ABSTRACT

Our research was designed to verify the relationship between male infertility, basic semen characteristics (with respect to detailed sperm morphology), sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF), oxidation-reduction potential in semen (ORP), and leukocytospermia. The obtained results showed that infertile groups (with or without leukocytospermia) had significantly lower basic semen characteristics and higher SDF, raw ORP, and static ORP (sORP) than fertile controls. The thresholds of 13% SDF (AUC = 0.733) and 1.40 sORP (AUC = 0.857) were predictive values for discriminating infertile from fertile men. In infertile groups, a higher prevalence and risk for >13% SDF and >1.40 sORP were revealed. Unexpectedly, leukocytospermic subjects had lower sORP, prevalence, and risk for >1.40 sORP than leukocytospermic-negative men. These groups did not differ in SDF and raw ORP. Both SDF and sORP negatively correlated with basic semen parameters but positively correlated with sperm head and midpiece defects. sORP positively correlated with sperm tail defects, immature sperm cells with excess residual cytoplasm, and SDF. In turn, raw ORP negatively correlated with sperm count but positively correlated with SDF and sORP. These findings indicate that (1) there is a relationship between male infertility, SDF, and OS in semen; (2) in infertile men, there is a clinically significant risk of SDF and OS irrespective of leukocytospermia; and (3) the assessment of SDF and oxidative stress should be independent of leukocytospermia.

Background: Because the etiopathogenesis of male infertility is multifactorial our study was designed to clarify the relationship between standard semen parameters, testicular volume, levels of reproductive hormones and the fragmentation of sperm nuclear DNA (SDF). Methods: Patients (n = 130) were clustered as subjects: 1) with an abnormal volume (utrasonography) of at least one testis (<12 mL) or with a normal volume of testes and 2) with abnormal levels of at least one of the reproductive hormones (FSH, LH, PRL, TSH, total T - electrochemiluminescence method) or with normal hormonal profiles and 3) with high level of SDF (>30%), moderate (>15-30%) or low (≤15%) (sperm chromatin dispersion test). Results: In subjects with a decreased testicular volume and in subjects with abnormal levels of reproductive hormones, decreased basic semen parameters were found. Participants with abnormal testicular volume had a higher percentage of SDF and a higher level of FSH (Mann-Whitney U test). In turn, men with a high level of SDF had lower testicular volume and conventional sperm parameters than men with a low level of SDF (Kruskal-Wallis test). Conclusions: We showed that spermatogenesis disorders coexisted with decreased testicular volume and increased FSH levels. The disorders of spermatogenesis were manifested by reduced basic sperm characteristics and a high level of sperm nuclear DNA damage.

ABSTRACT

Update of the recommendations of the Fertility Preservation Working Group in Oncological, Hematological and Other Patients Treated with Gonadotoxic Therapies "ONCOFERTILITY" (GROF) of the Polish Society of Oncological Gynecology regarding cryopreservation and autologous ovarian tissue transplantation. The Fertility Preservation Working Group in Oncological, Hematological and Other Patients Treated with Gonadotoxic Therapies "ONCOFERTILITY" (GROF) of the Polish Society of Oncological Gynecology has developed current clinical guidelines and recommendations to improve the quality of healthcare provision in the area of reproductive health in patients undergoing therapy that may impair their reproductive potential. The guidelines are based on current scientific evidence available at the time of writing this document. In the absence of scientific evidence on some aspects, a consensus was reached among GROF stakeholders. The purpose of the guidelines is to assist healthcare professionals in making decisions in specific clinical situations regarding the selection of an appropriate and effective diagnostic and therapeutic process. The document provides practical guidelines for the management of cryopreservation and autologous ovarian tissue transplantation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this publication is to present data on the results and complications associated with infertility treatment using assisted reproductive technology (ART) and intrauterine insemination (IUI) in Poland between 2013 and 2016. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The report was prepared by the Polish Society of Reproductive Medicine and Embryology (PTMRiE) and the Fertility and Sterility Special Interest Group of the Polish Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetrics (SPiN PTGiP) as a part of the European IVF Monitoring program (EIM) for the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE). Reporting was voluntary and the data was not subject to external control. The report presents the availability and structure of infertility treatment services, the number of procedures, their effectiveness and complications. RESULTS: Between 2013 and 2016, a total of 106,718 treatment cycles using ART [64,413 classical in vitro fertilization and in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF + ICSI), 36,041 frozen embryo replacements (FER)] and 51,405 IUI were recorded. The clinical pregnancy rates per embryo transfer in IVF, ICSI and FER were 38.3%, 38.1% and 32.4%, respectively. The effectiveness of IUI with husband/partner's semen (IUI-H) was 11.1% and with donor semen (IUI-D) 16.7%. Multiple delivery rates were 11.3% and 6.2% in IVF + ICSI and IUI, respectively. The most common complication was the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) (0.34%). CONCLUSIONS: PTMRiE and SPiN PTGiP report is the only national study documenting Polish reproductive medicine. The results of infertility treatment effectiveness in Poland are comparable with the European data, complications are less frequent than in other countries. The low percentage of multiple pregnancies, and so perinatal complications, is especially valuable. However, due to the lack of a central database and register, the possibility of external control and monitoring of pregnancies and births is limited. Thus, a fully reliable assessment of the treatment quality in our country is not possible.

ABSTRACT

The awareness of one's own sexuality and its expression depend on the stage of an individual's life. Pregnancy is a period of many, also psychosexual, changes. The sexual needs of pregnant women are rarely discussed, and intercourse during this period seems to be a taboo. The aim of this study was to assess the sexual and life satisfaction of pregnant women. The study involved 181 pregnant women and was conducted from July to November 2018. The participants were patients of the pregnancy pathology ward, Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 2 in Szczecin, and participants of antenatal classes. The research project was approved by the Bioethics Committee of the Pomeranian Medical University, Szczecin (KB-0012/74/18). This survey-based study was performed using the self-developed questionnaire and standardized tools: the Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS Statistics 24.0 statistical package. The tests used were the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and Pearson's test. The statistical significance of the results was assumed as (p < 0.05), the correlations (p < 0.01), and probability (p < 0.001). This study demonstrated a high level of life satisfaction, a medium level of overall sexual satisfaction, and a high level of satisfaction with sex. A higher level of satisfaction with life was associated with higher levels of sexual satisfaction in every dimension. There is a need for comprehensive perinatal care and professional sexual counseling.

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) on the quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial functioning of patients with the BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations. This survey-based study was conducted using the Blatt-Kupperman Index, the Women's Health Questionnaire, the Perceived Stress Scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and the authors' questionnaire. All calculations were done using Statistica 13.3. The QoL after RRSO was statistically significantly lower in most domains compared with the state before surgery. The greatest decline in the QoL was observed in the vasomotor symptoms domain (d = 0.953) and the smallest in the memory/concentration domain (d = 0.167). We observed a statistically significant decrease in the level of anxiety as a state (d = 0.381), as well as a statistically significant increase in the severity of climacteric symptoms (d = 0.315) and depressive symptoms (d = 0.125). Prophylactic surgeries of the reproductive organs have a negative effect on the QoL and psychosocial functioning of women with the BRCA1/2 mutations, as they increase the severity of depressive and climacteric symptoms. At the same time, these surgeries reduce anxiety as a state, which may be associated with the elimination of cancerophobia.

ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, affecting approximately 5-8% of females in this group. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism, abnormal periods (rare periods or amenorrhea) and polycystic ovaries visualized through ultrasonography. The etiopathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome has not been elucidated in detail. There are numerous hypotheses on this subject which tend to complement one another. The most widely recognized hypothesis is that the development of PCOS is due to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, which subsequently lead to hyperandrogenism. On the basis of an as of yet relatively small number of studies, an increased prevalence of various psychiatric disorders can be observed in women with PCOS. These include: depression, generalized anxiety disorder, personality disorders, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and eating disorders. Bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders have also been reported in women with PCOS more often than in the general population. The higher prevalence of psychiatric disorders in patients with PCOS, especially depression and anxiety disorders, may be due to both hyperandrogenism and the resulting somatic symptoms. These symptoms can undoubtedly be stigmatizing for women and lower their quality of life. This article is intended to provide an overview of the literature regarding mental disorders associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and to present own research on depression and sexual dysfunction in this group.

ABSTRACT

Abnormal standard semen characteristics and reduced sperm chromatin maturity can appear with increasing male age. However, the influence of paternal age on semen parameters is still controversial. Therefore, this study was designed to estimate the influence of paternal age not only on conventional semen characteristics but also on sperm DNA integrity. This research was carried out on ejaculated sperm cells obtained from men (n = 1124) aged ≥40 y and <40 y. Our data revealed a decreased semen volume and an increased percentage of DFI (sperm DNA fragmentation index) in older men compared to younger men in the entire study cohort, in men with normozoospermia and in men with abnormal semen parameters. Moreover, there was a higher incidence of sperm DNA damage (>10% DFI, low fertility potential) in the groups of men aged ≥40 y than in the groups of men aged <40 y. Older men had over twice the odds ratio for high sperm DNA damage as younger men. Our findings suggest a detrimental effect of advanced paternal age on sperm chromatin integrity. The data show that the evaluation of sperm DNA has greater clinical utility than standard semen analysis in case of male fertility potential assessment.

ABSTRACT

Hyperprolactinemia is a relatively common endocrine disorder. In women of reproductive age it may present as the amenorrhea-galactorrhea syndrome, but in milder forms also as menstrual abnormalities or infertility. Here we describe a 17-year-old girl previously treated with a combined oral contraceptive due to secondary amenorrhea. Hormonal tests showed hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with severe hyperprolactinemia (PRL concentration 1639 ng/ml). Further tests confirmed the presence of a pituitary macroadenoma. Cabergoline treatment was effective in the restoration of a spontaneous menstrual cycle and PRL normalization. In conclusion, clinicians should be aware of the diagnostic and therapeutic problems in the management of hyperprolactinemia.

ABSTRACT

O: BJECTIVES: Copeptin has been reported to play an important role in metabolic response in women with PCOS. However, the optimal cut-off value for detecting subjects with insulin resistance (IR) remains undetermined. We investigated whether copeptin can serve as an indicator of IR and tried to determine the optimal cut-off value of plasma copeptin concentration in detecting subjects with PCOS and IR. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We carried out a case-control study on 158 women with PCOS and HOMA-IR < 2.5, 96 women with PCOS with HOMA-IR ≥ 2.5, and 70 healthy volunteers. Plasma copeptin, as well as hormonal, biochemical, metabolic, and IR parameters, were measured. To investigate whether copeptin allows IR to be predicted in PCOS, we used logistic regression models and ROC curve analysis. RESULTS: Median plasma copeptin concentration was the highest in the women with PCOS and HOMA-IR ≥ 2.5. Logistic regression analysis revealed that copeptin was the strongest predictor of HOMA ≥ 2.5 (OR: 53.34 CI 7.94-358.23, p < 0.01). Analysis of ROC curves indicated that the cut-off value above 4 pmol/L of plasma copeptin concentration had high (99%) specificity but very low (21%) sensitivity in diagnosing of IR (AUC 0.607 (95% CI 0.53-0.68. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that copeptin is associated with IR in PCOS patients, but due to low sensitivity should not be considered as a marker of IR.

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary professional jobs that often enforce a sedentary lifestyle and are frequently associated with testicular overheat, deserve special attention with respect to male fertility potential. Interestingly, the harmful effect of testicular heat stress on sperm characteristics including nuclear DNA integrity was well characterized; however, the influence of sedentary work on sperm chromatin has not yet been documented. Therefore, our research was designed to examine the potential effects of sedentary work not only on conventional semen features but also on sperm nuclear DNA status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was carried out on ejaculated sperm cells obtained from men who spent ≥ 50% of their time at work (≥ 17.5 h per week) in a sedentary position (n = 152) and from men who spent < 50% of their time at work in a sedentary position (n = 102). Standard semen characteristics were assessed according to the WHO 2010 recommendations, while sperm nuclear DNA fragmentation (SDF) was evaluated using the Halosperm test. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the standard semen parameters between the study groups. The groups differed only in SDF parameter. The men who spent at least 50% of their work time in a sedentary position had a higher proportion of SDF than the men who spent < 50% of their time at work in a sedentary position (median value 21.00% vs. 16.50%, respectively). The incidence of low SDF levels (related to 0-15% sperm cells with abnormal DNA dispersion) was significantly lower (27.63% vs. 45.10%), the percentage of men with high SDF levels (related to > 30%) was significantly higher (30.92% vs. 16.67%) in group of men who spent at least 50% of their work time in a sedentary positon. Furthermore, these men were more than twice as likely to have not a low SDF level (OR: 0.4648) and had more than twice the risk of having a high SDF level (OR: 2.2381) than the men in less sedentary occupations. CONCLUSIONS: Despite lack of association between sedentary work and conventional semen characteristics our study revealed detrimental effect of seated work on sperm nuclear DNA integrity. A sedentary job doubled the risk of high levels of sperm DNA damage. The pathomechanism could be related to testicular heat stress resulting in sperm chromatin remodelling failure during spermiogenesis. Therefore, it seems reasonable to simultaneously carry out routine seminological analyses and tests assessing sperm chromatin status while diagnosing male infertility.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationship between the vitamin D [25(OH)D] level in individual follicles and oocyte developmental competence. METHODS: A prospective cohort study in a private infertility center. Infertile women (N = 198) scheduled for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and a single embryo transfer (SET) provided serum samples and 322 follicular fluid (FF) specimens, each from a single follicle on the day of oocyte retrieval. RESULTS: FFs corresponding to successfully fertilized oocytes (following ICSI) contained significantly lower 25(OH)D level compared with those that were not fertilized (28.4 vs. 34.0 ng/ml, P = 0.001). Top quality embryos on the third day after fertilization, when compared to other available embryos, developed from oocytes collected from follicles containing significantly lower 25(OH)D levels (24.56 vs. 29.59 ng/ml, P = 0.007). Positive hCG, clinical pregnancy, and live birth rates were achieved from embryos derived from oocytes that grew in FF with significantly lower 25(OH)D levels than in follicles not associated with subsequent pregnancy. The concentration of 25(OH)D in FF in women with negative hCG was 32.23 ± 20.21 ng/ml, positive hCG 23.62 ± 6.09 ng/ml, clinical pregnancy 23.13 ± 6.09 ng/ml, and live birth 23.45 ± 6.11 ng/ml (P < 0.001). Women with serum 25(OH)D < 20 ng/ml had not only a higher fertilization rate (71 vs. 61.6%, P = 0.026) and a higher clinical pregnancy rate (48.2 vs. 25%, P = 0.001), but also higher miscarriage rate (14.5 vs. 3.8%, P = 0.013) compared with those with levels ≥ 20 ng/ml. CONCLUSION: This study reveals that the level of 25(OH)D in FF correlates negatively with the oocytes' ability to undergo fertilization and subsequent preimplantation embryo development. Oocytes matured in FF with low 25(OH)D concentration are more likely to produce top quality embryos and are associated with higher pregnancy and delivery rates. On the other hand, low serum vitamin D concentration is associated with higher miscarriage rates.

ABSTRACT

Because sperm chromatin may play a key role in reproductive success, we verify the associations between sperm chromatin abnormalities, embryo development and the ability to achieve pregnancy. The evaluation of sperm chromatin maturity using aniline blue (AB), chromomycin A3 (CMA3) and toluidine blue (TB) staining were carried out in group of males from infertile couples that underwent ICSI. Low levels of sperm chromatin abnormalities (< 16%) were found in most subjects (> 50%). A higher percentage of TB-positive sperm cells were discovered in the men from couples who achieved ≤ 50% fertilized oocytes compared to men who achieved > 50%. No significant differences were discovered by the applied tests between the men from couples who achieved ≤ 50% and those who achieved > 50% high-quality embryos on the 3rd or 5th day after fertilization, nor between the men from couples who achieved pregnancy and those who failed. The sperm chromatin maturity did not correlate with the ICSI results. However, the ROC analysis revealed a significant predictive value of TB-positive spermatozoa only for fertilization. Therefore, the TB assay can be considered as a useful test for the prediction of fertilization. Our findings suggest that the level of sperm chromatin abnormalities of the examined men was not clinically significant. No found associations between sperm chromatin maturity and embryo development and the ability to achieve pregnancy. We could not exclude the effects of the repairing processes in the fertilized oocyte. The use of complementary tests that verify the status of the sperm chromatin seems justified.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to compare the outcomes of intracytoplasmic sperm injection/embryo transfer (ICSI/ET) between two IVF centers with similar pregnancy rates and embryo transfer policy but with two different approaches to good-prognosis patients who intentionally chose to limit the number of oocytes used for ICSI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was a retrospective two-center comparative study A total of 218 patients after successful retrieval of >10 mature oocytes following ovarian hyperstimulation were included in the study The number of fertilized oocytes used during ICSI/ET was limited to 6 and 10 in 108 and 110 patients of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine KRIOBANK and VitroLive Fertility Clinic, respectively RESULTS: No significant differences in the implantation rate (29.93% vs. 29.54%; p=0.94) and ongoing pregnancy rate (39.81% vs. 45.45%, p=0.40) were observed between patients who electively fertilized 6 as compared to 10 oocytes, respectively However in patients who deliberately limited the number of fertilized oocytes to 6 the following were observed: i) significantly fewer embryos available for ET (2.89 ± 1.23 vs. 3.77 ± 1.48, p<0.0 1); ii) considerably lower number of frozen embryos per cycle (1.05 ± 1.30 vs. 2.00 ± 1.67, p<0.01), and iii) lower rates of cycles with embryo cryopreservation (4 7.22% vs. 72.72%, p<0.01) as compared to patients with 10 fertilized oocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Elective fertilization of 6 vs. 10 oocytes does not adversely affect fresh ICSI/ET outcome in normal-responding patients. Restricted number of oocytes used for ICSI/ET may be a favorable alternative for couples who do not wish to cryopreserve surplus human embryos.

ABSTRACT

Factors affecting the blood-testis barrier function may be involved in testicular damage and male infertility. Two cytokines play an important role in the barrier regulation, namely transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGF-ß3) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α). The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association between TGF-ß3 (TGFB3) and TNF-α (TNF) gene polymorphisms and male infertility. A total of 846 subjects, 423 diagnosed with male infertility and 423 fertile men were enrolled. TGFB3 (rs2268626:T > C, rs3917158:C > T, rs2284792:A > G, rs2268625:T > C, rs3917187:C > T) and TNF (rs1800629:-308G > A) gene polymorphisms were genotyped. No association between TNF genotype and infertility was observed. As for TGFB3, the genotypes distribution was similar in infertile and fertile men. However, rs2284792 minor allele frequency was significantly higher among infertile subjects. Heterozygous rs2284792 AG genotype was associated with increased odds for infertility [OR = 1.40 (95% CI 1.05-1.86), p = 0.021] and similar results were observed for G allele carrier status [OR = 1.40 (95% CI 1.06-1.84), p = 0.017]. Heterozygosity in TGFB3 rs3917158 was also associated with the infertility [OR = 1.37 (95% CI 1.01-1.87), p = 0.041]. The TGFB3 variant genotypes were associated with lower spermatozoa motility parameters in fertile men. The results indicate that variants in TGFB3 gene may be associated with male infertility. However, the findings require further replication and validation.

ABSTRACT

Carnitine is an important factor in the initiation of progressive sperm motility and end stage of sperm maturation. The compound is transported by an organic cation/carnitine transporter (OCTN2), which is expressed in the male reproductive system. OCTN2 is encoded by SLC22A5 gene with proven -207C>G functional polymorphism. The aim of the case-control study was to investigate a potential association between the -207C>G SLC22A5 polymorphism and male infertility. The -207C>G SLC22A5 polymorphism was determined by means of TaqMan assay in 206 infertile Caucasian males and 256 ethnically matched controls. Besides genotyping study, sperm mitochondrial function was assessed using NADH-dependent NBT assay. The distribution of SLC22A5 genotypes in infertile men was as follows: CC - 29.6%, CG - 53.9%, GG - 16.5% and in fertile men: CC - 32.0%, CG - 50.0%, GG - 18.0%, and was comparable in both evaluated groups. Likewise, the studied polymorphism did not affect sperm mitochondrial function. The results of the current study demonstrated that -207C>G polymorphism of the SLC22A5 gene is not associated with male infertility.

ABSTRACT

Spermatogenesis is a process where an important contribution of genes involved in folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism is observed. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between male infertility and the MTHFR (677C > T; 1298A > C), MTR (2756A > G) and MTRR (66A > G) polymorphisms in a Polish population. No significant differences in genotype or allele frequencies were detected between the groups of 284 infertile men and of 352 fertile controls. These results demonstrate that common polymorphisms in folate pathway genes are not major risk factors for non-obstructive male infertility in the Polish population.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate human oocyte ability to undergo fertilization and subsequent preimplantation embryonic development in relation to a wide panel of follicular fluid (FF) arachidonic acid derivatives (AAD) and linoleic acid derivatives (LAD) of prospectively selected patients undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). METHODOLOGY: Study was designed as a two center (a university clinic and a private clinic) prospective study. 54 women of 181 consecutive couples undergoing ICSI were prospectively found to be eligible for analysis. 'One follicle - one retrieved oocyte - one resulting embryo' approach was used. Each individual follicle was aspirated independently and matched to an oocyte growing in this particular follicular milieu. FF samples were assessed for AAD and LAD by high-performance liquid chromatography; additionally, activity of secretory phospholipase A (sPLA2) was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Increased activity of sPLA2 and significantly higher AAD and LAD levels were found in FF of oocytes that did not show two pronuclei or underwent degeneration after ICSI in comparison to oocytes with the appearance of two pronuclei. Receiver operating characteristics curve analysis identified acids with the highest sensitivity and specificity: 5oxo-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic, 16-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic, 9-hydroxyoctadecadieneoic and 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic. No significant differences between AAD and LAD related to embryo quality were found. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our study demonstrates for the first time that elevated concentrations of AAD and LAD in FF at the time of oocyte retrieval significantly decrease the ability of oocytes to form pronuclei after ICSI. This may serve as a new tool for non-invasive assessment of oocyte developmental capacity. However, levels of AAD and LAD are not associated with subsequent embryo quality or pregnancy rate, and therefore more studies are needed to determine their usefulness in human IVF procedure.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this report is to present data concerning results and complications related to infertility treatment using assisted reproductive technology (ART) and insemination (IUI) in Poland in 2012. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The report was prepared by the Fertility and Sterility Special Interest Group of the Polish Gynaecological Society (SPiN PTG), based on individual data provided by fertility clinics. Reporting was voluntary data were not subject to external verification. The report presents the availability and the structure of infertility treatment services, the number of procedures performed, their effectiveness and the most common complications. RESULTS: In 2014, 34 Polish fertility clinics provided information to the report, presenting data from 2012. The total number of reported treatment cycles using ART was 17,116 (incl. 10,714 fresh IVF/ICSI) and 14,727 IUI. The clinical pregnancy rate per cycle was on average 33.7% for fresh IVF/ICSI and 13.3% for IUI. The prevalence of multiple births was 15.7% and 6.2%, in case of IVF/ICSI and IUI methods respectively The most frequent complication in the course of treatment using ART was ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)--severe OHSS constituted 0.68% of all stimulated cycles. CONCLUSIONS: The SPiN PTG report shows the average effectiveness and safety of ART and was the only proof of responsibility and due diligence of fertility centres in Poland. However, due to the lack of a central register of fertility clinics, facultative participation in the report as well as incomplete information on pregnancy and delivery rate, the collected data do not reflect the full spectrum of Polish reproductive medicine.
