ABSTRACT
This study focuses on developing an encapsulated and dehydrated formulation of vegetative actinobacteria cells for an efficient application in sustainable agriculture, both as a fungicidal agent in crop protection and as a growth-stimulating agent in plants. Three strains of actinobacteria were used: one from a collection (Streptomyces sp.) and two natives to agricultural soil, which were identified as S3 and S6. Vegetative cells propagated in a specific liquid medium for mycelium production were encapsulated in various alginate-chitosan composites produced by extrusion. Optimal conditions for cell encapsulation were determined, and cell damage from air-drying at room temperature was evaluated. The fresh and dehydrated composites were characterized by porosity, functional groups, size and shape, and their ability to protect the immobilized vegetative cells' viability. Actinomycetes were immobilized in capsules of 2.1-2.7 mm diameter with a sphericity index ranging from 0.058 to 0.112. Encapsulation efficiency ranged from 50% to 88%, and cell viability after drying varied between 44% and 96%, depending on the composite type, strain, and airflow. Among the three immobilized and dried strains, S3 and S6 showed greater resistance to encapsulation and drying with a 4 L·min-1 airflow when immobilized in coated and core-shell composites. Encapsulation in alginate-chitosan matrices effectively protects vegetative actinobacteria cells during dehydration, maintaining their viability and functionality for agricultural applications.

Within the field of nanomedicine, which is revolutionizing cancer treatment, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) have shown advantages over conventional chemotherapy when tested on cancer cells in preclinical studies. SLNs have proven to be an innovative strategy for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer cells, providing greater efficiency than existing treatments in various studies. The encapsulation of antineoplastic drugs in SLNs has facilitated a sustained, controlled, and targeted release, which enhances therapeutic efficiency and reduces adverse effects. Moreover, the surface of SLNs can be modified to increase efficiency. For instance, the coating of these particles with polyethylene glycol (PEG) decreases their opsonization, resulting in a longer life in the circulatory system. The creation of positively charged cationic SLNs (cSLNs), achieved by the utilization of surfactants or ionic lipids with positively charged structural groups, increases their affinity for cell membranes and plasma proteins. Hyaluronic acid has been added to SLNs so that the distinct pH of tumor cells would stimulate the release of the drug and/or genetic material. The current review summarizes the recent research on SLNs, focusing on the encapsulation and transport of therapeutic agents with a cytotoxic effect on triple-negative breast cancer.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common hematological cancer in the adult population worldwide. Approximately 35% of patients with AML present internal tandem duplication (ITD) mutations in the FMSlike tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) receptor associated with poor prognosis, and thus, this receptor is a relevant target for potential therapeutics. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are used to treat AML; however, their molecular interactions and effects on leukemic cells are poorly understood. The present study aimed to gain insights into the molecular interactions and affinity forces of four TKI drugs (sorafenib, midostaurin, gilteritinib and quizartinib) with the wildtype (WT)FLT3 and ITDmutated (ITDFLT3) structural models of FLT3, in its inactive aspartic acidphenylalanineglycine motif (DFGout) and active aspartic acidphenylalanineglycine motif (DFGin) conformations. Furthermore, the present study evaluated the effects of the secondgeneration TKIs gilteritinib and quizartinib on cancer cell viability, apoptosis and proliferation in the MV411 (ITDFLT3) and HL60 (WTFLT3) AML cell lines. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from a healthy volunteer were included as an FLT3negative group. Molecular docking analysis indicated higher affinities of secondgeneration TKIs for WTFLT3/DFGout and WTFLT3/DFGin compared with those of the firstgeneration TKIs. However, the ITD mutation changed the affinity of all TKIs. The in vitro data supported the in silico predictions: MV411 cells presented high selective sensibility to gilteritinib and quizartinib compared with the HL60 cells, whereas the drugs had no effect on PBMCs. Thus, the current study presented novel information about molecular interactions between the FLT3 receptors (WT or ITDmutated) and some of their inhibitors. It also paves the way for the search for novel inhibitory molecules with potential use against AML.

Resumen El síndrome metabólico (SM) se asocia con alteraciones metabólicas e inflamatorias que imprimen un mayor riesgo de desarrollar diabetes y enfermedades cardiovasculares y tiene como base la resistencia insulínica. La alimentación, sedentarismo, educación y distribución del ingreso pueden influir en la aparición del SM. El objetivo del estudio fue conocer la prevalencia del SM y los factores de riesgo cardiovascular asociados en una población vulnerable, adulta y urbana, que acudió voluntariamente luego de una campaña de difusión, a un hospital de atención primaria en la ciudad de San Luis, Argentina. En 451 sujetos, 205 hombres y 246 mujeres (45,5±12,4 años) se analizaron datos personales, antropométricos y biomarcadores: colesterol total, colesterol HDL (c-HDL), colesterol LDL, triglicéridos, glucosa, insulina, proteína C reactiva ultrasensible (PCRus), apolipoproteínas A y B, ácido úrico e índices subrogados de insulina. El SM se estableció empleando la definición armonizada de SM (2009). El 80% de la población no completó la educación formal. Los hombres estaban desempleados o con trabajo informal (70%). El 51,4% de la población cumplía con el criterio de SM (50,0% mujeres y 53,1% hombres). Entre los componentes del SM, la tríada más frecuente en mujeres y hombres, fue: c-HDL disminuido, circunferencia de cintura elevada e hipertrigliceridemia. El SM aumentó con la edad en los hombres. Las mujeres con SM presentaron niveles altos de PCRus. El conocimiento de la prevalencia local, tanto de la obesidad como del SM, permite valorar la magnitud del problema en cada comunidad, establecer medidas de prevención, control y compararlo con otras realidades epidemiológicas.
Abstract Metabolic syndrome (MS) is associated with metabolic and inflammatory alterations that increase the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, based on insulin resistance. Diet, sedentary lifestyle, education and income distribution can influence the appearance of MS. The objective of the study was to know the prevalence of MS and associated cardiovascular risk factors in a vulnerable, adult and urban population, that voluntarily attends after diffusion campaign, to a primary care hospital in the city of San Luis, Argentina. In 451 subjects, 205 men and 246 women (45.5±12.4 years), personal, anthropometric and biomarker data were analysed: total cholesterol HDL cholesterol (HDL-c), LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, insulin, ultrasensitive C-reactive protein (usCRP), apolipoproteins A and B, uric acid and insulin surrogate indices. The MS was established using the harmonised definition of MS (2009). Eighty percent of the population did not complete formal education. Men were unemployed or in informal work (70%). A total of 51.4% of the population had the MS criteria (50.0% women and 53.1% men). Among the components of MS, the most frequent triad in women and men, were: decreased HDL-c, elevated waist circumference and hypertriglyceridemia. The prevalence of MS increased with age in men. Women with MS presented high levels of usCRP. Knowledge of the local prevalence of both obesity and MS would allow enable the assessment of the magnitude of the problem in each community, establish prevention and control measures, and compare it with other epidemiological realities.

O objetivo do estudo foi conhecer a prevalência da SM e os fatores de risco cardiovascular associados em uma população vulnerável, adulta e urbana, que compareceu voluntariamente a um hospital de atenção primária na cidade de San Luis, Argentina, após uma campanha de divulgação. Em 451 indivíduos, 205 homens e 246 mulheres (45,5±12,4 anos), foram analisados dados pessoais, antropométricos e de biomarcadores: colesterol total, colesterol HDL (c-HDL), colesterol LDL, triglicerídeos, glicose, insulina, proteína C reativa ultrassensível (PCRus), apolipoproteínas A e B, ácido úrico e índices substitutos de insulina. A SM foi estabelecida utilizando a definição harmonizada de SM (2009). Oitenta por cento da população não concluiu a educação formal. Os homens estavam desempregados ou em trabalho informal (70%). 51,4% da população atendia os critérios da SM (50,0% mulheres e 53,1% homens). Dentre os componentes da SM, a tríade mais frequente em mulheres e homens: c-HDL diminuído, circunferência abdominal elevada e hipertrigliceridemia. SM aumentou com a idade nos homens. Mulheres com SM apresentaram níveis elevados de PCRus. O conhecimento da prevalência local da obesidade quanto da SM permite avaliar a magnitude do problema em cada comunidade, estabelecer medidas de prevenção e controle e compará-lo com outras realidades epidemiológicas.

Liver cirrhosis causes include alcoholism, viral infections (hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV)), alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), and metabolic dysfunction associated with steatotic liver disease (MASLD), among others. Cirrhosis frequency has increased in recent years, with a prevalence of 1395 cases per 100,000 and a mortality rate of 18 per 100,000, which corresponded to 1,472,000 deaths during 2017. In Mexico, liver disease is a public health problem since it was associated to 41,890 deaths in 2022, including liver cirrhosis (>25,000) and ALD (14,927). This represents 114 daily deaths due to these causes, and corresponds to the 4th or 5th place of all causes. The global prevalence of MASLD is estimated to affect 25% of the world's population, while in the pediatric population it could be higher. In Mexican population it is more prevalent since estimations were around 41.3% in 2023. Alcohol consumption, a global health issue due to its high prevalence and associated morbidities, is associated to ALD in 32.9%, with a mortality rate of 23.9%, primarily due to liver-related causes. In Mexico, ALD is present in 23% of all cirrhosis cases, already surpassed by hepatitis B cases in 2009. HCV and HBV frequencies changed due to programs implementing screening detection, vaccines and direct-acting antivirals during the last years. A switch of causes has occurred, increasing MASLD and diminishing viral causes. Efficient performed liver transplantation has grown as a response to increasing cirrhosis cases, including recent authorized centers. These efforts are necessary, whereas preventive strategies should be implemented according to leading causes.

Pollution, causing millions of deaths annually, disproportionally affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Mercury ranks among the three main chemicals of major public health concern, and even low levels can cause cardiovascular and nervous outcomes, with children and indigenous populations being especially vulnerable. Nearly 80% of all emissions in South America originate from the Amazon. Brazil, the fifth-largest contributor to global mercury emissions, exemplifies the challenges faced by LMICs in effectively monitoring and addressing mercury exposure/intoxication. Despite having powerful tools such as SINAN (a digital platform for compulsory disease reporting), and Community Health Agents, data reveals significant underreporting, especially in the Amazon. Furthermore, SINAN has important delays in its update: for instance, 196 cases of Munduruku Indigenous people in 2019 have only been included in 2023. In this Personal View, we outline insightful recommendations to enhance public health surveillance and implement enduring, effective strategies to monitor, report and address mercury exposure/intoxication, focusing on the Brazilian Amazon. Although these recommendations are tailored to the challenges of this country, they hold potential for adaptation by other Amazonian countries facing similar issues (high mercury emissions and the presence of vulnerable populations, among others).

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify safety signals of ophthalmic prostaglandin analogues through data mining the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. METHODS: A data mining search by proportional reporting ratio, reporting OR, Bayesian confidence propagation neural network, information component 0.25 and χ2 for safety signals detection was conducted to the FAERS database for the following ophthalmic medications: latanoprost, travoprost, tafluprost and bimatoprost. RESULTS: 12 preferred terms were statistically associated: diabetes mellitus, n=2; hypoacusis, n=2; malignant mediastinal neoplasm, n=1; blood immunoglobulin E increased, n=1; cataract, n=1; blepharospasm, n=1; full blood count abnormal, n=1; skin exfoliation, n=1; chest discomfort, n=1; and dry mouth, n=1. LIMITATION OF THE STUDY: The FAERS database's limitations, such as the undetermined causality of cases, under-reporting and the lack of restriction to only health professionals reporting this type of event, could modify the statistical outcomes. These limitations are particularly relevant in the context of ophthalmic drug analysis, as they can affect the accuracy and reliability of the data, potentially leading to biased or incomplete results. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings have revealed a potential relationship due to the biological plausibility among malignant mediastinal neoplasm, full blood count abnormal, blood immunoglobulin E increased, diabetes mellitus, blepharospasm, cataracts, chest discomfort and dry mouth; therefore, it is relevant to continue investigating the possible drug-event association, whether to refute the safety signal or identify a new risk.

Chagas disease is a key vector-borne disease. This illness is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas, which is transmitted by triatomine bugs. Largely, the control of this disease relies on reducing such contact. We optimized the performance of a box trap in laboratory conditions to capture four triatomine species: Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål), Triatoma infestans Klug, Triatoma phyllosoma (Burmeister), and Rhodnius prolixus Stål. We varied four components for a box trap: material, color, height, and bait attractants. All species were captured more in corrugated cardboard traps than in other trap material. Moreover, T. infestans and R. prolixus were also captured in plywood traps. T. pallidipennis preferred traps of 15 × 15 × 4 cm and 20 × 20 × 4 cm, while T. phyllosoma and T. infestans were more captured in traps of 10 × 10 × 4 cm, and 15 × 15 × 4 cm. Rhodnius prolixus was more captured to 10 × 10 × 4 cm traps. T. pallidipennis was trapped with traps of any color tested, T. phyllosoma and T. infestans were captured more in red and yellow traps, and R. prolixus was mostly captured in blue, violet, and yellow traps. Triatoma pallidipennis was captured at any height above the ground, while T. phyllosoma, T. infestans, and R. prolixus were mostly captured 50, 100, and 150 cm above the ground. Regarding the lure, T. pallidipennis was trapped with four aldehydes + lactic acid + ammonia; T. infestans and R. prolixus were trapped with a blend of four aldehydes + lactic acid, a blend of the four aldehydes + ammonia, and a blend of four aldehydes + lactic acid + ammonia. Triatoma phyllosoma was trapped with any lure tested. These results showed that the trap boxes offer an alternative method for controlling Chagas disease.

This pilot cross-sectional study was designed to determine the profile of obstetric violence in Ecuador in recent years. An online survey was conducted between March 2022 and April 2022, including women over 18 years who granted their informed consent to participate (n = 1598). We used non-probabilistic sampling to obtain our sample. Fisher's exact test was performed to assess the association between violence and type of birth, healthcare facility, and education level. Out of the women who participated in the study, 89.2% (n = 1426) identified themselves as Mestiza. Additionally, 88.3% (n = 1411) had completed university-level education. The majority of the participants, specifically 63.6% (n = 1017), received their care in public institutions, and 98.2% (n = 1569) reported structural negligence, while 74.5% (n = 1190) reported violation of their right to information. The entire sample affirmed to have experienced violation of the right of presence. This report shows that obstetric violence is present in Ecuador in different ways and that women experience negligence and violation of their right to receive ethical healthcare during childbirth.

The aim of this study was to explore maternity care providers' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about the use of calcium supplements during pregnancy for the prevention of preeclampsia in three hospitals from Metropolitan Buenos Aires, Argentina. We conducted semi-structured interviews and followed a thematic analysis framework. Maternity care providers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding calcium supplementation during pregnancy are linked to barriers to the potential implementation of calcium supplementation. Free provision of calcium supplements by the government, coupled with training that reinforces the scientific evidence supporting their use to prevent preeclampsia, along with documented recommendations from credible sources, would be crucial to ensure that health providers adopt the use of calcium supplements in antenatal care. Future studies should assess pregnant women and policymakers' perceptions about calcium supplementation during pregnancy, as well as local infrastructure to provide access to free-of-charge calcium supplements in antenatal care settings. Economic evaluation with local information could inform policymakers and advocate for the implementation of strategies to reduce preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Neck circumference (NC) has been proposed as a simple measurement to identify patients with overweight and obesity. It has been found that adipose tissue at the cervical level is associated with the presence of metabolic alterations. The aim of this study was to estimate the association between NC and indicators of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) to subsequently estimate its capacity to identify the risk of MS compared to waist circumference (WC) and Body Mass Index (BMI). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 286 children 6-9 years old who attended six public primary schools in Jalisco, Mexico. Pearson's correlation coefficients along with sensitivity and specificity tests were performed to analyze the relationship between NC and MS indicators. Odds ratio (OR) and concordance analyses were performed considering the Kappa index. RESULTS: NC showed statistically significant correlations with all MS indicators except for LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. The cut-off points of NC to identify MS according to sex was >27.4 cm for girls and >29.8 cm for boys. The association of NC with values above the cutoff point and the presence of MS was OR: 21.6 (CI: 7.11-65.74). CONCLUSIONS: NC represents a simple and cost-effective alternative to identify children at risk of MS when compared to BMI and WC.

Biomarkers play a pivotal role in the screening, diagnosis, prevention, and post-treatment follow-up of various malignant tumors. In certain instances, identifying these markers necessitates prior treatment due to the complex nature of the tumor microenvironment. Consequently, advancing techniques that exhibit selectivity, specificity, and enable streamlined analysis hold significant importance. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are considered synthetic antibodies because they possess the property of molecular recognition with high selectivity and sensitivity. In recent years, there has been a notable surge in the investigation of these materials, primarily driven by their remarkable adaptability in terms of tailoring them for specific target molecules and integrating them into diverse analytical technologies. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of molecular imprinting techniques, highlighting their application in developing sensors and analytical methods for cancer detection, diagnosis, and monitoring. Therefore, MIPs offer great potential in oncology and show promise for improving the accuracy of cancer screening and diagnosis procedures.

Se presenta el caso de un lactante de 2 meses que fue llevado a consulta varias veces por llanto problemático, inicialmente interpretado como de causa gastrointestinal. Dado que el síntoma persistía, se sospechó de una fractura debido a su asociación con la movilización de los miembros y la palpación de una tumoración en la cara anterior de la tibia derecha. Las radiografías mostraron compromiso poliostótico diafisario y lesiones compatibles con compromiso cortical de huesos largos. Se realizó el diagnóstico operativo de síndrome de Caffey-De Toni-Silverman y se inició el tratamiento con antiinflamatorios no esteroideos, lo que resultó en una remisión sintomática. Posteriormente, se confirmó el diagnóstico mediante la identificación de la variante patogénica COL1A1 en estado heterocigota. Se trata de una patología rara de la cual se estima una incidencia de 48/100 000 y hay menos de 150 casos descritos al momento.
Here we describe the case of a 2-month-old infant who consulted several times due to excessive crying, initially interpreted as having a gastrointestinal cause. Since the symptom persisted, a fracture was suspected due to its association with mobilization of the limbs and palpation of a mass on the anterior aspect of the right tibia. X-rays showed diaphyseal polyostotic involvement and lesions compatible with cortical involvement of long bones. Caffey-De Toni-Silverman syndrome was diagnosed and treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was initiated, resulting in symptom remission. Subsequently, the diagnosis was confirmed by the identification of the pathogenic heterozygous variant COL1A1. This is a rare condition with an estimated incidence of 48/100 000 individuals, and less than 150 cases have been described to date.

Introducción. La pandemia por COVID-19 ha tenido un impacto profundo en la salud de la población joven de todo el mundo y especialmente en personas con trastornos de la conducta alimentaria (TCA) por situaciones de estrés, ansiedad y cambios en el acceso a la atención médica. Objetivo. Explorar las percepciones de adolescentes sobre los cambios en sus vínculos sociales y modalidades de atención en pacientes con TCA. Población y métodos. Se realizó un estudio cualitativo a través de entrevistas en profundidad a adolescentes con TCA en un hospital universitario durante la pandemia por COVID-19. Resultados. Se entrevistó a 15 adolescentes; el 93 % fueron mujeres y la mediana de edad fue 18 años. El 86,6 % tuvo anorexia nerviosa. Los aspectos negativos percibidos más importantes fueron los malestares en la convivencia familiar (80 %) y la disconformidad con los contenidos de las redes sociales sobre la imagen corporal y dietas (73 %). Los aspectos percibidos positivos fueron la ayuda de los pares (66 %) y mejoras en relación con la alimentación (66 %). El principal cambio identificado en comparación con el tratamiento recibido previo a la pandemia por COVID-19 fue el seguimiento virtual por salud mental (73 %). Conclusión. La población adolescente con TCA durante el ASPO manifestó malestar en la convivencia familiar y disconformidad en los contenidos en redes sociales sobre imagen corporal y dietas. Aunque resaltaron como aspectos positivos la ayuda de los pares y mejoras en su alimentación
Introduction. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the health of young people worldwide, especially on people with eating disorders (EDs) due to the stress, anxiety, and changes experienced in access to health care. Objective. To explore adolescents' perceptions on changes in their social ties and the modalities of health care for patients with EDs. Population and methods. Qualitative study using in-depth interviews with adolescents with EDs seen at a teaching hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results. Fifteen adolescents were interviewed; their mean age was 18 years; 93% were girls. Anorexia nervosa was observed in 86.6%. The most relevant negative aspects perceived were discomfort with family life (80%) and dissatisfaction with social media content regarding body image and dieting (73%). The aspects perceived as positive were peer support (66%) and improvements in eating habits (66%). The main change identified regarding the management before the COVID-19 pandemic was online followup by the mental healthcare team (73%). Conclusion. The adolescent population with EDs during the mandatory social isolation period reported discomfort with family life and dissatisfaction with social media content regarding body image and dieting. Notwithstanding this, adolescents highlighted peer support and improvements in their eating habits as positive aspects.

The genomic characteristics of Peruvian patients with gastric adenocarcinoma from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds were examined in consideration of the possibility that patients from different socioeconomic backgrounds may be exposed to different risk factors. We conducted a prospective pilot study in two Peruvian cities (Lima and Ica). This study enrolled 15 patients from low socioeconomic status (LSES) and 15 patients from medium/high socioeconomic status (MHSES). The genomic profiling of gastric adenocarcinoma samples was done through the FoundationOne CDx platform. We compared the genomic characteristics and the need for targeted therapy and immunotherapy between LSES and MHSES. The genes with higher rates of alterations were TP53 (73.3% vs. 50.0%, P = 0.2635); CDH1 (26.7% vs. 28.6%, P = 1); CDKN2A (20.0% vs. 28.6%, P = 1); KRAS (33.3% vs. 7.1%, P = 0.1686); ARID1A (20.0% vs. 14.3%, P = 1); MLL2 (13.3% vs. 21.4%, P = 1) and SOX9 (33.3% vs. 0.0%, P = 0.0421) in LSES versus HMSES, respectively. There was no significant difference in tumor mutational burden (P = 0.377) or microsatellite status (P = 1). The LSES group had a higher need for targeted therapy or immunotherapy according to gene involvement and alterations. A significant genomic difference exists among patients with gastric adenocarcinoma of different socioeconomic status, which may result in a different need for targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing global public health challenge worldwide. In Mexico, CKD prevalence is alarmingly high and remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD), a severe complication of diabetes, is a leading determinant of CKD. The escalating diabetes prevalence and the complex regional landscape in Mexico underscore the pressing need for tailored strategies to reduce the burden of CKD. This narrative review, endorsed by the Mexican College of Nephrologists, aims to provide a brief overview and specific strategies for healthcare providers regarding preventing, screening, and treating CKD in patients living with diabetes in all care settings. The key topics covered in this review include the main cardiometabolic contributors of DKD (overweight/obesity, hyperglycemia, arterial hypertension, and dyslipidemia), the identification of kidney-related damage markers, and the benefit of novel pharmacological approaches based on Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter-2 Inhibitors (SGLT2i) and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RA). We also address the potential use of novel therapies based on Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonists (MRAs) and their future implications. Emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary treatment, this narrative review aims to promote strategies that may be useful to alleviate the burden of DKD and its associated complications. It underscores the critical role of healthcare providers and advocates for collaborative efforts to enhance the quality of life for millions of patients affected by DKD.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: The description of local seasonality patterns in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) incidence is important to guide the timing of administration of RSV immunization products. METHODS: We characterized RSV seasonality in Guatemala using the moving epidemic method (MEM) with absolute counts of RSV-associated acute respiratory infections (ARI) from hospital surveillance in Santa Rosa and Quetzaltenango departments of Guatemala. RESULTS: From Week 17 of 2008 through Week 16 of 2018, 8487 ARI cases tested positive for RSV by rRT-PCR. Season onsets varied up to 5 months; early seasons starting in late May to early August and finishing in September to November were most common, but late seasons starting in October to November and finishing in March to April were also observed. Both epidemic patterns had similar durations ranging from 4 to 6 months. Epidemic thresholds (the levels of virus activity that signal the onset and end of a seasonal epidemic) calculated prospectively using previous seasons' data captured between 70% and 99% of annual RSV detections. Onset weeks differed by 2-10 weeks, and offset weeks differed by 2-16 weeks between the two surveillance sites. CONCLUSIONS: Variability in the timing of seasonal RSV epidemics in Guatemala demonstrates the difficulty in precisely predicting the timing of seasonal RSV epidemics based on onset weeks from past seasons and suggests that maximal reduction in RSV disease burden would be achieved through year-round vaccination and immunoprophylaxis administration to at-risk infants.

Catalases are essential enzymes for removal of hydrogen peroxide, enabling aerobic and anaerobic metabolism in an oxygenated atmosphere. Monofunctional heme catalases, catalase-peroxidases, and manganese catalases, evolved independently more than two billion years ago, constituting a classic example of convergent evolution. Herein, the diversity of catalase sequences is analyzed through sequence similarity networks, providing the context for sequence distribution of major catalase families, and showing that many divergent catalase families remain to be experimentally studied.

Crops contamination with aflatoxins (AFs) and zearalenone (ZEA) threaten human and animal health; these mycotoxins are produced by several species of Aspergillus and Fusarium. The objective was to evaluate under field conditions the influence of the wet season on the dissemination of AF- and ZEA-producing fungi via houseflies collected from dairy farms. Ten dairy farms distributed in the semi-arid Central Mexican Plateau were selected. Flies were collected in wet and dry seasons at seven points on each farm using entomological traps. Fungi were isolated from fly carcasses via direct seeding with serial dilutions and wet chamber methods. The production of AFs and ZEA from pure isolates was quantified using indirect competitive ELISA. A total of 693 Aspergillus spp. and 1274 Fusarium spp. isolates were obtained, of which 58.6% produced AFs and 50.0% produced ZEA (491 ± 122; 2521 ± 1295 µg/kg). Houseflies and both fungal genera were invariably present, but compared to the dry season, there was a higher abundance of flies as well as AF- and ZEA-producing fungi in the wet season (p < 0.001; 45.3/231 flies/trap; 8.6/29.6% contaminated flies). These results suggest that rainy-weather conditions on dairy farms increase the spread of AF- and ZEA-producing Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp. through houseflies and the incorporation of their mycotoxins into the food chain.
