 52.9. Skin lesions persisted 142 days in average; reoccurrence was noted in 14% of cases. Lesions were observed most often in winter (31%). The most common manifestations were erosions (80.8%), excoriations (73.6%), papules (72.6%) and crusts (24.3%), localized mainly on trunk (92%), lower (91%) and upper (86%) limbs. 181 patients (93.8%) reported pruritus which intensified at night in 35.8%. Previous contact with people with scabies reported 41 patients (21%). The most common comorbidity was hypertension, diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease. Accompanying dermatoses were eczema, secondary superinfection and psoriasis. 85 patients (44%) were overweight or obese. Patients received mostly topical permethrin (57%), crotamiton (29%), glicocorticosteroids (73%) and antibiotics (11%), also oral antihistamines (91%). CONCLUSIONS: Analysis revealed more frequent occurrence in adults with no evident sex prevalence. Greater incidence in winter may be caused by people's tendency to spend more time indoors closer to each other at this time of year. Pruritus, the most common subjective symptom, typically worsens at night.

BACKGROUND: Among over 100 types of Herpesviridae viruses, eight can infect humans: herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1, HSV-2), varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and human herpesviruses 6, 7, and 8 (HHV-6, HHV-7, HHV-8). After initial infection, the viruses remain latent for the lifetime of the host. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of six different herpesviruses: HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV, EBV, CMV, and HHV-6 in trigeminal and facial nerve ganglia among a random group of Polish population. METHODS: The studied group consisted of 47 individuals (40 male, seven female); mean age of 47.4 ± 16.5 years) who died of independent causes (suicide, traffic accident, and poisoning, among others). Bilateral trigeminal and facial nerve ganglia of each cadaver were collected during the autopsy. Herpesviruses were detected using multiplex polymerase chain reaction technique. RESULTS: Herpesviruses were found in trigeminal and/or facial ganglia in 30/47 (63.8%) of cadavers. HHV-6 was the most prevalent of the herpesviruses and was found in nearly half of cadavers (n = 22; 46.8%), followed by HSV-1 (n = 7; 14.9%), VZV (n = 4; 8.5%), EBV (n = 4; 8.5%), HSV-2 (n = 2; 4.3%), and CMV (n = 1; 2.1%). Facial nerve ganglia (n = 23; 48.9%) were more often infected than trigeminal ganglia (n = 13; 27.7%). DISCUSSION: The results of this study have revealed a common presence of the herpesviruses in trigeminal and facial nerve ganglia among a random group of Polish population. Furthermore, the data also demonstrate simultaneous infection of the ganglia with different herpesviruses. This study has contributed to the knowledge of prevalence and localization of herpesviruses in different structures of the nervous system.

ABSTRACT

Tick-borne rickettsioses are emerging diseases in Europe. The Mediterranean region is endemic for rickettsioses, but the disease can also occur in other European countries. Ticks can be a vector of these bacteria. Spotted fevers caused by rickettsiae have nonspecific symptoms and are difficult to diagnose. The results of serological tests are positive many days after the onset of symptoms. PCR method can be useful in the diagnostic process. In the article we discuss the problem of rickettsia in Europe.
